For this, our traditional end-of-October service of remembrance to honor those who have died and to celebrate the continuity of life, we will together create an altar adorned with items that we think would be beautiful to our departed loved ones. Reflections are shared about those from our church family who have died since last October—Jeanne Bowles, David Hurd, Phyllis Briley, Eileen Lundberg, Shirley Atkin, Des Bragg, and Carol Evans —and we will light candles acknowledging others we hold dear in our memory. A tender service of recognition, affirmation and celebration of this precious life we share.

Forgetting to Heal

<itunes:author>communications@ucdsm.org</itunes:author>

Rev. Improv performances are based on a simple formula of saying “yes” to whatever is given — a word, a scenario, an action — and adding to it to create a rich story of shared authorship. Far from the panacea of positive thinking, this challenging practice can be useful when living through significant change, especially in community. It can be a form of blessing that offers us the authority to change the story while accepting what is given. The Rev. Karen Hering, author of Writing to Wake the Soul (Atria Books/Beyond Words, 2013), returns to our pulpit. On her last visit, she also led a “Communicating for Change” workshop for activists. Copies of her book will be available for purchase after the service, with proceeds supporting First Unitarian of Des Moines. www.karenhering.com

A Festival of Remembrance Service:
For this, our traditional end-of-October service of remembrance to honor those who have died and to celebrate the continuity of life, we will together create an altar adorned with items that we think would be beautiful to our departed loved ones. All who attend are encouraged to bring photos, mementos, special items, etc. that can be placed on the altar early in the service (before the children are released to their classes). Reflections will be shared about those from our church family who have died since last October—Louise LaCroix, Del Nett, James Herteen, John Swanson, Priscilla Witke, Ruthanne Harstad, Brian Browning and David Quinn—and we will light candles acknowledging others we hold dear in our memory. A tender service of recognition, affirmation and celebration of this precious life we share.

Patience and Impatience

<itunes:author />

Rev. When we become aware of injustices in our community and world, we can become fiercely and tenaciously committed to making significant social change – but making a difference also requires a long-term commitment toward that change. The people in our community help us do that. Our people help us to remain clear in our work through collaboration. Our people help us remember that we have a personal stake in our commitments. Newcomers often share that the reason they came to our church was to find like-minded community and a place where they can take a stand for social justice. Even when connection and justice are our goals, some of us find ourselves reluctant to engage each other. Rev. Erin speaks to what holds us back and what helps pave the way for meaningful connection and action with others.
Many Pagans across the country are also members of the Unitarian Universalist churches and fellowships, and choose to be active in the many programs within the individual congregations. Yet, Pagans are often thought of as those rebellious souls who reject the common beliefs about what "church"means. So, what could possibly draw a self-proclaimed Pagan to attend a "church"? What if that "church" was not defined by common theology, but instead, defined by common practice and a desire to better the community and the world? Listen to this"Pagans in the Pulpit" Sunday service, hosted by members and friends of the Sacred Bridges Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (CUUPs) and find out why some Pagans choose to join a church community even as some may be wary that Pagans and "church" just can't be mixed.

Community Beyond Belief

<itunes:author />

Bryan Helmus, member July 19, 2015 Watch the Video (YouTube link) Listen to the Audio (MP3) Is it possible for someone to be a practicing Christian and a member of First Unitarian Church? Managing our own anxiety in the midst of family challenges is one of the most difficult and helpful things we can do for ourselves and for our families. What does holding steady to our principles and our sense of self look and feel like when everything around us seems topsy-turvy? How might we withstand the heat created when we take a stand for self in the midst of anxious systems? What is at risk if we don’t?

November’s monthly theme invites us to be a people of grace. What does this mean for our church? The Rev. Kate Braestrup, a Unitarian Universalist chaplain to game wardens in Maine, shares a vision in her book about prayer for atheists, agnostics, and even theists. She writes, "prayer is an ancient and simple way to prepare yourself for grace, or love, and to learn to recognize it when it comes. Yet...millions of Americans are ambivalent about it." What would it look like to prepare ourselves at First Unitarian for grace, love or even be able to recognize it when it comes? How might we avail ourselves of the spiritual practice and tool of prayer in meaningful ways?

Grace is sometimes thought of as unmerited reward, as a blessing that arrives via divine intervention, accident, or even luck. Might we also think of grace as something that we bring about by how we choose to live, even when life seems to have led us astray? Maybe even especially then?

For this, our traditional end-of-October service of remembrance to honor those who have died and celebrate the continuity of life, we will together create an altar adorned with items that we think would be beautiful to our departed loved ones. All who attend are encouraged to bring photos, mementos, special items, etc. that can be placed on the altar early in the service (before the children are released to their classes). Reflections will be shared about those from our church community who have died since last October. And we will honor the membership anniversaries of our long-time members with a ritual of recognition. A Sunday of memory, meaning and milestones.
