How-To: Optimize the Graph API data fetch using ETags

Imagine if you could only get data from an API when things have changed or there is new data? Well, you do not have to imagine anymore, the Facebook Graph API now supports HTTP ETags. ETags support on the Facebook Platform can help you reduce bandwidth consumption and client-side overhead by suppressing output when making Graph API calls. In addition, clients (especially mobile devices on slow connections) can increase performance and reduce data usage when calling the Graph API with ETags.

This is how it works:

When you make a Graph API call, the response header includes ETag with a value that is the hash of the data returned in the API call. Pull this ETag value and use in Step-2.
Next time you make the same API call, include the If-None-Match request header with ETag value pulled from step-1 for this API call.
If the data hasn’t changed, the response status code would be 304 – Not Modified and no data is returned.
If the data has changed since last pull, the data is returned as usual with a new ETag. Pull the new ETag value and use for subsequent calls.

Note: While ETags help reduce the data traffic, the If-None-Match GET will still count against the throttling limits for your app and must not be performed at a frequent rate. We recommend only do it for data that doesn’t change frequently like user’s friends, likes, photo albums, photos etc. Do not use it for news feed, messages etc.

The ETag is calculated using the entire response from the API call including its formatting. Developers should be aware that the formatting of API response output may be impacted by the user agent string. Therefore, calls originating from the same client should keep the user agent consistent between calls.

Example:

Install Firebug and Modify Headers add-ons on Firefox.

Fetching user’s friends: https://graph.facebook.com/me/friends?access_token=<token> returns friends data in JSON output and ETag in the response header. You can quickly test by visiting the Graph API Doc and clicking on the Friends sample link that auto generates access token for the session user and makes this API call.

Next create the If-None-Match request header in the Modify Header add-on tool with the ETag value in the quotes. Make sure the header is enabled (green lit).

Now call the friend Graph API again - https://graph.facebook.com/me/friends?access_token=<token>. Note that the API returns no data and the status code is ‘304- Not Modified’:

The php code demonstrates ETags while fetching user’s friends. The code pulls the ETag from the response header and then call the same API again while passing the ETag value in the If-None-Match request header. Notice that the response for the second call is 304 – Not Modified.

Geçtiğimiz yılın üçüncü çeyreğinde Apple’ı geride bırakarak en çok satış yapan akıllı telefon üreticisi konumuna yükselen Samsung, dördüncü çeyrekte karlılık rekoru kırdı. Firma, en son 2010′un ikinci çeyreğinde ulaştığı rekor kar rakamının üzerine çıkarak 2011 Q4′te 4.5 milyar dolar kar beklediğini bildirdi.

Firmanın karlılığında son tüketiciye cihaz satışının yanında bellek yonga setleri ve ekran satışlarındaki yükseliş de önemli rol oynadı. Ancak kayda değer olan, kar tablosundaki en büyük payın firma tarihinde ilk kez cihaz satışından gelmesi.

Firmanın duyurduğu Q4 beklenti rakamlarına göre işletme karı bu dönemde 5.2 trilyon won (4.5 milyar dolar) olacak. Yıl başında sözkonusu dönem için belirlenen hedef 4.7 trilyon won (4.05 milyon dolar) idi. Tahmini rakamın zamanında analisterce ‘iyimser’ olarak nitelendirildiği düşünülürse, karlılıkta gerçekleşen artışın daha da belirgin bir başarıyı işaret ettiği değerlendirmesi yapılabilir.
Firma bundan önceki rekorunu 2010′un ikinci çeyreğinde yaşamış, o dönemde 5 trilyon won kar açıklamıştı.

Apple’ın yoğun patent davalarıyla köşeye sıkıştırmaya çalıştığı Samsung, tablet satışlarında bazı ülkelerde zaman zaman ‘ihtiyati satış yasağı’ gibi kararlarla karşılaşsa da akıllı telefon kategorisinde Galaxy serisinin başarı kardaki patlamada önemli rol oynamış görünüyor.

Dördüncü çeyrekte küresel pazara 35 milyon adet akıllı telefon süren firmanın 2012′de toplam 170 milyon adet satış yapması bekleniyor. Bu rakam 2011′de 95 milyon olarak gerçekleşmişti.

Geçen ay tanıtılan tablet-telefon melezi, 5.3 inç ekrana ve çift çekirdekli işlemciye sahip Galaxy Note’un Avrupa ve Asya pazarlarındaki başarısı, başta ABD olmak üzere tüm diğer pazarlardaki satış tahminlerini de yükseltmiş durumda. Ayrıca akıllı telefon ve tablet pazarlarındaki hızlı büyüme, Android işletim sisteminin en büyük taşıyıcısı konumundaki Samsung’a yarayacak.

