According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the telepresence robot is expected to begin full operation in November this year. The robot, reportedly still a prototype, has the height of an average adult and will be equipped with a motorized base, with wheels and a 360-degree head sporting a panoramic camera. (more…)

This patch will be released alongside a bunch of other server updates as well as incoming fixes. According to Blizzard, this post-launch patch will “further address client issues and apply additional bug fixes.” Hopefully this will be able to help introduce some stability into the game, as gamers were subject to quirky servers that had gone all moody.

Apart from that, the real-money auction house does not have a release date just yet, despite being supposed to be made available online earlier this week. However, it was pushed back after the game’s launch recently, and is now delayed indefinitely. Blizzard has just this to say about the situation, “More information soon.” Hopefully their “soon” would jive with our version instead of “indefinitely”, as gamers tend to be an impatient lot.

The doctors at the Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome made the announcement to the public this week but said that the operation was carried out last month. According to the doctors, the baby was suffering from dilated myocardiopathy, a heart muscle disease that causes enlarged fibers in the heart.

The disease gradually makes the heart weaker, stopping its ability to pump blood effectively. Doctors reportedly used a tiny titanium pump that weighs only 11 grams and can handle 1.5 liters of blood flow in a minute. The doctors said that the device was invented by the American Doctor Robert Jarvik. The tiny titanium pump, allegedly considered as the world’s smallest artificial heart, had only been previously tested on animals. The hospital reportedly asked special permission from Dr. Jarvik and the Italian Health Ministry before the operation. Surgeon Antonio Amodeo said that the device could be used more often in the future to help more patients.

Microsoft has subsequently stepped forward with this statement, “We’re pleased the court agreed today that Motorola has infringed Microsoft’s intellectual property, and we hope Motorola will be willing to join other Android device makers by taking a license to our patents.”

Motorola, recently purchased by Google, mentioned, “We expect a written decision from the court on June 1 and upon review, will explore all options including appeal.” Both companies are currently battling it out legally worldwide, and this is something that looks set to be more and more common these days where intellectual property of software features are concerned.

Patents are the new ammunition that companies ought to stock up on if they are going to survive in this new generation of business warfare, so do expect law degrees to remain in fashion for quite some time to come.

Hey, if Hollywood can come up with a 2-hour plus long action movie that is based on the Battleship game, why not come up with a movie of a game that is well played and loved by millions over the decades – Tetris? The trailer above is a hoot to watch, as you see various tetrominos hurl downwards towards the earth, with some sort of strange power rotating them all over the place. It would be interesting to see whether the I tetromino would be as rare as the game, appearing when you do not really need it, and never popping up when you need it the most.

Described as a “total extinction level event”, do bear in mind that this is a fake video game movie adaptation, mocking “Battleship”, and yet the production values can be said to be commendable. It has also taken some jabs at Hollywood’s tendency for overly dramatic action films in recent memory. I do wish that someone would have the budget and mind to come up with an actual movie of Tetris, it would then be great to see how everything pans out in the end.

The challenge, one of the many projects that NASA is sponsoring, was originally announced in 2010. NASA is looking for an autonomous rover that can be sent on planetary missions in the future. The Sample Return Robot Challenge will involve unmanned robots – approximately 1.5 cubic meters and 175 pounds – that are capable of navigating and exploring varied terrains and environments while searching and collecting items.

However, the autonomous rovers will need to accomplish the tasks without the aid of a GPS or any Earth-based systems including the Internet. The rovers will also not be allowed to use air-cooling or ultrasonic Rangefinders because of the lack of air in other planetary environments. NASA is reportedly spending $1.5 million on the contest that will be held this coming June 16. A total of 11 teams from across the U.S. and Canada will be competing during the said date. Some of the contenders include the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Waterloo, SpacePRIDE and True Vision Robotics.

What happens when the referee in a football match makes the wrong call, robbing a team of a goal, or awarding a ghost goal instead? That is part of why football is so exciting, as the error in judgment when humans are involved add more tension to the game. Of course, other sports like tennis have already adopted the Hawk Eye system, where line shots can be called by a player up to a certain number of times as the speed of the ball might move too fast at times for the linesman to make the right call. Glad to know that the footballing world will finally see goal-line technology undergo a trial at Wembley in England as the Three Lions host Belgium in a friendly this coming June 2nd as a warm-up to the Euros. (more…)

We have a rather lengthy explanation on what rooting on Android devices is all about, so you might want to head on there first before continuing with this bit on how to root your HTC EVO 4G LTE device. The process does seem to be pretty simple, where the HTC smartphone relies on a similar exploit as that of the Asus Transformer Prime – after having Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich up and running on it, of course. All you need to do is make sure the relevant drivers are installed before you run a simple script, and you are good to go. Just bear in mind that rooting will your device will automatically void any warranty that is associated with the device, so go ahead at your own peril. It would also be best to make sure you perform a backup of all the data on your device before you make an attempt at rooting the HTC EVO 4G LTE. After all, you can never quite tell just when Murphy would strike.

