Nokia N97 Review

The Nokia N97 is the tip of the spear in Nokia's smartphone lineup. It is the most powerful, smartest and fully featured phone of the company. It is also the first Nokia phone to make use of a large touch-display and that alone has raised the expectations from die hard Nokia fans that have refused to switch over to the iPhone. And Nokia has put quite a lot of work and thought in the N97. I had a first look when Nokia was still developing the N97 and I was looking forward to get my hands on the final product. In this review, I will tell you how I used it, and how well it did. Does the Nokia N97 live up to the hype?

Buddha Phone Hits The Market

Now here's a handset that will definitely target those who are a wee bit superstitious, as they tote around a functional deity in their pockets. Enter the Buddha phone - a luxury gold-plated cellphone that comes in a strangely circular shape and a very Buddhist-inspired design. Features-wise, this is nothing to shout about, ranging from a 2" LCD display to a 1.3 megapixel camera, dual SIM card slots, an integrated FM radio, audio and video playback, alongside a microSD memory card slot. It retails for $123 but doesn't come with any karma points unless you purchase similar handsets for the rest of your family.

Chasercam Sports Camera

Love the great outdoors and living the rough-and-tumble lifestyle? That's what the Chasercam is for - this intelligent sports-camera comprise of a couple of parts - the camera (with base) and the sensor target. Once activated, the camera turns on it’s base and up and down, looking all over the place for the sensor target. All you need to do is place one of these onto the person doing the tricks, while another is stuck onto the person chasing the, well, trickster, for total coverage. It would be interesting to see what kind of home videos will materialize out of this concept though.

F88 Netbook

The F88 netbook might throw you off balance the first time you lay eyes on it, as it might be mistaken as the Asus Eee PC 1002HA. Upon closer inspection, however, you will realize that this model will be powered by a 1.6GHz VIA Nano processor alongside a VX855 chipset. Other features include an HDMI output, the VIA S3 Chrome 9 graphics chipset, up to 4GB RAM, Wi-Fi connectivity, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, optional Bluetooth and 3G modules alongside a hard drive bay that can hold anything from 60GB to 500GB, depending on your budget.

Nokia 3720 Classic Introduced

Nokia is hardly a fan of rugged handsets, but guess the Finnish phone manufacturer has made an exception this time round with the 3720 classic that comes encased with durable materials, and has been carefully sealed in order to protect its precious innards. This leak-proof design will come in a wide range of colors, and the battery cover itself is locked with a screw for added protection. Guess folks suffering from "SIM card registration failed" problems might find the screwed in battery cover a hassle, so it would be best to tote around a Swiss Army Knife with you at all times just in case. Apart from an LED flashlight, the Nokia 3720 will also come with add-ons such as Nokia Maps, a microSD memory card slot and a 2.2" display. Expect this handset to ship for 125 Euros before taxes and subsidies this summer.

Sony Offers Netflix-enabled Bravias

Sony's line of Internet-ready Bravia TVs now offer access to Netflix, where newer sets come with built-in support while older models will have to settle for the add-on Internet Video Link. You will be able to access the Watch Instantly queue and stream movies or TV shows straight onto the set, although it remains to be seen whether such footage is in HD or not. This update will be out later this fall, and will nestle itself comfortably between existing live services such as Amazon Video On Demand and Sony's very own movie collection.

Peek Looking For Linux Developer

Peek, manufacturer of the email-only device, is currently looking out for a Linux developer to come up with a distribution of the ARM7-equipped machine. This calls for interesting times since the Peek, being a pretty self-sufficient machine as it is, requires but a couple more features to qualify itself as the perfect text-messaging handheld.

XCM Eye Candy Nintendo DSi

Love your new Nintendo DSi? Why not make it even more lovable with the XCM Eye Candy? This replacement shell kit will turn your plain colored DSi into luscious candy colors, letting you see through it via a colored transparent case to see just how Nintendo managed to produce such a small wonder. Depending on your taste, you can choose from candy apple red, emerald green, electric blue, clear shell and matte black and white colors. All kits will be equipped with a color-coordinated shell alongside matching buttons in order to complete the look, and XCM is kind enough to include a proper screwdriver in the kit itself, doing away with the need to carry around extra tools during the shell replacement process. Just make sure you read the detailed disassembly and assembly instructions carefully before you proceed with this $25.99 project.

