UGoEigo offers two video podcast series to help you learn English pronunciation: “English Sounds” and “Functional Phrases”. Each lesson shows a close-up of the mouth saying the target sounds and words. Watch the video and say the words. Move your mouth the same way as the video — pretend that the screen is a mirror. This will help you make the sounds and words correctly.
How can you get UGoEigo’s podcasts? If you have iTunes, the easiest way is to click the grey button and subscribe in . Each new podcast will then be downloaded. Another easy way is to use the RSS feed with your favorite newsreader. Or you can watch each episode here on the website.
Finally, read the UGoEigo blog for the latest news updates, recommendations of other ESL sites and reviews of ESL materials.

English Sounds

Each “English Sounds” podcast teaches you two different English sounds. These sounds are a little bit alike, but actually different. These video lessons help you practice saying each sound and quizes you on the differences.

English Sounds Lesson 1: B and P
English Sounds Lesson 2: F and V
English Sounds Lesson 3: B and V
English Sounds Lesson 4: Tongue-Twisters 1
English Sounds Lesson 5: F and H
English Sounds Lesson 6: H and W
English Sounds Lesson 7: H and Y
English Sounds Lesson 8: L and R
English Sounds Lesson 9: G and K

Functional Phrases

Each “Functional Phrases” podcast teaches you about five English phrases for a topic (like greetings). The lessons are short, but focus on commonly used sentences. Practicing with the video will help you improve saying full sentences.

Functional Phrases 1: Greetings
Functional Phrases 2: Doing Fine
Functional Phrases 3: Goodbye!
Functional Phrases 4: Names
Functional Phrases 5: Introductions
Functional Phrases 6: Service

I am planning a new website feature called “Please say it for me.” Is there a word or phrase that is hard for you to say? If so, send it to me. I will collect them and put video on the website for you (and everyone else). This will not be a podcast, only on the website (to make it simple for me). Also it will be my choice which phrases to post. So please email me your problem phrases!

Welcome to the ninth UGoEigo phonetics video podcast.
In this lesson we will study two new English sounds.

Then say the word with me.
Move your mouth the same way as mine.

This lesson we will practice the hard G sound.
Watch and say it with me…
Now lets try the K sound.
Watch and say it with me…
What is the same? What is different?
Your tongue is in the same place for both.
Touch the back of your tongue to the back of your mouth.
For G use your voice. For K breath out.
Watch and say with me… English G & K Sounds

In the first two “Functional Phrases” lessons you practiced greetings. This lesson you will practice what to say when you leave. There are both polite and casual things to say.

Goodbye.
Goodnight.
Farewell.
Take care.
See you tomorrow.
See you later.
See ya!

“Farewell” is very final sounding, when maybe you won’t meet again. “See ya!” is very casual and friendly.

Very many English words are the same except for ‘L’ and ‘R’. For example “light” and “right” or “lice” and “rice”. UGoEigo.com English Sounds Lesson 8: L & R
Welcome to the eighth UGoEigo phonetics video podcast.
In this lesson we will study two new English sounds.
Listen to me say each word and watch my mouth.
Then say the word along with me.
Move your mouth the same way as mine.
This lesson we will compare the L and R sounds.
These two sounds are very difficult for many people.
There are very many words that sound almost the same, one using L and one using R.
First lets try the L sound.
Watch and say it with me…
Next lets try the R sound.
Watch and say it with me…
What is different?
Where you put your tongue is different.
To make the L sound, touch your tongue to the roof of your mouth, behind your teeth…
…and use your voice.
To make the R sound, keep your tongue in the back of your mouth…
…and use your voice.
See the difference?
Touch your teeth for L, keep your tongue back for R.
Use your voice for both.
Watch and say with me…
Good job.
Now let’s try some words.
Watch and say these words with me…

“lamp” - lamp

One of the most famous audio language courses is the Pimsleur series. There are many different courses for learning many different languages. Most courses teach English speakers another language. I have used the Pimsleur lessons to learn Japanese, for example. But there are also courses for learning English as a Second Language. These lessons are very good practice for listening, speaking and responding to questions. If you listen closely to the voices on the tape you can also work on your pronunciation.

