I’ve been in college for a few weeks now and am pretty much settled in to the university way of life. My sleeping hours have shifted, I spend a lot of time on homework, and can eat whatever I want. Life as a college student is great! Here are some observations I’ve had recently on college life:

Staying organized is important. My first few weeks, I found that I was forgetting things and now I have a serious filing system in real life and on my computer. I dedicate some time each day to making sure I am organized so I can find things I need the next day.

I have generally stopped procrastinating. As the king of procrastination in high school, this surprised me. The quicker I finish my homework, the quicker I can move on to fun things. One week, I locked myself in my room the whole week so I could get far enough ahead in my classes that I could go to Yosemite and not worry about working.

The workload doesn’t seem as big as it is. Sure, I will sometimes spend five hours a day on homework but that is what college is. Looking back, I will think, “Damn, I read 150 pages yesterday”, but I have not really minded it while I have been working.

From a New York Supreme Court Justice in the New York Times:

After a career in public service, I regretfully say, I would not do it again.

Philosophy and point of view led me to doing good instead of doing well, so I never expected to become rich. But now that I’m in my 10th year of a frozen judicial salary — less than summer students are being paid at law firms — I have concluded that whatever I may have accomplished for the public, I have wasted 25 years of my life by serving on the bench.

Starting to study philosophy is a lot like falling in love (which makes sense, given the literal meaning of the word, right?). When a person falls in love, it’s normal to be so enthralled with the beloved that nothing and no one else seems worth a thought. Every conversation eventually turns back toward the beloved. Time spent apart is considered wasted. Other, ordinary folk throw up their hands in exasperation — and the lover cares naught.
For tourists, it seems like the adventure of a lifetime — riding in a jeep through the snake-infested jungle to see the exotic “long-neck women” of the Kayan tribe. But now Zember has removed her coil — in protest of her captivity. She no longer wants to keep Thailand’s shameful secret: that the long-neck women are Burmese refugees who are being prevented by Thai authorities from taking up asylum overseas. As a lucrative tourist attraction, the women are forced to live in a virtual human zoo. (Marie Claire)
