Various products have been used in western North Dakota to try and overcome the dust problem encountered by the tremendous increase in traffic. The following link provides information on various products that have been used so far. As more information is obtained the chart will be updated. The information is provided by the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) in conjunction with the North Dakota Local Technical Assistance Program (NDLTAP) and the North Dakota Association of Oil and Gas Producing Counties (NDAOGPC). The information provided does not in any way imply endorsement of any of the products or services by NDDOT, NDLTAP, or NDAOGPC.

International studies and political science student Sarah Mayo was awarded first place by the Western Social Science Association for her undergraduate research paper. In an interview with NDSU's University Relations, she says, "My experiences in conducting research, and also working as a teaching assistant last semester to Dr. Jarret Brachman's political science class on the subject of terrorism, have led me to my aspirations of eventually becoming a professor." Brachman is an associate research fellow at UGPTI.

Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless, flammable, extremely hazardous gas with a "rotten egg" smell. It occurs naturally in crude petroleum and natural gas, and can be produced by the breakdown of organic matter and human/ animal wastes (e.g., sewage). It is heavier than air and can collect in low-lying and enclosed, poorly ventilated areas such as basements, manholes, sewer lines and underground telephone/electrical vaults.

"Impacts of ethanol plants on highway networks" has been published in the spring issue of the Journal of Transport and Land Use. The paper was written by Subhro Mitra, formerly of the UGPTI and now at the University of North Texas at Dallas; Alan Dybing of UGPTI; and Denver Tolliver of UGPTI. The paper describes the impacts of the ethanol industry on existing highway infrastructure in the vicinity of an ethanol production plant. Based on existing pavement condition and the incremental traffic changes, the funds required to maintain the affected roads at their present service levels are quantified.

DOTSC Celebrates Its 10-year Anniversary

The NDDOT Support Center (DOTSC) at North Dakota State University will celebrate its 10th anniversary with an open house on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lower level of Hastings Hall on the NDSU campus. NDDOT, UGPTI and NDSU officials as well as staff and students will be on hand to celebrate. DOT Director Francis Ziegler and NDSU President Dean Bresciani will be present to sign an updated partnership statement. The formal agreement that created DOTSC was a key step in providing students with critical experience for future careers in transportation and for developing expertise and knowledge important to mobility in the region.

Content was compiled in cooperation with the ND Highway Patrol, ND Corn Council, ND Soybean Council, and the ND Wheat Commission.

2010 Scholarship Applications

The Paul Abrahamson and Transportation Engineering Scholarships are being offered to NDSU students through the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute. These scholarships are offered annually, and are funded by the Mountain-Plains Consortium. Interested students should be juniors and seniors interested in transportation and who exhibit academic excellence. Two students will be selected for each scholarship worth $1500 per academic year.

The scholarship application deadline is quickly approaching. Applications are due Mar. 24, 2010.