Welcome to the seventh UGoEigo phonetics video podcast.
In this podcast we will study two English sounds.
Listen to me say each word and watch my mouth.
Then say the word along with me.
Move your mouth the same way as mine.
This lesson we will compare the H and Y sounds.
You learned how to say the H’ sound in lesson 5.
Watch and say it with me…
Todays new sound is Y.
Watch and say it with me…
What is the same? What is different?
Your mouths shape is the same for H and Y.
Where you put your tongue is different, though.
To make the H sound, keep your tongue down.
To make the Y sound, raise your tongue.
See the difference?
Lower your tongue for H, raise your tongue for Y.
Both use your voice.
Watch and say with me…

Welcome to the sixth UGoEigo phonetics video podcast.
Once again, I will teach you how to say sounds in English.
Listen to me say the words and watch my mouth.
Then say the word with me.
Move your mouth the same way as mine.
This lesson we will compare the H and W sounds.
You learned how to say the H sound in lesson 5.
Watch and say it with me…
Todays new sound is W.
Watch and say with me…
What is the same? What is different?
You breath out to make both H and W.
The shape of the mouth is different, though.
To make the H sound, you open your mouth.
To make the W sound, you pucker your mouth.
See the difference?
Open your mouth for H, pucker your mouth for W.
Feel your breath come out.
Watch and say with me…

Sounds of English is a very useful website for learning how to pronounce English. It has many simple pictures showing where to put your tongue and how to shape your lips. Short audio and video clips demonstrate the sounds to you. There is also a good article on how to use stress and intonation.

Welcome to the fifth UGoEigo phonetics
video podcast.
Once again, I will
teach you how to say
sounds in English.
Listen to me say
the words and watch
my mouth.
Then say the word
with me.
Pretend that the video
is a mirror.
Move your mouth
the same way as mine.
This lesson we will compare the ‘F’ and
‘H’ sounds.
You learned how to say the ‘F’ sound in lesson 2.
Watch and say with me…
Today’s new sound is ‘H’.
Watch and say with me…
What is different?
To make the ‘F’ sound,
put your upper teeth
on your lower lip…
…and then blow out.
To make the ‘H’ sound, first open your mouth.
Then, use your throat to breath out.
See the difference?
Open your mouth and use your voice to make ‘H’.
Feel your breath
come out.
Watch and say with me…
Good.
Now let’s try some words.
Watch and say these
words with me…

“fat” - fat
“felt” - felt
“fit” - fit
“fog” - fog

“hoof” - hoof
“feh” - feh

Now listen.

How did you do?
Now let’s practice.
Watch and say these
words with me…

“fat” - fat
“hat” - hat
“feel” - feel

What web browser do you use? If you use Firefox there are many very useful add-ons. One that will help you pronounce words is the Pronounce Add-On. It works on Windows and Mac OSX. If you double-click on a word on a web page and then click the speaker icon you will hear the word. Click on the picture for an example. I double-clicked on the word “lesson”. Then I clicked on the speaker icon. Then my computer said the word “lesson”. The add-on may not know some words, but perhaps it will be useful to you…

Phonetics: The Sounds of Spoken Language is a website by the University of Iowa in the United States. It shows how to pronounce English, Spanish and German words. If my video lessons are useful to you, this site might also help you learn English phonics. It uses flash animation to show you how to move your mouth for each sound. It uses technical words, so it may be a little hard for some people. But there are lots of pictures, sounds and animations to help you understand.

This lesson we will practice all the sounds you have learned so far. To speak well, you must be able to speak quickly and smoothly. So we will practice “tongue-twisters”. Don’t worry if they’re hard. They are hard for native speakers too. Just say them as fast as you can.
The transcript for this lesson is here.

Welcome to the fourth UGoEigo phonetics video podcast.
You have learned four English sounds: B, P, F & V
This time we will try to say these sounds faster!
We will practice tongue-twisters.
Listen to me say the words and watch my mouth.
Move your mouth the same way.
Then say the word with me.
Try to say the words quickly, but clearly.
The first one practices the B sound…
Rubber baby buggy bumpers,
Rubber baby buggy bumpers,
Rubber baby buggy bumpers.
Watch and say it with me…
Next, lets practice the V sound.
Vern Verve is well versed in very wordy verb verse.
Watch and say it with me…
Now lets try a harder one.
This one uses the F sound.

Of all the felt I ever felt, I never felt a piece of felt
…which felt as fine as that felt felt,…
…when first I felt that felt hat’s felt.

Watch and say it with me…
This last one is hard, even for English speakers.
It has many, many P sounds.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers…
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,…
Wheres the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

Ready? Watch and say it with me…
Fantastic!
Well, that is the end of this lesson…
Keep practicing and youll be able to speak quickly.
Please visit the web site & try the next one.

