The head of France Telecom (AKA Orange), Stéphane Richard, recently mentioned the upcoming release date of the iPhone 5.

The source of this rumour is an interview with BFM Business, in French, several days back which loosely translates to read: “If I believe what we were told, the iPhone 5 will be released on 15 October and if the date is confirmed it will of course be in France Telecom stores.”

If if, with two if’s in the above statement it is far from a confirmation of the iPhone 5 release date, but it does fit in with the existing dates rumoured for an early / mid October launch.

Keep calm, it won’t be long until you get your hands on a shiny new iPhone 5, or will it just be an iPhone 4s??

It’s rumoured Apple are going to release two new iPhone’s the iPhone 5 and the cheaper iPhone 4S (appears to be a cut down iPhone 5). According to Crave the iPhone 5 is going to be delayed… Incredibly painful news for those of us waiting to get our hands on the new iPhone.

A source told 9to5 Mac there are continued design and production delays with the iPhone 5, making the early to mid October release unlikely. (Though that date is still a rumour, Apple are keeping the release date on the down low as usual.)

With iPhone 4 sales still doing well it’s not hard to see why Apple could be deliberately delaying the launch. It could be a possible tactic to ensure 18 month contracts are up for renewal, maximising on release day sales. Delays could also be the result of Apple doing more testing to avoid the previous Antenna failure we experienced on the iPhone 4.

But it’s not all bad news, The iPhone 4S is rolling off the production line, with an expecting 10 million handsets ready for the iPhone 4S launch day, rumoured to be on the 7th of October.

Another iPhone 5 rumour for the iPhone 5 News tag on UberGadget!

The Google ChromeBook for Education partnership is said to support the University’s commitment to make 80 percent of its classes partially or fully online by 2013, allowing coeds to work from home, or more than likely in bed with a stinking hangover.

Will this bring Xbox Live gaming on Windows 8 tablets? Integrating access to Xbox Live could help Microsoft gain some ground in the tablet market.

Clearly it’s in a very early state, but even at this stage we’re seeing signs of cross platform multiplayer game support. It would seem that Microsoft are thinking this one through, rather than just botching a gaming element in, features like “cloud saves” and dedicated Music & Video panes will be available.

The Xbox Live development program will purportedly be free, and if Ben-Menahem has his way, this will bring “everything you know and love on Xbox 360 and Xbox Live to Windows.” Brave. Check out the videos below.

The HTC Sensation XE superphone has gone on preorder at Expansys for £500, with a release date set for the 7th of October . It’s the direct replacement for the HTC Sensation smartphone which was released only a few months back.

This is the first HTC handset with integrated Beats Audio, which promises to deliver “studio-quality audio.” The Sensation XE Android smartphone is the first fruit of HTC’s partnership with Dr. Dre’s Beats Audio, and should arrive later on this month in Europe and Asia. Unfortunately, there’s no word on pricing or availability for the U.S.

The HTC Sensation XE is very similar to its predecessor, the Sensation. It has a 4.3-inch display, runs Android 2.3 with HTC Sense UI 3.0, has an 8 megapixel camera on the back with 1080p HD video recording and a dual rear flash, as well as a front-facing camera for video calls.

Why Smartphone Botnets ?

Why phones? Why are hackers building bots targeting mobile phones? The answer is simple, the Smartphone market is huge with nearly 60 million phones sold in Q2 of 2010 alone. Easy development, the bots should be trivial for hackers to build with the top three Smartphone platforms being similar to the top three computer operating systems, Linux (Android), OSX (iPhone), Windows 7 Phone (Windows). More toys to play with, once the phone is compromised hackers will have access to a GSM modem, digital video camera, your email account and the ability to proxy calls and send text messages from your phone without you knowing.

Poor Smartphone Security

Your Smartphone is always on, it’s always connected to the Internet and it has no firewall. Targeting mobile devices for bots is like going back in time 10 years and looking at how PC’s were connected to the Internet, directly connected with a modem without a firewall of any kind, it really is a no brainier why hackers are moving into this realm.

How will I know if my Android is Owned ?

