The real world does not have such advanced technology yet, but we are getting close with Zachary, a 12-year old boy who has been diagnosed with the rare X-linked myotubular myopathy disease which affected males only, preventing him from going to school. This has not stopped Zachary though, as he is now testing a specially designed robot that can be controlled using a computer in order to be at school. (more…)

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google could be brewing a new strategy for its Android mobile operating system. A source familiar with the matter allegedly told the WSJ that Google is planning to grant mobile device manufacturers an early access to new releases of Android in a bid to prevent wireless carriers from controlling the devices. That was pretty the plan with the Nexus S, and although it was a great device, the plan was basically a commercial “flop”.

Based on what it has done in the past, Google will usually give one manufacturer an early look at the latest version of the OS to help build a Google-branded Nexus device. You can see that with the Nexus One in 2010 with HTC as its partner, and then the Nexus S announced the same year with Samsung as its partner, and finally the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. (more…)

Perhaps it is time to beef things up a bit with the Honda UNI-CUB personal mobility device, where it offers a similar amount of freedom of movement across different directions, something that walking on your own two feet provide. It does seem to resemble the U3-X personal mobility device somewhat which Honda first unveiled to the world back in 2009, the UNI-CUB will come with Honda’s proprietary balance control technology as well as prides itself in being the first omni-directional driving wheel system (Honda Omni Traction Drive System) in the world. This can be said to be a highly versatile Segway, and it boasts a range of 6km as well as top speed of 6km/h – nowhere near heart stopping, but at least you can get from point A to point B a whole lot faster than a brisk walk.

Despite removing it, it was too late not to know more about the Mass Effect 3 DLC, where it came with a couple of new maps as well as half a dozen more classes. The Hong Kong PlayStation website, according to Kotaku, listed the new multiplayer pack as Rebellion, where its new content would include the following, “The Rebellion Multiplayer Expansion opens two new fronts against the Reapers: Firebase Jade’s jungle reservoir and Firebase Goddess on Thessia. In-game reinforcement packs now include three new weapons as well as equipment, consumables, and six new classes: Quarian Engineer and Infiltrator, Vorcha Soldier and Sentinel, Phoenix Adept and Vanguard. The battle continues – hold the line!” Hopefully BioWare will issue an official statement in due time if this were to be true.

With a sea of gamers trying to log on into Diablo 3 after it was released, there were plenty of gamers experiencing time outs as well as different error messages. Two of the more popular ones we saw were Error 3006, Error 12 and Error 37 – I guess with the turn of the tide, the most popular error now would be Error 3003 as you can see above. Not only that, there are other gamers who have also reported on an Error 75, but so far that error has remained rather reclusive, so it might be some time before she ends up as the flavor of the day. According to Blizzard, they are truly sorry, and have been trying real hard to get things up and running before midnight yesterday, saying, “We’re continuing to work on the issues currently affecting the Americas region, which are resulting in failed login attempts and service issues. While we’ve identified the causes and are working to resolve them, we expect our efforts to require an approximate two hours to complete. We expect game services to fully return by approximately 11:45 p.m. PDT. We apologize for the downtime, and appreciate your continued patience.” Are you still experiencing those errors?

I suppose this is the equivalent of Samsung’s TouchWiz as well as HTC’s Sense, but today, we will focus to see what makes LG’s Optimus UI 3.0 tick. With this being the most recent iteration, it will offer a bunch of what LG calls “enhanced key features”, including Quick Memo as well as special unlock functions. Just what does Quick Memo do? It basically lets you jot down notes on the screen with your finger, and sharing updates via social networks, text messages and e-mails are made easier than ever before. (more…)

While technology has not exactly returned cadavers from the dead, here we are with a 2 meter tall robot that is located in Kunming, China, and what makes this robot installation so special is the inclusion of a surveillance camera in the visor. This camera will send all visual feedback to the nearest police station thanks to closed circuit TV cables that run underground. (more…)

Obviously, which self-respecting software upgrade will come without introducing any new improvements and fixes?
Just a week after Bing underwent a major update which included the availability of a social sidebar feature, Microsoft is now releasing the new Bing in the U.S. Beginning today, people in the U.S. can give the new Bing a try at www.bing.com/new. The newly revamped Bing search engine now integrates search and people in social networks through a dedicated social sidebar. The sidebar, according to the team behind the search engine, will bring together the best of the web – what experts and your friends know – hence, giving you the confidence to act. Road warriors might also find Bing appealing, thanks to its layout that has been optimized for smaller screen sizes and touch input.