In fact, what you see above is a Windows 8 tablet from Dell, which has been dubbed as the Dell Latitude 10. The Latitude 10 will measure 10″ x 7″ x 0.4″, tipping the scales at 1.57 lbs, making it slightly thicker and heavier compared to the iPad, but not that noticeable that you would have it tire you out. Under the hood, you will find an Intel Clover Trail Atom Dual Core processor running the show, where it is accompanied by 2GB RAM and an Intel integrated graphics chipset. (more…)

And boy, Tyler was right when he said that the Android community will find a way around it soon. Apparently an XDA member who goes by the name grankin01 was able to “unofficially” unlock the device by tricking it into thinking that it is the One XL from Rogers Canada. So, if you’re willing to give it a try, keep in mind that doing so will erase everything on your device. So please back up accordingly and don’t say we didn’t warn you okay? Full instructions on how to unlock AT&T’s HTC One X will follow after the break. To understand more about rooting for Android, you can check out our nifty guide.

In fact, we now have word that there is a possibility of a new tablet from Asus known as the Transformer Pad TF300TL arriving soon, especially after it has gone through the FCC while picking up the relevant nods of approval from the powers-that-be. The Transformer Pad TF300TL can be said to be a variant of the TF300 model, sporting the 850MHz/1,900MHz frequencies which are required if it were to play nice with the HSPA 3G network, in addition to having 700MHz/1,700MHz frequency support to cater for LTE-based 4G. This would strongly suggest that AT&T will most probably be the carrier to offer this particular tablet should it hit the market eventually.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 that comes with a dual-core processor inside might arrive with Android 2.3 Gingerbread right out of the box, but fret not – if the promotional video (which was leaked, by the way) is true in any sense, then you can have some hope that it will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in due time. In the video that you can view above, at 0:14, the label on the phone says “ICS upgradeable”, although that kind of hope is blighted by the fact that no concrete release date was shared with the masses. (more…)

Yes sir, the latest two additions would be Welsh and Latin American Spanish. Google prides itself in catering to the minority as well as majority, as languages are said to be able to provide a sense of identity, pride, a sense of belonging as well as spiritual guidance to communities. With Gmail being available in Welsh and Latin American Spanish now, you might want to go ahead and make that language selection as your default language in Settings.

Welsh is not a dead language – on the contrary, it is very much alive, and is being used by an increasing number of speakers. I absolutely love the way some roads and places are named in Wales, with the nigh unpronounceable words getting one all tongue tied. As for the Latin American Spanish version of Gmail, it was specially designed to cater to the expectations of Spanish speakers in the Americas.

There are also advancements such as Face Unlock in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but I believe that nothing is quicker than using your fingers. (more…)

There were other improvements too that you might want to check out if you were not able to grab the update yet. Adding to those nifty changes are rumors from The Verge. Today’s update seemed to have left a few hints of what Google could bring in the next updates.

According to the publication, a source of theirs has allegedly confirmed that references to new features called “Events” and “Local” were found inside the APK listed alongside Photos, Circles, and the other modules currently found in the app’s navigation pane. The Verge, however, admitted that the discovery doesn’t mean that the features – “Events” and “Local” – will be coming soon, but insisted that they are indicators that Google is planning to revolutionize its social network. With interesting rumors like these, it is important to take it with the finest grain of salt, so as not to be deceived.

That’s because the North Carolina Utilities Commission has approved Apple’s plan to construct and operate a 4.8-megawatt fuel cell facility at the data center, providing green power for at least a portion of the electricity needs of the huge location. If you can still recall, we already told you about Apple’s plan to build the a fuel cell facility in the area. Also written in our previous post, we mentioned that Apple has already filed the necessary requirements to the North Carolina Utilities Commission, where the fate of the project will be decided.

Apple will reportedly use natural gas-powered fuel cells called “Bloom Boxes” to generate electricity, exhaust CO2, and water to the environment with no combustion byproducts. Apple’s 4.8-megawatt fuel cell facility will be the nation’s biggest private fuel cell energy project. Last week, the North Carolina Utilities Commission also approved Apple’s application to build a 20-megawatt solar farm in the area adjacent to its Maiden, North Carolina data center. We first heard about Apple’s solar energy plans in February this year.
“Today we’re expanding the Transparency Report with a new section on copyright.
Microsoft has just announced that Bing now uses Nokia’s Backend Services to retrieve traffic information and Geocoding (which means mapping information based on its geo-location). Both companies have been working on this for “a lot of time” according to Microsoft, and the overall goal is to get users better information so that they can get from one place to another quickly.