You wont the bot runs at the base OS level, they can use your GSM modem, access your files, email accounts, contacts, send spam mail and even send texts to help spread the bot further. If a friend of yours who you trust sent you an SMS text saying “Hey Mate, check out this awesome app it downloads 100 hot girl pics to your phone everyday! It’s banned from the Market Place get it here http://blaaaahhh.com” chances are your going to trust your friend and click the link. The bot will then infect your phone and send out SMS messages to your contact list and grow the Botnet, kind of like the Borg on Star-Trek.

Georgia Weidman created a Botnet for Android and has created a public release here on her blog GRM n00bs and you can grab her presentation here.

Here is a video of Georgia doing a talk at Shmoocon about her Smartphone Botnet, how it works and what it’s capable of.

Apple have managed to stay clean on the Malware front by checking all Apps that go on sale in the App Store. Android seemingly do less or no security checks with Malware showing up in the Market Place more than once. Malicious users can always trick users into installing from a 3rd party location in the same way people have been tricked into install Malware on computers for years “Install this app now, get it before it goes live in the Market Place” or the classic “Your Android phone is infected with Malware click here to install Android Anti-Malware!”.

Apple’s App Store provides a shield against Malware for iPhone users, however iOS users should not get complacent as the JailBreakMe exploit proved even iOS can be exploited remotely from simply visiting a website.

How long will it be before we see MalwareBytes for the Android…

RIM were depending on its new PlayBook to increase sales as demand for its BlackBerry phones diminishes, according to Bloomberg RIM may have shipped just one of the tablet computers last quarter for every 19 iPads Apple sold.

The company will report their earnings tomorrow, estimated sales are about 490,000 PlayBooks for first full quarter of sales, according to a Bloomberg survey of analysts, compared to Apple’s 9.25 million iPads shipped last quarter. Analysts cut estimates for full-year PlayBook shipments, to an average of 2.2 million, according to the survey.

“RIM overplayed the PlayBook in terms of its sales and prospects,” said Charlie Wolf, an analyst at Needham & Co. in New York. “What this really shows is that the company’s prospects will depend on the next generation of BlackBerrys.”

When RIM first disclosed plans for a tablet last year, analysts including Tero Kuittinen, then at MKM Partners LLC, said the device had the potential to evolve into a significant new product category. Yet RIM didn’t get the 7-inch tablet to market until April, a year after the first iPad and behind rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co. Even then, RIM drew criticism for introducing the PlayBook without dedicated e-mail or instant messaging and a shortage of consumer applications like Netflix Inc. (NFLX) movies.

RIM will ship about 1.5 million tablets this year, compared with 39.2 million for Apple and 7 million for Samsung, said Michael Walkley, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity Ltd.

“RIM hasn’t given up on the PlayBook, but it’s clearly off to a poor start,” said Minneapolis-based Walkley, who has a “hold” rating on the company. That creates “huge pressure” on the new BlackBerry phones, he said.

Personally, as soon as I seen the BlackBerry advert boasting that the device supported Flash I had my suspicions that the device was not going to do well…

According to VentureBeat chief executive of Intel Paul Otellini announced today that Intel based Android smartphone will be hitting the shelf’s early 2012.

Otellini said the chip in the new Smartphone’s code named Medfield is based on Intel’s PC based computer architecture. Andy Rubin, the head of Android business at Google came on stage towards the end of Otellini’s last keynote at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco to show an alliance between Google, the developer of the Android mobile OS, and Intel.

In a Q&A session at the end of the talk Otellini said we will see multiple vendors from around the world launch Medfield based Android smartphone’s in 2012. When asked why Intel might succeed after years of failure in the smartphone industry Otellini said “We finally got it right”.

Originally Nokia were going to build phones with Intel chips, however they jumped ship and used ARM architecture with Microsoft’s Windows 7 Phone.

Rubin held up a Medfield based smartphone on stage. It had a big 4 inch or so touch screen and looked like it was about a third of an inch thick. Google might very well be the manufacturer of that phone, since it bought leading phone maker Motorola for $12 billion, said Mark Stahlman, a partner at information consulting firm TMT Strategies.

“I think this is the real thing,” Stahlman said, after he saw the keynote speech. “It could grab a lot of market share.”

Sprint are the newest carrier to join Apple’s iPhone family and are about to go through the biggest retail launch the company has ever seen with the iPhone 5.

With this in mind Sprint have told it’s employees no holiday at the start of October, this does not guarantee a release at that time but it appears Apple’s newest partner, Sprint seems to at least think the iPhone 5 release date will be at the start of October.