Welcome to the second UGoEigo phonetics
video podcast.
Again, I will teach
you how to say
sounds in English.
Listen to me say
the words and watch
my mouth.
Then say the word
with me.
Pretend that the video
is a mirror.
Move your mouth
the same way as mine.
This lesson we will
do two more sounds.
As before, they are a little bit alike.
First is the sound
of the letter ‘F’.
Watch and say with me…
Second is the sound
of the letter ‘V’.
Watch and say with me…
What is the same?
What is different?
Both ‘F’ and ‘V’
start the same.
Put your upper teeth on your lower lip.
To make the ‘F’ sound, blow out.
To make the ‘V’ sound,
you DONT blow out.
Instead, use your voice. Feel your throat vibrate.
Watch and say with me…
Feel the difference?
When you say ‘F’,
blow out.
When you say ‘V’,
use your voice.
Now let’s try some words.
Watch and say these
words with me…

“fan” - fan
“muffler” - muffler
“surf” - surf
“fifty” - fifty
“van” - van
“level” - level
“five” - five
“vivacious” - vivacious

Now listen.
Which word do you hear?
How did you do?
Now let’s practice.
Watch and say these
words with me…

“fan”- fan
“van” - van
“ferry” - ferry
“very” - very
“leaf” - leaf
“leave” - leave
“safe” - safe
“save” - save
“fine” - fine
“vine” - vine
“few” - few
“view” - view
“fee” - fee
“V” - V

Excellent.
Well, that is the end
of this lesson…
I hope it helped you.
Please visit the web site & try the next one.

Transcript
Welcome to the third UGoEigo phonetics
video podcast.
Once again, I will
teach you how to make
sounds in English.
Listen to me say
the words and watch
my mouth.
Move your mouth
the same way.
Then say the word
with me.
In Lesson 1, you learned to make the B sound.
In Lesson 2, you learned to make the V sound.
B and V also sound a lot alike to many students.
So this lesson will compare B and V.
Remember we dont blow out to make the B or V.
We use our voice
to make B and V.
Watch and say with me…

“banana” - banana
“tab” - tab
“number” - number
“rubber” - rubber
“view” - view
“rev” - rev
“river” - river
“vibe” - vibe

What is different?
The B sound starts with your lips closed.
The V sound starts with your upper teeth touching your lower lip.
See the difference?
B is lip-to-lip.
V is teeth-to-lip.
Both use your voice.
Feel your throat vibrate.
Now let’s try some words.
Watch and say these
words with me…
Now listen.
Which word do you hear?
How did you do?
Now let’s practice.
Watch and say these
words with me…

“ban” - ban
“van” - van
“berry” - berry
“very” - very
“base” - base
“vase” - vase
“bet” - bet
“vet” - vet
“buy” - buy
“vie” - vie
“best” - best
“vest” - vest
“T.B.” - T.B.
“T.V.” - T.V.

Excellent.
Well, that is the end
of this lesson…
I hope it was helpful.
Please visit the web site and try the next one.

Hello and welcome to UGoEigo.com’s website. I hope I can help improve your English with my podcasts and other lessons. My goal is to provide you with three podcast a week, along with other content. First I will be making a series of video podcasts to teach basic English pronunciation. These videos will feature close-ups of my mouth as I say the words and sounds being taught. You should try to say the words with me, mimicking my mouth movements. The video podcasts will be in two formats, one for the Apple iPod (and computers using Quicktime) and the Sony PSP. Please let me know if they are helpful.

Who am I? - I am Tad Morgan, an American who is teaching English in elementary schools and junior high schools in rural Japan.
Why have you made UGoEigo? - While teaching in Japan, I have learned a lot about the problems of teaching and learning a language. I have also come to realize that many Japanese know some English, but lack confidence in their ability to use what they know. This is especially the case with speaking. The Japanese education system has usually put very little emphasis on the speaking component of language learning. As a result, most people do not have the practice required to gain confidence. I have developed a few ideas on how to fix this that I would like to share.
What will UGoEigo feature? - I am hoping to help visitors improve their English pronunciation using video ESL podcasts illustrating how to pronounce and speak English. I have noticed that many errors in pronunciation are the result of incorrect mouth positioning (tongue, lips, etc. in the wrong place). With close-up video and other instruction I hope each ESL podcast will help learners improve their pronunciation. This improvement will hopefully increase confidence and may even help improve listening abilities as they become more aware of the sounds of English.
Why “UGoEigo”? - “You Go!” is a colloquial phrase of encouragement, as in “You go, girl!” “Eigo” is the Japanese word for “English” (). Since my experience is teaching Japanese speakers, that is the focus here. But the material should be useful to anyone learning English. Put them together and change “You” to “U” and you get “UGoEigo”. Also the word “Go” reflects that the teaching materials here (such as these ESL podcasts) are designed to be used on-the-go with your iPod or PSP.
