5 Reasons to visit the Houston Zoo when it's raining

Since last year's drought, I won't ever complain about rain again. It has been wonderfully rainy this week. We've had lots of chances to use our umbrellas and rain boots. But the kids have been a little stir crazy (and so has their mom).

Summer vacation + rainy days = full museums and libraries.

So we headed to the Houston Zoo yesterday. And the zoo is this city's best kept secret on a rainy day.

Our kiddos didn't mind the rain!

Here are my top five reasons for visiting the zoo on a rainy day:

5. Parking is awesome. In the summer, our zoo visits start at 9 AM so we can beat the inevitable crowds. But on Wednesday we rolled in around 12:30 and parked in the fourth row. The rest of the lot was empty.

4. We beat the heat. We all know the saying "Houston is the city that a/c built". But on a cloudy, rainy zoo day, you don't need a/c. It was 79 degrees at 1:00 and wonderful.

3. Keeper chats turn into one-on-one discussions. I love to hear the keepers give the inside scoop on the animals at the zoo. Yesterday we were able to talk with the zookeepers at the elephant and giraffe exhibits. It was great!

2. The animals were active. With the exception of the meerkats, most of the animals didn't seem to mind the rain or mud. They seemed happy to play outside. We were especially happy to see the chimpanzees so active. Not only were there a few chimps by the windows, others were climbing trees and grooming each other.

1. You can be first (or in front) every time. We didn't have to wait in line for anything and our kids always had the best views. We had a front row seat as the Andean bears had lunch. And we were the only ones in the Natural Encounters exhibit. It's always crowded in that building and it was empty. I saw animals that I had never seen before.

The only other person in the Natural Encounters building was a staff member. The kids had a great time running from window to window and I didn't worry about being separated from them!

We did bring a jog stroller with a plastic rain cover and a couple umbrellas. And though we used them a little, for the most part we just walked from exhibit to exhibit in the drizzle. I never realized how many actually had covers over the viewing areas. And it didn't hurt that we only had light rain.

The forecast calls for rain for the rest of the week. Don't let it keep you away from the zoo.

I had GREAT intentions of blogging my heart out this summer once I was out of school. School ended, my whole family got walloped by viruses, and then I just got busy! Having kids does that to you. And since I am a teacher, the summer is when I try to fit in all of my doctor's appointments, the kids' appointments, appointments with the bank, start and finish house projects, teach a couple weeks of summer school and try to have lots of visits with friends and family.

It seems like the initial rush has ended. I have slept in a couple days (if you can call 8:30 sleeping in... which I do!), and I am so happy to bring you an awesome deal that I found.

Foster Fever

This is what she looked like before we took her in.

Joey is just one of the animals we have fostered over the years. I'm getting the fever again. Almost everyone has heard that it is better to adopt from a shelter. But have you considered fostering an animal first?

Why foster?
1) Get to know each animal- what it likes and dislikes, bad habits, personality quirks, etc. No more "blind dates".

2) Give in the urge to bring home the stray dogs you find on the street. If you have a relationship with a foster organization, you can call and see if they have room in the program for the animal. And if they don't, try the next organization on the list.

3) Keep the kill rate at local shelters down. When you foster an animal, you keep that animal out of the shelters. That animal has a much better chance of finding a forever home than those in the shelter.

Now our story...

Our first love was Sadie. We adopted her outright from BARC. And we got lucky. She was the BEST DOG EVER. We lost her three years ago and we still miss her like crazy. We only had a few minutes together at the shelter to "get to know her". We knew it was right and it worked out for us.

About two years later, my husband found this guy on the freeway while working. He had a broken leg and was super skinny, but was a sweetheart. Turned out he also had seizures. We hooked up with a foster organization. They covered his medical and we took care of the housing and love.

He was the first of many. I think we've helped about 25 dogs over the past 6 years. Some of them were adopted out at adoption fairs. Some were adopted after their picture was posted on the foster organization's web site. And a couple (including that cute guy with the broken leg and seizures) ended up as part of our family.

Dog lovers always ask us if it is hard to let go of the animals when they are adopted. Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. It's hard to let go of the ones that fit in with your family. But it also gives us a chance to help another family find a just-right dog to join them.

And sometimes, you don't have to let them go at all.

Keeping Kids Entertained on Rainy Days

For the record... I am NOT complaining about the rain. Really. I know we need it. But I AM looking into my immediate future and I see bored children. These kids are used to being outside. But it has been such a wet week that I had to think of a plan b (and plan c and d) for this weekend to keep the kiddos entertained.
Here are a few ideas...