Samsung, 150 milyar dolar civarındaki hisse değeriyle halen Asya’nın en değerli teknoloji firması konumunda.

Firebug 1.9 Brings Heaps of Improvements

When it comes to web development tools for the Firefox web browser, Firebug is usually named at the top of everyone’s list. The program integrates well into the Firefox browser, offering tools to edit, debug or monitor outputs for web pages on the Internet and local web pages that are still in development.

Firebug 1.9 has been released yesterday. It will be the main version for all Firefox versions up until Firefox 12, when Firebug 1.10 will take over. The first 1.10 alpha is expected to be released in the coming week.

A blog post at Mozilla Hacks details the changes and new features that the developers have built into Firebug 1.9.

The Firebug windows, originally displayed at the bottom of the browser window can now be displayed at all four sides of the browser window. It is furthermore possible to detach it from the window. The option can be interesting for users who work with widescreen monitors or on multi-monitor systems.

Another interesting new feature is the syntax error positioning, which now highlights the exact position in a line of code where an error occurred. Instead of having to check the code manually, that’s now done automatically by the extension.

A new column in the Net panel is now displaying the protocol of a connection. This offers some interesting options, for instance the ability to check if a secure site is sending all items with the https protocol.

A font viewer and font tooltips have been added to the web development extension as well. Tooltips work by simply hovering the mouse cursor over font information ina style sheet. The Font Viewer instead can be used to check all fonts that are loaded by a page, provided they are in woff format.

Porno sitelerin, müstehcenliğin sakıncalı ilan edilmesinin, kutsalıma dokunma'ların, "çocukları ve değerlerimizi koruma" adı altında yapılan engellemelerin nerelere gelebileceğini biz hep biliyorduk da bir türlü uyanmak istemeyen bir kitle var. Neyse ki o uyanmak istemeyen kitleyi bile uyandırmak için elinden geleni yapıyor büyüklerimiz.

Buyrun bugün aldığımız habere bakalım... İronik bir tesadüf eseri, İçişleri Bakanımız İdris Naim Şahin'in sanat-terör ilişkilendirmeli açıklamalarının birkaç gün sonrasında, bir sinema sitesi olan Öteki Sinema, site yazarlarından Onur Atay'ın "A Serbian Film" hakkındaki eleştiri yazısı nedeniyle TİB'den bir uyarı mektubu alıyor:

“…. sunuş biçiminden, bağlantı sağladığı içeriği benimsediği ve kullanıcının söz konusu içeriğe ulaşmasını amaçladığı açıkça belli ise genel hükümlere göre sorumludur. ”

Gerekçe bu, bir film hakkında yazmak bile suça teşvik olabiliyor, suç da ne derseniz, yine tabii "müstehcen"lik çünkü film yaşlanmış bir porno yıldızı hakkında. Durum bu olunca, site editörü de onca emek verdiği sitesini riske atmak istemediğinden yazıyı yayından kaldırıyor. Otosansüre hoşgeldiniz.

Şaşırdınız mı? Şaşırmadınız muhtemelen, alıştık çünkü bunlara. Bir film eleştirisi "müstehcen" bulunabilir, iki yetişkinin kendi rızalarıyla sevişmeleri suç sayılabilir, çevirmenlere dava açılabilir, sözlük yazarlarına hapis istenebilir. Burası Türkiye, olur bunlar. Sanatın terör olarak görülebildildiği bir ülkenin çocuklarıyız, şaşırmıyoruz bunlara, alıştık değil mi?

Artık sadece internet siteleri değil; kitaplar, filmler, film eleştirileri aynı zihniyetle sakıncalı bulunuyor, mutlu musunuz? "Amaan en büyük derdimiz internet sansürü mü?" diyenlere, bunun internetle alakalı olmadığını, bir zihniyet meselesi olduğunu hep anlatmaya çalıştık. WordPress 3.3 Now Available

The developers of the popular blogging platform WordPress have released version 3.3 just a few minutes ago. WordPress 3.3 update notifications should appear right in the admin interface of the blog. Users can use the internal updater to update from within the admin interface, or by downloading the new version from the official site to update manually.

The What’s New page at the WordPress Codex highlights the – many – changes of the new version. WordPress admins will instantly notice several changes to the applications admin interface. A new toolbar is displayed on top of the dashboard that combines the features of the admin bar and the admin header.

The new bar links directly to plugin and theme updates, comments awaiting moderation and the New menu with options to create new content on the blog. (There is a function to remove some of the elements that are shown in the admin bar. Credits to Sergej Müller)

Another change are “fly-out” menus in the admin interface. All submenus of a menu are displayed when you hoover the mouse over the menu. This saves a click and improves the admin’s workflow.

