The Design Alliance

Many years back when i was working for William Harald-Wong, i made some experimentation while my project documentation of his founding the Design Alliance. This was made out of fun, an A1-sized poster, front and back printed in 4-colour. When opened, looks like tarot cards with each card consisting a character in all east asian languages.

morgen: A short publication project on lies, fame, media manipulation and exploitation on readers. 'morgen' means 'tomorrow' has a utopian quality presenting its opinion with a tint of black humor. This project started out as an observation in a means of reproduction of pictures found on newspapers. In commemorance of Ferdinand Kriwet, Lina Grumm from HIT Studio was assigned by Prof. Günter-Karl Bose in organizing this Workshop. Kriwet's works mainly engaged with text, language and concrete poetry since the 1960s. He was also one of the artists who contributed in the pop culture era in Germany. One of the spread depicts the recent controversy against the construction of minarets in Switzerland (also most countries in central Europe). The ban was said to be not a rejection of the Muslim community, religion or culture, which puts Muslim (or whatever things symbolizes Islam) as a culture of threat and taboo. This taboo questions the meaning of conservatism opposing the opposite imagery, a dildo, symbolizes modernism, fantasies and ignorance (what's trivial is often overlooked).

Although this was blogged about a lot last month, this really needs a post.
This is a window display By Tokujin Yoshioka for the Hermés store in Tokyo. The installation went on display at the end of November and is up until the end of January (10). Tokujin's work slips between design (in the broadest sense) and art; a lot of his work is considered as 'art' for its innovation, yet sits very comfortably as product design, furniture, installation etc. Tokujin designed under Issey Miyake for a long period and has also produced some very innovative work for other companies in a variation of disciplines. Zakas’ book features many designs by his Parson’s School furniture design students in the 1970s, and this particular student produced some of the book’s most interesting designs. Sisi Aress Workshop

Beginning of this year i participated in a Workshop Aktionsklasse in Berlin, a collaborative symposium about Graphic Design organised by students of the Kunsthochschule Weissensee, HGB Leipzig and UDK Berlin.

At Sisi Aress's workshop, we were given a task to visualize and explain the essence and character of the planet earth to a foreign or a new inhabitant, i.e. the Man from the Mars, the man at the moon, or Kaspar Hauser.

This video by Janna Meeus—titled ”Visiting Karel Martens”—is a very short and informal documentary of the Dutch designer and his work. In addition to his efforts towards academia (founding the Werkplaats Typografie, critiquing at Yale School of Art, teaching at the Jan Van Eyck Academie, etc.), Karel Martens has also completed quite a number of traditional projects through his independent practice. The video candidly depicts the designer as he presents and explains a selection of these projects through digital documentation, videos (in video!) and scale models.

It took me only a few days to set up this blog, but months to start with a post. I guess i was very much anticipating my semester in the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK) which kicked off three weeks ago, and now, lectures within the chosen subjects and my Major in "Information Design" is slightly in order.

I'm totally excited over a project we'll be working on this semester, "Newspaper Design". What was required was not primarily a Newspaper as an end-product in the end, but an in-depth research on this medium, especially when the threat of the Internet has long existed. In the documentation, i'm working with another teammate on the Threats of the Web, Digitalization on Newspaper. On the other hand, each of us has to work individually or in a group for a practical project — a radical form of a Newspaper: Format, Design or Content.

My theme will be on "National Identity of Newspaper", bringing back the Pre-WW2 Newspaper when it was in many aspects; Design (i.e. Typography — Black Letters vs Nazi, where one had to be politically correct when Typefaces were used), Journalism (Content — more substance but less unnecessary infographics, illustrations and advertisements), Technology (affecting the speed and quality of Newspaper Materials). Generally, it used to be more distinct than what it is now in the 21st Century (i.e. Most German/European Newspaper looks ALL the same, except for a few others like Le Monde, The Guardian, Corriere della Sera & etc). Researching if timelessness actually exists in Newspaperdesign.
