A Chinese satellite has unexpectedly broken apart in one of the more unusual orbits around Earth. The incident has created dozens of new pieces of space debris.

The spacecraft was Yaogan-50 (02), which China launched on March 15, 2026. A Long March 6A rocket carried the satellite into space.

Yaogan-50 (02) reached an altitude of about 952 kilometers, or roughly 590 miles. It was placed into a highly retrograde orbit with an inclination of 142 degrees.

Unlike most satellites in low Earth orbit, the spacecraft traveled in the opposite direction to Earth’s rotation. That unusual trajectory could make future encounters with other objects particularly dangerous.

The satellite operated for only several months before something went wrong. The exact cause of the incident has not been established.

Some of the debris could remain in orbit for thousands of years

On September 4, the U.S. Space Force cataloged at least 43 objects produced by the breakup. Astronomer Jonathan McDowell reported the new debris while tracking the event.

The fragments are now spread across orbital altitudes from about 600 to 1,100 kilometers. They have remained close to the original 142-degree orbital path of the satellite.

That altitude is especially important because Earth’s atmosphere is extremely thin there. Atmospheric drag gradually pulls lower satellites toward Earth, but the effect becomes much weaker at greater heights.

NASA estimates that debris around 800 kilometers can take centuries to leave orbit naturally. Above 1,000 kilometers, some fragments could remain around Earth for thousands of years.

This creates a long-term problem for other spacecraft operating in the same region. A collision with even a relatively small piece of debris can release enormous amounts of energy at orbital velocity.

Scientists do not yet know what destroyed Yaogan-50 (02). A propulsion failure or battery problem could have caused the spacecraft to break apart. A collision with another object is another possibility.

The incident adds to an already growing population of objects surrounding Earth. The European Space Agency has recorded more than 660 explosions, collisions and other fragmentation events.

ESA estimates that the number of space debris objects larger than one centimeter has already exceeded 1.5 million. Many are too small to track individually, yet they can still damage or destroy spacecraft.

China describes the Yaogan-50 series as remote-sensing satellites used for land surveys, crop monitoring and disaster prevention. SpaceNews has reported speculation that the series may also support military reconnaissance and intelligence activities.

The breakup of Yaogan-50 (02) therefore creates more than a temporary cloud of debris. Some of the fragments could remain in orbit long after the satellite itself has been forgotten.

NASA’s Curiosity rover has photographed unusual holes in the Martian surface that do not have an obvious explanation.

The strange formations appeared in Valle Grande, a broad valley on the slopes of Mount Sharp inside Gale Crater. Curiosity is currently climbing through this region while examining ancient rocks that preserve evidence of how the Martian environment changed over time.

What makes these particular features interesting is their unusual appearance. The holes look relatively broad and shallow, while the surrounding material does not immediately reveal an obvious rock or mineral layer that could have fallen away.

One possible explanation involves differences in the hardness or composition of the Martian rock. If a softer material surrounded a more resistant inclusion, erosion could eventually expose or remove it, leaving a cavity behind.

Scientists are examining whether that familiar process can explain the new structures. The rover’s cameras can provide close views of the texture, edges and interior of the holes, while observations from different angles can help reconstruct their three-dimensional shape.

Curiosity is exploring a changing landscape on ancient Mars

The discovery comes as Curiosity investigates a geologically important part of Mount Sharp. The mountain rises about 5 kilometers (3 miles) above the floor of Gale Crater and contains layers formed during different periods of Martian history.

These layers are especially valuable because the rover has already found evidence that Gale Crater once contained lakes and flowing water. The chemistry of the rocks also suggests that Mars experienced major environmental changes as its ancient climate became increasingly dry.

Curiosity recently explored another remarkable feature in Valle Grande: a huge field of polygonal fractures resembling a giant honeycomb. Individual polygons measure about 4 to 8 centimeters (1.5 to 3 inches) across, and scientists said they had never seen so many together in one location.

The rover is now continuing upward through sulfate-rich rocks. These deposits are important because sulfates can preserve clues about periods when water became scarce or conditions on Mars changed significantly.

Close-up observations from instruments such as the Mars Hand Lens Imager and Mastcam can help scientists compare the mysterious holes with nearby rocks. Chemical measurements may also reveal whether differences in mineral composition played a role in their formation.

For now, there is no evidence that the holes were created by anything artificial or biological. They are best described as unusual geological features whose origin requires further investigation.

As Curiosity climbs higher on Mount Sharp, each new layer provides another piece of the planet’s complicated geological history. The mysterious holes may eventually prove to have a simple explanation, but for now they remain another intriguing puzzle on the surface of Mars.

It was previously reported that Mars explorers spotted a strange figure in an archival NASA image taken on Mars. The figure resembled a jellyfish: the mysterious object appeared to be hovering near the Curiosity rover.

Frightened Russian paratroopers and their crew abandoned their tank and fled after barely noticing a Ukrainian FPV drone.

The incident occurred when Russian assault troops used the armored vehicle to advance toward their positions through wooded terrain. Upon reaching the trees, the crew suddenly abandoned the tank and fled.

The 66th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Prince Mstislav the Brave published a video of the incident on social media.

The video shows Russian occupiers jumping out of the tank and disappearing into the trees. Ukrainian drone operators then began destroying the abandoned tank.

According to the brigade, the Russians apparently viewed the tank as expendable and made no attempt to preserve it or continue using it.

“We are documenting interesting and strange behavior by the enemy in their attempts to reach their positions,” the Ukrainian military stated.

Just a few days ago, the 33rd Separate Assault Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed a Russian tank that was well camouflaged by branches and hidden among the trees near the front line.

It was previously reported that the Ukrainian crew of a German Leopard tank, which is in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, calmly, as if at a shooting gallery, destroyed a column of Russian army armored vehicles on the front lines.

A strange pattern on the seafloor near the Caribbean has triggered a new debate about what may be hidden beneath the ocean.

