The story of the Mary Celeste is one of those maritime mysteries that never really disappears from public attention. The Daily Star reports this discovery.

Every few years it comes back into discussion, usually when people talk about ghost ships or unexplained events at sea. Now, researchers say there might finally be a reasonable explanation for what actually happened.

The ship was found on December 4, 1872, drifting in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 650 kilometers from Gibraltar. What made the discovery so strange wasn’t just that the vessel was empty, but that everything else looked completely normal.

The ship itself was not damaged, there were no clear signs of a struggle, and nothing obvious that could explain why the crew suddenly disappeared.

Even more confusing was the fact that personal belongings were still on board and the cargo had not been touched. Over time, this combination of details turned the Mary Celeste into one of the most famous examples of a “ghost ship” in maritime history, surrounded by speculation and theories.

Alcohol Vapor Explosion Theory and Scientific Experiment

According to a theory put forward in the 1940s by physician Oliver Cobb, the crew abandoned the ship due to an explosion of alcohol vapor in the hold. The Mary Celeste was carrying 1,700 barrels of pure alcohol from New York to Genoa.

Investigators discovered nine barrels were empty. Cobb suspected the barrels were leaking. Due to bad weather, the crew had to secure the hatches in the hold.

When the Mary Celeste reached warmer waters and the hatches were reopened, the alcohol vapors accumulated in the confined space mixed with oxygen and exploded upon contact with a flame, such as a coal from one of the sailors’ pipe.

Fearing another explosion, the crew temporarily abandoned the Mary Celeste in lifeboats to wait for the holds to air out. However, due to a storm, the ship accelerated to high speed, and the sailors were unable to catch it. The lifeboats were then capsized by the waves.

Jack Rowbotham and Frank Mair conducted an experiment on a 1:18 scale model of the brigantine. They filled the hold with a mixture of ethanol vapor and air.

When the temperature was low, as in New York City when the Mary Celeste sailed, the mixture did not explode from an electrical discharge.

However, when the scientists simulated warm weather, which was common at the site where the ship was discovered, the same discharge caused a powerful explosion that blew out the hatches on the model.

Due to the rapid combustion of the alcohol vapor, the hold of the model was undamaged, even though the temperature at the time of the explosion reached two thousand degrees Celsius.

Now British chemists consider Cobb’s theory proven. They stated that their experiment disproves the “numerous wild conspiracy theories” surrounding the fate of the Mary Celeste’s crew.

Even so, the final fate of the crew is still not confirmed with absolute certainty. The Mary Celeste remains one of those rare historical cases where science can explain parts of the story, but not the entire picture.

If similar processes occurred on Mars, it implies that Jezero Crater once hosted stable wet conditions, potentially including lakes, rivers, and regular precipitation lasting thousands or even millions of years.

How These White Rocks Ended Up Scattered Across Jezero Crater

The white fragments are not confined to a single location; they appear as scattered “float rocks” along much of the rover’s traverse.

This distribution suggests they were transported by powerful water flows — possibly ancient rivers, floods, or the delta system that once fed a lake in the crater.

The Jezero crater was chosen as the landing site precisely because orbital images revealed the presence of a former river delta and a surviving lake.

Competing Theories: Atmospheric Weathering vs. Hydrothermal Activity

Researchers are evaluating two primary formation scenarios for the kaolinite:

• Atmospheric weathering — Long-term exposure to rainfall and surface water in a relatively warm, humid climate (the scenario most exciting for astrobiology).
• Hydrothermal alteration — Hot water from volcanic or impact-related sources rapidly altering rocks, though this typically produces different chemical signatures (e.g., sulfates or iron oxides).

Samples already collected by Perseverance for the future Mars Sample Return mission will help scientists determine which process dominated.

Why This Discovery Matters for the Search for Life on Mars

Confirmation of prolonged atmospheric rainfall would dramatically expand the timeframe during which Mars could have supported habitable conditions.

Rather than fleeting wet episodes, we would have evidence of a planet with stable liquid water, moderate temperatures, and active geological processes — ideal for the emergence and preservation of microbial life.

Christopher Columbus has been connected with Genoa, Italy, for centuries. Most history books describe him as the son of a simple family from the Genoese Republic. Later, he became one of the most famous explorers in history.

But a new study from Spain is once again raising doubts about that story.

Researchers from the Complutense University of Madrid recently carried out DNA analysis connected to people believed to be descendants of Columbus. After comparing genetic data, the team said there may be a link between the explorer and a noble family from Galicia in northwestern Spain.

The work was based on remains found inside the crypt of the Counts of Gelves. Historians have known for years that several descendants of Columbus were buried there. That made the site important for genetic research.

Scientists examined 12 individuals from the crypt and compared thousands of DNA markers with the help of computer modeling. According to the study, one possible family connection stood out more than the others.

