As the members of the Class of 2018 countdown the remaining days of school until Graduation Day on June 5, the UHS family will spend this month celebrating our Seniors through various events. This is certainly a time of excitement and joy, coupled with moments of reflection and nostalgia about the countless memories that our students, and their respective families, have spent “growing up” together as members of the UCFSD family.

Keystone Examinations: May 22- May 25

The Keystone Exams will be administered to students on Tuesday, May 22nd and Wednesday, May 23rd, with make-ups taking place May 24th and 25th. Letters with schedules and specific details will be sent home to parents via email the week of May 14th, and Mr. Silva will visit classes subject to testing that week as well. If you have any questions once letters are sent home, feel free to contact Mr. Silva.

UHS Prom and After-Prom Party

The Junior/Senior Prom will be held on Saturday, May 19, at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Downtown Wilmington, DE at 700 N. King Street (Legal District). Students will participate in a breathalyzer screening on the way into and out of the dance. A special thank you to Mr. Pat Clark and Mr. Joe Kilpatrick, our 11th and 12th grade class advisors, for organizing Saturday’s Prom.

After the Prom has concluded, the UHS PTO will be hosting an After-Prom Party on Saturday, May 19, at UHS. Students may sign-in that night between 11:00 p.m. and midnight. Students may not arrive after midnight, and may choose to have a parent pick them up at 3:00 a.m. or leave at 5:00 a.m., Sunday, May 20. All junior and senior students are invited to attend the party even if they do not attend The Prom. No fee will be charged to enter the After-Prom. There will be a community walk-through to tour the amazing After-Prom decor on Saturday, May 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Please see the attached After-Prom Registration Form.

The Senior Stroll and Senior Picnic

On Thursday, May 24, our Members of the Class of 2018 will be participating in the “Senior Stroll.” Students need to arrive to school by 8:30 a.m. to receive their caps and gowns. Students will load a bus which will take them back to their grade school for a stroll through the hallways in their Commencement cap and gown. Following the visit to their respective elementary schools, students will stroll through the hallways of Charles F. Patton Middle School. Each of the school principals and staffs are so excited to see our members of the Class of 2018 again, and they have big plans for their visit. Upon return to UHS, we will have our Senior Picnic and distribute yearbooks to the members of the Class of 2018.

Senior Awards Night

A program to recognize outstanding achievement by members of the Class of 2018 will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, in the high school auditorium. This event is a time when our respective Academic departments and our external Community Partners present awards and scholarships. Parents of seniors being honored have received a written invitation to attend the program.

*3rd Marking Period Grade Reminder: The 3rd marking period concludes on April 3rd, and grades will be available to families on April 20th by the end of the day.

Welcome Mr. Steve Silva to the UHS Family!

It is with great pleasure that I can introduce Mr. Steve Silva to you as our next Assistant Principal at Unionville High School. The assistant principal interview process was a long and arduous one, including three rounds of interviews, writing samples, and live presentations. The team of evaluators included: administrators, teachers, staff and Board members. In the end, Steve was selected from among over 100 applicants for the position.Steve is a veteran educator with 22 years of experience at Penncrest High School. For the past three years he has served as Assistant Principal. Steve has worked in various teaching and administrative capacities while at Penncrest. Steve will be picking up all of Rudy Reif’s administrative and supervisory responsibilities, as well as working very closely with the members of the Class of 2019 and 2021. Steve received his undergraduate degrees from Scranton University in History and Education, he completed his Master’s degree in History at West Chester University, and completed his Principal Certification Program at Immaculata University. Steve’s first day at UHS will be on March 26.

MLK Canned Food Drive March 12-March 23

In the past, we have coupled our “MLK Day of Sharing” with our Canned Food Drive. This year, we moved our Canned Food Drive to the Spring. The 9th grade class and Social Studies Department will be spearheading our MLK Canned Food Drive this year. All canned goods will be delivered directly to the Kennett Food Cupboard. Last year, our MLK Canned Food Drive concluded at the Kennett Food Cupboard where we were able to provide the Food Cupboard with over 12,000 lbs of food to help feed members of our community. Please consider donating canned food items this week. If you are interested in helping to organize the canned goods on Friday, March 23, please report to the UHS Cafeteria following dismissal.

MORP is back!--- Friday, March 23 from 7:30-10 p.m

Student Council is reviving an old favorite and will once again be hosting the MORP dance (PROM spelled backwards) this year. This electronic/techno themed dance will be held on Friday evening March 23 from 7:30-10 p.m. All are welcome!

College Planning Night for All Families in Grades 9-11: Thurs. February 22

On February 22 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. the UHS Counseling Center will be hosting “College Planning Night for All Families.” The evening will consist of break-out sessions with college representatives from various colleges/universities speaking on a variety of topics relating to the college admissions process. Interested families should arrive at UHS by 6:45 p.m. A list of topics and presenters will be available on the UHS Counseling Center website prior to the event.