Affordable Android Handset Coming

Rockchip Electronics Company is but a MP4 chip supplier from Fuzhou, China, but that doesn't mean they will just maintain status quo with their line of products, right? Well, they are about to delve into the world of Androids with a trio of mobile chips - the RK2718,RK272 and RK2808. The RK2808 would be the first mobile chip from China that supports Android, and Rockchip has plans to roll out a RK2808-based portable media player sometime in autumn this year, followed by their very own Android handset later this October. Needless to say, this Android handset will be powered by the similar RK2808 chip. It would be interesting to see just how ridiculously cheap Android handsets get once the RK2808 takes off.

Samsung Expands Spinpoint N Line

Samsung has led another technological breakthrough with its Spinpoint N line, where the 1.8" N3U hard drive is capable of holding up to 250GB of storage space, spread across two platters. This new hard drive ought to up the ante for portable media players as well as netbooks that want to achieve a similar capacity as that of a 2.5" notebook drive, albeit in a much smaller and portable form factor while sipping 40% less juice in the process. In addition, the N3U connects via USB, making it suitable as an external hard drive to boot. All versions of the new Spinpoint will spin at 3,600RPM and feature 8MB of cache, although you can still opt for the 120GB, 160GB and 200GB capacities to suit your budget. Prices max out at around $199 for the 250GB drive.

Mac Malware Numbers Grow

Guess owning a Mac isn't that safe anymore either these days with the numbers of attacks on the Mac OS X growing no thanks to Mac malware. While it is still extremely small compared to the figures bandied about for PCs, the figures are there and disturbingly enough, they're growing. The latest threat would be Puper - a Trojan disguised as a video program for the fictional MacCinema system on OS X. Apparently, this malware attack is staged to look like a disk image, which will subsequently launch an installer application for the non-existent software. Once installed, the infected Mac will be home to a malicious script file known as AdobeFlash that will launch itself punctually every five hours while attempting to download and launch other malware on the system.

Samsung Develops Folding Keyboard Design

Samsung aims to be at the forefront of technology once again with their new folding keyboard design that has been patented, featuring a rear keyboard system that uses two folding half QWERTY keyboards. They're both inconspicuously tucked away within the body of the handset, leaving more space for the display. One can't help but wonder how the new layout will affect text entry, so hopefully the buttons will be adequately sized in order for fast typists to get their message/email across in a flurry of finger movement.

Solar Powered Marin County Fair

Talk about going green at a fair - the Marin County Fair will be solar powered thanks to to huge photovoltaic arrays which provide up to 40% of the fairgrounds’ annual power usage. If you're curious to check out the fair's solar power source, take aride aboard the ferris wheel and you'll be able to spot it from a stellar birds-eye view of the grounds. Another attraction at the fair would be the Electric Wheels Car Show that showcases a wide range of green vehicles, including a Tesla Roadster to UC Berkeley’s solar powered race car among others. Not only that, the Marin County Fair is also home to the world’s first solar-powered carousel.

Razer Moray+ Handles Consoles Too

Razer's latest Moray+ headphones show that the company listens to their customers when they said that they want a microphone, since that feature has been integrated into Razer's most recent release. The Moray+ will play nice with your Sony PSP-2000/3000 models alongside the Nintendo DS and DSi handheld consoles, boasting a thicker cable that is not only more durable but doesn't get that tangled easily. Despite all the goodies within, the Razer Moray+ still comes in a tiny, compact chest that boasts extended bass, passive noise isolation and interchangeable ear-buds for optimal comfort.

Wiimote Controls 15 Ton Grapple

Talk about having nerves of steel - this specially modded Wiimote can be used to control a 15-ton grapple that has a 16 meter reach, so your trigonometry had best be good since you would probably want to stay at least 17 meters away from this bad boy while your mate is holding the controller. Accidents do happen, you know, which is why they're labeled as such. Either that or push your luck and get a fat insurance policy beforehand…

TV TrickleSaver Reduces Power Bills

How does the TV TrickleSaver help you save on your monthly power bill? The answer is simple, really, as it will automatically turn on or off all peripheral devices whenever you shut off your TV - making sure that the vampiric standby mode of your TV and other devices won't add up to a huge amount over a period of time where your power bill is concerned. Guess the TrickleSaver is worth its $34.95 price tag in the long run, so make sure you develop the discipline to use it in order to reap maximum benefits from it.

