World Cancer Day is celebrated every year on 4 February. The global campaign aims to raise awareness about cancer prevention and control on a global scale.

Cancer kills more people than AIDS, malaria and TB combined and without significant improvements – preventable and curable cancers will continue to kill millions of people worldwide.

Each year, over 12.7 million people receive a cancer diagnosis and 7.6 million people die from the disease. If no action is taken, the global cancer burden is expected to reach 26 million new cases and 17 million deaths by the year 2030, with the most rapid increases occurring in low- and middle-income countries.

However, it’s not all bad news as 30 – 40 % of cancers can be prevented, and one-third of cancers can be cured through early diagnosis and treatment.

Cancer risk can be significantly reduced through simple measures:

•  Stopping tobacco use and avoiding exposure to passive smoke
• Limiting alcohol consumption
• Avoiding excessive sun exposure
• Regular physical activity
• Eating healthily
• Maintaining a healthy weight
• Protecting against cancer-causing infections

With a view to spread awareness on Children, Health and Human Rights issues among University students, the Uday Foundation invites application for the summer internship Program 2012.

The Uday Foundation is an NGO based in New Delhi, India closely working with the children afflicted with birth defects, disorders, syndromes, and various diseases that affect their health condition, education & growth. Prime focus of our NGO is to work closely on Indian public health policy, awareness and implementation of various health related projects for common citizen is India.

If you are an undergraduate, graduate or professional student or a recent graduate with your own strong interest in crucial issues of our day, the Uday Foundation Intern Program offers a unique opportunity for growth, learning and meaningful service. We are looking for people who are dependable, enthusiastic, and professional.

Interns have the responsibility of interacting directly with staff, volunteers, and Foundation stakeholders, in such activities as communications, development, and scheduling. Through firsthand experience you learn how the Uday Foundation functions on a daily basis, and assist with this process directly.

Helping to accomplish the Uday Foundation’s goal: In each intern class, we look for candidates who are diligent, resourceful, professional, and intellectually curious, as we believe these qualities in our interns reinforce and bring us closer to the Uday Foundation’s mission of meeting the challenges of health and children rights.

Our each Interns has opportunity to interact with senior administration officials, and leaders in politics, business, entertainment, and journalism discuss issues of the work of Foundation.

Preference shall be given to the following :-

Students of social and behavioral sciences, economics, communication studies and public health.

Students pursuing 5 years integrated law course.

Students pursuing 3 years L.L.B. course.

Students pursuingpost-graduation in human rights, sociology and other related social science.

Students pursuing masters in social work

Post- Graduation diploma in human rights

Students perusing graduation with specialized subjects

MBA and other post graduate degree / diploma course

Brief Summary of Internship Program

The selected Interns would get the opportunity to work in different areas of issues related to Children, Health and Human Rights, including participation in the review of Programmes of the ongoing projects in the Uday Foundation.

Interns will also get an opportunity to have interaction with legal luminaries, Senior Doctors, Social Workers, Senior Journalists of Various News Channels and New Papers as well as other reputed NGOs situated in Delhi. They will be required to study and scrutinize key result area of the Uday Foundation work, present findings to the NGO, compile and analyze statistical data on children and health related issues etc.

Interns will be required to prepare their reports on the topic of study assigned to them during the internship. Interns will also represent NGO in various programs and debates conducted by other organizations and news channels, apart from field visits and project work during internship.

The selected Interns will have to make their own arrangements regarding accommodation and transport at Delhi.

Duration of Internship : 4 to 6 weeks

Healing takes courage, and we all have courage, even if you have to dig a little.

In the otherwise gloomy atmosphere of a hospital, it was a fun-filled day for children fighting against cancer. Students from various schools and colleges gathered at AIIMS to celebrate Republic Day with children at the cancer ward.

Our Volunteers including School Students along with Students from Venkteshwara College and Kirori Mal College, distributed crayons, colour books, chocolates, biscuits and candies to children at the cancer ward. Some students also played guitar.