The PTO/UHS Used Book Sale is HERE--Friday, Feb. 23 & Saturday, Feb. 24

The annual UHS Book Sale is only a few days away! The UHS Book Sale will take place on Friday, February 23 from 4:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m, and on Saturday, February 24 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Unionville High School presents: The King and I: March 15-17

This year, the talents and gifts of our UHS players will be on display as they perform The King & I on Thursday, March 15, Friday, March 16, and Saturday, March 17 at 7:00 pm each night. This show features a cast of over 80 students, from 2nd grade through 12 grade with students from all six UCFSD schools.

The King and I is the fifth musical by the team of composer Richard Rodgers and dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II. It is based on Margaret Landon's novel, Anna and the King of Siam(1944), which is in turn derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The musical's plot relates the experiences of Anna, a British school teacher hired as part of the King's drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the King and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the piece, as well as by a love to which neither can admit.

Good afternoon parents,

Happy New Year! Now that the holiday season is in our rearview mirror, many of our New Year’s resolutions hang on the precipice of becoming substantial life changes...HANG IN THERE! Over the next two weeks, our UHS community will be a sea of Eagles green awaiting the huge Super Bowl game on February 4th. This will be a time of good feelings, excitement, and anticipation leading up to the big game (hopefully, even for our friends who root for other teams). Good luck to our E-A-G-L-E-S as they travel to Minnesota “on the road to victory!”

This morning we will begin the start of a new semester at Unionville High School. Please note that grades will be made available to parents on the PowerSchool portal on Monday, February 5 in the afternoon.

UHS Course Selection Evening: Thursday, February 15 from 7:00-9:00

Please join us for the annual UHS Course Selection Evening which will be held on Thursday, February 15 from 7:00-9:00 in the UHS Auditorium. Representatives from each of the UHS Departments will be in attendance to answer any of your questions and/or concerns about your child’s courses for the 2018-19 school year.

Good afternoon parents,

With Winter Break only a few short days away, a buzzing excitement fills the air throughout

the hallways of Unionville High School. While last minute shopping trips and endless present

wrapping will consume our time over the next few days, I wanted to pause and take this

opportunity to offer my personal wishes of Seasons Greetings and hopes that you and your

family have a happy and healthy New Year! In whatever way that your family celebrates this

time away from school, I hope that it provides all members of the UHS family with countless

opportunities for memory making that are filled with laughter and fun.

Hardin-Jefferson Holiday Hope Drive

Our Hardin-Jefferson School District fundraising effort will continue throughout the holiday

season. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for Hardin-Jefferson prior to leaving for Winter Break.

If we can reach this goal, the students will receive a special prize in the springtime.

We are accepting checks, cash donations, and/or gift cards from the following outlets:

Lowe's, Home Depot, Target, Wal-Mart, Bed Bath and Beyond, Ace Hardware, JC Penney,

or Amazon. All donations should be brought to the Main Office and placed in the H-J Mailbox.

If you would like to make a donation , please bring it to the UHS Main Office, and you can

place it in our UHS/H-J Mailbox. All checks are made payable to “Hardin-Jefferson ISD”

with the memo line “Hurricane Relief.” Please consider sharing kindness during the holiday

Listen to the “Sounds of the Season”: 12/12 and 12/19

Join us this Tuesday evening (12/12), and next Tuesday evening (12/19) at 7:00 pm to hear

our Unionville High School music students perform selections of holiday music. Our

Instrumental musicians will be performing tomorrow evening (12/12), and the Vocal

musicians will be performing next Tuesday evening (12/19). Please join us for two evenings

of beautiful seasonal music.

UHS Attendance Reminders

As a reminder, next week at UHS we are on a full-day schedule from Monday to Friday. If

your student will be absent or leaving early on any of these days, normal attendance

procedures apply. Please be sure to review the “Early Dismissal Guidelines,” the “Absence

Guidelines,” and the “Extended Absence Guidelines” in the UHS Student Handbook which

can be accessed from the UHS website.

Reminder of Early Dismissal Procedures for Students

If an early dismissal is needed (for a doctor’s appointment, etc.), students must bring in a

parent note to the Main Office at the start of that day. *Please remember that we will not

phone into a classroom and disturb instruction for an early dismissal.

UHS Mid-Term Exam Schedule: Jan. 16, Jan. 17, Jan. 18, and Jan. 19

Weather permitting, will be have two full-days of school on Tuesday, January 16 and

Wednesday, January 17, and two half-days of school on Thursday, January 18 and Friday,

January 19.

