HTC One X and EVO 4G Delayed at US Customs

The much anticipated HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G smartphones seem to have hit a road-block as the shipment for both phones were delayed as part of an investigation. The investigation in question is about a previous alleged patent infringement with Apple in which the latter won an exclusion order that effectively bans the imports of HTC Android devices at the International Trade Commission last December. The patent in particular is the one involving “personal data and mobile communication devices”.

Twitter for Android Updated; Slew of Bug Fixes

For all the enthusiastic Tweeters out there on Android devices, if you use the native Android application for all your Twittering needs, you should check out the Play Store for its latest update. Apparently the team behind the applications have resolved a few issues and fixed a few bugs that are minor but important. The latest update which is said to update the Twitter application up to version 3.2.2 will rectify some issues with sync settings as well as give users running Android 2.0 and 2.1 devices a better native application. Of course the number of people that tweet and use Android Éclair OS might be relatively few in number but it bodes well that the folks that handle Twitter feel that it is important to keep them serviced as well.

After leaked images and specifications surfaced on the internet a while back, the low-end affordable smartphone was finally announced today by HTC. The phone itself which looks like a mini-member of HTC’s One-range of smartphones comes with lower-end but decent specifications and even comes with the HTC exclusive 25GB cloud-based storage that is provided by Dropbox. The HTC Desire C features a 3.5-inch touchscreen display that rocks a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels, a 600MHz processor which is supported by 512MB of RAM.

With recent rumors about the next-gen iPhone getting a larger 4-inch screen, there have also been speculations that the additional real-estate on the screen will only make the phone taller as opposed to wider. Now a case for your iPhone 4/4S has arrived on the scene and if you squint really hard, you can get a rough impression of the rumored dimensions of the next iPhone might look like. What sets this iPhone case aside from the plethora of other options is the fact that people use their fingers to use the iPhone. Of course you might think that I’m stating the obvious, but I for one have grabbed the folds of my t-shirt more often than I’d like to admit to clean up the finger prints or grease marks that inevitably end up on the screen regardless of how often I wash my hands.

Yzi, Affordable 10-inch Android Ice Cream Sandwich Tablet Launched

There has been a massive influx of affordable tablets arriving at the market as of late. Now, it seems that another one has been added to the mix and this one comes in the form of an affordable Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet from French-based Yzi. The $170 is not as affordable as the Aakash tablet that was purchased in bulk by the Indian government but it is a bit better. It will come with a single-core Cortex-A8 processor that has been clocked at 1.2GHz. It will be supported by a Mali-400 GPU along with 512MB of RAM. It will come with 4GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot that allows space expansion up to 32GB of memory.

Pantech P8010 with AT&T LTE Hits FCC

Sometime in March an unknown device made by Pantech running the Android OS surfaced in some benchmark figure data. From that information, we saw that it was running a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor from Qualcomm and it exhibit signs that it would be landing for AT&T. However, since then, there have been no signs of it. Today however, it seems that the device which has the model name P8010 has resurfaced again but this time it has showed up under the watchful eyes of the folks over at the FCC and it has come out successfully on the other side. As the previous sighting confirmed, the P8010 is packed with the bands necessary for the device’s operation on AT&T.

After all the announcements that were made during the BlackBerry World Conference not too long ago, it seems like RIM has not stopped with new innovations and designs for its line of smartphones and tablets. Today however, a patent filing that was granted to the company shows something quite interesting. The image of the patent filing above shows a holster which apparently houses a flexible battery that has been built into it. The battery that is built into the holster is in addition to the battery in the device itself so it will apparently serve as an additional battery that will charge your BlackBerry smartphone while you are on the go.

A new rumor has surfaced with what is said to be the next installment of Android’s OS. The folks over at the Wall Street Journal had got the information from a person who claims to be in-the-know and he apparently told them that Google is planning to grant mobile device manufacturers an early access to new releases of Android in a bid to stop wireless carriers from controlling the devices. As opposed to what Google previously did by providing just one selected manufacturer an early look at the newest OS, the rumor indicates that it will instead be giving out the early releases to a few mobile manufacturers.