The unusual formation was noticed by UFO researcher Scott Waring while examining publicly available bathymetric data. The area lies between Cuba and Haiti, close to the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas.

Waring believes the pattern could represent the remains of a sunken city built by an ancient civilization. He points to long, relatively straight lines and geometric shapes that appear across the seafloor.

According to his measurements, the suspected formation stretches roughly 11 to 13 kilometers in one direction and about 4.8 kilometers across. Its apparent scale is one reason the discovery has attracted attention online.

The idea of a lost city beneath the Caribbean is fascinating, but there is currently no archaeological evidence proving that the structures were made by humans.

No underwater archaeological expedition has confirmed buildings, streets, walls or other artifacts at the location. Marine scientists have also not established that the unusual shapes are artificial.

Natural geological processes can produce surprisingly regular patterns on the ocean floor. Faults, fractures, sediment movement, volcanic activity and other processes can create lines and geometric-looking formations that resemble artificial structures.

Could this really be an ancient underwater city?

Waring nevertheless argues that the regularity of the shapes deserves closer investigation. He has also raised the possibility that the formation could be connected to a forgotten human civilization rather than an extraterrestrial settlement.

One possible scenario involves a prehistoric settlement built on land that later disappeared beneath the sea. Changes in sea level, tectonic activity or a major geological event could theoretically transform a coastal landscape over thousands of years.

That idea has inevitably led to comparisons with Atlantis, the legendary civilization described by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. However, there is no evidence connecting the Caribbean formation with Atlantis.

The location is especially intriguing because it is not far from the region popularly known as the Bermuda Triangle. The area has inspired decades of stories about vanished ships, aircraft and unexplained phenomena.

Scientists, however, have found no evidence that the Bermuda Triangle has an unusually high rate of disappearances. Its reputation largely comes from popular books, media reports and stories about unexplained incidents.

The bathymetric data examined by Waring comes from the broader effort to map the world’s oceans. The Seabed 2030 project combines data from many organizations to create a detailed global map of the ocean floor. Its goal is to improve knowledge of the seabed rather than search specifically for mysterious ruins.

As ocean mapping becomes more detailed, previously poorly understood areas will become easier to examine. The Caribbean formation could eventually receive a proper scientific investigation using sonar, remotely operated vehicles and underwater archaeological surveys.

It was previously reported that a mysterious “cold spot” had been discovered in the North Atlantic. This spot has puzzled scientists, and new research suggests it may signal dangerous climate change.

In 1705, a woman in the Irish town of Lurgan was believed to have died from a severe fever. Her family arranged a hurried burial, never realizing that she was still alive.

Marjorie McColl had become dangerously ill, and her condition appeared hopeless. At the time, doctors had limited ways to determine whether an unconscious person had actually died. Fear of infection also encouraged families to arrange funerals quickly.

Her husband, John McColl, was a local physician. Before the burial, he reportedly tried to remove a valuable ring from Marjorie’s swollen finger. He could not get it off, so she was buried with the ring still in place.

That decision soon attracted unwanted attention. Grave robbers noticed the fresh burial and returned during the night, hoping to steal the valuable ring.

When they opened the coffin, the thieves struggled to remove it. They eventually tried to cut the ring from Marjorie’s finger. The pain apparently brought the woman out of her deep unconscious state.

To their horror, Marjorie suddenly moved and screamed. The terrified grave robbers abandoned the coffin and ran away, leaving her alive inside the open grave.

Still dressed in her burial clothes and covered with earth, Marjorie managed to climb out and make her way home.

What happened next became an even darker part of the legend. John opened the door and found his supposedly dead wife standing before him. The shock was reportedly so great that he collapsed and died.

The strange story behind the famous gravestone

John was eventually buried in the grave that had originally been prepared for Marjorie. She survived the ordeal and later rebuilt her life, marrying again and having several children.

Years later, Marjorie died for real. She was buried at Shankill Cemetery in Lurgan, where a gravestone is traditionally associated with her remarkable story.

Its famous inscription reads: “Lived once, buried twice.”

The tale is often presented as a documented historical event, although some details have also been repeated as local legend over the centuries. The Earth is rotating slightly faster than expected, and this unusual change could force scientists to rethink the way global time is measured. The British Financial Times reported this, citing a source.

The issue concerns leap seconds, tiny adjustments used to keep atomic clocks synchronized with the irregular rotation of our planet. International timekeepers are now preparing for a major change that could eventually remove these adjustments altogether.

For most people, the difference is impossible to notice. Modern technology, however, depends on extremely precise timing. Even a single second can create problems for computer networks, telecommunications and satellite systems.

Modern clocks no longer depend directly on the movement of the Sun. Instead, atomic clocks provide an exceptionally stable measurement based on the behavior of atoms.

Earth’s rotation is much less predictable. Atmospheric movements, ocean currents and processes deep inside the planet can slightly alter the speed at which Earth turns.

For decades, the general trend was toward a slower rotation. That meant scientists occasionally had to add a second to Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC.

The first leap second was introduced in 1972. Since then, 27 leap seconds have been added to UTC, with the most recent adjustment occurring in 2016.

Recently, however, Earth’s rotation has sometimes become unusually fast. If the trend creates a sufficiently large difference, timekeepers could theoretically need a negative leap second.

That would mean removing one second from the clock rather than adding one. Such an adjustment has never been made, creating concerns about how computer systems would handle it.

Many digital systems were designed with positive leap seconds in mind. A missing second could therefore cause unexpected errors in software and infrastructure that rely on continuous time signals.

Scientists and international standards organizations are now considering another solution. Instead of repeatedly correcting UTC, they could allow atomic time and Earth’s rotational time to drift apart gradually.

A draft proposal prepared for the General Conference on Weights and Measures would make UTC continuous from May 20, 2027. The proposed limit for the difference between UTC and Earth rotation time would eventually reach one hour.

This sounds dramatic, but the divergence would happen extremely slowly. Experts expect it could take many centuries before the difference becomes significant.

