Thursday, October 16th is the Great California Shakeout Event. Departments and units on campus are invited to practice their earthquake drill exercises. At 10:16 a.m., everyone is encouraged to stop what you are doing to practice DROP, COVER, and HOLD On exercises wherever you are. The Great California Shakeout Drill will be simulcast on UCLA’s AM 1630 emergency radio broadcast channel. In addition, I strongly encourage you to take some time to discuss evacuation plans with members of your immediate work unit. Your own personal involvement in safety planning is the most effective way to protect yourself and prepare for emergencies at work and at home.

For information and earthquake safety tips, and exercises you can practice with your work group, see the highly informative pages at http://www.shakeout.org. Please visit www.dropcoverholdon.org for more information and instructions on how to protect yourself during an earthquake. Review additional emergency preparedness resources, including UCLA’s earthquake safety brochure at UCLA’s Office of Emergency Management website, https://www.emergency.ucla.edu. UCLA faculty and staff with valid email addresses in the UCLA Campus Directory and students with valid email addresses in URSA should automatically be enrolled in Bruin Alert, but if you are not already registered, please sign up with Bruin Alert at https://www.emergency.ucla.edu/bruinalert-1/bruinalert to ensure you receive emergency notifications via text or e-mail. There will be test messages to the Bruin Alert system on Thursday, between 10:16 and 10:36 a.m.

Between 10:20 and 10:40 a.m. on October 16, outdoor sirens and voice announcements will be audible around Bruin Plaza; Humanities, Royce, Haines, Powell Library, and areas adjacent to Dickson Court. Other areas with audible alarm coverage will include Bruin Walk on the north campus area, Residence Halls adjacent to Delta Terrace; IM field; and the Ashe & Student Activities Centers (SAC).

Check out mobile apps like the American Red Cross Earthquake app at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/earthquake-by-american-red/id557946227?ls=1&mt=8 and their First Aid app at https://itunes.apple.com/US/app/first-aid-by-american-red-cross/id529160691?mt=8. FEMA also offers an app at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fema/id474807486?ls=1&mt=8.
We encourage you to participate in the Shakeout Drill and hope you will use this opportunity within your unit to review and update your department’s Emergency Response Plan to better protect yourself and the campus community.

In 1969 the Beatles aspired to record an album and perform it live without any studio tricks. However, it was an unenthusiastic effort as they would disband the following year, and contrary to their initial undertakings, the album was edited, overdubbed, reorganized, renamed, and released as their last LP, Let It Be. Music Library staff member Henry Lim together with current and former graduate students of the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music will perform the original unreleased album Get Back arranged for vocals, acoustic guitar, and string quartet. Admission is free, and no reservations are required.