For all you Samsung smartphone users who have been craving for their piece of the sweet and succulent Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, it seems that Samsung has been communicating closely with the local carriers as well as Google to announce a list of devices that are to receive their Android version upgrade “as quickly and as smoothly as possible”. That said however, only the devices that are to receive the update have been announced but there are no specific dates highlighted to indicate when the update will actually land.

Android Applications Can Run on Tizen Apparently

Research in Motion (RIM) had what the company called an Android player for its BlackBerry PlayBook which apparently allowed users to run Android applications on their tablet that was running BlackBerry OS. That said, the fact that another OS can also run applications originally made for Android devices comes as no surprise. In addition to that, as the video above will indicate, Tizen OS which is a product of a collaboration of different companies including Samsung and Intel will be able to run Android applications. The primary application that has to be used in order to access Android-based applications is aptly called Application Compatibility Layer (ACL).

The past is not an indicator of what might happen in the future, but it does cut it pretty close. We do know that Google did cozy up to select partners early access to future versions of the Android operating system in order for them to come up with a kind of flagship smartphone or tablet, as and when the situation calls for it. Well, history has shown that Google did work with just a single company at any one time, ranging from the HTC Nexus One to the Samsung Galaxy S and all the way to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphones, not to mention the Motorola XOOM tablet. The Wall Street Journal claims that this might soon change down the road, and Google might just look into working with up to 5 different partners simultaneously, so that has a very strong possibility of working out to our advantage, since we might end up with a handful of several Nexus branded devices to choose from at once. Even more interesting is the possibility of Google making available those products straight on the Google Play Store itself. What do you think of this unconfirmed bit of news?

We do know that intellectual property and patents are the modern “ammunition” used in corporate circles these days, and HTC is reeling from the fact that they might not be able to sell the HTC One X on AT&T and the HTC EVO 4G LTE as both smartphones are delayed indefinitely by the US Customs simply because there is a very high possibility of an infringement made upon Apple’s patent #5,946,647. Apple picked up an exclusion order against HTC in December 2011 at the International Trade Commission, where the ITC arrived at the conclusion that Android’s messaging app and browser infringed upon an Apple patent. With all the news about Sony devices that were previously unheard off making the headlines recently, we have yet another one that was spotted in Japan by the folks over at Blog of Mobile. The report came with a few specifications and is about the Sony Xperia ST27 ‘Lotus’. The name which has a Zen-like quality about it is said to include a NovaThor 1GHz dual-core processor, a 480 x 854 resolution screen with unknown size, and it is supposedly running Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Back in February during the Mobile World Congress, Huawei announced three Diamond-Class smartphones and of the three, the one that was the most away from the spotlight was the Ascend D1. Samsung T699 Heading to T-Mobile; Could it be the Galaxy Nexus?

A leaked user agent string from T-Mobile revealed a Samsung smartphone that has a screen resolution of 1280 x 720. Prior to this report, we have also heard that the Galaxy Note might be heading over to T-Mobile, but unlike the one in the user agent string, the Note has a resolution of 1280 x 800. This information has restarted the rumor mill and the T699 could possibly be the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Another rumor indicates that the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be bearing the model name T999, so this can’t be that one either although it is a possibility.

With many rumors recently suggesting that the next iPhone will be featuring a larger screen that is said to be 4-inches, there have also been speculations that the phone will be having a taller screen due to the fact that many users still like the width of the current iPhone. From these rumors, the folks over at MacRumors commissioned Ciccarese Design to produce some high quality mockups of what such a device that has a larger screen which just entails a taller iPhone and not a wider one looks like. With the taller iPhone, it would include one row to the iPhone’s home screen that will allow five rows of icons per page as opposed to the current four rows excluding the icons pinned in the dock at the bottom of the screen.

Dual-Core Snapdragon S4 Confirmed for Verizon Galaxy S3?

For everyone who has been hoping to get their hands on the quad-core variant of the Galaxy S3, it seems that some evidence has surfaced that Verizon will be carrying a dual-core Snapdragon S4 variant which is said to be supporting LTE connectivity. This is not the first time there has been information pointing in the same direction. Previous indications that led to Verizon getting the dual-core version as opposed to the quad-core one was an early NenaMark2 benchmark which showed a SCH-I535 with a 1.5GHz dual-core S4. If the information is to be officially confirmed, the purported reason for what seems to be a downgrade is because of 4G LTE connectivity that the Exynos 4 quad-core processor does not offer.