The decision is expected to be considered in Versailles in October 2026. If approved, it would represent one of the biggest changes to global timekeeping since leap seconds were introduced.

For everyday life, almost nothing would change. Computers and scientific systems, however, would gain a simpler and more predictable time standard.

Ukrainian troops have destroyed a Russian tank that was heavily camouflaged with branches and concealed among trees near the front line. 

The camouflaged armored vehicle was spotted by Ukrainian reconnaissance. Its position made a direct attack difficult, so the coordinates were quickly passed to the command post.

The 33rd Separate Assault Regiment then sent FPV drones to strike the tank. The unit later released video showing the attack and destruction of the vehicle.

According to the Ukrainian soldiers, the operation was far from easy. The target was located at a considerable distance, while the drones carried relatively small warheads.

Several strikes were needed to damage the tank and start a fire. Eventually, the vehicle was set ablaze and destroyed.

The Ukrainian troops compared the burning tank to a Moscow oil refinery, describing how intensely the vehicle caught fire after the drone strikes.

Camouflage can make armored vehicles difficult to detect from the ground. However, aerial reconnaissance and FPV drones have changed how such targets are identified and attacked.

Small first-person-view drones have become an important weapon on the battlefield. They can reach targets that are difficult for conventional weapons to engage.

It was previously reported that Russian troops had launched one of the largest attempts to break through the front in recent memory. During the fierce battle, nine Russian tanks and a large number of enemy personnel were destroyed.

Imagine moving into a beautiful English village and discovering that you cannot simply choose the color of your front door. In Wentworth, that is part of the deal.

The picturesque village in South Yorkshire has become known for its unusually strict approach to preserving its historic appearance. Located about nine miles from Sheffield, Wentworth is part of an estate managed by the Fitzwilliam and Wentworth Trust.

At first glance, the rules may seem excessive. Look closer, however, and it becomes clear why the village has managed to retain such a distinctive character.

One of the most recognizable requirements concerns front doors. They are expected to be painted in Wentworth Green, a distinctive shade associated with properties belonging to the estate.

It was previously reported that after nearly 90 years, a sunken ghost town has resurfaced in Lake Mead. Due to hot weather and drought, the water level began to recede, revealing the historic town of St. Thomas and its forgotten buildings and streets.

A Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft operated for Amazon Prime Air crashed during landing in Miami. At least five people were killed, while three others were critically injured.

The aircraft arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, before leaving the runway and striking several vehicles. The impact trapped people inside both the aircraft and nearby cars. The BBC reports this.

More than 60 emergency units and around 200 responders rushed to the scene. Crews also worked to contain leaking aviation fuel and prevent further danger.

Images from the crash site showed the Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767 resting with its nose on the ground and tail raised. Burn marks were visible along the right side of the aircraft.

Miami airport temporarily suspended flight operations after the accident. Two of its four runways later reopened as emergency crews continued working at the scene.

The aircraft was owned by Boeing and operated by cargo carrier 21 Air on behalf of Amazon. The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the accident.

Officials have not yet established why the plane left the runway. Investigators will examine the aircraft, flight data and crew actions as part of the inquiry.

Amazon said it was cooperating with authorities and prioritizing assistance for those affected by the tragedy.

The crash recalls another deadly Amazon cargo plane accident. In 2019, a Boeing 767 operating an Amazon flight crashed near Houston, killing three crew members.

That investigation found that crew errors and inappropriate actions contributed to the earlier accident. Investigators will now determine whether any similar factors played a role in Miami.

It was previously reported that Chinese developers unveiled a concept for a new giant “flying wing” passenger aircraft. This aircraft is capable of carrying over 800 passengers and will compete with the largest modern passenger airliners.

Squid populations are expanding in many parts of the world’s oceans. Scientists now believe the explanation is more complicated than climate change alone.

For years, researchers linked the increase in squid populations to warmer seas and declining numbers of large predatory fish. However, new computer simulations suggest that rising ocean temperatures may actually reduce the total biomass of squid.

Researchers created models representing different marine ecosystems. They then tested what happened when large predators disappeared and water temperatures increased.

The removal of large fish caused squid numbers to rise. However, the cephalopods did not fully replace the predators that had disappeared. Their increased numbers also failed to compensate for the lost animal biomass.

The researchers found that food availability may be a much more important factor. When large predatory fish become less common, more smaller fish remain in the ecosystem. These fish can become an additional food source for squid.

Squid have another important advantage. Their metabolism is extremely fast, and some species can consume food equivalent to roughly 30 percent of their body weight each day.

The animals also grow remarkably quickly. Many squid can develop around five times faster than numerous fish species. Their short lifespan, often only one or two years, allows populations to recover rapidly.

This combination makes squid highly adaptable. They can quickly occupy areas affected by overfishing, ocean warming and ecosystem disruption. Their rapid growth may give them an advantage over slower-growing marine animals.

Temperature, however, produces a different effect. In the simulations, warmer water reduced individual squid weight. Higher temperatures increase metabolic demands, while food supplies may not rise fast enough.

The study therefore suggests that climate change and squid population growth are connected in complicated ways. Warmer oceans may help some populations expand while simultaneously reducing their body size.

The researchers stress that their work is still a preprint and has not undergone peer review. The model also excludes several factors, including temperature differences with depth and heat-related effects on squid embryos.

Future research will need to determine whether these results match real-world changes across different oceans. Scientists are particularly interested in how continued ocean warming could reshape marine ecosystems.

It was previously reported that the giant killer shark Sharkzilla was attacking seals and whales. Scientists began tracking this enormous predator off the coast of New York to check for nuclear mutations.

A strange pattern in an old NASA photograph has suddenly attracted fresh attention online. Some viewers believe the markings look remarkably similar to tracks left by a vehicle.

The image was captured by NASA’s Curiosity rover on May 19, 2025. It shows a familiar Martian landscape filled with rocks, dusty ground and distant hills. But one detail in the terrain has now become the center of an unexpected debate.