Fabric Camera Developed

Trust the boffins at MIT to come up with a camera that uses light-sensitive fibers instead of a lens. This camera supposedly can “measure light intensity distribution at different wavelengths across a large area.” Apparently, all information gathered by the fabric will be fed into a computer for further processing. Don't go getting funny ideas just yet on how to best take advantage of this by uploading secret voyeuristic videos with this - it will still take some time before wearable cameras that offer 360 degrees of vision to the wearer are available to the masses.

Bike-Car Actually Exists

Guess being beautiful runs through Italian blood, as with this Bike-Car that is totally not a concept. The person behind this idea must've felt an equal pull of both a superbike and a sports car, resulting in this amalgamation that seems to reside in no man's land. Well, good luck trying to obtain a license with this thing, and we wonder what the road safety test results are like. One thing's for sure though, this will definitely turn heads wherever you are.

Gummi Lights Looks Sweet

Most kids grow up with a deep love for candy, and among them include gummy bears. Well, now that you're all grown up and have a job, perhaps you might want to purchase one of these Gummi Lights that come in a wide variety of colors (but not flavors - they'll all taste like solid rubber) such as red, orange, yellow, clear, green, blue, purple and pink. Each of these Gummi Lights are illuminated by small LED bulbs, and the Gummi Light itself stands at 7” x 4”. Individual Gummi Lights will cost around $125, although a set of five is going for $500.

Anti-Paparazzi Clutch Bag

Being a Hollywood celebrity does have its perks of people adoring you while you maintain a more than healthy bank account balance. On the other hand, life can get quite stifling with people all over the world trying to find out more about your everyday life, letting you be introduced to pests known as paparrazi. Here's the Anti-Paparazzi Clutch Bag that ought to do the trick for you - it comes with a tiny microcontroller, LED lights and a sensor which is capable of detecting bright flashes from external sources, firing those LEDs away in order to overexpose any shot just like the image shown above. Needless to say, such an idea works only at night or in extremely low light conditions.

A-DATA XPG Xupreme 200X

A-DATA has rolled out its 64GB XPG Xupreme 200X flash drive which is the first of its kind in the world to work with the yet unreleased Windows 7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit iterations. It will come coated with an elegant dark grey aluminum color, offering high performance figures in a simple and stylish design, capable of hitting up to 30MB/s (200X) read speed. In addition, Windows Vista users will benefit since this is Windows ReadyBoost compatible for an added performance push. No idea on how much it costs, but it shouldn't reside on the low end of things.

Movement Analyzers

Designer Ricardo Sa Freire has come up with a host of interconnected movement analyzers that are able to discover and analyze body movement, letting this portable device open up doors to a whole bunch of commercial applications courtesy of tiny accelerometers. This works pretty much in the same way as doctors obtaining valuable information on how you move about in order to determine cause and treatment. Future movement analyzers will be used for entertainment, training and extreme sports purposes, leading to virtually endless possibilities.

DustCart Robot Trash Collector

Who could forget about the super cute robot known as Wall-E? Well, this DustCart robot trash collector is part of the DustBot project, a $3.9 million research program which begun in 2006 that helps to implement robotics in society in various useful ways including cleaning up streets. Not only that, DustCart is able to collect trash "on-demand" by gathering real time data on the surrounding environment. Hopefully having robotic servants such as these won't turn us humans into lazy bums who won't have second thoughts about throwing away that ice-cream wrapper by the roadside just because you know DustCart is going to pick up after you. Interestingly, the DustCart robot comes equipped with special sensors it monitors air pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, ozone, benzene, CO, CO2 and air temperature.

While Google Chrome OS is hot news on the Internet, one ought to pay attention that Microsoft has already taken a number of months to develop something in a similar vein known as Gazelle, targeting web-based applications. Apart from its name, very little else is known about it, but hopefully Gazelle will live up to its namesake by being fleet and graceful without stumbling over blue screens.
OCZ Unveils Vertex Turbo Solid State Drives

OCZ has rolled out their Vertex Turbo solid state drive that was built upon the current 2.5" Vertex line, although improvements include increasing the clock speed for both the host controller managing data as well as the inclusion of a 64MB cache. Currently, OCZ has estimated peak read speeds of up to 270MB per second (from its previous 250MB) alongside a peak write speed of 210MB per second, which is a vast improvement from the 160MB found earlier. The Vertex Turbo models rely on an SATA II interface to ferry data, boasting benefits associated with SSDs including a lower power usage and a skip-proof design. Depending on your needs and budget, the OCZ Vertex Turbo SSDs will come in 30GB, 60GB, 120GB and 250GB capacities.

