On February 21st, the Vatican announced Pope Benedict XVI had named Monsignor George A. Sheltz to be the next Auxiliary Bishop of Galveston-Houston.

The first set of Masses of Thanksgiving to be celebrated by Bishop-Elect George A. Sheltz have been confirmed for this spring. The public is welcome to attend the following Masses with Bishop-Elect Sheltz at these Parishes where he served as Pastor: Tuesday, May 15th 7:00 PM Prince of Peace Church 19222 Tomball Parkway Houston; Thursday, May 24th 7:00 PM St. Anthony of Padua Church 7801 Bay Branch Drive Woodlands; Tuesday, May 29th 7:00 PM Christ the Redeemer Church11507 Huffmeister Road Houston. In addition, the public is welcome to attend his Masses of Thanksgiving on: Monday, June 4th 7:00 PM Annunciation Church 1618 Texas Avenue Houston, where he was ordained to the Priesthood over 40 years ago; and Tuesday, June 5th 7:00 PM Holy Family Parish 34th and Avenue K Galveston.

Ash Wednesday this year is on February 22nd. This day marks the beginning of the Lenten season. The imposition of ashes is an ancient penitential practice symbolizing our dependence upon God's mercy and forgiveness. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence in the Catholic Church. The following is the schedule of Masses with distribution of ashes at the A D Bruce Religion Center in the Main Chapel: 7:00 AM, 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Use UH entrance # 13 to get to the A D Bruce Religion Center.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a Holy Day of Obligation. Because this is the patronal feast day of the United States the obligation to attend Mass is maintained. On Thursday, December 8th Mass will be celebrated at the A D Bruce Religion Center at 12 NOON in the Main Chapel.