Avoid the Rain
Stay home! Let the kids build a fort in the living room. Turn on some kid-friendly YouTube videos and have a dance party. Get out the board games. Did your kids get any "crafty" gifts at Christmas? I know my daughter has a sock puppet kit that we've squirreled away. Get them out! Need craft ideas? Here are a few. Go through your DVD collection and pull out an old family favorite. Better yet, pull out the home videos and let the kids watch themselves on TV. They will feel like movie stars and will laugh at how little and silly they used to be! Anyone else save old tissue paper from gift bags? Take it out and PLAY with it. We once used old tissue paper to fashion a skirt for my daughter. You would have thought we'd bought her a ball gown. She loved it!

Ignore the Rain
Get in the car and go somewhere, anywhere. Check out the movies. Beauty and Beast 3D is playing and so is Big Miracle. Head out to one of the museums in Houston's Museum District. Go to Home Depot for the Saturday Kids' Workshop. The craft this week is a keepsake box. Use that Build-a-Bear gift certificate that your little one got for Christmas or birthday. Head to the mall and play at the play place. We usually head to Willowbrook Mall but Memorial City has a pretty good play place, too. My only gripe about it is that it is easy to lose sight of the kids because of the way the play structure is designed. On the flip side, Memorial City does have an awesome two story carousel.

Embrace the Rain
You know that super cute raincoat, umbrella and galoshes that are collecting dust in the closet? Get them out. Put them on. And go for it. If it's not lightning, there isn't any harm in getting outside and getting a little wet. Splash in the puddles. Take a long walk with a big umbrella. Stop and check out the critters that are also enjoying the rain. Count the worms you find enjoying the wet weather (Did you know they don't drown in the water? I learned that little factoid on Wild Kratts. Thanks PBS!). Watch the birds taking a bath in those puddles along the side of the road. Bored and restless children are a bigger hassle than a few wet clothes.

Sesame Street Live is making its way to Houston on February 9-12 at the Reliant Center. Elmo and friends will take the stage for 8 performances. Here are the dates and showtimes:

Thur. Feb. 9, 2012 at 7: 00 p.m.
Fri. Feb. 10, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Sat. Feb. 11, 2012 at 10:30 a.m., 2:00p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Sun. Feb. 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Tickets range from $13 to $45. There is also a $10 fee for parking. You could also park at one of the lots downtown and take the Metrorail to the stadium. The kids might get a kick out of riding the "train".

One hour before the show, a special Play Zone will open up featuring Sesame Street. Admission to the Play Zone is free with your Sesame Street Live ticket.

February=Spring...Only in Houston

What happened to winter? Last year we all froze our tails off and this year winter seems to have stayed away completely. I don't really mind the mild temperatures, but I wish it would get colder (and stay that way for a few days) to kill off the mosquitoes that invaded my yard.

On a positive note, since it is feeling like spring, this is a good time to start thinking about spring break camps for the kiddos. There are a ton of places offering camps. Prices and programs vary. Some places give first priority to members and others are open registration. Here are a few that I have come across:

Books for Little Ones...

As a reader, a mom, and a teacher, I have a few (well, maybe more than a few) favorite books that I read to my little ones. Here are some that I ♥ and you might, too!

The Napping House by Audrey Wood
The Lowdown: Read what happens to a Granny, a child and a load of animals as they snuggle up to enjoy a good night's sleep, only to be awakened (thanks to a tiny flea).
Strengths: The rhythmic language is soothing and makes this a perfect bedtime read.

Not All Princesses Dress In Pink by Jane Yolen and Heidi E.Y. Stemple

The Lowdown: You can wear a crown on your head without being helplessly confined to a tower. These girls do it all: use tools, go fishing, play sports, all while sporting a nice, shiny crown.

Strengths: Great read for girls and boys to counteract the notion that being a princes = helpless.

Pete The Cat by Eric Litwin
The Lowdown: Pete is one cool cat who is starting school. He doesn't let anything worry him, even though he is having lots of new experiences.
Strengths: The book is cute but you can hear the author read it (and sing it) if you follow this link Warning- you WILL be singing this song for days, but it is worth it! Pete also has another book (and video) called I Love My White Shoes. You don't want to miss either one!

Donovan Park Rocks!

Have you visited Donovan Park in the Heights yet?

We are park junkies around here. Every weekend (at least when the temps aren't blazing) we are outdoors. We love Meyer Park, Memorial Park, Hermann Park just to name a few. And there are a few hidden-away parks around our side of town that we frequent. I honestly need to write down the names the next time we go, just to let you in on some of the nicer spots on the NW side.

But Donovan Park? It is not a city park. This park was built and funded by residents of the Heights. And it is AWESOME.

And I am not using that word lightly.

My daughter calls it the castle playground. But there are balance elements, plenty of swings, tons of hiding places around the play structure, slides, as well as lots of open space with a few "Houston hills" thrown in.

I ♥ this park!!!

