What Is Undue Hesitation?

Many driving test candidates in the UK fail the practical car assessment because they do not understand what the DSA classifies as un-due hesitation!

The common belief is that if you wait too long at a junction, then you will fail. This is not true, which is why I have made the video below to explain to you what this fault is, and why you should not rush at a junction and commit a serious error due to lack of knowledge.

It takes practice and experience to pass the UK driving test, so take your time and drive safely!

Driving Test Sudden Direction Changes

Roundabout Videos (Mini and Major)

Here are 2 Driving School Videos that should help you as an inexperienced learner deal with roundabouts while preparing for the UK driving test.

The first video should help provisional licence holders with UK mini-roundabouts, particularly being able to find gaps when there are many cars approaching from the right and thus avoid the common fault of undue hesitation.

The second driving lesson video covers mult-lane roundabouts, and uses the famous apex corner that is on the Mill Hill and Hendon Aviation Square driving test route.

How To Deal with Multi-Lane Roundabouts on a Dual Carriage

For the benefit of a few people who have made comments about some lane changes in the video, the driving instructor was following the road markings, and those of you familiar with these roundabouts will know why many provisional licence holders visiting this area for the first time on their driving test have problems.

Learner Drivers And Motorways

There seems to be some confusion as to if a provisional licence holder is allowed to drive a car on a motorway, especially if supervised by an approved driving instructor.

The video below should hopefully give you all the information you need.

If you have passed the driving test, I would advice taking a Pass Plus Motorway Driving Lesson to gain confidence and be safe in this environment, as it is not quite the same as being on a 70MPH dual carriageway.

Roundabouts Correct use of Signals

In this driving video, I show you how to correctly use your indicators to alert other road users to your intentions at both mini and major roundabouts. Many learner drivers get confused as to what signal shoud be used when following the road ahead at a major multi-lane roundabout.
Another point of confusion is if the DSA examiner expects a test candidate to indicate when exiting a mini roundabout.

Driving Lesson - Meeting traffic

Driving Test Changes 2010

This driving video highlights the forthcoming changes that the DSA will be making to the driving test in April and October 2010.

The april test change will not even be noticed by many candidates but the introduction of independent driving to the test in october 2010 is a major change that could see a drastic drop in the pass rate and could even be considered unfair since candidate will need to remember a series of instructions which could be a problem for those who might have learning difficulties.

Please note that the route used on this driving video is not an actual dsa one for the hendon or mill hill centres.

Driving test effective observations

Many candidates fail their practical car driving tests due to not taking effective observations while out on the 40 minute assessment with the dsa examiner.

Even if there is nothing there, failing to consistently check the blind spots can lead to failing the driving test as it is an unsafe habit to have developed.

This driving school video shows how easy it is to forget that all important check especialy when concentrating hard on another skill which you might be having problems with.

The only way to make sure this doesn't happen to you, is to get into the habit of doing that 6 point check every time you stop on the left, or begin any of the test maneuvers.

Driving Signals

Driving Lessons - Traffic Lights

Orange means stop at the solid line before the traffic lights, and the dsa examiner will be checking to make sure you do this during the driving test.

Don't attempt to do what the driver in this driving video did, as it will mean you'll faill the driving test.

The video also gives some advice on dealing with traffic lights on fast national speed limit dual carriageways, something a lot of candidates are not comfortable with on the driving test and should be practised while on lessons with your instructor.

Driving straight across mini roundabout

You should normally try and drive around a mini roundabout, avoiding as much as possible the solid white marked area, however as this driving lesson video shows, this is not always possible and you might have to straight line it instead.

I have seen many learner drivers try to go around this particular mini-roundabout instead of driving straight across it and almost hit the kerb in the process.

The purpose of this roundabout is just to give priorty to traffic, which is why it is so small.

Driving Lesson - POM Video

Prepare, Observe and Move Routine

In this driving lesson video I explain POM, the technique a learner driver should always use when moving a car off from a stationary position, usually from a parked position on the left and when carrying out any of the set exercises you might get on the DSA driving test.

To get the car prepared in a manual car, you would use the clutch to select either 1st gear or reverse, set the gas (press down the accelerator a little bit and hold it still), find the bitting point (this is the bit a lot of learner drivers find hard, it is not covered in this video, as the pupil could do it okay) by slowly bring the left foot (clutch) up until you hear a change in the engine noise, at this point you need to keep both feet still as the car is now Prepared.