The researchers believe the results point toward the Sotomayor family. This noble house had major influence in medieval Galicia. During the 15th century, the family was involved in political conflicts, military campaigns, and regional power struggles.

One historical figure became central to the investigation. It was Pedro Álvarez de Sotomayor, also known as Pedro Madruga. Historians describe him as an influential Galician nobleman. His life has been surrounded by speculation for decades.

The DNA study focused closely on two individuals buried inside the Gelves crypt. One was Jorge Alberto de Portugal, the third Count of Gelves. His connection to Columbus had already been documented in historical records.

The second was Maria de Castro Giron de Portugal, a member of an aristocratic Galician family. Historians had not directly connected the two through written evidence. However, scientists found genetic similarities suggesting they may have shared the same ancestral line.

Researchers used more than 10,000 genetic markers during the analysis. After tracing family relationships across approximately 16 generations, the team concluded that Pedro Madruga was the most likely common ancestor.

Why Historians Still Disagree About Columbus’s Birthplace

The idea that Columbus came from Genoa mainly comes from his 1498 will. In that document, Genoa is mentioned as his birthplace. For many historians, this became the strongest argument supporting the Italian origin theory.

Still, questions about Columbus’s background never fully disappeared.

Some experts have pointed to the fact that Columbus mostly wrote in Castilian Spanish. He rarely used Italian dialects common in Genoa during that period. Others believe he may have hidden details about his identity for political reasons while working closely with the Spanish crown.

There have also been theories suggesting Columbus came from a noble background instead of a poor merchant family. Until recently, most of those ideas relied more on historical interpretation than scientific evidence.

A newly discovered asteroid 2026 JH2 is expected to make a close approach to Earth in the coming days. According to astronomers, the object will pass at a distance of approximately 90,000 kilometers from our planet.

The asteroid was discovered by scientists working at several observatories, including Farpoint Observatory in Kansas and Mount Lemmon Observatory in Arizona. Since the discovery, experts have continued tracking the object to calculate its exact orbit and speed.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory estimates that asteroid 2026 JH2 measures between 15 and 30 meters wide. Scientists based these calculations on the asteroid’s brightness and the amount of sunlight reflected from its surface.

We previously reported on a mysterious incident over Hawaii. A local resident saw a mysterious green glow in the night sky. This glow was invisible to the human eye, only to video cameras.

In eastern Sudan’s Nubian Desert, archaeologists have uncovered more than 260 ancient stone tombs scattered across the Sahara.

What makes the discovery especially interesting is that some of these structures may actually predate the Egyptian pyramids, pushing the timeline of complex societies in this region much further back than expected.

The discovery didn’t begin in the desert itself. It started with satellite images, where researchers noticed faint circular formations spread across a wide area of sand and rock. At first, these shapes didn’t seem significant, but the repetition and pattern suggested something artificial rather than natural.

When archaeologists later investigated the sites on the ground, they confirmed that these were large stone burial enclosures. Some of them are massive, reaching up to 80 meters in diameter, which points to organized construction rather than isolated graves.

According to dating evidence, the structures were built between 4000 and 3000 BC, a period that comes well before the rise of Ancient Egypt’s pharaonic civilization.

During that time, the Sahara was not the dry desert we see today. It was a much greener environment, with lakes, rivers, and grasslands that supported both humans and animals. Nomadic groups could move through the region and rely on seasonal water sources.

What was found inside the tombs

Inside several of the burial sites, archaeologists discovered human remains together with bones of domesticated animals such as cattle, goats, and sheep. The arrangement of these remains is not random, and in many cases there is a clear structure.

A central burial is often surrounded by smaller graves, which may indicate differences in status or roles within the group. This suggests that even these early nomadic communities may have had some form of social hierarchy.

Most of the tombs are located near ancient water sources like dried lakes and old river channels. This detail is important, as access to water would have been essential for survival in this environment.

As the African Humid Period came to an end, rainfall gradually decreased and the Sahara began to dry out. Over time, lakes disappeared and vegetation became scarce, making life increasingly difficult for pastoral communities.

Researchers believe that many of these groups eventually moved toward the Nile Valley, where water remained more stable and conditions were better suited for long-term settlement and development.

Today, these stone circles remain as silent evidence of a forgotten culture that existed thousands of years before Ancient Egypt reached its peak. They also show how much of the Sahara’s history is still buried beneath the sand.

The situation around the Euphrates River has become a major concern in parts of the Middle East. Residents living near the river say the water level has changed noticeably during recent years.

In several locations, areas that were once covered with water are now partly dry. Farmers are also struggling to keep agricultural land productive.