A Book-Lovers Best Bet

This Saturday the Northwest Harris County Public Library is having its annual January sale from 10-4. This is a great chance to stock up on low-cost quality books. Books start at 10 cents.

All funds collected go towards the summer library reading programs, performances throughout the year and library improvement projects.

The last time I went to the book sale, I picked up several children's paperback books for 10 cents a piece and I remember adult paperbacks started at 25 cents. There were a ton of books to pick through and some seemed as though they had never been opened. I will definitely be there this Saturday!

The Mend Program: FREE at the YMCA!

This is the last session that YMCA Houston is offering MEND (Mind, Energy, Nutrition, Do It) for free. MEND is a childhood obesity intervention program that combines "three key elements of safe, effective weight management and sustained lifestyle change: healthy eating, regular physical activity, and behavior change".

Parents attend two sessions per week with their child. Participants learn skills to help them become fit, healthier and happier.

The program lasts 8-10 weeks and usually meets on Saturday and 1 weekday in the evening. Start dates vary in January and February. Call 281-839-8472 to register.

All of these will keep up the spirits of those uber-athletes running in the 2012 Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Half Marathon and El Paso 5K this Sunday. The 26.2 mile course winds through downtown, to the Galleria, and back again. That means there are a ton of great spots to camp and watch the runners.

My two favorite spots are at the Mecom Fountain at Main and Montrose and then anywhere near San Felipe and Westheimer. Both are located after the turnoffs for the shorter half marathon and 5K, so if you are cheering for someone running in the shorter races, you'll need to scout out a different place to camp.

Bring signs, bells, whistles and horns. Bring water (you'll need it so you won't end up hoarse). If the kids are in tow (and mine will be), don't forget the snacks and a warm blanket.

The first wave starts the race at 7:00 and the second wave follows at 7:10. But with 26,000+ runners, it might take a bit longer to get them all started.

This is Houston's largest sporting event, so get out there and cheer those maniacs, I mean, athletes on! I will be. The Mister is running in the full marathon for the third time. That's him down below.

Monday, January 16th is Martin Luther King, Jr Day. There are celebrations planned to honor Dr. King and his legacy. Houston is hosting 2 parades. But what I really wanted to do today is introduce you to a site I found while searching for MLK Day service opportunities.

I heard a saying recently that was simple but so important:

A parent's life is a child's handbook.

Does your handbook include volunteering in your community? It could be something simple: food/clothing/toy donations, being an active part of your neighborhood association, babysitting at church.

Five reasons you should join the YMCA

January sneaks up on us right as we're stuffing another bite of pie into our mouths.We've just enjoyed a month of feasting between Thanksgiving and New Year's. And when January comes along we don't have an excuse to keep sitting or keep eating.

Sooooo, it's that time of year again. Ready to join a gym?

ME EITHER.

I used to belong to a gym. And I hated it.

And then I joined the Y.
I won't say I love working out, but I do love my YMCA.
Here's why I think you should join...

The YMCA is NOT a fashion show. And by that I mean that you do not need to show up in full hair and makeup and all the matching, cutesy work-out gear. I hated that about the gym. Throw your hair in a ponytail, grab your gym bag, and show up.
Discounted specialty classes for your kids. Ballet, swimming, soccer, tae kwon do, etc. You name it and they probably teach it at the YMCA. All ages. All abilities. I've had my daughter in classes there for 3 years and every instructor has been patient, professional and connected with the kids. There's still time to sign up for spring classes.
Pick your poison (er, I mean your workout). Want a little "me" time to watch your favorite show while you work out on the eliptical? Go for it. Zumba? Yep. Yoga, pilates, spin? They've got those too. Most adult group exercise classes are free with the cost of the membership.And most locations have a child-watch facility if you need a babysitter
Sliding fee scale. Times are hard now, but the sliding fee scales at the YMCA are not new. Does your household make less than $50, 000 annually? Get a 25% discount right off the top. Still need help with membership fees? You can apply for financial assistance. Even if you don't need help paying monthly dues, the price is reasonable.
Location, location, location. YMCAs are everywhere!

If you live in the Greater Houston Area, you are in luck. The YMCA of Greater Houston is offering an open house, this Saturday, January 14. There will be games, activities, prizes and more. And it is open to the public.

Leave that soggy playground behind!

Tuesday might leave parents scrambling to find indoor activities again since everything will still be soaked from today's rain. If you have a preschooler and will be out and about tomorrow, don't miss out on the weekly story time and craft activities at the Northwest Branch of the Harris County Public Library.

Story time starts at 10:30 but you will want to arrive a little earlier (up to 30 minutes) to pick up your ticket.

A story (or two) and songs are paired with a craft activity suited for the preschool set. The meeting room is spacious and parents often bring younger siblings along.

