Scientists from King’s College London have finally solved one of the long-standing mysteries of Shakespeare’s biography. For the first time, they have pinpointed the location of the only house William Shakespeare ever purchased in London.

Although historians have long known that the playwright purchased a property in Blackfriars for £140 in March 1613, the exact coordinates of the building remained unknown for over four hundred years.

Now, thanks to the painstaking work of Professor Lucy Munro, this mystery has been solved. The New York Times reports.

According to the research, Shakespeare’s house was located in the area now occupied by the eastern part of Ireland Yard, the lower part of Burgon Street, and parts of the modern buildings at 5 Burgon Street and 5 St. Andrew’s Hill.

How Shakespeare’s house was found

The researcher analyzed three little-known 17th-century documents. The key piece of evidence was a detailed plan of a section of Blackfriars. This plan was drawn up in 1668, just two years after the Great Fire of London, and was kept in the London Archives.

The plan clearly shows an L-shaped building, partially constructed on the site of a former medieval Dominican monastery. The portion of the building above the gatehouse lacked a foundation, so it was not included on the post-fire plan.

Nearby to Shakespeare’s house stood the famous Sign of the Cock Tavern and a converted monastery building. The building proved to be quite spacious: by 1645, it had been divided into two separate houses.

The house in Blackfriars was just a five-minute walk from the Blackfriars Playhouse, of which Shakespeare was a co-owner.

This suggests that in the last years of his life, the great playwright spent significantly more time in London than is commonly believed. It is possible that he worked on his later plays here.

Insects and mammals diverged in evolution over 600 million years ago, yet nature has invented the same molecular solution twice. A mutation at amino acid position 292 of the protein plays a key role.

The researchers didn’t stop at describing it. They changed one amino acid in the dragonfly opsin and created a new variant that responds even better to near-infrared light. This protein has already successfully activated cells exposed to infrared radiation in the laboratory.

The nucleus of 41P is the surviving fragment of a much larger body. This body was much less affected by gas emissions.

However, Avi Loeb proposes a third, much more plausible theory. In his opinion, Comet 41P/Tuttle–Giacobini–Kresak could be a true “Trojan horse”. On the outside, it looks like an ordinary block of ice. But inside, alien technology is hidden.

According to Vegvari herself, preliminary analysis of the paints, canvas, and technique allows the discovered work to be dated to the period 1885–1890.

This coincides with the precise time when Van Gogh was at the height of his talent and created his most vibrant and emotional canvases in Arles and Saint-Rémy.

The study of the painting is ongoing, and final conclusions will be made after all laboratory tests are completed.

Why did Van Gogh create multiple versions of the same painting?

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) is one of the most prolific and emotional artists in history. During his short artistic career (only about 10 years of active painting), he created over 2,000 works, including approximately 860 oil paintings.

In letters to his brother Theo, the artist repeatedly explained his practice: he made sketches, repeated compositions he liked, and experimented with color and technique.

Van Gogh was particularly active in his series of paintings in Arles in 1888—a period art historians call the “Golden Age of Arles.” It was then that he painted “Sunflowers,” “Night Café,” “Bedroom in Arles,” and “Dance Hall in Arles.”

If the discovered painting is indeed a work by Van Gogh, it could be either a preparatory study or an alternative version the artist created for himself or for sale.

If all the tests match, the likelihood of Van Gogh’s authorship becomes very high. For now, however, experts are cautious, saying, “Perhaps something similar happened with this painting.”

Confirmed new works by Van Gogh are extremely rare. The last significant discoveries occurred decades ago. If the Budapest painting is officially recognized, its value could reach tens, and possibly hundreds, of millions of euros.

New research has come to light that shows that the world is at risk of losing 517 bird species in the next 100 years.

These are not isolated incidents but a truly massive process of bird extinction, already underway and significantly exceeding historical rates.

According to a study published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, if current threats persist, 5.2% of the nearly 10,000 bird species studied could become extinct by 2125.

By comparison, since 1500, bird extinction events have been recorded at a third of the rate. The rate of bird extinction has increased dramatically and has surpassed the natural norm.

Even if humanity immediately stops the main factors—habitat destruction, poaching, and climate change—about 250 species will still be doomed.

The reason is their extremely small populations and extremely limited habitats. Today, 11.5% of all bird species are threatened (according to the IUCN Red List 2025-2 update). Moreover, 61% of populations are showing a steady decline—an increase of 17 percentage points since 2016.

Why is bird extinction accelerating?

The main killer is not the climate itself, but the loss of bird habitat. Agricultural expansion, deforestation, and urbanization are destroying nesting, feeding, and migratory habitats.

Scientists estimate that agricultural expansion and intensive farming affect up to 80% of threatened species.

The crisis is particularly severe in the tropics and on islands. Here, ecosystems are extremely sensitive: even small changes in temperature and humidity can have catastrophic consequences.

New data show that extreme heat (caused by climate change) has reduced tropical bird populations by 25–38% compared to what they would have been without global warming.

Polish archaeologists have discovered a record number of so-called outcast graves in an ancient 17th-century rural cemetery in the village of Peń (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship).

For over 20 years, a team of scientists led by Professor Dariusz Polinski of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń has been excavating near the village of Peń.

One of the most striking sites is an unmarked cemetery containing the remains of approximately 100 local residents.

According to Professor Polinski, at least 12 of the burials were made in a special ritual manner. This may be the largest cluster of “anti-vampire” graves in Poland.