The social sidebar will also suggest friends in Facebook who might be knowledgeable about what you are searching. Bing uses public Facebook information and content, including what your friends “like” and the photos that they have shared as the basis for the social sidebar feature. But Bing assures that it won’t match friends based on other Facebook contents such as status updates or check-ins. “Bing also respects you and your friends’ privacy settings so you won’t see friends who have opted out of Facebook instant personalization or blocked the Bing app,” Derrick Connell, Vice President of Bing, said.

According to The Verge, imports of the HTC One X and Evo 4G LTE have been delayed at the U.S. Customs for an investigation involving a previous patent infringement with Apple. “The US availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order. We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval,” HTC said via an official statement. If you can still remember, Apple has won an exclusion order banning the imports of HTC Android devices at the International Trade Commission last December, particularly the patent involving “personal data and mobile communication devices” (Apple patent #5,946,647).

It’s important to note that the U.S. Customs is investigating the One X and Evo 4G LTE with due respect to its previous ruling. So, it is then comprehensible for the U.S. Customs to block the imports temporarily. HTC, on the other hand, is assuring eager One X and Evo 4G owners that they will have the devices soon. “The HTC One X and HTC Evo 4G LTE have been received enthusiastically by customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to get these products into their hands as soon as possible,” HTC said. In case you missed our review of the HTC One X, check it out here.

Well, we have just received word that China Mobile have been talking to Apple about carrying an iPhone in its portfolio, although there is a very high probability that it will be the next generation iPhone that we are talking about here instead of the current model, the iPhone 4S. (more…)

This time around, we have the Pantech P8010 that will come with a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor underneath the hood, and it has all the relevant bands to enable it to run on AT&T’s networks without any issue at all. Apart from that, there is also additional support for LTE on the 850 and 1900MHz bands. No idea on whether the signals that AT&T wants to phase out of current operation will go ahead or be reallocated. Previous benchmark results of the Pantech P8010 do point towards a qHD display, although the final deal might see a change anyways. We will just have to be patient and wait for the real deal to hit the market before we are able to get a glimpse of all the relevant specifications and come to a more comprehensive conclusion as to whether this is worth your hard earned money or not, so stay tuned.

MindWave has just introduced NeuroSky MindWave Mobile for both the iOS and Android platforms, which makes this the first brainwave-reading device for iOS and Android platforms. Just in case MindWave Mobile sounds familiar, it is actually different from its sister-product MindWave, where it will transfer the user’s RAW brainwave data over Bluetooth, ensuring a greater degree of data integrity, and will play nice on the PC and Mac platforms in addition to the aforementioned iOS and Android operating systems. No doubt this will expand the reach of this app across different groups of users. (more…)

There is just something about cockroaches that unnerve me – I don’t know if it is because of their ability to survive a nuclear fallout, or the fact that they are super creepy – especially when they fly around. Here is something that will induce a minor heart attack of those who have a fear of cockroaches – the Gokiraji robotic cockroach. Trust Technology Japan are the ones behind the Gokiraji, where it comes with a simple remote control to help you make sure your most recent prank can be executed to perfection. This compact controller allows you to steer this robotic insect in four directions, but I wonder how you would feel if someone chivalrous in the group gathers the courage to stomp on this $20 toy or swat it with a roll of paper – who is going to pay for the “damages” then? At least there is no gooey mess for you to clean up after with some of the larger sized roaches. Not only that, this is one roach that even the most potent can of aerosol cannot kill.