Several markings appear to form a surprisingly regular pattern across the surface. From a distance, they can look like tire impressions running through the Martian soil. That resemblance has led some observers to ask an obvious question: could Curiosity have photographed something moving across the planet?

The image was recently reposted on social media by space enthusiast Kari Sivertzen. She was not claiming to have discovered an alien vehicle. Instead, she highlighted unusual depressions in the landscape that could potentially be connected with ancient water activity or an impact.

However, other users immediately focused on the apparent tracks. Some pointed out that the pattern does not seem to match Curiosity’s own wheel marks. That comparison became particularly interesting because another image taken only two minutes later appears to show the same formation from a different angle.

NASA’s real rover tracks look very different

Curiosity’s wheels leave distinctive marks in Martian soil. NASA explains that holes in the rover’s six wheels create recognizable patterns in the tracks. Those patterns even contain Morse code representing “JPL,” the Jet Propulsion Laboratory that built and operates the rover.

That makes the mysterious formation intriguing, but it does not automatically make it artificial. Mars is full of geological structures that can appear surprisingly regular when photographed from particular angles.

The planet’s surface has also produced countless examples of apparent objects, faces and structures that later received ordinary geological explanations. The human brain is extremely good at recognizing familiar shapes in ambiguous patterns, a phenomenon known as pareidolia.

There is another reason the photograph has attracted attention. Curiosity has spent years investigating Gale Crater, an ancient environment that once contained streams and lakes. NASA says the rover has found extensive evidence that liquid water existed there billions of years ago.

Curiosity was designed to investigate whether those ancient conditions could have supported microbial life. It was never intended to directly detect living organisms. Instead, the rover studies rocks, minerals and chemical evidence that can reveal whether Mars was once habitable.

The timing of the renewed speculation is also interesting. NASA’s Perseverance rover has already identified a Martian rock sample containing potential biosignatures. Scientists stress that these findings could indicate ancient microbial activity, but non-biological explanations have not been completely eliminated.

So far, there is no evidence that the strange tracks in the Curiosity photograph were made by an alien vehicle. But the image raises an entertaining question about how much could be hiding in plain sight across the Martian landscape.

For now, the mysterious markings remain unexplained in the available imagery. Whether they are geological features, an unusual surface pattern or something else entirely, Mars continues to produce photographs that invite us to look twice.

It was previously reported that scientists were exploring a new question: could deep sleep help astronauts survive a mission to Mars? Experts are currently studying cosmonaut hibernation as a means of protecting against radiation and stress.

In the Russian city of Engels, a general was wounded after being shot twice during an attack. The general in question is Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

Ukrainian authorities have previously accused Varpakhovich of involvement in missile attacks against Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure. The reported shooting occurred on September 3 at around 7:00 a.m. in the village of Probuzhdenie, which is located near Engels.

According to preliminary reports, an unidentified gunman approached Varpakhovich near his private residence and opened fire. The attacker reportedly struck the general twice, hitting him in the head and abdomen. The shooter was said to be riding a motorcycle and wearing a helmet before fleeing the scene.

Russian authorities have not publicly provided a full account of the incident. It also remains unclear whether the wounded man has been officially confirmed as Varpakhovich. The identity of the attacker and the possible motive have not been established.

Varpakhovich commands the 22nd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, a strategic aviation formation based at the Engels-2 airbase in Saratov. The division operates long-range bombers, including Tu-95MS aircraft capable of carrying Kh-101 cruise missiles.

His name has appeared in several Ukrainian investigations into Russian missile attacks. Ukrainian investigators have linked him to the command structure behind strikes against targets in Ukraine. These accusations have not resulted in a public conviction against Varpakhovich.

One of the cases concerns the March 1, 2022 missile strike on the Kyiv television tower. Five civilians were killed in the attack, including a 12-year-old girl, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Varpakhovich has also been linked by Ukrainian investigators to the large-scale Russian missile attack of July 8, 2024. One of the strikes hit Kyiv’s Okhmatdet children’s hospital and caused extensive destruction.

The European Union separately identified Varpakhovich as the commander of the 22nd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Division when it imposed sanctions on him in December 2024. The EU’s official decision stated that a Kh-101 missile strike carried out by the division in July 2024 hit the Okhmatdet children’s hospital in Kyiv.

Another case concerns the April 28, 2023 missile attack on a residential building in Uman. Ukrainian investigators have accused Varpakhovich of being part of the command chain connected with that strike. Twenty-four people were killed, including six children.

In 2026, Ukrainian authorities also announced criminal proceedings against Varpakhovich in absentia. He was accused of violating the laws and customs of war in connection with attacks on Ukraine.

The reported shooting therefore comes against a background of serious accusations against the Russian general. His military position has made him a significant figure in investigations into Russia’s long-range missile campaign.

However, many details surrounding the shooting remain unknown. There is currently no confirmed information about who carried out the attack or whether it was connected to Varpakhovich’s military activities.

If his identity and the assassination attempt are officially confirmed, the incident would represent a significant development involving one of Russia’s senior strategic aviation commanders.

The Moon may have formed far faster than scientists once believed. New computer simulations suggest that Earth’s natural satellite could have emerged within only a few hours after a gigantic planetary collision. The finding offers a new perspective on one of the biggest mysteries in planetary science.

For decades, the leading explanation has been the giant-impact theory. According to this scenario, the young Earth collided with a planet-sized body known as Theia. Theia was probably similar in size to Mars, and the collision released an enormous amount of energy.

The impact would have blasted huge quantities of molten rock and debris into space. Scientists traditionally believed that this material formed a disk around Earth before slowly coming together. Over time, the debris eventually produced the Moon.

Researchers from the Southwest Research Institute and the University of Arizona now suggest that the process may have been much faster. They used advanced computer simulations to recreate different versions of the ancient collision. Their models included an important factor that earlier calculations often overlooked: the strength of planetary rock.

