Steering Wheel for iPhone and iPod Touch

The title explains it all. CDA Digital's new accessory for the iPhone and iPod touch is a steering wheel that does nothing more than to hold the iPhone or iPod Touch while playing a racing game, giving the gamer a slightly more realistic feel of the game and not to mention a little more style too. The basic version has only the wheel, so the player still has to hold it up in the air in addition to the weight of the smartphone. The second has a base with a suction cup mount that attaches to a flat surface, sparing the gamer some muscle work. Needless to say, it works, and no electronics are involved in the steering wheel and therefore should not cost too much, probably somewhere between $20 to $30.

Flourite N68 sports a transparent keypad

Yes, clones can do it too - a phone maker in Shanzai has revealed the Flourite N68 which features a transparent keypad. If you remember, this not so new idea is taken from the LG GD900, launched earlier. However, this imitation lacks the sliding capability available on its original counterpart, but it does sport a 2.2 inch display, dual sim card support, Bluetooth, FM radio, speak up to 13 languages and costs about $70 (480 Yuan). Clone or not, there surely is something fresh about glass and we definitely have not seen the last of these.

Talk about tattooing your mobile phone, MetroPCS and Samsung unleashed the Samsung Messager r450 designed with SA Studios Global, a multicultural marketing agency, and artist Mark Machado a.k.a. Mister Cartoon. The Mexican-American tattoo and graffitti artist, based in Los Angeles, has worked with numerous celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Eminem. This time, he will have his artwork featured on both the case of the r450 as well as the handset's preloaded content in the form of exclusive wallpapers, animations, ringtones and if those are not enough downloadable content from MetroPCS' website. This is not merely putting art on a phone - the first ten units will be auctioned off for charity in August, and a portion of the series' sales revenue will fund community art centers, outreach programmes for at-risk youth and also provide art supplies to local Los Angeles schools.

INQ launches Chat and Mini 3G Social Mobiles

INQ today launches the Chat and Mini, two new 3G social mobiles which now incorporate internet-based Twitter along with Facebook, Skype and instant messaging. These handsets represent a new direction for INQ as the phones are designed from the ground up for mobile internet, where popular internet applications are embedded into the underlying software to enable easy access. The Chat 3G is INQ's first QWERTY device which comes with free push Gmail, removing the cost borne by operators or consumers, while the Mini 3G provides an entry-level social mobile at the fraction of the price of application-rich devices. Both phones come with HSDPA modem for high-speed wireless broadband on PCs and Macs, Brew 4.0 and Java MIDP 2.0 for application development multitasking, and presence-enabled active address book to let the user select how to initiate communication. Seems that best things do arrive in small packages.

Motorola Karma QA1 On Sale Today

The Motorola Karma QA1, announced about a week ago, will be hitting the shelves today. The entry-level full QWERTY slider with easy access to Twitter, MySpace and Facebook via large icons on the homescreen, is aimed at teenagers and young adults. The 3.5×2.5-inch phone has a glass faceplate instead of plastic, giving it a solid feel but it still remains light at 5 ounces. The keyboard is large enough for comfortable thumb typing, with the phone's numeric keypad towards the left side. To complement its social networking friendly appeal, it also comes with A-GPS - probably to help locate buddies in the real world - apart from a whole range of multimedia features. The Karma will be available from AT&T for $80 after a $50 mail-in rebate and two-year contract.

Sony Ericsson today announced the T715 slider phone, available in the third quarter. According to Marketing Business Manager Quentin Cordier, this mid-range handset is for busy lifestyle users looking for a phone with practical up-to-date features. This compact credit card-sized phone has neither CyberShot nor Walkman, but it is 3G-capable with preinstalled Google Maps and Accuweather, 2.2-inch display, 3.2 MP camera with Photo light, FM radio, media player and 90MB storage with MicroSD expansion. Not the Memory Stick. The premium brushed aluminium shell and glossy front makes a complementary packaging. Price is still undisclosed, but mid-range is the keyword here.