We held the programme for two reasons. Firstly, all students somehow celebrate Republic Day, but those in hospitals can’t do the same. We wanted them to have a feel of the day. Secondly, today is also the birthday of Subhas Chandra Bose.

The number of kids at the cancer ward was high on Monday as it was also the Outpatient Day for pediatrics cancer.

Doctors took questions from the patients and guided them on how to lead a normal life in spite of fighting cancer.

The fight against cancer is arduous, painful and depressing. The need is to nourish Cancer Affected children, emotionally through love and nurturance.

Republic Day, celebrated on January 26 every year, is one of India’s most important National event. On this day that people of India enjoyed the freedom of spirit. Its when regional identity takes a back seat and what matters the most is the universal appeal of unity and brotherhood projected .

Lets come together on this occasion to boast these little angels at AIIMS hospital , New Delhi on 23rd January 2012 , contribute to their healing process , help make them forget their worries their sufferings through interactive sessions making them ignite the spirit to fight ,be strong and that they CAN and WILL cope with illness.

Volunteers and professionals from Uday Foundation held special Christmas storytelling session and played music to entertain children suffering from heart diseases.

Every year many children and their families are forced to spend Christmas in hospital due to medical conditions of children. Your foundation is celebrating Christmas with these angels since last 4 years and this year too we celebrated Christmas with little kids admitted in Escorts Heart Institute.

We know that beyond medicine a whole lot of other things aid in a child’s healing and if they’re happy and they’re comfortable, they’re going to heal better and they’ll have a better experience.

Our volunteers take a special interest in sick children, and wanted to make sure they had all received their presents on Christmas Day. Even though they’re in hospital and not at home, giving them presents and seeing the smiles on their faces – it just makes their day and it makes our day. We know some of them are very sick, but we try to make Christmas day extra special for them.

The children’s ward in Escorts hospital beat the usual sombre look with decorations of ornamental stars, bells, baubles and ribbons in pre-Christmas celebration on Saturday.

The pediatric ward has patients few-day-old to teens. Even though the very young ones could not understand the hustle bustle around, the celebration came as a confidence-boosting measure for their parents.

“Today’s event helped me forget what we are going through for a few hours at least. It has been a tough month otherwise,” said Rachna Kumar, mother of 20-day-old Ravi who has been operated for the hole in the heart. She has come with her husband from Ludhiana a week ago.

Mohammad Akram, 12, from Karachi got a colourbook from the Santa who distributed gifts to all the children there. “I will go back with nice memories of today. I am happy to have received the colourbook,” said Akram who will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow after having been operated thrice for heart diseases.

The volunteers narrated stories which generate hope and help children understand their world better.

Pallavi Tyagi, a volunteer who passed out of school this year, has been involved in such activities for the last one year. “I aspire to be a doctor. This exercise helps me be sensitive to children. Such celebrations indeed bring smile to their faces which look tensed always,” said she. The two-hour programme also had music session in which Tushar, another volunteer, played guitar to the kids.

May it please Your Honour,

First of all we beg your indulgence for breaking legal protocols and coming here today. We however plead with Your Honour, that we are doing so, solely moved by the fact that the matter that this Honourable Court is deciding today is not only of vital importance to us as children and citizens of tomorrow, but also to the health of the Nation and the cost to the National Exchequer when this vast population will be stricken by lifestyle diseases tomorrow. And when that would happen we would have failed, because as children we had not raised our voice today when we could and should have done. We therefore beg Your Honour’s indulgence again.
We most humbly submit:

1. That we know that obesity among our peers is increasing day by day.

2. That since obesity and what follows thereafter, like inability to do physical exercises, sports, lethargy to study are killers of children’s future, because of the uncontrolled consumption of junk food and beverages made available to the kids, something drastic needs to be done to save us, children.