Corning To Offer Gorilla Glass

Corning recently announced that its Gorilla glass will be the protective cover glass of choice for the Samsung Ultra Touch range of handsets. Available in a wide range of thicknesses that range from 0.5mm up to 2.0mm, it makes room for providing flexibility in device design alongside glass processing. In addition, it can be adapted to scale various sheet sizes for optimal throughput. The Gorilla Glass is also environmentally friendly thanks to the use of alumino-silicate glass that is produced using Corning's proprietary fusion draw process.

Thanko Silent Keyboard EX

Thanko has rolled out yet another silent keyboard - this time round it is known as the Silent Keyboard EX that emits a mere 44.5 dB, making it 16.5 dB quieter compared to your average keyboard even when your fingers are flying across the keyboard at maximum speed. Sounds (no pun intended) like the perfect accessory if you're one who tends to work late into the night and yet don't want to disturb your partner in the same room. GeekStuff4U is carrying the Thanko Silent Keyboard EX for those who live outside of Japan.

HTC Hero Comes In Pink

Folks who have been hankering after the HTC Hero but do not want the color that it comes in now can look again - this Android-powered handset is now available in pink thanks to the Carphone Warehouse Coming Soon page. Scheduled for a launch later this month, we still do not know which carrier it will arrive with. Just to refresh your memory, the HTC Hero will come with a 528MHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera, a 3.2” display at 320 x 480 resolution alongside the upcoming, slick looking Sense user interface. Which do you prefer - the black, white or pink color?

Asus Eee Keyboard Stripped

The Asus Eee Keyboard isn't out yet, but for those who are not in the know, this is actually a keyboard that holds a whole computer within. The whole idea of this would be to hook up the keyboard to a HDTV via a wireless HDMI connection so that one is able to access Web content over a large screen TV, although that will surely affect your monthly power bill in the long run. When stripped of all its dignity as you see here, the Eee Keyboard will be powered by an Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz processor, with a solid state disk to store all your data alongside a battery. In addition, there is a 5" touchscreen display at 800 x 480 resolution that enables you to use the keyboard without the need for an external display, although we're not sure how long your eyes will hold up until they start protesting. The RAM does look soldered onto the motherboard, making chances of upgrading the memory to be rather slim. There is also a built-in fan to keep things running cool, which means it won't be silent either.

TmaxSoft Goes Up Against Microsoft

While Microsoft is losing market share when it comes to operating systems, that doesn't mean we can discount the software giant's role in this sphere for quite some time to come. TmaxSoft, however, will be challenging the traditional Windows platform with its own operating system known as Tmax Window. It has taken over 300 researchers more than 5 years to develop the system, and TmaxSoft claims that Tmax Window will boast a high compatibility rate with Microsoft software titles. The chairman himself touts that the system is more stable, so perhaps there won't be any more BSODs? Tmax is ambitious enough to chart a route to garner 30% of Windows' global market share by the time 2015 rolls around - do you think that will happen?

Motorola ROKR Arrives In Korea

Motorola will be rolling out the ROKR handset in South Korea, where it will feature a new panorama user interface that supports a trio of separate screens, enabling users to maximize the amount of shortcuts which can be placed on the screen. As for the touchscreen, it slides up to unveil a numerical keypad that can be used for dialing numbers. This is a 3G-capable handset that has enough juice to last for up to 30 hours non-stop, and you can expand its memory by throwing in a microSDHC memory card. If you don't want to listen to your music using a 3.5mm headset, there is always the option to use a pair of Bluetooth headphones. Other features of this music-centric handset include a built-in sound equalizer and SRS WOW HD sound enhancement. Not only that, you will benefit from a DMB TV tuner for Korean over-the-air networks and a 3-megapixel camera alongside a noise canceling feature for calls and a built-in motion sensor. There is no word on pricing as at press time, but you can pick it up in black and red or blue and white color combinations.