Pictures of the Samsung Omnia Pro got briefly published recently, and it is reportedly the rumored B7610 Louvre back in April. Running Windows Mobile 6.1, this smart handset's impressive specs appears to have what it takes to appeal to business professionals and texters alike: wide 3.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, 2 user interfaces (Pro and Media), Wi-Fi with DLNA support, Bluetooth, HSDPA/HSUPA, GPS, 5.1 MP camera with autofocus and LED flash, 800 MHz CPU, FM Radio, MicroUSB, 1GB internal memory expandable to 32GB via microSDHC. Ambient Electromagnetic Radiation to charge Nokia phones

The Nokia Research Centre in Cambridge, UK, is currently working on a phone that converts ambient electromagnetic radiation (from cell phone antennas, Wi-Fi transmitters, network towers, etc.) into electrical energy. In a nutshell, it uses the same principles as an RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology. The prototype device is capable of 5 milliwatts, but the minimum requirement to charge a handset when it is turned off is 50 milliwatts. However, Nokia is also working on coupling with other alternative energy sources including solar, though not as cool as electromagnetic waves. According to Nokia's researchers, a fully-functional device of such can become commercially available in 3 or 4 years time.

After announcing the Satio for October this year, Sony Ericsson will also ship the Aino at around the same time. Main highlights? It comes with Remote Play, which allows remote control and media access to your PlayStation 3. And it debuts the Media Home application, which syncs media content with your PC via Media Go. Japanese College Distributing Free iPhones

Sounds too good to be true - Japan's Aoyama Gakuin University will be giving away about 500 iPhones to students and faculty members in a deal with Softbank Mobile, as part of the new Mobile & Net Society Education and Triaining program. The basic charges will be paid by the university so there will not be any extra financial burden on the students. The catch? To track the students' attendance using the built-in GPS system in the iPhones given to them. There are also plans to roll out tests and handing out assignments on the device as well. Hopefully the balance of work and play can be achieved, knowing how (much more) fun an iPhone can be.

With Nokia’s Ovi Store about to be launched, it looks like Nokia is going to make an effort to take down Apple’s App Store. While Google’s Android Market had 50 selections when it was launched, Nokia says the Ovi Store will have over 20,000 items ready for download, which is a good start, especially since Apple has about 40,000 apps in the App Store. The questions that people are asking is that whether said “items” include ringtones and songs. Obviously that number includes custom apps and WidSets, possibly even N-Gage games. After all, it’s about quality, not so much quantity.

Bell Buys Out Virgin Mobile Canada

It seems that Bell has agreed to take up Virgin’s stake in Virgin Mobile over in Canada. It was previously a 50-50 joint venture between Bell and Virgin, but Bell has agreed to cough up CAD $142m ($121m) and also agreed an exclusive, long-term licensing deal with Virgin to use the Virgin Mobile name. It certainly looks a little confusing for new subscribers, doesn’t it? Bell certainly looks like it’s intent on operating Virgin Mobile as a separate entity, though they might combine some retail efforts.

Nokia N97 Pricing Confusion

At a glance it might seem that Nokia USA understood the anguish of its fans when the N97 was priced at $700 (pre-order price). After all, what would you be thinking if there was a promotional code that lowered the device’s price to $454.35, and even had a BH-703 Bluetooth headset thrown in for good measure? It seems that such a pricing was an error of sorts, as the device was going for $524.25 a little earlier to that, and now it’s back to $629.10 for just the phone on its own. Somehow the deal doesn’t seem so compelling anymore, right?

Well, it looks like Telecom New Zealand has succumbed to the pressure and put off the launch until the end of the month as it resolved “technical issues” that might interfere with Vodafone’s network. If it works out fine, then well and good.

A glance at the T-Mobile Vairy Touch and you’ll be forgiven for thinking that it’s a HTC Touch. The good news is that this phone will only set you back about $75. While the device might physically look like a HTC Touch, the user interface is totally different. In terms of hardware, the touchscreen is reportedly quite good, albeit it takes quite a bit of pressure to activate, which is often a common problem with cheaper resistive displays. Would you pick one of these over a HTC device?
