The Asia Society has organized the Philippines 21 Young Leaders Initiative on its sixth year. The Initiative has a goal to build a community of young, dynamic Filipino leaders from a cross section of our society. Nominated and selected yearly by a Board of Advisors, these eight to ten young leaders from various sectors – business, politics,

civil society, military, government, media, arts & culture, and the academe – join a larger community selected from the Asia Pacific Region, under a program called the Asia 21 Young Leaders Initiative. Asia 21 gathers about 220 young leaders from the Asia-Pacific to meet, educate, and inspire each other; collaborate and share ideas on public service and other meaningful initiatives, and build relationships of trust and understanding, that will guide the peaceful and optimal unfolding of this Asia Pacific century.

Over the corner of 10 years, from 2006 to 2015, the Philippines 21 Young Leaders Initiative aims to identify 100 of the country’s top young leaders between the ages of 25 and 40 to represent the country to the annual Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit. This year’s Summit will be held in New Delhi, India sometime in November.

After 10 weeks of intense basketball action, it all boils down to this: etching the team’s name on the base of the perpetual trophy.

After being derailed in its quest for a three-peat in 2010, the Hardy Boys have been tearing the league apart. They have been focused since day 1, stream-rolling by the competition with relative ease.

On the other hand, the battle-scarred Alumni All Stars took the much harder route. After a shaky start, the former champions seem to be peaking at the right time.

Though the Hardy Boys have always been a perennial contender over the past 5 years, they haven’t been this hungry since the start of the 2008 season, during their first championship run. Captain Dabs Castillo has arguably gotten better. Sure he may have lost a step or two, but he has developed into a fine all around player. From a team which relied heavily on its high-wire acts and breakaway points, they have now developed a methodical half-court game. The reacquisition of Dino Pastrano and the renewed zest of Waffy Fabie almost secures the only definable weakness of past Hardy teams.

As for the Alumni All Stars, these gentlemen are certainly aren’t bereft of top-caliber hoops DNA running inside them. Mainly composed of former OBG and Jontaxx cagers, the All Stars thus share over 10 finals appearances combined, four of which resulted in titles (OBG 2001 & 07/ Jontaxx 2003 & 04). After failing to secure a semis ticket in the 2010 season, the former rivals seem to be playing beautiful music on their 2nd year together. As unfamiliarity hounded the All Stars early on, these inevitably led to lack of chemistry and team play.

So who will be the first champion of the new decade? Find out on April 2.

<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/uapalumni/~4/PhMCAigUD44" height="1" width="1" />

<sites:pageName>2011prescupredemptionvstradition</sites:pageName><sites:revision>2</sites:revision>

Holy Wednesday Recollection for UA&P alumnae, mothers, faculty and staff

It's Lent, which means it's time to prepare for the big event. From defending champions to dethroned champions.

Newcomer Fusion made sure there will be no back-to-back celebrations for 2010 big winner STC, as it scored a come-from-behind 93-78 quarterfinal triumph last February 26 at the UA&P MPC.

As expected, STC started out strong, asserting its might at the low post, as the combo of versatile Dragon Mike Pamintuan (7 points) and reigning MVP Miguel Vazquez (8 points) scored 15 of their team’s first 22 points. On the other hand, Fusion could not connect on their shots, as their turnovers and missed shots piled up. As a result, they were outscored by 10 markers through the 2nd period.

After STC raced to a 13-point lead at intermission, Fusion employed a torrid full court press at the start of the 2nd half. Thus, they were able to cut the 32-45 deficit to just 6 points, 53-59, going into the final quarter. Swingman Jolo Valdez made 3 treys during one stretch, which opened the lanes for the incursions of the high-flying Jasper Ilagan and sweet-shooting Brian Lintao. Although STC was still able to get 8 markers from former MVP Ashwin Budhrani, it was evident that Fusion was dead set on making its run and that STC was running out of gas.

Quick turnovers by STC enabled Fusion to inch closer and before they knew it, they were already down midway through the payoff period. Moreover, the exhausted champs also had difficulty knocking down their free throws. Aside from Pamintuan, no other STC player scored in double figures in the 4th. The open-court play resulted in a mind-boggling 40-point scoring outburst in the 4th period for Fusion.

With the win, Fusion was also able to avenge their 58-63 loss to STC last January 23. Lintao top scored with 29 points, while Ilagan and Valdez contributed 28 and 20, respectively. But more importantly, they took another step closer to playing with the more established big boys of Division 1. They take on powerhouse Hardy Boys in their knockout semifinals game. It will be youth versus experience, as the likes of Limbo, Lintao, del Prado and Ilagan lock horns with Castillo, Cuna, Odejar, Fabie and the comebacking Vic delos Reyes and Ralph Egonia. Fusion is trying to become the first expansion team to win the cup on its rookie year.

As for STC, it’s back to the drawing boards for this multi-titled bunch. Pamintuan had another monster game of 28 and 19 and Vazquez’ 14 and 11, but lack of bench support did them in. Another former MVP, Matty Naguiat, had 11 points and 5 steals. Surely, we have not heard the last from the only 2-division simultaneous champion in Prescup history.

They will be back.
In celebration of National Arts Month this coming February, the Arts Department invites everyone to the "Banhay Art Exhibit" at Hans Seidel Hall from January 26 (Wednesday) to the end of February. A reception will be held on January 26 at 5:30 pm.

"Banhay" is a glimpse of the art produced by a community of artists in the cultural locale of Paete, Laguna. With paintings, sculptures and “peintures” by 16 homegrown artists from the Paete Artist Guild, the exhibit will show the variety and uniqueness of their style, and its role in keeping alive the local culture of the Paete people.

For inquiries, please call Ms. Abby Reyes at local 361 or email areyes@uap.edu.ph.