It seems a Samsung device that is still pretty much unknown has received its required certification for both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The smartphone that is just called the SCH-S759 apparently supports CDMA networks and is said to be running Windows Phone 7.5. Given that we recently saw Samsung’s newly released Samsung Omnia M Windows Phone device, this one could be the CDMA variant of that one, but that is just speculation. For now, not much is known about the mysterious device except for what we have already stated above.

After the recent release of Tizen version 1.0, we also bore witness to a prototype device that was given out to a few developers made by Samsung. On top of that, there was apparently even an official pledge of support by Sprint. As for the large scale developer’s conference that was held, it seems that the Linux-based OS was running on what seems to be an existing Android phone. During the conference, the Executive Vice President of Tizen Technical Steering Group Jong-Deok Cohoi showed off a few features including the photo gallery, videos and the very important live calls features which he demonstrated on a device that looked to be the Samsung Galaxy S2 HD LTE.

For those awaiting the Samsung Galaxy S3 in the US, it seems like that development has taken another move in the right direction. The latest flagship device from Samsung just hit the FCC. From the report by the organization in all their detail-oriented glory, it shows that the smartphone supports AT&T’s HSPA+ radios but this particular one will not work on T-Mobile so those users are likely to be stuck on EDGE. On top of that, many rumors have been circulating around the internet about all four major carriers in the US getting the smartphone in addition to a number of smaller carriers.

Prior to this latest rumor, there have been several that were floating around the internet. The first rumor that surfaced suggested that Apple’s next-gen iPhone would feature a liquidmetal casing. In addition to that, another rumor also suggested that the iPhone 5 would feature a metallic back instead. This latest rumor from iMore indicates that the company is yet to finalize the design of the next-gen iPhone. Much like the Samsung Galaxy S3 which had its ‘home’ button reinstated allegedly moments before production began; it looks like the iPhone 5 will be going right down to the wire as well. Of course that is if this speculation is true.

Sometimes it gives us information about a device that is anticipated while at other times it gives us the scoop about devices that we didn’t even know existed. As for today, it seems that the FCC has spat out some sparse details about a 3G tablet made by NEC. When we say sparse, it is actually an understatement because the report from the FCC doesn’t even provide pictures about the alleged device and a little more with regards to the specifications attached to the device.

After the voice-recognition based mobile assistant Siri was launched last year as an iPhone 4S exclusive addition, it has been known for its never-wavering loyalty to Apple. Of course, that doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. Now however, it seems that Siri has suddenly had a change of heart after several reports suggested that when it was asked, “What is the best smartphone ever?” it answered several different answers, one of which was the Nokia Lumia 900. Thankfully, they can probably just fix her instead of firing her altogether.

After HP acknowledged the fact that its TouchPad webOS tablet did not perform up to the company’s expectations, the CEO of the company Meg Whitman did mention that it would be getting back into the tablet game. On top of that, a few leaked documents last month indicated a 10-inch tablet from HP that was apparently in the works. As usual, with leaks, rumors and speculations, we never take them with anything but a pinch of salt until something official comes by. Now apparently, in this case, it has.

Just awhile back, Huawei made an announcement that it would be launching its Ascend Y100 in the UK. Just mere days after that, the company has made yet another announcement of another Ascend smartphone called the Y200 which will head to the markets in the US. The smartphone which was showcased at this year’s CTIA Wireless has been designed with the budget-smartphone market in mind. The affordable entry-level smartphone from the Y range of Huawei device is an example of the company’s latest naming strategy where the ‘Y’ stands for youth and it apparently typifies the mass market, entry-level devices with smaller screens, slower processors and fewer camera features.

iOS 6 to feature Apple’s own 3D Maps?

Reports have indicated that Apple will be using its own mapping software instead of Google Maps in its next installment of iOS. The acquisitions of Placebase, C3 Technologies and Poly9 have led to speculations that iOS 6 will contain the home-brewed application that will allegedly be called ‘Maps’. According to 9to5Mac, “Signifying the application’s complete re-write is a new logo for iOS Maps: it is basically a redesigned version of the current iOS Maps icon with a view of Apple’s 1 Infinite Loop Campus, but redrawn with a new color scheme.”