Rock does not behave like a simple fluid during a planetary collision. Its physical strength depends partly on temperature and pressure. Extremely hot material becomes weaker, while cooler rock can withstand much greater forces.

The researchers found that these differences could completely change what happens after an impact. In some simulations, the collision severely disrupted Theia and created a huge disk of molten and fragmented material around Earth. Such a disk could later have supplied the material needed to form the Moon.

But another scenario produced a remarkable result. When the researchers used conditions similar to earlier impact simulations, including comparable internal temperatures for Earth and Theia, a largely intact Moon appeared in orbit around Earth.

Temperature could have changed the outcome of the impact

This does not prove that the real Moon definitely formed in five hours. The result depends on the starting conditions used by the researchers. Instead, the study shows that extremely rapid lunar formation is physically possible.

The finding also highlights the importance of Earth’s condition at the time of the collision. A hotter planet would have been weaker and easier to deform. A cooler body could have behaved very differently when subjected to the same enormous impact.

This improved approach could help scientists study other cosmic collisions as well. Including the strength of solid materials makes computer models more realistic. The same techniques could be useful when investigating impacts involving asteroids, dwarf planets and other rocky bodies.

The simulations may also provide new clues about the Moon’s unusual characteristics. Scientists have long investigated why lunar material contains relatively little volatile matter. Extreme temperatures during the collision could have influenced how these substances were lost or redistributed.

Another mystery concerns the remarkable chemical similarity between Earth and the Moon. Lunar rocks have isotopic characteristics that closely resemble those found on our planet. This has created difficulties for some versions of the giant-impact theory.

A rapid formation scenario could offer another way to examine this problem. Material from Earth and Theia may have mixed and redistributed differently during the first hours after the collision. The exact outcome would have depended on the temperature, composition and strength of both worlds.

Scientists still do not know exactly what happened after Theia struck Earth. The giant-impact theory remains the leading explanation for the Moon’s origin, but many details are still being debated.

The latest simulations suggest that the most important part of the Moon’s birth may have happened remarkably quickly. Instead of slowly assembling over a long period, our satellite could have taken recognizable form within hours.

Billions of years later, the Moon remains a constant presence in Earth’s sky. Yet its birth may have been decided during one extraordinarily violent event that unfolded in less than a single day.

Fugu has always been one of Japan’s most dangerous delicacies. Now, rising ocean temperatures are creating a new problem that could make this poisonous fish even harder to prepare safely.

The Japanese delicacy is made from pufferfish, several species of which contain tetrodotoxin. This powerful neurotoxin can block nerve signals and cause paralysis, breathing failure and death.

That danger has not stopped fugu from becoming a prized part of Japanese cuisine. Instead, Japan developed strict rules around its preparation. Chefs must undergo special training and obtain a license before they can prepare fugu for customers.

Climate change is now complicating that long-established safety system.

Researchers have found that several pufferfish species are changing their traditional ranges as coastal waters become warmer. Fish that once occupied different areas are increasingly coming into contact with each other.

That creates opportunities for different species to breed. The result can be hybrid pufferfish with characteristics inherited from both parent species.

The problem is not necessarily that these hybrids contain more tetrodotoxin. The greater concern is that scientists cannot always predict where the toxin has accumulated.

Warming seas are creating dangerous Puffer Fish Hybrids

Different pufferfish species can store tetrodotoxin in different organs. Parts considered safe in one species may therefore be dangerous in another. A hybrid can make that distinction much harder to establish.

This is particularly worrying because some hybrids can look similar to pufferfish that are already familiar to fishermen and chefs. Without careful identification, an unusual specimen could potentially enter the food supply.

Researchers have already found significant numbers of hybrids in Japanese waters. In one study, hybrids accounted for up to 40 percent of pufferfish catches in areas off Fukushima and Ibaraki.

Similar changes have been observed around Tokyo Bay, where different pufferfish species are increasingly overlapping. Scientists believe shifting ocean conditions are helping drive these changes.

Japanese researchers are now looking at genetic testing as a possible solution. DNA analysis can reveal whether a fish belongs to a known species or is actually a hybrid.

Such testing could eventually help fishermen and authorities identify suspicious catches before they reach restaurants. It may become increasingly important as ocean warming continues to alter marine habitats.

The fugu problem is also part of a much larger environmental change. Warmer seas are forcing many marine animals to move into regions where they were previously uncommon.

When species expand their ranges, they encounter unfamiliar competitors and potential mates. New breeding patterns can then emerge, sometimes producing ecological consequences that were difficult to predict.

A routine trip to the dentist suddenly turned into a fight for survival for a man in New York City. Thomas Fahmy was walking toward his car during a powerful storm when lightning struck him.

The shocking incident happened on August 27, 2026, on Staten Island. Fahmy was carrying an umbrella and walking along Todt Hill Road when a bright flash suddenly appeared near him.

A nearby doorbell camera captured the terrifying moment. The footage shows Fahmy walking toward his car before he suddenly collapses on the street.

Remarkably, he was able to get back on his feet only seconds later. Fahmy then walked toward a nearby house and called for help.

A neighbor heard him shouting and came outside to help. Emergency services were contacted, and Fahmy was taken to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital for examination.

The experience left him with intense pain, numbness, tingling and a powerful burning sensation. He said the sensation affected his entire body, particularly both feet.

Doctors kept Fahmy in the hospital overnight and carried out multiple examinations. Despite the apparent lightning strike, they found no visible burns or major injuries.

Fahmy also never lost consciousness during the incident. After receiving medical care, he was released from the hospital the following day.

The survival was especially remarkable because lightning can cause cardiac arrest, severe burns and neurological injuries. Yet Fahmy managed to stand up and walk for help almost immediately after being struck.

Fahmy later said the experience completely changed his outlook on life. He went to church on Sunday to thank God for giving him another chance.

He also decided to try his luck after surviving the extraordinary event. On August 29, he bought a Mega Millions lottery ticket, although lightning apparently did not bring him a second stroke of luck.