I love their children's section. Check it out while you are waiting for story time to start.

75 and partly sunny? PERFECT weather for ice sculptures!

Well, the artists might disagree with me there, but you should still check out the Dirty Dozen Ice Sculpting Competition on Saturday at Discovery Green. The action gets underway at 10 a.m. and lasts until 5:30 p.m.

One dozen acclaimed artists + chainsaws + blow torches = Amazing sculptures!

The weather report promises that you won't have to freeze while you enjoy watching the artists work. But it also guarantees that the art won't last long.

So get down to Discovery Green early, enjoy the music provided by DJ Caps One, and see the sights.

Admission to the Dirty Dozen is FREE!

Kiddztuff will also have face-painting and sand art stations available for the kids. Activities start at $5.

Hammers, nails, and wood... oh my!

Kids' workshops are held on the first Saturday of each month at Home Depot stores. Children ages 5-12 can join the Home Depot team this Saturday at any local store from 9-12 p.m. to make their own craft.

Kids learn tool safety and do-it-yourself skills while creating their own craft (which they get to keep). This month the planned activity is a Savings Shed.

All sessions are led and supervised by Home Depot staff. Participants receive (and get to keep) a Home Depot work apron, a certificate of achievement and a commemorative pin.

I would have loved this workshop when I was a kid!

Want to see "hidden" Houston?

Hop on a bike and meet at Market Square Park for the monthly Bayou Bikers ride this Saturday, January 7th. This informal group meets at 8 AM once a month.

The rides can be 25 to 40 miles, so this would not be a time to bring the tots along on their training bikes. Instead, I would recommend this adventure for families with teens or parents that have an attached child's seat on their bikes.

The rides are open to all levels of experience but mountain bikes or bikes with fat tires are necessary. Riders will explore the bayous of Houston.

Sounds like a family adventure to me! You might even want to leave the kiddos at home for this one. Take a ride this Saturday and then come back to your favorite spots with your family. That way the children have a chance to fully participate in a ride without parents worrying about tired kiddos.

Best of all... it's free and no reservations are required. Just show up and ride.

Wednesday is the first day of the January session of the Tadpole Club at Jesse H. Jones Park. Designed for three and four year-olds (no older or younger siblings allowed), the Tadpoles Club meets weekly on Wednesdays for the month of January .

Parents can register their tots for the morning session (10:30-11:30) or the afternoon (1:00-2:00). The classes are led either by a ranger or a volunteer, and an adult must attend with the child. Registration is FREE (my favorite!) and as of this posting, there is still room in both sessions.

Classes cover a different nature topic each week. An age appropriate craft and story time make learning time a fun time.

Tour the Toyota Center

For basketball fans, the NBA lockout lasted an eternity. Now that the season has finally started, why not learn a little more about the venue that the Rockets call home?

You can take a tour of the Toyota Center on Tuesdays or Thursdays. On show or game days, tours might be canceled, so it is always best to call ( 713.758.7715) or email for more information. Reservations are required and you can expect the tour to last an hour. Go behind the scenes and visit the arena floor, Courtside Suite, Red and White Wine Bistro, Lexus Lounge, and the Rockets Club.

You might even see some of the Rockets staff and players. Regular cameras are welcome, but please leave the video cameras at home. Don't take my word for it. Visit the web site for more information.

I'm back after taking some extended time off to tend to family matters. I hope you all enjoyed your holidays and spent it with those you love.

If you are not quite ready to let Christmas fade away, you can always catch the 3D version of the Polar Express at the Houston Museum of Natural Science on Monday and Tuesday this week. Show times are 11:30 and 2:30. The show lasts 90 minutes, so I would not recommend it for younger kiddos.

Admission for nonmembers is $11 for adults and $9 for college students (don't forget your ID), seniors 62+, and children ages 3-11. Admission for members is $6.

These are the last two days that the Polar Express will be playing. On Wednesday, the IMAX schedule at the HMNS changes to include new shows.

Via Colori Takes Over Sam Houston Park

The Via Colori (The Street Painting Festival) moves into Sam Houston Park on Saturday, November 19th thru Sunday, November 20th.

This family friendly festival features over 200 artists who will transform the streets near the park (part of Allen Parkway and Bagby) into works of art. Some of the featured artists are local. Others are from across the US and Mexico and include some of the best professional street painters in the world.

There are adult-only activities such as the Street Scene: Search + Sip + Stroll but there is also an entire list of family friendly activities including a Children's Museum Craft Corner, PricewaterhouseCoopers Sand Blast Art, and the HMNS Discovery Zone. Check out the full list here.

Admission is FREE but you will pay for some activities as well as food and beverages (no outside food or drinks are allowed). All proceeds benefit The Center For Hearing and Speech.

Saturday hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday hours:10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