According to regional reports, long drought periods and extremely hot summers continue affecting the river system. Environmental specialists also point to growing water consumption and dam construction. They say these are additional reasons behind the decline.

Interest in the Euphrates is growing not only because of environmental issues. The river is also known from ancient religious texts. It is mentioned in the Book of Revelation. One passage describes the Euphrates drying up before events connected with Armageddon.

Because of this passage, videos and discussions connected to the river regularly appear online. Some people believe the current situation may be linked to Biblical prophecy. Others see the problem as another example of climate change and worsening drought conditions in the region.

The attempt to unexpectedly capture Ukrainian positions ended in a complete rout for the Russian occupiers.

Having reached the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, a Russian group of five infantrymen attempted to capture them.

However, they were met with fierce resistance from the Ukrainian defender, forcing the surviving Russian soldiers to flee.

The drones that arrived at the scene of the battle provided support to the Ukrainian hero by engaging the enemy and eliminating the remaining members of the Russian sabotage unit.

“In the 33rd Separate Assault Regiment, the life of a Ukrainian soldier is the most precious thing,” stated the Ukrainian military, commenting on the released video.

I found this story completely by accident while scrolling through Reddit at around two in the morning. At first I almost skipped it because the internet is full of fake ghost stories, blurry photos, and people trying too hard to scare strangers. But this one stuck in my head for some reason.

The woman who told this story to her nephew recalled visiting an old, abandoned cemetery near Standardsville, Virginia. She enjoyed exploring forgotten places and wanted to take some photographs of the ancient graves hidden deep in the woods.

The place sounded miserable to walk through. Overgrown weeds covered almost everything. Some tombstones were tilted sideways; others had nearly disappeared under grass and dirt. She said the cemetery looked less like a burial ground and more like part of the forest itself.

She wandered around for a while taking random photos before eventually leaving. Nothing strange happened there. At least not while she was actually standing in the cemetery.

Things got weird later. Back home, while checking the pictures on her laptop, she noticed something in the background of one image. Hidden behind the brush appeared what looked like a small figure standing motionless near the graves.

The shape was unclear, but it definitely looked human enough to make people uncomfortable. Some online users thought it resembled a little girl wearing old clothes. Others immediately called it fake or blamed shadows and lighting.

Honestly, the photo sits somewhere in that annoying space where your brain can’t fully decide what it’s seeing.

A few people claimed it was probably an old doll thrown into the cemetery years ago. Another person mentioned pareidolia—the tendency for humans to see faces and figures in random patterns.

The team focused on three main indicators: positive emotions, negative emotions, and overall life satisfaction. The final results showed no statistically significant differences between people who stopped using social media and those who continued using it normally.

Participants did not become substantially happier, less anxious, or more satisfied with life. Researchers also discovered that the length of the detox period had little impact.

I use Grok myself from time to time, so this story caught my attention almost immediately. At first I thought it was something simple — like someone just managed to “ask” an AI for money and it worked. Sounds crazy, but also kind of believable if you don’t look too deep into it.

Honestly, I didn’t expect something like this to be possible. But the more I read about it, the less it looked like that.

It turns out Grok wasn’t really the one sending money on its own. The situation was more complicated. There was a system connected to a crypto wallet, and different parts were interacting with each other.

From what I understand, the attacker didn’t hack anything directly. No code was broken, no accounts were forcefully accessed. Instead, they interacted with a bot that already had permission to execute transactions.

At some point, an NFT was sent to the wallet. That part seemed harmless at first, but it probably changed how the system could be used. After that, there was a message — not just a random one, but something structured enough to be treated as an instruction.

And that’s where things went wrong.

The system processed the input, and a transaction followed. A large amount of DRB tokens — people mention billions — was sent to another wallet. Not because the AI “decided” to do it, but because one part of the system passed something along, and another part executed it.

So saying “AI sent money” is not exactly accurate. It’s more like the system was tricked into doing something it technically allowed.

After that, the account linked to the attacker disappeared. Later, people online started digging into the case, and somehow the situation turned around — most of the funds were returned, around 80%.

What I find interesting here is that nothing was really hacked in the usual sense. It was more about how the system behaved and how it handled instructions.

And if that’s the case, it raises a bigger question. If AI systems are connected to real money, how easy is it to push them into doing something they shouldn’t?

Ukrainian special forces continue to implement a systematic approach to eliminating Russian military facilities in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

The following were struck and put out of commission:

• three Project 05060 assault boats;
• a supply vessel;

“Despite the enemy’s attempts to disrupt the combat mission, our specialists continued the operation and achieved another significant result, weakening the Russian occupation army,” the General Intelligence Directorate stated in its report.

We previously reported that Australian scientists have developed a new AI-powered system. The new system will be able to detect human diseases by analyzing a photograph of their tongue.
