Motorola Karma QA1 On Sale Today

The Motorola Karma QA1, announced about a week ago, will be hitting the shelves today. The entry-level full QWERTY slider with easy access to Twitter, MySpace and Facebook via large icons on the homescreen, is aimed at teenagers and young adults. The 3.5×2.5-inch phone has a glass faceplate instead of plastic, giving it a solid feel but it still remains light at 5 ounces. The keyboard is large enough for comfortable thumb typing, with the phone's numeric keypad towards the left side. To complement its social networking friendly appeal, it also comes with A-GPS - probably to help locate buddies in the real world - apart from a whole range of multimedia features. The Karma will be available from AT&T for $80 after a $50 mail-in rebate and two-year contract.

Sony Ericsson Releases T715 Slider

Sony Ericsson today announced the T715 slider phone, available in the third quarter. According to Marketing Business Manager Quentin Cordier, this mid-range handset is for busy lifestyle users looking for a phone with practical up-to-date features. This compact credit card-sized phone has neither CyberShot nor Walkman, but it is 3G-capable with preinstalled Google Maps and Accuweather, 2.2-inch display, 3.2 MP camera with Photo light, FM radio, media player and 90MB storage with MicroSD expansion. Not the Memory Stick. The premium brushed aluminium shell and glossy front makes a complementary packaging. Price is still undisclosed, but mid-range is the keyword here.

Pictures of the Samsung Omnia Pro got briefly published recently, and it is reportedly the rumored B7610 Louvre back in April. Running Windows Mobile 6.1, this smart handset's impressive specs appears to have what it takes to appeal to business professionals and texters alike: wide 3.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, 2 user interfaces (Pro and Media), Wi-Fi with DLNA support, Bluetooth, HSDPA/HSUPA, GPS, 5.1 MP camera with autofocus and LED flash, 800 MHz CPU, FM Radio, MicroUSB, 1GB internal memory expandable to 32GB via microSDHC. For video lovers, it also comes with a TV out and 3.5mm headset jack and Divx/WMV/H.264 accelerations. One cannot help but wonder how does its 1500 mAh battery contain all that. Release date is currently unconfirmed due to some ROM issues, but we should be able to see it September or October this year.

Samsung surprised the world with the launch of the affordable E1107 Crest Solar Phone in India. Appropriately called the Guru, the dual-band GSM handset features a large solar cell on its back cover that when exposed to the sun, can keep its 800mAh battery charged. Ambient Electromagnetic Radiation to charge Nokia phones

The Nokia Research Centre in Cambridge, UK, is currently working on a phone that converts ambient electromagnetic radiation (from cell phone antennas, Wi-Fi transmitters, network towers, etc.) into electrical energy. In a nutshell, it uses the same principles as an RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology. The prototype device is capable of 5 milliwatts, but the minimum requirement to charge a handset when it is turned off is 50 milliwatts. However, Nokia is also working on coupling with other alternative energy sources including solar, though not as cool as electromagnetic waves. According to Nokia's researchers, a fully-functional device of such can become commercially available in 3 or 4 years time.

Sony Ericsson To Launch Aino

After announcing the Satio for October this year, Sony Ericsson will also ship the Aino at around the same time. Main highlights? It comes with Remote Play, which allows remote control and media access to your PlayStation 3. It can also access PlayTV on your PS3, which allows folks in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the UK to enjoy a huge range of free TV channels on the handset. And it debuts the Media Home application, which syncs media content with your PC via Media Go. And still others in the long list of highlights are an 8.1MP camera, A2DP stereo Bluetooth, motion gaming, PictBridge and microSD support. Wonder if someday we can play our PS3 games from half a world away...

AT&T To Sell Samsung Infinity Budget Touchscreen Handset

Samsung is scheduled to release the Infinity - a good-looking, full-touchscreen budget phone - this July 20th. Targeting the mid to low-range phone lineup, it will feature a 3-inch 240x400 pixels touchscreen display, 2MP camera, quad-band GSM/EDGE and dual-band UMTS, along with Bluetooth, microSD expansion and aGPS. It is good looking, which should help it overcome its lower specs compared to its predecessor, the Eternity. And this time, let's hope it will last longer than its name sounds.

Japanese College Distributing Free iPhones

Sounds too good to be true - Japan's Aoyama Gakuin University will be giving away about 500 iPhones to students and faculty members in a deal with Softbank Mobile, as part of the new Mobile & Net Society Education and Triaining program. The basic charges will be paid by the university so there will not be any extra financial burden on the students. The catch? To track the students' attendance using the built-in GPS system in the iPhones given to them. There are also plans to roll out tests and handing out assignments on the device as well. Hopefully the balance of work and play can be achieved, knowing how (much more) fun an iPhone can be.