It might still take some time, and you know for sure that the Canada-based company is not going to have its flames snuffed out in the blink of an eye, as evident by this new patent which was filed, showing off what RIM figures out might have a role to play in the future. The patent filing points towards flexible batteries that have been integrated within holsters which will in turn juice up your smartphone whenever and wherever you are, without having you to look for a spare power outlet. Smart move, and it would seem useful for folks who tend to forget to charge up their smartphones overnight. Do you think this will be compatible with future fuel cell batteries in BlackBerrys if RIM had their way with their patents?

RunCore, the Chinese company specializing in high-performance solid-state drives, has officially launched its InVincible Solid State Disc drive. According to RunCore, its SATA SSD is a state of the art data security that features two buttons that will activate either two of its cool features. RunCore said that its InVincible SSD will allow users to protect sensitive data from third party access in two ways: intelligence destruction and physical destruction. The intelligence destruction is a security feature that will eliminate all the data on the disk by overwriting it with a code. “This overwrite-deletion method ensures that there is no way to potentially recover previous data stored on the device, effectively setting your SSD back to factory default,” RunCore said. If you think that feature is cool, let’s talk about the physical destruction feature. Check out the InVincible SSD in action after the jump. (more…)

Apart from the very interesting VAIO S series that Sony announced today, the Japanese consumer electronics company has also announced its new VAIO Z series, reported to be the ultimate notebook in terms of mobility, speed and convenience. Let’s find out why. Sony said that its new VAIO Z series is crafted from tough and lightweight carbon fiber and aluminum material with a so called ‘hexashell” design. Sony prides its work on the VAIO Z series, particularly for its weight and thin design – just under 1.2kg in weight and only 17mm thin. Furthermore, Sony claims that its VAIO Z series will be the fastest notebooks around, thanks to their third generation Intel quad-core processor. Its 13.1-inch Full HD VAIO Display Premium will bring rich colors and wide viewing angle to its users. (more…)

A group of scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have developed a way to generate power using harmless viruses that convert mechanical energy into electricity. Basically, it works by tapping a finger on a postage stamp-sized electrode coated with a virus. The virus converts the force of the tap into an electric charge. They did it by creating a generator that produces enough current to operate a small liquid-crystal display. This generator is the first to produce electricity by harnessing the piezoelectric properties of a biological material. Piezoelectric materials are powered by electricity generated by exerting pressure on crystals. These materials build up charge when squeezed. Check out the video after the break. (more…)

Today, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of twenty-one newly granted patents for Apple. One out of the 21 patents filed is for a remote control design that works by clipping it to a steering wheel. The said patent, which has never been seen before, essentially looks like the iPod click wheel.

But according to Apple, the notable difference is that its faceplate is touch-sensitive. According to PatentlyApple, what’s even more interesting is that one of the engineers working on this project was a principal designer at California’s famous Frog Design. Frog Design is a global innovation firm that has been working with Apple, starting with the case of the portable Apple IIc, the fourth model in the Apple II series. (more…)

This is not unlike OnLive by the looks of it.

Of course, the main issue when dealing with game streaming games is latency. It’s not a new problem, and we’ve talked about this when OnLive was first demonstrated. To reduce the latency, there’s no secret: NVIDIA or their partners (Gakai was on-stage) need to build data-centers closer to customers. So far, the first one is located in Sunnyvale, so Bay Area residents may see network latency as low as 5ms to 10ms. (more…)

These days, GPUs are fast enough to add a thin hardware layer that translates virtual addresses to physical addresses, along with virtualizing every graphics hardware commands. (more…)

This is one furry yet mechanical toy proved to be the Christmas piece de resistance back in 1998, sending parents into a frenzy to get one of these for their little ones, and with the insane demand, market forces dictated the resale price as triple that of the shelf sticker price tag. Manufacturers of the Furby, Tiger Electronics, have been toying with the idea of bringing an updated Furby to the market this Christmas, calling the next generation Furby ‘Taboo’. You can tell from the eyes that it is no longer just plastic, but it will most probably be some form of low power display that can rearrange the pixels within to denote different “emotions” that the Furby is experiencing at the moment.