His story is not as impossible as it might initially seem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 90 percent of people struck by lightning survive.

At the same time, lightning remains extremely unpredictable. Around 37 million lightning strikes hit the ground in the United States every year, according to the CDC.

There have been many documented cases of people surviving lightning strikes around the world. Some victims suffer devastating injuries, while others escape with surprisingly little physical damage.

That contrast remains one of the strangest aspects of lightning. One person can die from a single strike, while another can be knocked to the ground and walk away moments later.

Scientists understand many of the dangers caused by lightning, but individual outcomes can still vary dramatically. Factors such as the electrical path through the body and the way the strike occurs can influence the injuries.

Thomas Fahmy’s survival is therefore another remarkable example of nature’s unpredictability. He left home for an ordinary dentist appointment and unexpectedly found himself at the center of a potentially fatal event.

A strange green island has suddenly appeared on a huge Canadian lake. The unexpected sight has left locals wondering where it came from.

The unusual formation was spotted on Williston Lake in British Columbia. It appears to be covered with trees and other vegetation, giving it the appearance of a tiny piece of land floating across the water.

Local resident Rocky Avery filmed the mysterious object and shared the footage online. At first, some people questioned whether the video was genuine. Artificial intelligence has made bizarre footage much harder to verify.

However, the strange island soon received an unexpected confirmation from space.

Experts examined satellite imagery available through the Copernicus Browser. A European Space Agency Sentinel-2 image showed a small green object in the same general area of Williston Lake.

The satellite image placed the formation about 100 kilometers west of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam. Even more strangely, the object had not appeared in satellite images from the previous days.

Then the floating island disappeared.

Nobody initially knew where it had gone. The mystery deepened on August 31, 2026, when Avery reported seeing the formation again. This time, it was reportedly in the Ospika River, which flows into Williston Lake.

Scientists have not yet determined exactly how the strange formation was created. One possibility is that it is actually a giant natural raft rather than a true island.

Trees, roots, soil and other vegetation could have become connected along the shoreline over many years. A major rise in water levels might then have broken this mass away from the land.

There is an interesting detail that could support this theory. Williston Lake reached full capacity earlier in 2026 for the first time in 14 years.

The unusually high water level may have lifted material that had remained attached to the shoreline. Once separated, the vegetation-covered mass could have begun drifting across the reservoir.

Strong currents and changing water conditions could explain its sudden appearance in another location. Its enormous surroundings also make the formation difficult to track.

For now, the mysterious island does not appear to threaten the nearby dam. It could still be dangerous for boaters and fishermen, however.

The biggest mystery remains what is underneath the trees. Until researchers can examine the formation more closely, its true origin remains unknown.

For something that looks like an ordinary island, its sudden appearance and disappearance are certainly unusual.

Soil analysis and ground-penetrating radar have identified several unusual features that could point to buried organic material, although no remains of Noah’s Ark have been conclusively identified.

The investigation is focused on the Durupinar Formation, a geological site located near Mount Ararat. The unusual formation has attracted researchers and explorers for decades because its elongated shape resembles a massive ship.

An international research team has collected hundreds of samples from the area and examined the chemical composition of the soil. The results revealed differences between material inside the formation and samples taken from surrounding ground.

According to the researchers, soil inside the formation contains significantly higher levels of carbon than nearby samples. The difference could indicate a greater concentration of organic material beneath the surface.

Radar reveals unusual structures beneath the formation

Ground-penetrating radar has provided another reason for the team to continue investigating the site. The scans detected several underground anomalies at different depths.

Some of the radar signals appear to form relatively straight lines that intersect at angles. Researchers believe these patterns could represent underground voids, layers or other structures. They caution, however, that radar images alone cannot determine whether such features were created by humans or by natural geological processes.

The composition of the soil has also attracted attention. Researchers reported lower alkalinity and increased amounts of organic material and potassium inside parts of the formation. They believe these characteristics could potentially be associated with the long-term decomposition of organic material.

The team has reportedly collected around 1,000 soil samples as part of the continuing Noah’s Ark research. Scientists plan to carry out core drilling to obtain material from deeper underground and determine what is actually responsible for the anomalies.

The Durupinar Formation was identified in aerial imagery in 1959. It is located roughly 29 kilometers south of Mount Ararat and measures about 157 meters in length. Its unusual dimensions have contributed to claims that the formation could correspond to the biblical Ark.

The connection with Noah’s Ark comes from the Book of Genesis, which describes a huge vessel built by Noah before a catastrophic flood. The biblical account says the Ark eventually came to rest in the mountains of Ararat.

For decades, explorers have searched the region around Mount Ararat for physical evidence that could support the story. The Durupinar Formation became one of the most prominent locations associated with these searches because of its distinctive ship-like appearance.

Despite the latest findings, there is still no archaeological proof that the formation contains Noah’s Ark. Most geologists regard Durupinar as a naturally formed geological structure rather than the remains of an ancient vessel.

The researchers also acknowledge that the current evidence cannot establish the origin of the underground anomalies. Higher carbon levels, soil chemistry and radar reflections can have several possible explanations that are unrelated to an ancient ship.

Core drilling could provide more decisive information by revealing the material beneath the surface. Until those samples are analyzed, the Durupinar Formation remains an intriguing geological mystery rather than confirmed evidence of Noah’s Ark.

It was previously reported that scientists announced the possible discovery of the true burial site of Jesus after 2,000 years, as archaeologists discovered a hidden site that corresponds to the biblical narrative.

Scientists have compiled the first global assessment of the threat posed by glacial lake outburst floods, estimating that approximately 15 million people worldwide live in the potentially hazardous zone. The study was published in the journal Nature Communications.

Glacieral lakes form when meltwater from glaciers melting due to global warming accumulates behind natural dams of ice and debris.

Such dams are unstable: if they fail, a huge volume of water, ice, and rock suddenly rushes down the valley.

