Effective June 5, 2017, James Olson, PEng, is the interim dean of the Faculty of Applied Science.

He follows Marc Parlange, who joined the Faculty as dean in 2013 and is now provost of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

Engineering student team places second in national design competition

A team of four engineering students — Andrew Dworschak (Engineering Physics), Connor McFadyen (Mechanical), Allan Ng (Mechanical Engineering) and Jenny Yang (Engineering Physics) — won second place in the Senior Design category at the Canadian Engineering Competition on March 2-6 in Calgary.

Alexander Harmsen (BASc '15 Engineering Physics) and co-founder James Howard (BASc ’15 Mechanical Engineering) launched their start up, Iris Automation, in October 2015. The company specializes in autonomous drone software and collision avoidance systems that have the potential to create immeasurable applications for creating safer skies in Canada and around the world.

Jory Wong, a third year engineering physics student, was announced as one of the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF) Engineering Ambassador Award winners for 2016. CEMF chooses five women each year to represent their region as the strongest ambassadors for the profession based on their leadership, volunteerism and community involvement.

Student-designed robots face off in annual competition

On August 4, 2016, fifteen student teams competed in the 16th Annual ENPH 253 Competition. Their design projects, the UBER-bots, are student-built self-driving cars that were programmed to race through a miniature city to find and pick up passengers whose beacons indicated they were looking for a ride. The robots were then required to drop off their passengers at the correct destination while avoiding collisions and giving rides to stray passengers – all within a two-minute period.

Applied Science celebrates exceptional faculty and staff at annual appreciation event

At the annual Applied Science Appreciation Barbecue at the University Golf Club on June 21, 2016, Dean Marc Parlange presented six faculty and staff with the Dean's Awards for Excellence. In addition to the awards, which consist of a $2,000 cheque and a personalized certificate, their names will be engraved on a plaque with past and future award winners.

UBC Applied Science women were honoured with two of the eleven awards bestowed at the second annual Wendy McDonald Awards ceremony sponsored by the Vancouver Board of Trade. Elizabeth Croft, APSC Associate Dean of Education & Professional Development, received the 2016 Wendy McDonald Award in the category of Diversity Champion. And Andrea Palmer (BASc ‘15, Mechanical Engineering) received an award in the Women of Promise category.