WordPress editors will notice a new file uploader. The developers have done away with the four upload buttons for specific type of media, and replaced it with a single button. The new uploader supports drag and drop operations and file browsing to select files to upload. Support for rar and 7z files have been added to the file uploader.

WordPress admins who switch between themes regularly will notice that widgets are not lost anymore when they do that.

A video has been created that highlights several of the new features.

The WordPress backend has been updated as well with hundreds of bug fixes and performance improvements. It is to early to tell if the improvements will have a significant impact on the blog’s server resource usage or loading times.

Facebook Timeline Profiles Now Available To All Users

Timeline is the name of the new Facebook user profile that was previously only available to beta testers and developers. Interested users can now activate Timeline for their profile on this page before everyone else gets a notification that it is now available to all users. It is not clear yet if all Facebook profiles will eventually be migrated to the new Timeline profile, or if this remains an option.

A word of advise though: there does not seem to be a way to go back to the old profile once Timeline has been activated. The options at least do not list a setting to revert the profile to the old one.

The profile has been revamped completely. The name indicates already that information are now displayed in a timeline on the profile page.

Basic information, like the user’s name and occupation, profile photo, a large image, friends, photos, and likes are displayed near the top. The current and last month, and years are displayed on the right ready for selection. You can use the selection menu to list activities of a friend in a particular year or month.

The timeline begins after that header section. The profile page highlights recent activities at the top and not so recent ones below that. One interesting addition is the activity log which highlights all user activities on a single page. Here it is also possible to hide news and activities from appearing in the timeline. A filter at the top offers to filter activities by subject, e.g. to only display likes, photos or comments.

The privacy options come with a new setting to change the visibility of old timeline posts to friends only (even if they have been public before). This is done under Privacy Settings > Limit the Audience for Past Posts.

The visibility of each post or activity can be changed on the profile page as well. Just hoover the mouse over a post to display the settings menu there. You have the option to feature posts, or to edit or remove them from the timeline.

Facebook users who activate the timeline profile can edit the new profile page for seven days before it becomes visible to everyone else. This has been implemented to give users enough time to make modifications to the information that are displayed on the profile. Users who do not want to wait that long can publish the timeline profile whenever they are ready to do so.

How To Disable Ubuntu 11.10 Lock Screen When Screensaver Is Active

Ubuntu 11.10 does not ship with a screensaver pack, and even Gnome 3 comes with just a blank screen when your system is idle. In a previous post, we provided you with a remedy to this problem in the form of XScreenSaver application. While this application provides many attractive screensavers, it does not allow you to turn off the password lock. This means that, you have to type your password each time to login to your system, whenever the screensaver becomes active. Like many Ubuntu users, I prefer the direct login feature for Ubuntu, which means that I do not like entering password on a continual basis, including logging into Ubuntu when a screensaver becomes active. In this post, we will show you the procedure for turning off the screensaver lock.

Click the Cog icon from the system tray and select System Settings.

Once done, a new window will pop-up containing numerous options. Click Screen to proceed further.

Click Off (below Lock) to remove the lock screen restriction. Other screensaver options include selection for a time interval, after which screen saver is to be enabled, and lock screen time selection (if you choose to keep the lock screen option enabled.).

Your query is just the starting point for Google's searches. Sometimes Google fixes misspellings, replaces some of the keywords with synonyms or other related keywords, disambiguates your query using your search history. These changes usually improve the quality of Google results because it's hard to come up with the perfect query and improving the query is the first thing you need to do to get better results.

Unfortunately, Google's adjustments aren't always helpful and this adds noise to the list of the search results. For example, I've noticed that Google matches many pages that mention "iPhone 4" when you search for [iPhone 4S] and that's a really big mistake. Having to use quotes every time you enter a query that includes "iPhone 4S" is annoying, but that's probably an issue that will be fixed when there are more pages that mention the name of Apple's latest phone.

Another way to improve Google's query adjustment algorithms is to use "Verbatim", a new feature from the search options sidebar. Just click "show more search tools" in the sidebar, select "Verbatim" and Google will no longer change your query.

"With the Verbatim tool, you can search using the exact keywords you typed," explains Google. Verbatim disables Google's spelling corrections and Google no longer replaces some of your keywords with synonyms (e.g.: television / TV), similar terms (e.g: buy flowers / send flowers), words with the same stem (e.g.: fixing / fix). Verbatim also disables search personalization.

"In addition to verbatim search, which will be rolling out to all users over the next few days, we're also applying similar ideas directly to our algorithms, such as tuning the accuracy of when our query broadening search improvements trigger.
