Conclusion: VMware Cloud Infrastructure Solutions

So what does all this mean? Let’s go back to where we started this section; Can you “Trust Your Cloud?” Your Private Cloud, Public Cloud or Hybrid Cloud.

We talked about three things, and the answer is certainly yes!

Sensitive data, can we make sure we’re protected from that? Absolutely, vShield protects you from that.

What about every VM whether it’s going around the entire edge of the datacenter, the Trust Zones, or with anti-virus protecting the actual VM? Check and check.

We talked about how you can run almost any application on vSphere 5. Frankly, we challenge you to find an application in your environment that isn’t going to fit in the monster VMs based on the scale and performance that we have.

In terms of support, almost every major ISV that you can think of has a support statement and we talked about the 1,420 ISVs and 2,400 applications that are already supported.

Let’s not forget ESXi, raising availability; lowering the attack footprint; and, lowering the amount of patching required.

We talked about availability, how you can extend disaster recovery to 3 times as many VMs as we have with Site Recovery Manager 5.

We talked about the challenge of wanting to drive costs down, both CAPEX and OPEX, and VMware’s approach to responding to business faster with greater agility.

We introduced the concept of Intelligent Policy Management, this idea of being able to tier the underlying infrastructure and how we’re delivering that today with storage tiering and Storage DRS. How Auto Deploy will allow you to add hosts, as many as 40 hosts in under 10 minutes.

And, we talked about how vCloud Director lets you create pre-populated, pre-pooled tiers of storage, compute and networking and then allocate them to separate organizations to deliver Infrastructure as a Service.

And finally, we’ve talked about the ability to protect your entire environment so that you can Trust Your Cloud. And let’s not forget that ‘your cloud’, as we said, is not just about your main site but a Hybrid Cloud extending to public cloud partners.

Now that you know more about the value the game-changing capabilities that VMware Cloud Infrastructure Solutions, let’s set up some time to review your position with respect to the cloud and talk in more depth about how these new features can help you get the agility you need from IT to help your business move forward even faster!

Step 10: Trust Your Cloud – Protection

What does it mean to protect every VM, say from a hacker who’s coming in?

Number 1, you may want to protect the actual edge of your entire datacenter with a VPN solution and VMware will do that.

Another part is what to do when a certain VM is compromised, or if a certain VM tries to do something it shouldn’t do. We need to make sure that you’re protected and we use something called a Trust Zone for that.

What the vShield technology will do with trust zones is allow you to take a VM or groups of VMs and firewall them from each other.

It’s not just hackers we have to be concerned about. What about viruses?

Typically, we install an agent in every VM to combat viruses. So viruses equal agents. That’s good but, especially in a virtualized environment, this can lead to an AV Storm.

An AV Storm is when every one of these agents that we have put in our VMs tries to scan at the same time—dragging down performance dramatically. As a consequence, you may tend to put fewer VMs into your environment than otherwise and don’t achieve the ROI you want from our solution.

If you want to solve the AV Storm issue you need to stop using agents. With VMware and vShield you can get rid of these agents and serve our AV partner solutions directly from our virtualization layer.

Eliminating the agents and the AV Storms lets you run more VMs in your environment. In fact, a third party has said that you can run a 30-100% denser environment. That’s 30-100% more VMs in an environment if you get rid of the agents; greatly increasing the value you can get from the solution.

Step 9: Trust Your Cloud – Risk

When we talk about being able to trust your cloud, a key concern for a lot of folks is this: “If I bring more agility into my environment in order to be able to respond to business faster; then what happens if some developer takes a VM, copies that VM and there happens to be sensitive information in that VM?”

That VM might be deleted in a week but what if it isn’t? What if it stays for a month, or two months, only for an auditor to find it and then you fail your compliance audit?

To keep this from happening, one of the new features that is coming out in vShield is Sensitive Data Detection.

vShield has a set of pre-defined templates. Based on where you are geographically and your industry it knows what to look for. In fact, vShield will sift through all of your unstructured data, whether it’s sitting in a flat file, in a file server, or on a SharePoint and search for sensitive items. If anything is found, it can leverage other parts of the vShield technology, quarantine that VM, and then you can figure out what to do about it.

Just as important is simply protecting a VM from a hacker or anything else that could happen; an intruder who’s trying to get access to your data. So let’s talk about protecting every VM next.

Step 8: Trust Your Cloud – Private, Public, Hybrid

Now, let’s consider your environment.

Does a VM need to be in “your” environment? The concept of your environment and your cloud is changing. So, it may make sense to have a lot of your VMs within a Private Cloud, but what about the Public Cloud?

You may have a relationship with a service provider, maybe it’s Verizon, maybe it’s Colt, maybe it’s someone else and it may make sense to leverage the Public Cloud, maybe for cost reasons, maybe for some agility reasons, you want to be able to flex into that cloud.

So VMware is delivering technology to help you move workloads that you’ve deployed from your private cloud into your public cloud. The goal for us and the vision is it’s not just about moving a workload once, it’s about being able to move your workload when it makes sense to do so, being able to see your entire environment in one single view, and being able to manage it as one flexible pool of capacity.

An environment in which you start thinking of capacity, regardless of borders, as one large pool, is what we at VMware call a Hybrid Cloud. And this is a critical part to our vision.

Other companies talk about the Private Cloud as the only secure way to provide services or the Public Cloud as the long-term best model because of cost reasons.

VMware views it very differently. We think that the future is about both.

We believe most companies are going to have some assets in the Private and some in the Public so the future belongs to the Hybrid Cloud.