It’s not like Bing Maps didn’t have traffic information before, but basically Nokia brings better coverage on the table. In addition to just having more data, Nokia also has more data in more countries, and this is arguably a critical component for any worldwide success. Anyhow, this updates launches in 24 countries today, and I’ve pasted the complete list below:

Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UAE, United Kingdom, USA.

You may have noticed that NVIDIA’s current Icera i410 LTE modem has been approved by AT&T, but the future is of course the “integration” of LTE (and LTE next, says NVIDIA) into the Tegra chips. Of course, the name Huawei Ascend G312 QWERTY does not sound too appealing at all to the man on the street, which is why a simple exercise of changing its designation to that of the T-Mobile myTouch Q would go a long way in ensuring that it will have its fair share of fans when made available. Expect the T-Mobile myTouch Q to carry quadband GSM/EDGE and 850/AWS/1900/2100 HSPA+ support, in addition to a 4″ WVGA display, a 1.4GHz MSM8255T processor, 1GB RAM and 4GB of internal memory which can be further augmented using a microSD memory card slot.

This particular update is a minor one though, and is also one which Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 owners have been waiting for for quite some time already. Apart from Wi-Fi sharing and tethering capabilities that will be enabled by default on the Tango update, there are also other performance improvements made. (more…)

Apparently not, as it seems as though Samsung has recently filed a patent application for a speech recognizing robot. This patent application described an automaton which is capable of adjusting its voice detection capabilities in order to take into account ambient noise that might interrupt or disrupt commands given, while recognizing those who are speaking to it even if the background noise is unusually loud. No idea on just what the robot will perform after you have issued commands – perhaps it will go around cleaning up your room? Well, it seems as though this is still a distance in the future, as it would certainly take a fair amount of effort for a robot to perform complex duties that only the human body and brain can handle.

Sometimes, we do come across and idea that makes us kick ourselves in the butt simply because it should have been thought of before. Case in point, the MinuteKey kiosk. Most of the time, duplicating a set of keys often requires you to come into contact with another human being who will then throw a close look at the bunch of keys that you want to duplicate, before affixing them to a machine and grinding out the right “teeth”. Well, the MinuteKey kiosk works differently, where it has the proud boast of being more accurate compared to the handiwork at majority of the hardware stores out there. A key will cost you $1.49 to duplicate, while a trio of keys will cost $3. Not only that, whenever you choose a key, you can also select your own decorative key design.

One thing though, the MinuteKey kiosk will not do car keys, which some might see it as a good thing. Unfortunately, if you do not own a credit card, you are unable to use the MinuteKey kiosk since it does not accept cash at all. Expect to hunt down the MinuteKey kiosk in select Lowe’s, Costco, Sears and Walmart stores throughout the country.

As you may have seen, Facebook does take photos very seriously and has spend one Billion dollars to buy Instagram recently. Yet, the company didn’t wait for some kind of integration with Instagram to improve the Facebook mobile photo experience – which was in dire need of an improvement.

With the new app, users can -and share- videos much more easily than with the regular app. For example, it is now possible to upload several photos at once – something that sounds seemingly simple, but was not available before. The application will show up in the App Store later today, and it seems to be a welcome improvement to one of the best Facebook feature. (more…)

If you have a penchant for war games, then you might want to check out the playable demo of Steel Battalion Heavy Armor over at Xbox LIVE. Using the abilities that come with Kinect, gaming in the war zone has gotten far more interactive than you could have imagined. You will be able to relive the feeling of war (without fear of actually coming home in a coffin that has been wrapped up in a flag, of course) by taking control of a Vertical Tank, while checking up on your team members with but a swipe of your hand. Need to see what is going on in the distance? Not a problem, just lift up your hands to your eyes as though a pair of binoculars are in your hands, and watch the screen zoom in on all the action far away. Steel Battalion Heavy Armor is an Xbox 360 exclusive that is slated for a June 19th release in North America, while our friends across the pond will have to wait until June 22nd. The demo itself weighs in at 1GB, so you might want to be a bit patient as it downloads.

3D printers look set to be the future of printing, which is definitely a step that can be said to be similar in nature to the leap from black and white printing to color prints. The RepRap is a 3D printer which is said to be able to print out its very own parts – helping you repair your printer without having to head down to the nearest service center. You would definitely need to have your fair share of DIY skills, however, as I am quite sure that taking apart a printer and putting it back together again is nowhere as fun or as easy as playing with some LEGO bricks. (more…)