Toy expert Peter Jenkinson said,”The image suggests that the moving facial parts have been entirely replaced by an LCD screen. This will prompt lots of talk, not all of it intelligible, on Furby forums.” Other speculations made concerning Furby 2012 include Wi-Fi connectivity built right into the Furby itself so that it can transmit a livestream of video content while interacting with other friends’ Furbys online. I think if parents had their choice, they would not want to go through the crazy scramble all over again for a toy, preferring instead for a more muted Christmas celebration.

Retailing for approximately $31 after conversion, the Koopa Shell USB mouse will come in two colors that are as sure as the sun will rise in the east – red and green. Regardless of the color that you choose, make no mistake about it – the red version is not any better than the green version, quite unlike how we prefer the red shell in the Mario Kart franchise due to its homing ability. Of course, there is always the fabled blue shell, but I guess NCSX decided not to stock that color as it might just obliterate everything else on the desktop with the right amount of active imagination. It would be safe to assume that only the curious and hardcore Mario fans would get one of these, others are better off with a real, proper mouse.

This unique bond will strengthen itself each time you shoot an image, which obtains more and more irreplaceable value along the way. Specially designed to look like a modern keepsake with retro tones, the captured images will be directed to the viewer sans wires right away, where it is the only access point for one to view the images the moment the camera is in close proximity. Since the more you use it, the higher the figure of precious moments are captured, making the Timeless Capture all the more personal and valuable. Tell you what, you can also achieve a similar emotional attachment with a modern digital camera without replacing the SD or CF memory card in there. I guess the Timeless Capture concept is not too likely to see the light of day.

Well, opportunity knocks on the door of scammers who want to ride on the Diablo 3 fever at this moment, where this nefarious group have launched their fair share of scams that include bogus cracks as well as key generator sites for the desperate to grasp at straws as gamers look to overcome the technical glitches occurring on Diablo 3 servers. After all, the fake sites do have their allure as gamers struggle to get obtain legitimate content via regular channels without any success. Some scame sites will end up installing suspicious software on your computer, while other links end up in you viewing unrelated Flash-based games, spam link dumps as well as a “donation experiment”. Just be more careful with all things Diablo 3 that you come across the Internet now and you should be all right.

Those living in Korea have GMs who have already started a thread on the forums to inform affected gamers to manually flag digital accounts so that they can continue their dungeon hacking experience, as this is the only way for Digital Edition players to get their game on at the moment as the GMs painstakingly flag individual accounts. As for those living in Taiwan, the situation is rather more dire since no GMs are around to flag accounts.

Apart from Error 3006, we also have those living in Europe experience Error 37, which translates to the login servers being overloaded – something that is expected considering the sheer volume of gamers who have waited for years for Diablo 3, and are now trying to get their Barbarian’s career jumpstarted. A handful of gamers have also reported “Error 75 temp outage of BNET”, too. Well, all I can say is, once the dust surrounding Diablo 3 has settled (which might take some time to happen), life ought to return to normal, and you should be able to login without any further issues.

Google has just updated their Chrome browser for Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame, bumping up the version number to 19 in its latest iteration. Apart from the slew of bug fixes as well as performance improvements, the spotlight is being pointed at built-in tab synchronizing, enabling Chrome users to open up a slew of tabs across a range of devices, ranging from tablets to smartphones which are powered by the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Basically, this enables one to continue browsing on a different device with all the tabs opened elsewhere to appear. To sweeten the deal, Chrome will also make sure that your browsing history is synchronized, allowing you to take advantage of the Back and Forward buttons. This borders on the magical, and will certainly make plenty of power Chrome users smile as well as casual users finding the user experience to be a whole lot more optimal. The tab syncing feature is said to roll out “gradually over the coming weeks”, so being patient would be the keyword here.
