A Rare ISS Transit Across the Eclipsed Sun

The photograph was taken in Maine, outside the narrow path of totality. People there witnessed a partial solar eclipse, with the Moon covering only part of the solar disk. Thin clouds also appeared in the sky, adding another layer to the unusual image.

The August 12 eclipse was much more dramatic in areas located along the path of totality. The Moon completely covered the Sun in parts of Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain, and Portugal.

The experiment has been running for about five months. During that period, the AI-controlled business reportedly lost nearly $40,000 because of poor commercial decisions and operational mistakes.

Ukrainian drone operators from the “Nebula” battalion noted that Russian troops continue to learn the hard way that the shelters they choose do not always provide protection against modern combat technologies.

The Russian occupier had made the wrong choice even earlier, when he came to fight in Ukraine, and the final outcome of his life was determined by the operators of the unmanned systems unit.

The remains of a vanished Nevada town are becoming visible again. Falling water levels in Lake Mead have exposed parts of St. Thomas after decades underwater. Old roads, foundations and other traces of the community can now be seen across the dry shoreline.

St. Thomas has a remarkable history. Mormon settlers established the town in 1865 near the Muddy River. They created irrigation channels and turned the surrounding desert into farmland. The settlement slowly developed into a local center for trade and transportation.

By the early 20th century, St. Thomas had several businesses and public buildings. A school, church, post office and stores served the growing population. At its height, about 500 people lived there.

The town’s future changed after the United States approved the Hoover Dam project in 1928. The dam was built on the Colorado River and created the huge reservoir now known as Lake Mead.

St. Thomas stood in the area destined to be flooded. Residents were compensated and began leaving their homes. The reservoir started filling in 1935, but one resident remained almost until the end.

Hugh Lord became the final person to leave St. Thomas. He departed in June 1938 as rising water reached the town. The community soon disappeared beneath Lake Mead.

When the reservoir was full, even the town’s tallest remaining structure was underwater. It stood roughly 18 meters, or 60 feet, below the surface. Streets, homes, businesses and public buildings were swallowed by the expanding lake.

That began to change during the 2000s, when Lake Mead’s water level started to decline significantly. As the water gradually receded, more of the long-submerged St. Thomas ghost town emerged from beneath the lake.

By 2026, visitors can once again see the remains of its former buildings, foundations, walls and streets when water levels allow. 

Lower water exposed foundations and roadways. The shape of the former community could still be recognized from the surviving remains. Visitors were able to walk through parts of the site when conditions allowed.

This has happened before. One previous exposure lasted from July 1963 until November 1972. Families of former residents even returned for reunions in 1945, 1963 and 2012.

In the night of August 12, Novorossiysk came under one of the largest Ukrainian attacks against the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s remaining major base.

The strike targeted military and infrastructure facilities across the city. According to Ukraine’s General Staff, several Russian naval vessels, air defense systems and port facilities were damaged.

Among the reported targets were the frigates Admiral Essen and Admiral Makarov. The patrol ship Vasily Bykov was also reportedly damaged.

Ukrainian sources also reported that the small missile ship Buyan-M was hit during the attack, becoming the fourth Russian vessel affected in the operation. 

Ukrainian forces also struck an S-300 air defense system and radar equipment. Piers and other facilities used by the Russian military were hit as well.

The attack extended beyond military targets. An oil facility and other parts of the port infrastructure were damaged. Novorossiysk is also one of Russia’s main grain export ports, making any disruption there potentially significant.

President Volodymyr Zelensky described the operation as unique because it combined several types of weapons. The Ukrainian side said missiles, airborne drones and naval drones were used during the attack.

Russian authorities also acknowledged the scale of the overnight strike. Moscow reported a large number of Ukrainian drones, while Novorossiysk declared a state of emergency after the attack.

Ukraine later confirmed strikes against Russian air defenses, piers and port infrastructure. The extent of the damage to the Black Sea Fleet is still being assessed.

Future heat waves could become longer and more dangerous than anything seen today. Scientists warn that extreme heat may occupy several extra hours during hot days by the end of this century.

Scientists are particularly concerned about night-time heat. The human body normally cools down during the evening and overnight hours.

When temperatures remain unusually high, that natural cooling process becomes harder. People may struggle to recover from daytime heat before the next hot period begins.

This can increase the risk of serious illness. Older adults, children and people with existing health problems may face the greatest danger.

The problem could also become more severe during prolonged heat waves. Several hot days in succession can prevent the body from fully recovering, especially when nights remain warm.

Researchers also warned that low- and middle-income countries could face a disproportionate share of the future heat burden. Many of these countries have contributed less to historical greenhouse gas emissions.

That makes climate change not only an environmental issue but also a major public health challenge.

Scientists say more detailed hourly temperature studies could improve heat warning systems. Instead of focusing only on daily maximum temperatures, authorities could track how long dangerous heat lasts.

Better hourly forecasts could help cities prepare residents for dangerous conditions. They could also improve decisions about cooling centers, emergency services and public health warnings.

Seven decades underwater have also changed the ship dramatically. Large sections have collapsed under the pressure of the marine environment. Parts of the bow and stern have deteriorated significantly.

However, the destruction has created unexpected opportunities. Collapsed sections have opened rooms once protected behind steel bulkheads. These areas may contain Andrea Doria artifacts that have remained hidden for decades.

The search for Andrea Doria artifacts

The Andrea Doria treasure hunt began shortly after the liner disappeared beneath the Atlantic. Divers have recovered many objects from the wreck over the decades.

In 2025, American divers Chris Ogden and Joe Masraani recovered a large gyrocompass. The navigation instrument came from the captain’s bridge.

The device was buried beneath fishing nets, cables and metal debris. The divers cleared the area before attaching a special lifting bag. They then carefully moved the heavy instrument toward the surface.

The discovery produced an unexpected twist several weeks later. The upper section of the gyrocompass was missing from the recovered instrument.

It turned out that diver Al Giddings had recovered that section in 1968. He reportedly kept it in his living room for more than fifty years.

Sadly, Masraani later died while exploring another wreck near Cape Cod. His death added to the long list of divers who have died exploring the Andrea Doria.

Who should control the recovered artifacts?

The recovery of Andrea Doria artifacts remains controversial among divers, historians and marine archaeologists. Archaeologists prefer keeping historic objects at the wreck whenever possible.

The location of an artifact can provide important information about the disaster. Its position may reveal how passengers moved during the sinking. It can also help researchers reconstruct events inside the ship.

A huge mako shark nicknamed Sharkzilla has been spotted off the coast of New York. Its unusual size and reports of attacks on other marine animals sparked an extraordinary theory about possible nuclear contamination.

The dramatic footage was published by the 66th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Prince Mstislav the Brave. The video shows how the remote operator successfully changed the robot’s movement as an enemy drone approached for a strike.

According to the Ukrainian military, the Russian drone had already targeted the ground robotic vehicle when the operator managed to remove it from the attack path. The maneuver happened only seconds before the expected impact.

Diane was killed during the early hours of August 2, 1986. She had been working at a pub in Bebington and was making her way home after finishing her shift.

Her blue Fiat van ran out of petrol on Borough Road. Diane continued on foot. Witnesses later reported seeing her walking in the area shortly after midnight.

Residents also remembered hearing an argument and screams during the night. Diane’s body was found in an alley several hours later.

An investigation showed that she had suffered a violent attack. She had been sexually assaulted and suffered multiple injuries to her head and face. The injuries caused a fatal brain haemorrhage.
