Sign up in person starting at 9:15 a.m. daily at the Learning Commons, 1st Floor Library. Appointments are limited to one per day. Hours for this final week are Monday and Wednesday 9:30-7, Tuesday and Thursday 9:30-5, and Friday 9:30-2.

EAL/ESL Writing/Learning appointments are available until Thursday, April 17.

Writing in the Sciences series starts January 23

This five-part series is designed to assist undergraduate and graduate students in improving their writing for assignments and graduate theses in science programs. Students can sign up for any or all sessions.

Session 1: Correcting Errors in Grammar, Punctuation, and Mechanics
Students will learn some basic skills for writing correctly in the sciences, including identifying and correcting common grammar errors; using punctuation more effectively for clarity; and avoiding mechanical errors and inconsistencies that can cause writing to appear sloppy and inaccurate.

Session 2: Using Effective Writing Style
Students will improve their ability to recognize and revise stylistic problems in writing such as wordiness, lack of clarity, inappropriate verb tenses, and ineffective word choice.

Session 3: Using and Writing about Visuals and Sources
This session will include discussion about how to use visuals appropriately and ethically as well as how to integrate sources effectively without plagiarizing.

Two Sides to Every Thesaurus

There are times a thesaurus can really come in handy. Let’s face it, at the end of a long paper our writing tends to get a little repetitive. Certain words come up a lot, and creativity is definitely waning. It’s easy to just do a simple substitution of synonyms spit out by the Microsoft Word thesaurus, but proceed with caution! While a thesaurus can sometimes be an excellent way to expand your vocabulary and bring depth to your writing, sometimes the synonyms it generates are not exactly interchangeable. In fact, few words are. It’s a good idea to always have a dictionary around to cross-check those substitutions to ensure they make sense. Careless substitutions can turn a thoughtful, intelligent argument into an incomprehensible joke.

Take the following, for example. “The surface of the rock was cold and smooth” could become “the surface of the rock was distant and suave” with inappropriate thesaurus use, and the meaning is completely lost!

It’s important to remember that while using a thesaurus can enhance your writing to an extent, you can’t let the use of unusual or seemingly impressive words to take away from your ability to communicate effectively. After all, the purpose of writing is to communicate a message. If your writing is easily misunderstood or misinterpreted due to an overload of big fancy thesaurus-generated words, you’ve definitely missed the mark. Is replacing the word “quiet” with “mellifluous” really going to impress your reader? Probably not. There are times for synonyms, and there are times to keep it simple. Sometimes repetition is good, especially if the term is a keyword that ties your argument together throughout your paper. So use the thesaurus with caution--it can be an awesome tool, but only if you know how to use it.

Once upon a time...banana...percolate? At the Library Open House on Sept. 24, Writing Services hosted a booth called "Everybody's an Author." We invited visitors to add a sentence to help us create a riveting tale of action and intrigue.

There was just one catch: they had to draw a noun, verb, and adjective from our tickle trunk and incorporate them into the sentence.

Here's what they came up with:

Writing Services is pleased to announce the offering of Drop-in Help for students writing assignments in French. Drop-in sessions will start on Sept 25 and will be available on Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 2:00pm until 4:00pm, on the first floor of the Library. The sessions are 25 minutes long, and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up for the day's sessions begins at 9:15am.

This is a great opportunity for students registered in French courses and wanting to improve their written skills in this language. We can help you at any stage of the process. You can bring a draft, or just bring your ideas and questions. We will offer help with structuring coherent arguments; using evidence to support arguments; and understanding assignments, grammar, and academic style.

This service will be provided by Luiza Guimarães-Santos, a graduate student in French Studies at UofG. Luiza holds a master's degree in Linguistics Studies in French from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) and has three years of experience teaching French in an academic environment. She has conducted research on teaching and learning French and is now writing a thesis focused on academic writing. Luiza trained with Writing Services to address problems in academic writing and to work as a Writing Advisor.

Apply for the First Generation Student Ambassador Program by Sept. 11!

The FGS Ambassador Program is offered by the Learning Commons for first-generation students. First-generation students are students whose parents did not attend college or university.

What do ambassadors do?

Ambassadors participate in a three-hour per week program, which includes:

Academic skills training
Job-related experience
Participation in a special project (e.g., creating a video, writing a blog, or helping out with Learning Commons programming)

Why should I participate?

The program activities will help you to develop as a student and a mentor for other first-generation students. As an FGS Ambassador, you'll be part of a supportive team that inspires others to make the most of their university experience.
In recognition of your efforts, you'll receive a $300 honorarium per semester.
You'll also get access to study space in the Library and free printing and photocopying.