This phenomenon, known as a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), can destroy settlements, bridges, and roads located tens of kilometers downstream in minutes.

Researchers from Northumbria University, led by Caroline Taylor, estimated how many people live within a 50-kilometer flood zone around glacial lakes worldwide.

Approximately 15 million people are within this zone, with approximately 300,000 of them living dangerously close—less than 5 kilometers from such bodies of water.

The most vulnerable areas are the mountainous regions encompassing the Himalayas and neighboring ranges.

These regions account for the majority of the population living at risk; the top three countries at risk are China, Pakistan, and India, with Peru having the third-highest number of people at risk.

Combined, India, Pakistan, Peru, and China account for more than half of all those threatened by such floods.

The authors emphasize that the main risk factor is not the size of the lake itself, but the population density and vulnerability of people downstream.

The Andes are particularly alarming: the number of glacial lakes there has increased by 93% since 1990, compared to 37% in High Asia. However, this region is poorly studied—less than a hundred scientific papers have been devoted to it since the late 1970s.

Scientists are calling for more attention and resources to be directed specifically to developing mountain regions, where the combination of rapidly growing lakes, poverty, and a growing population poses the greatest threat.

Scientists previously reported that climate change in Antarctica is rapidly changing. The fate of the peninsula itself could be decided within the next 10 years.

A team of researchers believes new high-resolution maps of the Atlantic Ocean floor could point toward the location of the legendary lost city of Atlantis. The claim has attracted attention because the underwater terrain reportedly contains features that resemble descriptions written by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato.

The project is being led by former US Navy oceanographer Tim Gallaudet. He says researchers have obtained detailed bathymetric data showing unusual formations beneath the Atlantic. The team believes some of these features could correspond to the distinctive layout associated with Atlantis.

Researchers plan an expedition to the mysterious site

The exact coordinates remain secret. The researchers say a non-disclosure agreement prevents them from revealing the location before the planned expedition takes place.

The project reportedly involves an emergency physician who has spent more than a decade collecting geological information about the Atlantic region. Physicist Max Derakhshani has also joined the project and is developing an algorithm designed to identify unusual patterns in underwater terrain.

The team hopes to investigate the suspected site using remotely operated underwater vehicles. Such equipment could capture detailed images and geological samples without requiring divers to reach extreme depths.

Deep-sea explorer Victor Vescovo has reportedly shown interest in the project and offered access to a vessel capable of supporting an expedition. His involvement could provide the team with the technology needed to examine the seafloor directly.

One possible location discussed publicly is the Azores Plateau. Some Atlantis theories place the legendary civilization somewhere around the Azores because of the area’s complex geology. Gallaudet, however, has not confirmed that the plateau is the location identified by his team.

Modern geology presents major challenges for traditional Atlantis theories. Scientists have found no evidence of a continent-sized civilization disappearing beneath the Atlantic during human history. The current claims therefore remain unverified until the underwater formations can be examined directly.

Why is the oarfish called a “Doomsday Fish”?

Japanese folklore gives the oarfish a particularly mysterious reputation. In traditional stories, these creatures are sometimes described as messengers from the underwater palace of the sea god.

According to the legend, an oarfish appearing in shallow water could be a warning of an approaching catastrophe. Earthquakes, tsunamis and other natural disasters have all been associated with the creature.

The legend became popular again after the devastating 2011 earthquake in Japan. Several oarfish were reportedly found near the coast during the period before the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami.

Similar reports have appeared in connection with earthquakes in other parts of the world. However, these observations do not establish that oarfish predict earthquakes.

Scientists have repeatedly stressed that there is currently no reliable evidence connecting the appearance of oarfish with seismic activity. The fish may instead reach shallow water because of illness, injury, changes in their environment or other natural causes.

According to local reports, residents near Komodo remained calm after the discovery. A local villager named Sahlan said tourists who had stayed near the beach found the dead fish at around 7:30 a.m.

The animal’s size made the discovery particularly striking. Oarfish are the longest known bony fish in the world and can reportedly reach lengths of around 11 meters.

Encounters with living oarfish are even more unusual. In February, American tourists Monica and Katie Pittenger reportedly encountered two enormous silver oarfish in shallow water near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Two Russian soldiers surrendered to Ukrainian special forces during a surprise operation near the state border. The Russian servicemen reportedly did not have time to open fire before they were surrounded and captured.

The operation was carried out by fighters of the 6th Rangers Regiment of Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces. According to the Ukrainian command, the unit first conducted reconnaissance to identify the exact location of the Russian position. The soldiers then approached the target without being detected.

The element of surprise played a key role in the operation. Ukrainian special forces reached the Russian position so quickly that the two servicemen were unable to organize resistance. They laid down their weapons and surrendered.

At least 95 people have died in the Nepal floods, while hundreds remain missing. The Nepal Tourism Board has reported 384 missing travelers, including hundreds of foreign nationals. The death toll could rise as rescue teams reach areas cut off by the disaster. 

The Nepal Tourism Board reported 384 tourists and travelers as missing. The preliminary list includes 291 foreign nationals and 93 citizens of Nepal.

Among the missing foreigners are citizens of India, Britain, the United States, Australia, the Netherlands and Malaysia. Authorities are still working to confirm the identities and locations of many people.

Nine police officers stationed near the Nepal-China border were also reported missing. Search teams have been deployed across areas affected by the Nepal floods.

Rescue crews have already managed to save at least 25 people. Fourteen helicopters have been involved in the emergency response. Mountainous terrain and damaged roads are making the operation especially difficult.

The disaster began when the Bhote Koshi River suddenly rose to dangerous levels. The river originates in the Tibetan region before flowing through northern Nepal.

The settlements of Timure and Syabrubesi were among the hardest-hit locations. Fast-moving water flooded residential areas and market districts within a short period.

Floodwaters also damaged police posts and hydropower facilities. Several roads and bridges were destroyed or seriously damaged. The destruction has made access to some communities extremely difficult.