During the January 18 and January 19 examination days, students will be released from UHS

at 11:10am. Parents may elect to pick up their student(s) or their student(s) may remain in a

study hall until 2:43 pm if we receive a parental note indicating the student is staying in the

study hall. Busses will run at 2:43 pm

UHS Early Dismissal Reminders

As a reminder, ALL early dismissal requests must be written, signed by a parent or guardian,

and submitted to the Attendance counter in the Main Office by the end of homeroom or when

a student arrives to school if the homeroom period has passed. Additionally, we will not be able

to interrupt classroom instruction to call students to the Main Office for an early dismissal.

Good afternoon parents,

Now that Halloween has passed (although much of that dreaded Halloween candy still lingers), and as Thanksgiving rapidly approaches, I wanted to share my personal wishes of thanks to all UHS families and students. Your children come to our high school each morning with a positive attitude toward learning, with a kind word and a smile for each staff member, and with a goodness of heart that refreshes and renews our building each day. For all of those things, our UHS Family gives thanks each day.

Fall Production: Hamlet (November 9-10-11 @ 7:00)

“To be or not to be…”

Next Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening (November 9, 10, 11), The UHS Players present William Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet. This student-driven production includes original music composed and performed by Eric Folmar and costumes designed by Dakota Kilgariff. The music is performed live with Eli Sheppard on electric guitar, Calvin Collison on electric bass, and Eric Folmar on drum set. Stage managers Victoria Vaughn and Jack Landolt designed and built the set. Jonathan Chidekel designed the lighting and Max Baines and Matt Weigard created the sound effects.

Following the successful production of Antigone last year, the UHS Players challenged themselves with their production of Hamlet. One twist from the original Shakespearean performances, where males played female parts, you will see Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern being portrayed by females: Suchi Jain, Grace Willey and Emily Lewis, respectively.

Curtain is at 7:00 pm each evening. Tickets are available in the Main Office and at the door. Adults $7, students $5.

UHS Art Gala: Friday, November 17 & Saturday, November 18

Please join us for the 42nd Annual Unionville High School Art Gala which will be held on Friday, November 17 & Saturday, November 18. This annual event showcases local celebrated working artists, UHS Alumni, and current UHS Students along with live music and great food! We are proud to announce Maryann Weselyk as this year’s featured artist. Mark your calendars for this wonderful event!

This year’s Homecoming Spirit Week festivities are underway at Unionville High School. Today, for Day #1 of Spirit Week, the halls are filled with Sports jerseys from various teams. Tomorrow, students and staff will be dressing up as our Favorite Movie Characters. On Wednesday, we will be imitating “Parents Through the Ages.” (I will be dressed as my Dad on Wednesday, sporting his signature mustache and Villanova shirt). On Thursday, everyone at UHS will be donning their Blue and Gold UHS Spiritwear, and on Friday, the students will wear their respective class colors in preparation for Friday afternoon’s 3rd Annual Lip-Dub and our Homecoming Pep Rally. We hope that you can “Catch the Spirit” of UHS Spirit Week with your child this week.

UCFSD Focus on STEM Night: Wednesday, October 4 (6:30-8:30)

Join us on Wednesday evening, October 4, for our UHS STEM Night. This event, open to all CFPMS and UHS students and their families, will discuss careers in STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) from professionals working in STEM-related fields. There will also be a number of demonstrations of STEM in action at UHS! Please join us for an informative evening about innovation at UHS!

UCFSD Flu Clinic & Unused: October 5 (2:30-6:30)

Stopping the Flu Starts with You

School season is prime time for classes, homework, sports… and the flu. With the flu virus most active from October to May, getting vaccinated is the #1 way to prevent the flu and the fever, sore throat, body aches, and even serious health complications it can cause. We are partnering with the Chester County Health Department to offer a flu shot clinic to community members.

When: Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 3:00 PM until 6:30 PM

Where: Unionville High School Cafeteria

For more information, visit www.chesco.org/health/flu. Same day, onsite registration only. If you have health insurance, bring your cards. All insurance types, including medical assistance, are welcome.

Homecoming Dance: Saturday, October 7 (7:00-10:00)

Our annual Homecoming Dance will be held this Saturday evening from 7:00-10:00. The Homecoming dance is a semi-formal event, so we ask that students dress accordingly. Students will need to bring their UHS school issued ID in order to gain entrance to the dance. An important reminder to parents and students is that we will breathalyze each student as he/she comes into the dance. This is a precautionary measure that we take prior to any school dance where UHS students are in attendance.

PSAT Day: Wednesday, October 11

On October 11, we will be giving the PSAT/NMSQT test to all 10th and 11th grade students. There will be an altered schedule for our students in grades 10, 11, and 12 that morning; our 9th grade students will follow a normal schedule of classes that day. More specific details of that day will be sent out next week.

