NEW YORK: In a letter on the eve of the new year, His Eminence, Metropolitan Mykhayil conveyed the prayers and solidarity of the Metropolia of the UAOC in the Diaspora to his friend and colleague Bishop Munib Younan, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land. Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church Refused to be Annexed by Moscow Patriarchate

KYIV— During his stay in Kyiv, the Head of the Department of Foreign Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Kyrill Hundyaev, held an unofficial meeting with the head of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), Metropolitan Mefodiy (Kudriakov), and offered the latter to join the Moscow Patriarchate on an "extended autonomy basis."

Before this day, the Moscow Patriarchate recognized UAOC as a “schismatic” and “non-canonical” Church. According to information reported by a source in Kyiv and published by www.portal-credo.ru, Metropolitan Mefodiy declined the proposal of Metropolitan Kyrill.

Night of Pilgrimage Held at Shrine of the Virgin Mother of Immigrants

GRAYMOOR, NY: The remote serenity of the historic Applacian Trail and a cold late autumn night set the mood for an all-night vigil held at the Shrine of the Virgin Mother of Immigrants held on December 1-2. The pilgrimage was sponsored by the "Servants of the Mother of the Immigrants" who are the caretakers of the shrine. Over 100 people from all over the greater NYC area braved the 24 degree (farenheight) temperatures and walked the path to the shrine, located atop a mountain along the wooded trail. From the monastery road to the mountain is well over two miles and can take from a half-hour to an hour to traverse.

Metropolitan Mykhayil Offers Reflection On Anniversary Of Terror Attacks

NEW YORK, September 11, 2007: From the chancery office, His Eminence, Metropolitan MYKHAYIL, Archbishop of New York and Presiding Hierarch of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church in America issued the following statement regarding the annual remembrance of the attacks on the United States of America of September 11, 2001:

"We come together both as a nation and as people of good will throughout the world, to reflect and remember the atrocities of six years ago. While the progress of time has moved us on since that tragic day, we cannot help but remember the tremendous loss and violation that was felt so sharply and so suddenly on that otherwise sunny Tuesday morning. What seemed familiar and second-nature was in an instant, both extremely precious and without permanent guarantee.

The world has certainly changed since 2001. We can even say that we have become accustomed to many of these changes. While we may not have envisioned life as we now live it, human nature quite quickly adjusts to "precautions" and "inconveniences" that the social order demands of us. Despite the level of comfortability we may achieve, we must never forget the lesson to be taken away from the sadness of that day.

The lesson is two-fold: It teaches us in the first instance, that attitudes of intolerance and superiority of any kind, be they of religion, social or political class, race, philosophy, lifestyle, cultural effects or any other, can only lead to ultimate human wreckage and catastrophe. In the second place, we see that the human spirit, when faced with the ugliness of these attitudes and their affects, can rise to a higher level and in doing so, bring about goodness where there is evil, unity where attempts have been made to divide and strength out of moments of greatest weakness.

This is where we stood, six years ago and the lesson still applies. Where we stand today, depends on how much we have allowed the wisdom of Almighty God to form our consciences in light of our experience and knowledge. The Lord seeks not, a blind adherence to a magically ordained set of rules and regulations, that will allegedly win us some ultimate spiritual prize. Religious models that preach this are nothing more than spiritual totalitarianism. Rather, God wishes a love that envelopes our whole heart, soul AND mind, and that in doing so, we naturally love each other sincerely (cf. Mt. 22: 35-40). This should be the product and the result of the lesson of 9-11."

The Metropolitan plans to observe the anniversary by celebrating the Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist and attending a commemorative interfaith gathering of clergy of the area. His Eminence was a "First Responder" to the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, serving as a chaplain at Ground Zero for over several weeks. At that time, he was joined by other clergy of the UAOC, including now retired Metropolitans Stepan and Alexy.

During his pastoral visit to the United States in 2006, His Beatitude, the Metropolitan of Kyiv & All Ukraine MEFODIY, Predstoayatel of the UAOC worldwide, visited the World Trade Center site with Metropolitans Mykhayil and Roman. After prayers for the victims and their families, His Beatitude left a floral tribute in the footprints of the twin towers.

MESSAGE OF THE METROPOLITAN : Ukraine Celebrates Sixteen Years of Independence

Slava Isusu Khrystu! - Dear Brothers & Sisters:

On August 24, 2007, Ukraine observes the sixteenth anniversary of its independence in the post-soviet era. On that day in 1991, and in the months prior and subsequent to it, the hopes and dreams of many centuries were made a reality. Ukraine was finally a free and independent republic among the world's nations, on a level not known since the days of Kyivan-Rus.

For those of us in the Diaspora, the events of the breakdown of the Soviet Union were the realization of the hopes of decades of prayer and waiting. Since the advent of atheistic communism, the Ukrainian Church in our Motherland experienced intense persecution and virtual annihilation. It was isolated from its members living in other places. We sympathized greatly with the suffering of our people in Ukraine, while trying frevently to keep our spiritual, cultural and religious heritage alive in the free world.

With the return of religious liberty to Ukraine, it was with inexpressible joy, that we once again could freely exchange and interact with our people and look to our church there for spiritual leadership. While the process of building a free repbulic has certainly not been an easy one for the Ukrainian people, our prayers are constant, that despite present obstacles and barriers left over from the past, Ukraine follows well, the road it has taken and continues to walk towards its rightful place among the world's nations.

Our Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church is one which embraces people of faith worldwide. Whether or not one is of ethnic Ukrainian descent, all of us share in the rich history, culture and unique traditions that characterize our church today. Ukraine has much to offer the world community. The wealth of its long history, the natural resources and the beauty it possesses, including its coveted geographic location are qualities that should help bring Ukraine to the forefront of global life.

Importantly, these include the contribution Ukraine can make to worldwide ecclesiastical life. I speak here not only about the beauty of our church as such, but because of its pattern of self-determination, faithfulness to its own historical and rightful place among the other churches and unique ability to use its distinctive character to be a bridge in the midst of diversity. This last quality could well one of the most important contributions the Ukrainian Church can offer to ecclesial dialog in the years to come.

On behalf the clergy and faithful of Metropolia, I congratulate His Beatitude, MEFODIY, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine, Worldwide Father and Head of our UAOC, on this special day. We thank him for his archpastoral leadership and the inspiration he continues to give to our people all over the world. The active role of our Predstoyatel is in truth, the visible source of the unity of our church, in every corner of the globe. Many years, Blazhenishij Vladyko!

We congratulate also all of the God-loving bishops, clergy and faithful of our church in Ukraine. We pray for the Ukrainian government and all those involved in forming the future of Ukraine. May Lord direct their steps for the good of the people and the advancement of the values of freedom and justice for all.

President meets Metropolitan Mefodiy

Victor Yushchenko has met with Metropolitan Mefodiy, head of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.

They spoke about how to unify the country’s Orthodox churches to create a national church. They agreed it was vital to achieve national unity and bridge religious differences.

Although the President believes “the unification of Ukraine’s Orthodox churches will contribute to the nation’s spiritual unity,” he said the government should not interfere with this process. He expressed hopes the country’s religious leaders would compromise without any “preliminary demands.”

Metropolitan Mefodiy said he approved the idea of starting talks involving Ukraine’s Orthodox leaders. He added that the President’s insistent desire to unify the churches “yields positive results.”

“Most of the churches have already realized that this is necessary not only for the church but also for the country,” he said.
