Let’s face it, at the end of a long paper our writing tends to get a little repetitive. Certain words come up a lot, and creativity is definitely waning. It’s easy to just do a simple substitution of synonyms spit out by the Microsoft Word thesaurus, but proceed with caution! While a thesaurus can sometimes be an excellent way to expand your vocabulary and bring depth to your writing, sometimes the synonyms it generates are not exactly interchangeable. In fact, few words are. It’s a good idea to always have a dictionary around to cross-check those substitutions to ensure they make sense. Careless substitutions can turn a thoughtful, intelligent argument into an incomprehensible joke.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;Take the following, for example. “The surface of the rock was cold and smooth” could become “the surface of the rock was distant and suave” with inappropriate thesaurus use, and the meaning is completely lost!&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;It’s important to remember that while using a thesaurus can enhance your writing to an extent, you can’t let the use of unusual or seemingly impressive words to take away from your ability to communicate effectively. After all, the purpose of writing is to communicate a message. If your writing is easily misunderstood or misinterpreted due to an overload of big fancy thesaurus-generated words, you’ve definitely missed the mark. Is replacing the word “quiet” with “mellifluous” really going to impress your reader? Probably not. There are times for synonyms, and there are times to keep it simple. Sometimes repetition is good, especially if the term is a keyword that ties your argument together throughout your paper. Drop-in sessions will start on Sept 25 and will be available on Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 2:00pm until 4:00pm, on the first floor of the Library. The sessions are 25 minutes long, and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up for the day&#39;s sessions begins at 9:15am.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; This is a great opportunity for students registered in French courses and wanting to improve their written skills in this language. We can help you at any stage of the process. You can bring a draft, or just bring your ideas and questions. We will offer help with structuring coherent arguments; using evidence to support arguments; and understanding assignments, grammar, and academic style.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This service will be provided by Luiza Guimarães-Santos, a graduate student in French Studies at UofG. Luiza holds a master&#39;s degree in Linguistics Studies in French from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) and has three years of experience teaching French in an academic environment. She has conducted research on teaching and learning French and is now writing a thesis focused on academic writing.