Now when we talk about Hybrid Cloud what’s the first thing that pops into the head of many people? Security! Can I be secure enough? So let’s have a conversation about VMware’s security vision.

<< VMware: Responding to Business Faster – Virtual Datacenters
VMware: Trust Your Cloud – Risk >>

Step 7: Responding to Business Faster – Virtual Datacenters

With vCloud Director 1.5 you can now take your storage, compute and network resources and pre-pool them into a new construct called a Virtual Datacenter or VDC.

As an example, imagine two VDCs—Gold and Bronze. Each is a set of tiered storage, compute and network resources.

Now, how will this help you?

These Virtual Datacenters allow you to start serving the business in a very different way. The Cloud is a truly multi-tenant environment; so you’re now able to set up separate organizations that operate independently in a tiered, segregated environment which leverages a common set of resources.

The organizations could represent any kind of units that exist within your business. You might be a university with 2 different schools or you might have production and Test/Dev environments.

Anytime you have an individual who says I want “My” infrastructure that might represent an organization.

What you can do, and this is where the magic of vCloud Director comes in, is take a piece of the Gold Virtual Datacenter and allocate it to that organization. You can take another piece and allocate it to a second organization, let’s call them A and B for short.

You can do the exact same thing for the Bronze VDC over the two organizations.

You can now create catalogs with pre-defined resources, like a standard LAMP stack, that are either specific to an organization or common across organizations.

So, a user in any organization can deploy a virtual machine or group of machines from a pre-created catalog in a self-service manner; directly into their pre-allocated organizational Virtual Datacenter.

This means that you’re able to deliver a self-service experience to the people in your environment, exactly when they need it.

Step 6: Responding to Business Faster – Auto Deploy

Another key to an agile, automated, tiered environment is the ability to add capacity dynamically.

For Example: What happens if you find that you’re running out of resources, not storage resources, but actually running out of hosts? In this situation you may want to take a brand-new server and get that server up and running as fast as possible.

With a new feature called Auto Deploy, rather than walking up to this new host with an image on a DVD, you can simply plug the host in and it will pull all of the image information that it needs directly from the network; and be up and running in minutes.

With Auto Deploy you can add up to 40 hosts in less than 10 minutes.

Intelligent Policy Management is obviously very important in terms of lowering the OPEX and improving the dynamism of your environment, but really – where are we moving to?

What we hear from our customers repeatedly is that you want to move towards Infrastructure as a Service. So, to do that, we’re taking your virtualized infrastructure to the next level.

Step 5: Responding to Business Faster
- Intelligent Policy Management

We’ve talked about availability and disaster recovery and now I want to continue to push on the value of running your applications on VMware Cloud Infrastructure and Responding to Business Faster. This is all about agility.

VMware’s approach to delivering greater agility is actually very different from our competitors’. Others think that the way to reduce complexity in an environment and deliver more agility by taking a set of finite steps and script them to hide that complexity.

VMware’s approach is quite different.

Our approach involves Intelligent Policy Management. Intelligent Policy Management is a different approach for tackling complexity. Instead of scripting a set of finite tasks, Cloud Infrastructure will allow you to take policies and attach them to applications at the VM level—as well as the underlying infrastructure—so you can tier that underlying infrastructure in the way that best serves your business needs.

As an example, let’s say that I have four arrays in my environment. I have two very fast arrays and two average arrays. What we can do is tier these into logical constructs.

Let’s call one array “Gold”; and the other, “Silver”. Now it’s not just about allowing you to tier it, it’s also about allowing you to manage the tiers on an ongoing basis.

This allows you to make a decision up front about where a VM is going to live based on its value to the business. Let’s say we place a VM in the Gold tier. As we see one array in that tier filling up, with storage DRS the infrastructure is now smart enough to move that VM for you from one Gold array to another, automatically; all according to policies you’ve set so we can maintain our SLA for that VM.

Step 4: Run Business Critical Apps with Confidence – vSphere Replication

The first new feature of SRM 5 is vSphere Replication.

vSphere Replication means that vSphere can do the VM replication between sites at the virtualization layer so you now have an alternative to doing it at the storage array level.

What does this mean for you? It means it’s cheaper and easier to replicate. What we’re finding with our customer metrics is that you can now protect 3 times as many VMs with SRM 5.

The second feature is Failback.

When you have a disaster event, your main site goes down and you need to shift over to your DR site; but that’s not the end of the process. Eventually, you need to recover. So we’ve added failback so you can fail to your DR site and then failback to your main site automatically.

This adds dramatically to the value of site recovery manager. In fact, we’ve heard from customers that this is not just useful for disaster recovery; these same new features also mean SRM 5 is very, very useful for planned datacenter migrations.

Step 3: Run Business Critical Apps with Confidence – SRM 5

So now that we’ve talked about how, with vSphere, 5 there should be nothing in your environment that you have any concerns about virtualizing, let’s talk a bit more about the business value of virtualizing.

It’s not just about lowering cost. Availability and Disaster Recovery remain major objectives in the enterprise.

An important goal for many companies is to set up a DR site and replicate their virtual machines and their applications from their main site onto this DR site.

One of the challenges of protecting as many VMs as you might want to protect in your environment, is the cost and complexity of doing so.

VMware really helped reduce that cost and complexity with Site Recovery Manager. SRM helped make it a lot simpler and more automated; but, there was still the requirement to have storage arrays that replicate your VMs between your main site and DR site.

In this launch we’re introducing SRM 5. And there are 2 major new features that make it a lot easier to protect the majority of your VMs.