The flood also disrupted transport links toward the Rasuwagadhi border crossing with China. This route is important for trade and movement between Nepal and Tibet.

Officials are investigating what caused such a sudden rise in the river. One possible explanation is a landslide in Tibet that may have released a huge volume of water downstream.

Other reports have pointed to a possible avalanche or ice-rock collapse in the mountainous area. Investigators are expected to examine the upper reaches of the river to determine what triggered the disaster.

The situation remains dangerous because additional debris could block the river. A sudden release of water from such a blockage could create another flash flood in Nepal.

Rescue teams are continuing to search for missing tourists, local residents and security personnel. Authorities are also assessing the damage to roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.

The disaster highlights the extreme risks faced by communities and travelers in the Himalayas. Remote valleys can be especially vulnerable when floods, landslides and other sudden natural hazards occur.

Archaeologists have uncovered new evidence about the landscape surrounding the traditional burial site of Jesus Christ. The discoveries were made beneath the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

The findings do not contain an inscription naming Jesus. However, researchers say the ancient remains closely match important details described in the New Testament. The evidence includes an abandoned stone quarry, cultivated areas and rock-cut tombs dating to the first century.

The archaeological project was led by Professor Francesca Romana Stasolla of Sapienza University of Rome. Researchers investigated underground structures beneath the church during a major restoration project. The results of this study are reported by the Daily Mail.

The excavation revealed that the area was once a large stone quarry. After quarrying ended, parts of the site were filled with soil and reused for other purposes. Researchers found evidence of vegetation and cultivated areas that existed during the relevant historical period.

Archaeobotanical evidence points to plants associated with agriculture. Among the remains were indications of grapevines and olive trees. This suggests that the former quarry was transformed into a cultivated landscape after stone extraction stopped.

The site also contained rock-cut tombs and other features connected with ancient burials. The remains provide a picture of how the area may have looked during the first century, when Jerusalem was under Roman rule.

The location is particularly significant because of its connection with the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ death and burial. The Gospel of John describes a garden near the place of crucifixion and mentions a new rock-cut tomb nearby.

Ancient evidence beneath the church matches the biblical landscape

The archaeological discoveries correspond with several details described in the New Testament. The area was outside the ancient city walls, which fits the description of Jesus being crucified outside Jerusalem.

The location of the quarry is also important. Once stone extraction ended, the abandoned sections could be used for agriculture and burials. Rock faces created natural spaces where tombs could be cut into the stone.

Researchers believe this changing landscape helps explain how the area developed before becoming a major Christian sanctuary. A place that had once been a quarry eventually contained gardens, burial chambers and paths connecting different parts of the site.

Several centuries later, the area became central to Christianity. Roman Emperor Constantine ordered the construction of a monumental church complex there during the fourth century.

Workers reportedly preserved a particular tomb that was already venerated by Christians as the burial place of Jesus. The architects designed the complex around the location rather than simply removing the ancient tomb.

Modern excavations are now revealing the layers that existed beneath the church. Archaeologists can compare physical evidence with historical and biblical descriptions to reconstruct the area’s development.

However, the discovery does not provide direct proof that Jesus himself was buried in the tomb. Researchers have found no inscription identifying him. There is also no archaeological evidence confirming that the tomb belonged to Joseph of Arimathea.

Scientists are also cautious about the agricultural evidence. Laboratory analysis cannot establish with absolute certainty that the garden was being cultivated at the exact time of Jesus’ crucifixion.

Nevertheless, the dating of the archaeological remains places the landscape within the relevant historical period. The discovery therefore adds important evidence to the long-running mystery of Jesus’ burial site.

The research also provides a rare glimpse into ancient Jerusalem. It shows how a stone quarry was transformed into a landscape containing vegetation and tombs before the area eventually became one of Christianity’s most important places of worship.

For archaeologists, the findings do not finally solve every question surrounding the traditional tomb of Jesus. They do, however, strengthen the historical case for the ancient landscape preserved beneath the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

A team of Italian researchers led by radar engineer Filippo Biondi announced the discovery of a possible second sphinx on the Giza plateau in Egypt. According to their data, the giant sculpture, carved over 3,000 years ago, may be buried under a thick layer of hardened sand.

Biondi made this announcement on the Matt Beall Limitless podcast. The announcement quickly spread across global media, including the Daily Mail, Newsweek, and LADbible.

According to Filippo Biondi, the researchers conducted an analysis using satellite-based radar technology (SAR—Synthetic Aperture Radar), which records microvibrations of the surface and allows for the reconstruction of underground structures.

The scientists discovered a mound approximately 55 meters (approximately 180 feet) high, located at a point that is mirror-symmetrical with respect to the Great Sphinx and the Pyramid of Khafre.

“We find a precise geometric correlation… 100% symmetry in this configuration,” Biondi emphasized.

He noted that vertical shafts and horizontal passages similar to those already known beneath the existing Great Sphinx can be traced beneath the hill. The engineer estimates the probability of a second sphinx’s existence at approximately 80%.

Connection with Ancient Artifacts

Researchers are focusing on the Dream Stele—a stone slab installed between the paws of the Great Sphinx around 1400 BC. Some experts believe it depicts two sphinxes, back to back.

This discovery is not the first in a series of claims by Biondi’s team. In 2025, Italian researchers (including Filippo Biondi, Corrado Malanga, and Armando Mei) reported the discovery of enormous underground structures and a possible “megastructure” beneath the Giza plateau using the same technology.

It is important to note that this is only preliminary remote sensing data. No excavations have been conducted at the site, and official Egyptian archaeological authorities have not yet commented on the announcement.

Many Egyptologists are cautious about such sensational claims, emphasizing the need for ground-based verification.

Nevertheless, if the hypothesis is confirmed, it could be one of the most significant discoveries in the study of the Giza pyramid complex in recent decades and significantly change our understanding of ancient Egyptian architecture and symbolism.