Picture Day Re-Takes: Thursday, October 26

Picture Day Re-Takes will be held next Thursday, October 26 in the Cafeteria LGI. Students wishing to have a picture re-take should report to the Cafeteria LGI during Study Halls or during their lunch periods.

UHS Halloween Celebration: Wednesday, October 31st

Halloween festivities will UHS on Wednesday, October 31st. If your child would like to participate in the fun spirit of the day, we ask that he/she follows the following guidelines to promote a fun and safe day:

Students will not be allowed to wear masks or face covering of any kind (including facepaint). This is important because we need to be able to identify each student during the school day
Student are not permitted to bring weapons of any kind into the building
Students are not permitted to portray violent, bloody and/or excessively gory costumes

Good afternoon parents,

Happy New Year and welcome to the 2017-18 School Year! Last week was a fantastic first week of school with the building once again abuzz with the sounds of students and staff working together. This year, our school theme will be examining “The UHS Mindset,” and the impact that kindness should play in all interactions both in school, and in our community. Our UHS family realizes that your children are more than statistical data points, but kind, hard-working, and dedicated young people.

Hardin-Jefferson ISD: Our Partner School District in Texas

As we focus our school year on kindness, Unionville High School has partnered with the Hardin-Jefferson School District in Sour Lake, Texas. The Sour Lake Community was hit extremely hard by Hurricane Harvey. We will have a series of fundraising opportunities for our community, throughout the school year, in order to provide our extended family in Sour Lake with whatever support that they will need. The upcoming months will be difficult for the Sour Lake community, but I know that the kindness and generosity of our UCFSD families will be felt by the Hardin-Jefferson families.

Our UHS family is thrilled to kick-off our fundraising efforts this Friday (9/8), as our football team hosts Avon Grove High School at 7:00 pm. We are excited that Avon Grove will also be joining us in our fundraising efforts this Friday. The Hemmert family (our connection with the Hardin-Jefferson ISD) were long-time Avon Grove residents .

At this time, we are accepting checks made payable to “UCFSD”, memo line Hardin-Jefferson Independent SD, cash donations, and/or gift cards from the following outlets: Lowe's, Home Depot, Target, Wal-Mart, Bed Bath and Beyond, Ace Hardware, JC Penney, or Amazon. We will have a collection table setup near the the ticket booth on Friday evening, so please be sure to stop by! Thank you for your kindness and generosity, and we hope you are able to join us for Friday evening's wonderful event!

Hardin-Jefferson/UHS Volunteer Organizational Meeting: September 20

How can you help in our efforts to support our extended family in Sour Lake, TX? On the evening of September 20th from 6:00-7:00 pm, we will hold an organizational meeting to discuss fundraising ideas/plans for the current school year. If you would like to attend or just learn more about our efforts for the Hardin-Jefferson SD, please plan to meet in the UHS LGI.

Back-to-School Night: September 14

Our annual Back-to-School Night will be held on September 14 at 7:00. Back-to-School Night is a wonderful opportunity to connect families with our staff, and to learn about all of the events taking place in the classroom. We hope that you able to attend this informative evening.

The Unionville High School Student Disciplinary Policy and Student/Parent Handbook

The Unionville High School Student Disciplinary Policy and Student/Parent Handbook are available on-line via the UHS website. The Handbook includes important information for both students and parents about the policies and procedures in effect at the high school. Please take time to review the contents of these publications with your student(s), especially the sections dealing with Bullying, Academic Honesty, and the Dress Code Policy.

Absence from School

If your child is absent from school, please be sure to call the UHS Main Office to inform us of the absence. *Within THREE days of your child returning to school, we must receive a signed note or parent email to excuse the absence. If a note or email is not received within three days, your child’s absence will be unexcused.

Early Dismissals for Students

A student who needs an early dismissal on a particular day (for a doctor’s appointment, etc.) must bring a note to the Main Office at the start of the day for which the early dismissal is needed. *Please remember that we will not phone into a classroom and disturb instruction for an early dismissal. Students may check emails on a cell phone during passing times but may not use a cell phone during the school day to make phone calls. If he/she needs to make an emergency call, any student may come to the Main Office to access a phone.

September 20: Picture Day

Picture Day will be held next Wednesday, September 20 in the UHS Library. Your child was given the picture form in his/her homeroom yesterday morning. If you are ordering pictures, please put the payment in the photo envelope and have your child return the envelope on picture day.

Class Dues

Please remember that class dues, which are used to pay for the Senior Dinner Dance and cap & gowns, may be paid in the High School Main Office. The class dues are: 9th - $30; 10th - $25; 11th - $20; 12th - $15.
