I was surprised that it would be Texas but … this is Ann’s story from Wednesday’s paper. Hagin’s departure buried at the bottom.

Dave Shoji isn’t messing around with his 2013 volleyball schedule. At Monday’s Rainbow Wahine banquet, he dropped the news to his team that Hawaii would open Aug. 30 against NCAA champion Texas.

The schedule is not finalized, but Shoji said he is “99 percent sure” UH will open against the Longhorns, who swept Oregon last month to capture their third national title, but first since they defeated Hawaii in the 1988 NCAA final.

Both Hawaii (Emily Maeda) and Texas (Sha’Dare McNeal) lost just one senior. The Wahine could return eight seniors, including first-team All-American Emily Hartong. The Longhorns will have four, including Bailey Webster — the final four’s most outstanding player — and Hawaii Baptist Academy graduate Sarah Palmer.

Shoji has 25 dates scheduled and hopes to reach the NCAA maximum of 28. UCLA, San Diego, Arizona, Northwestern and New Mexico State will also be here.

Tickets will go on sale soon for a March 15 exhibition against Texas Tech at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Red Raiders lost two seniors off last year’s 14-18 team.

The second sand volleyball season could start that same day. Coach Scott Wong hopes to announce his schedule soon. He already has a roster and it looks little like last year. There are 11 full-time sand players — eight more than the inaugural season. All but two are transfers. Ten indoor players fill the roster.

The best of the transfers may be Brittany Tiegs, who helped Florida State finish third at the inaugural AVCA National Championships. Tiegs was named to the first Sand Volleyball All-America team, along with Hawaii’s Jane Croson. Tiegs did not receive her release from FSU and will redshirt this season.

The other new players are eligible, including Hawaii Pacific transfers Natasha Bell and Ku‘ulei Zalopany, and Karlee Riggs. She was named the Orange Empire Conference Most Valuable Player last month for her sophomore indoor season at Orange Coast College.

Arizona announced last week that it would add a sand team, joining Pac-12 programs Cal, Stanford, UCLA and USC. Nebraska became the first Big Ten sand team. There will be 29 programs competing this year, nearly double last year. Another 47 are considering adding the sport in 2014, according to Arizona officials.

A sport achieves NCAA status after 40 teams have competed two consecutive seasons. Pepperdine won the first national championship, beating Long Beach State last spring.

The UH sand team is in its third week of practice. The Hawaii indoor team is in the midst of individual workouts without Stephanie Hagins, a 6-foot-4 reserve middle. She left school after transferring to UH from Washington State last year. Spring team practice starts next month.

Have always enjoyed chatting with Manny during the alumni matches.

From UH:

In conjunction with 3rd Annual A‘o a Koa Scholarship Dinner that supports the University of Hawaii Warrior Volleyball program, Emmanual “Manny” Relator will receive the Pae Makaukau Alumni recognition award. The dinner will be held, Jan. 30, at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Relator was a member of the inaugural men’s volleyball team in 1958. The award is given annually to recognize former Warriors who have contributed to the well-being of others; is actively involved in activities which promotes others to improve themselves; and have conducted themselves in a way in which young people can learn positive life lessons.

A 1951 Kahuku High School graduate, Relator enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served for four years while stationed in Japan and California. He then attended UH and joined volleyball team, coached by Jerry Bruhn. With Relator playing setter, the Rainbows would finish unbeaten in the Armed Services YMCA Class B League championship and took fifth place in the prestigious Senior Volleyball League in their first year.

After three years, Relator left school to start a family and begin a four-decade career as a designer-draftsman, many of those years with Chevron. He remained active in the volleyball community coaching Maryknoll, Campbell and Leilehua high schools.

Relator enjoys retirement with his wife, Sofia, two children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He golfs regularly and attends UH sporting events.

Relator will be honored during the scholarship dinner, which in its third-year is a fun-filled opportunity to meet head coach Charlie Wade and his staff and the current Warrior volleyball team.

thank you for the link. Just catching up on a few things.

First, appreciate all the kind thoughts regarding my mom. She is getting better but still has a long road to travel back to wellness. The nice thing is my sister-in-law has been an angel for the past few months and mom has been in good hands in the rehab facility.

Now about the commit. Kalei Greeley’s club … Rancho Valley, has posted that she has committed to UH for Fall 2014. She was the CIF Div 2AA Player of the Year as a junior at King High in Riverside.

RVVC is in San Bernardino.

She is a 6-3-ish middle turned opposite. very athletic from what I’ve read.

In the state final in November she led the team to the championship with 29 kills and 23 digs in the final.

not sure of the Hawaii connection with her name. perhaps someone knows. Her folks played Basketball at UC Riverside (dad both at UCR and USC).

As for some of the comments on the other thread.

UH is young, most of the players have never played at BYU. Ramos may have played in Smith with UOP, Not sure if Olsen, the transfer from Penn State has but when you look at the rest of the starting lineup, Wechsung and Etim Thomas are JC transfers, Zarkovic and Kanetake are freshmen, West and Marks never been to Provo,

BYU is No. 2 for a reason, actually thought they’d be No. 1. Provo is very tough to play at, cold and altitude. very hard place to serve.