Carry out your observations as mentioned in the driving lesson video, making sure you don't just go through the motions, but allow your eyes to register the information. If it is safe, you can now move off by putting the handbrake down, bring the clutch up a litte bit, once the car starts to move hold the left foot still while you steer the car into the road or perform the test maneuver you have been asked to do. If you develop the habit of always using POM during your drving lessons, then you won't find yourself being penalised by the DSA driving examiner during your road test!

This is the latest episode of our learner driver reality video.

Our driving school reality show is not only educational, providing the UK driving test candidate with vital information, but the TV show gives you an insight into the life of driving instructors and the challenges they face getting various pupils to the standard required to pass the UK driving test.

In this episode of our reality TV show, we give advice on choosing an instructor, meet our resident ADI, while our TV presenter begins driving lessons.

The first episode of the long awaited Learner Driver reality TV show will be available from this website at the end of July 2008.

If you haven't subscribed to the TV show, then you are advised to do so either by email or RSS feed, and you don't want to miss an episode, it will also be available via iTunes.

Do you work, live or study in the Mill Hill, Hendon, Burnt Oak or Edgware areas of London and are learning to drive, want to learn to drive or have given up learning to drive, then maybe the UK driving school can help.

We are looking for people to take part in a pilot of the UK's first internet only reality show.

You will be given a free 1hr driving lesson, and if chosen to take part in the series will be offered up to 20hrs driving tuition towards preparing you for the UK practical car assessment you will have to book the driving test yourself though.

All tuition is provided by local instructors from UK driving schools, spaces are limited for the pilot, so contact us today, telling us a little about yourself, your past driving exprience and why you should be chosen to take part in the show.

We are also looking for foreign license holders who are looking to pass the UK driving test.

If you don't live or work in the areas mentioned, but are within a 10 mile radius and have a particularly intersting reason why you should participate in the show, then we would like to hear from you as well.

Reality TV for Provisional Licence Holders

We are looking for Learner drivers to take part in the UK's first reality TV show dedicated totally to the learner driver, produced by a qualified UK driving instructor. The show is aimed at providing information for provisional license holders who are preparing for the driving test, particularly those learning with family and friends.

Currently shooting in the Mill Hill, Hendon, Burnt Oak or Edgware areas of London, we are hoping to expand to other parts of London, and the the rest of the UK. The show it self is to be distributed over the internet via podcasts, so you will be able to watch over and over the show.

We are looking for people to take part in a pilot of the UK's first internet only reality TV show.

There are a few free 1hr driving lessons up for grabs, and we will be choosing some participants to then take part in the series, offering up to 20hrs driving tuition towards preparing you for the UK driving test.

All teaching will be provided by local instructors from UK driving schools, spaces are limited, so contact us today, telling us a little about yourself, your past driving knowledge, number of tests taken and why you should be chosen to take part in the show.

If you possess a foreign license, we would also like to hear from you for this TV reality show as we would like to follow you as you too prepare to pass the UK driving test.

You need to be in possession of a current UK provisional driving license to take part in the show.

Are you an independent driving instructor looking to increase your exposure in the Mill Hill, Hendon, Burnt Oak and Edgware areas of North London, then why not take part in the pilot show of our learner driver video TV show!

If you are an ADI or PDI, then this is an opportunity you can not afford to miss, all we ask is that you and your pupil are willing to be filmed for inclusion in our driving school video series.

Driving lessons

If you are interested in having cheap driving lessons with our resident driving instructor and live in the Mill Hill, Hendon, Burnt Oak, Edgware areas of North London, then please do get in touch.

Our instructor is a fully qualified DTI approved driving instructor, has many years of driving experience, is very patient and offers refresher lessons, motorway tuition, Pass Plus course, regular learner lessons as well as intensive driving courses for those who want to pass the test within a short period.

Our instructor provides a service that is good value for your money, with all lessons conducted on a one to one basis, following a DSA structured guide and you get a full hour of quality tuition.

The car used is compact and very easy to drive, has air conditioning so your lesson is conducted in a comfortable environment no matter the weather, is always less than 1 year old, thus very reliable and less likely to breakdown.

The adaptation of the car for filming of driving school videos also means that you can have your lesson recorded on DVD even if you are not interested in appearing on our learner driver TV show, a service that allows you to review your lesson over and over again in the comfort of your house at a time that suits you thus enhancing your learning experience.
