Some schools have made a name for themselves in performing &amp;lsquo;against the odds&amp;rsquo;, their pupils chalking up impressive achievements in national tests and exams. But still there remains a link between schools&amp;rsquo; circumstances and their performance, and some glaring geographical disparities. 

Breaking that link has been a focal point for education policy and many high profile organisations in education over the past two decades. There are occasional signs of progress, but they have often been modest and faltering. How far can we get with school-based interventions, and are there any such interventions, existing or hypothetical, that we should pursue with greater vigour? 

Come and debate sector leaders&amp;rsquo; views on which policies and interventions we should prioritise in order to cut through this problem once and for all, and what wider reforms would best help more schools in challenging circumstances.

Introducing &amp;#39;What If?&amp;#39; | UCL Institute of Education

Director of the UCL Institute of Education, Professor Becky Francis, announces the launch of a new public engagement series of events.

Through this series we&amp;rsquo;ll be bringing together a range of commentators &amp;ndash; academics, politicians, practitioners, policy wonks &amp;ndash; and pushing them to bring some radical new thinking to some of the apparently intractable issues within education, not least the English education system. 

This can help all of us reflect on the status quo, celebrate progress but also consider how we might change things for the better to achieve commonly held goals for our education system and what it can do for us all.

The one-day event entitled, &amp;ldquo;Towards HIV and TB elimination in South Africa&amp;rdquo;, will bring together researchers from UCL and London School of Hygiene &amp;amp; Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) with those from the African Health Research Institute (AHRI) in South Africa. It will provide a great opportunity to find out more about the research undertaken at AHRI, and to explore the collaborative potential between these organisations.
 
The event aims to bridge cross-disciplinary boundaries and promote interaction between researchers while fostering greater collaboration between UCL, AHRI, LSHTM, and beyond. The symposium will focus on three primary fields of research relevant to AHRI&amp;rsquo;s activities: HIV, TB, and the methodology of cross-disciplinary team-based research. The event will cover a range of disciplines including population-based methodologies, laboratory science, epidemiology, the social sciences, and research ethics.
 
Speakers from all three institutions will present their innovative research and answer your questions. Attendees will also enjoy welcome speeches from Professor Michael Arthur, UCL President and Provost, Professor David Lomas, UCL Vice-Provost (Health) and Dr Jim Smith, Director of Science at Wellcome.

The Russian Embassy has hit out at what it calls the show&amp;#39;s cliches, while the author Misha Glenny has defended his portrayal of global crime rings run from the former Soviet space. This SSEES roundtable brings together experts on the place of Russia in both the perpetration and the prosecution of transnational crime to navigate these murky waters. We will look at the long history of stereotypes of the Russian international criminal, and the present-day efforts to suppress organised crime in the region. Some schools have made a name for themselves in performing &amp;lsquo;against the odds&amp;rsquo;, their pupils chalking up impressive achievements in national tests and exams. But still there remains a link between schools&amp;rsquo; circumstances and their performance, and some glaring geographical disparities. 

Breaking that link has been a focal point for education policy and many high profile organisations in education over the past two decades. There are occasional signs of progress, but they have often been modest and faltering. How far can we get with school-based interventions, and are there any such interventions, existing or hypothetical, that we should pursue with greater vigour? 

Come and debate sector leaders&amp;rsquo; views on which policies and interventions we should prioritise in order to cut through this problem once and for all, and what wider reforms would best help more schools in challenging circumstances.

Through this series we&amp;rsquo;ll be bringing together a range of commentators &amp;ndash; academics, politicians, practitioners, policy wonks &amp;ndash; and pushing them to bring some radical new thinking to some of the apparently intractable issues within education, not least the English education system. 

This can help all of us reflect on the status quo, celebrate progress but also consider how we might change things for the better to achieve commonly held goals for our education system and what it can do for us all.

There&amp;rsquo;s been a big push to get classroom practice shaped by evidence of &amp;lsquo;what works&amp;rsquo;. This has been largely inspired by advances in healthcare, where the use of research trials and national guidelines to improve patient care and outcomes is more established. 

But this approach has not gone uncontested in education (or health) and &amp;lsquo;evidence-informed practice&amp;rsquo; is still to be firmly embedded across all schools. Why is this, and do we even have a shared understanding of what we&amp;rsquo;re aiming for when it comes to teachers&amp;rsquo; engagement with and use of research?

This event will hear from leading commentators about whether, in their view, this is the correct agenda for education and, if so, what evidence-informed practice should look like and the steps needed to realise that vision across all schools.

Matt Majewski, Business Analytics (with specialisation in Computer Science) MSc (2016) and Jacob Wedderburn-Day, Economics MSc (2016) were studying at UCL when they founded CityStasher, a cheap alternative to left luggage, with their friend, Anthony Collias.

UCL Innovation and Enterprise provided them with a headquarters in central London and now they handle over 40,000 bags a year.

As part of a project called Nature Smart Cities, they&amp;rsquo;ve created a bat monitoring system in London&amp;rsquo;s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. &lt;div style="font-size: 12px; margin: 3px 0px;"&gt;&lt;span&gt;The Global Advisory Board (GAB) for Sexual Health and Wellbeing, in collaboration with the UCL Centre for Gender and Global Health and Durex&amp;trade;, are organising an interactive panel discussion on &amp;ldquo;Sexual Rights are Human Rights: What about Sexual Pleasure?&amp;rdquo; on 11 December 2017 (Monday) 17:30-19:30 at Elvin Hall, Institute of Education, UCL, in conjunction with Human Rights Day.

This event will bring together academics, human rights activists, health professionals, youth activists, private sector and other experts to discuss issues around human rights and sexual pleasure from a multi-disciplinary perspective. The discussion will focus on rights and positive sexuality in the context of sexual, gender and bodily diversity, age, disability, culture, education, religion, non-discrimination and to be free from violence. It will be an interactive discussion among the panelists and the audience.
 
The event is free and open to all but registration here is required.  The panel discussion will also be live streamed and made available to watch after the event.