BlackBerry 9630 And 8520 Release Dates

Eager to pick up a new BlackBerry device? Well, the folks over at BoyGenius have come up with some possible release dates for the BlackBerry Tour 9630 and Curve 8520. It seems that the Curve should be available on T-Mobile sometime in Q4, while the 9630 Tour should be available on Verizon on July 13th. These aren’t official dates, but hopefully they’re accurate and will give us a guideline as to when the devices will be available.

Nokia Ovi Store Items

With Nokia’s Ovi Store about to be launched, it looks like Nokia is going to make an effort to take down Apple’s App Store. While Google’s Android Market had 50 selections when it was launched, Nokia says the Ovi Store will have over 20,000 items ready for download, which is a good start, especially since Apple has about 40,000 apps in the App Store. The questions that people are asking is that whether said “items” include ringtones and songs. Obviously that number includes custom apps and WidSets, possibly even N-Gage games. After all, it’s about quality, not so much quantity.

It looks like T-Mobile is certainly intent on being one of the carriers that provide Android-powered devices, and now word is out that the HTC Sapphire (G2) will sport a 5-megapixel camera, instead of the 3.2-megapixel offering that other carriers use. No Acer Android Phones Until 2010

It looks like we’ll have to wait quite a bit before we’ll be able to pick up the latest Android-powered devices from Acer. While the company has been showing a lot of them at various exhibitions, it seems that the earliest release date for these devices in the US will be 2010, thus missing the crucial holiday season. This pictured render of the “G1 v2” phone certainly looks attractive, especially with its sideway-sliding QWERTY keyboard. If the rumors are correct, such a device might be hitting the retail stores for about $150. The device will obviously be powered by Google’s Android. Bell Buys Out Virgin Mobile Canada

It seems that Bell has agreed to take up Virgin’s stake in Virgin Mobile over in Canada. It was previously a 50-50 joint venture between Bell and Virgin, but Bell has agreed to cough up CAD $142m ($121m) and also agreed an exclusive, long-term licensing deal with Virgin to use the Virgin Mobile name. It certainly looks a little confusing for new subscribers, doesn’t it? Bell certainly looks like it’s intent on operating Virgin Mobile as a separate entity, though they might combine some retail efforts.

Nokia N97 Pricing Confusion

At a glance it might seem that Nokia USA understood the anguish of its fans when the N97 was priced at $700 (pre-order price). After all, what would you be thinking if there was a promotional code that lowered the device’s price to $454.35, and even had a BH-703 Bluetooth headset thrown in for good measure? It seems that such a pricing was an error of sorts, as the device was going for $524.25 a little earlier to that, and now it’s back to $629.10 for just the phone on its own. Somehow the deal doesn’t seem so compelling anymore, right?

Firefox Mobile To Support Auto Login

One of the things that we can’t wait to have on our mobile phones is Firefox Mobile, after all, we’re hoping that it bring what it did for desktop browsing to the mobile scene. Aside from the already known features such as geolocation and gesture browsing, it seems that Firefox Mobile will be getting automatic website login as well, via Weave sync. It will handle OpenID, along with the normal username/password login method.

Is this a picture of a real upcoming Nokia touchscreen phone, or just a clever clone from China? While we can’t confirm whether it’s the real deal or not, we would folks to exercise caution when purchasing such items. The device, dubbed the 5900, might have a capacitive touchscreen, 3.5-inch touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera with on-board 3.5mm headphone jack and a kickstand. The only piece of bad news regarding this is the lack of 3G.

Telecom New Zealand Relents

You might have read the little disagreement that Vodafone and Telecom New Zealand had over the XT network that was supposed to be launched on May 13. Well, it looks like Telecom New Zealand has succumbed to the pressure and put off the launch until the end of the month as it resolved “technical issues” that might interfere with Vodafone’s network. If it works out fine, then well and good.

A glance at the T-Mobile Vairy Touch and you’ll be forgiven for thinking that it’s a HTC Touch. The good news is that this phone will only set you back about $75. While the device might physically look like a HTC Touch, the user interface is totally different. In terms of hardware, the touchscreen is reportedly quite good, albeit it takes quite a bit of pressure to activate, which is often a common problem with cheaper resistive displays. In the current economic climate, it isn’t too surprising to see that Sony Ericsson is struggling a little. Can’t bear to wait for the Android 1.5 Cupcake update any longer? Well, it’s just a few more days, as the update will be hitting Android smartphones in the US next week.