3. That everyone knows that the immediate cause of obesity lies in the use of Monosodium Gluconate (MSG) in the junk foods. Hundreds of studies have been made in various parts of the world and published in scientific journals directly linking serious lifestyle disorders and nervous ailments with the use of MSG by young victims.

4. That research on this issue has been done worldwide and very clear instances of loss of IQ and other learning disabilities have been found largely among children consuming junk food.

5. That the most harmful effect that is identified among the junk food using children, is a strong addiction to such food leading the user into the pit of dependence and slow death.

6. That we understand that the food production and distribution is a legitimate economic activity and is a fundamental Constitutional right of the promoter to be allowed to do it.

7. That we genuinely would like to place before this Honourable Court our big and serious unanswered question , “ does the fundamental right of an individual or a group to engage in economic activity, also endows him with a right to harm others with his product directly or indirectly? “ “Does the State have a Constitutional obligation to defend the weaker sections of its citizens like the children, who are not grown up enough to make their own proper choices of good food, for lack of adequate information and guidance?”

8. That the protection of the Rights of Children as enshrined in the Charter of Rights declared by the United Nations and was adopted by India, especially art 24, are being constantly violated and that we take the liberty to place before this Honourable Court the Art 24 of the Charter of Rights of Children: Article 24
• State/ Parties recognize the right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health and to facilities for the treatment of illness and rehabilitation of health. States/ Parties shall strive to ensure that no child is deprived of his or her right of access to such health care services.
• States/ Parties shall pursue full implementation of this right and, in particular, shall take appropriate measures:
o To combat disease and malnutrition, including within the framework of primary health care, through, inter alia, the application of readily available technology and through the provision of adequate nutritious foods and clean drinking-water, taking into consideration the dangers and risks of environmental pollution;
o To ensure that all segments of society, in particular parents and children, are informed, have access to education and are supported in the use of basic knowledge of child health and nutrition, the advantages of breastfeeding, hygiene and environmental sanitation and the prevention of accidents;
o To develop preventive health care, guidance for parents and family planning education and services.
o States/ Parties shall take all effective and appropriate measures with a view to abolishing traditional practices prejudicial to the health of children.

9. That the students are fully aware that this a war between the rich food processing companies and the State that wants their revenue on the one side and the Right of the kids who are the future of India, to live healthy lives and the Right they have for protection from predatory practices by the food companies.

10. That the State is ignoring the fact that the harm done to the health of the children today will only end up in obesity and other lifestyle diseases which will cost to the Nation many times more than the revenue that the State is earning from the peddlers of death in the name of junk which is also called ‘Junk Food’. It is not right for our Nation to be dictated by profit and revenue generation alone which happens in some western countries who follow an unmitigated capitalist model and where the State cannot intervene with pro-active policies.

11. That under the Constitution of India, Art. 15 (3) the State can make special provision for the protection of children and that the same should also be invoked to introduce such legislation or issue orders by the Honourable High Court

PRAYER
The students are determined to take up cudgels for themselves since adults, the food processing industry and the State are sitting pretty and present their petition to this Honourable High Court personally today, December 21, 2011, requesting the Honourable High Court for the favour of being made a party in the matter of the case of junk food in the schools, and /or issue instructions for protection of their rights by :

1. Broadly determining what is junk food , specially of the packaged type or served as fast food in large numbers and traditionally alien to Indian food habits.

2. Create a ban list in the order of harmful effects through a study carried out by unbiased professionals where children are a party, within a given time frame of 90 days.

3. Ban such evidently harmful foods and beverages from the canteens of the Schools or from the immediate neighborhoods of Schools.

4. Stop food companies from enticing kids by giving out toys or other such attractions that increase addiction in children for the usage of junk foods and beverages.

5. Mandate the printing of bold labels stating the existence of harmful ingredients, as decided by the experts committee, specially chemicals that although approved in some western counties as food preservatives and taste enhancers are addictive in nature and have been found to be directly linked with diseases primarily in young victims.
