Join Samia as she discusses how social media impacts us, from our mood to our mental health, and particularly in the university setting. From this, she will demonstrate how social media has us putting our (virtual) best face forward, inadvertently creating a multitude of one-sided conversations where students display their successes but hide their personal lows.

In this talk, Jennine Punzalan will argue that the difficulties of time management and the dynamics of student involvement are heavily based on one’s social class. This creates a perpetual cycle where students with lower incomes, who work average part-time jobs, are not recognized due to “unimpressive profiles”, and students who can afford to have the time, are recognized. It’s an aspect of campus involvement that is prevalent, but is not being talked about.

Jennine Punzalan is a student of International Relations and French Honours at the University of British Columbia

“There is no required training to be an IRB member. Anyone — you could be an IRB chair tomorrow! Nowhere does it say what the training is or should be. I was startled to learn that sometimes IRB members are volunteered. One women, when she got to her university, she was told everyone in the department is put on her committee, and her committee would be the IRB. And she said: what’s an IRB?’ So again you have, as one colleague put it, “well-meaning amateurs.”
