I sent this out to my rather neglected email list but since it's been so long since I last sent a note, there are probably a lot of outdated addresses in there...

2009 was a rather on/off year on uncapitalized with more quiet moments than perhaps other years. but there were trips to vienna, prague, and san francisco. for a while I managed to take a photo a day and collect it into weekly updates.

after a bit of an absence, the photo postcards returned, this time through the site fotomoto. view any photo large and look for the postcard link to send it via email. I've also been testing out their photo printing services, and so far the quality and speed seem pretty good, though I'm still not sure offering items for sale conflicts with other definitions of "uncapitalized" I may have enjoyed -- but then I've also started using the shift key inside posts more often. you can also find a link to check print availability on any large photo view. and please contact me if you have any issues.

next month will mark 9 years of uncapitalized.net; so thank you for following! I'll definitely be thinking about how to celebrate 2011's anniversary...

it took a little longer than "a bit," but I finally got through updating all the templates to reactivate comments. I wound up reconfiguring all the templates, which in general won't mean much to anyone but me... though now you will be required to either register in order to comment or use your login from OpenID, livejournal, or wordpress to authenticate (you can do the second option from any "Sign in to comment" link on the site). No more waiting to see your comment show up on the site and less spam for me to moderate! I've missed getting comments now and then, so I hope this will make it more fun for everyone.

I also took the opportunity to redo the home page, though I still want to futz with the styling of it. I haven't really checked this on any PCs, so it might look like crap. I decided to take the risk.

in the process of editing templates, I discovered that the photo postcard form was no longer working because of unrelated changes on the server. I'll have to figure out another way to send photos via email. for now I left the broken form there because I felt lazy.

I'm sure there will be little errors here and there, but hopefully nothing too huge. I also for some reason decided to reconfigure most of the URLs even though every time I've done this in the past it became a bigger ordeal than anticipated (I never learn). so now I have to go through and fix lots of internal links and wonder if the change was worth it! sorry if you came from an external link. you can always search for what you're looking for.

the upgrading is done, but comments will be closed for the time being while i take some time to adjust the code to take advantage of the new features.

i'm finally going to start upgrading movable type (the system that makes uncapitalized go) from 3.x to 4.x --- there are a lot of big changes in these two systems, especially in templates. so there's a possibility of things not working right. since my site is static, it shouldn't be too bad unless i erroneously rebuild pages. but i seem to do that everytime i make this sort of update.

with all the moving distraction, i almost forgot to point this out! if you never zoom in on photos, you might not have noticed the newish feature: sending photos as postcards.

this was one intent that i forgot to mention in the to-do list I shared several months ago. i crossed off two of those three items: setting up a site-wide search page and bringing back the uncapitalized bot to let you know about the (incredibly infrequent) email update list. i have also been working on a template for those emails and hope to get in the habit of sending out seasonal highlights.

the blue moon camera customer show starts this weekend in st john's and runs through the end of the month. five venues will be displaying this year's selections as well as the past four.

there will be a couple of mine in there somewhere!

i've been slowly working on cleaning things up, making stuff prettier, and improving functionality here and there.

the photo archives now include smaller thumbnails.

there is also a tag cloud page that will probably be more interesting as time goes on.

the booklog search will now see the author fields again.

clicking on an author's name will take you to their name on the author page.

there are still several small things on my list, like

a site-wide search page

a page for the currently unmentioned email list

seeing if i can add quick pop-up links to the header

and probably other stuffs too.

i'm not planning on updating to movable type 4 until all the plug-ins get updated.

i've finally finished all the little templates on the site, including some new error pages hopefully you won't get to see too often. but now things will be quiet still while i head out of town. i had hoped to scan some more photos to post while i was gone but ran out of time. any comments posted might not show up on the site for the next few days, as i might not be near a computer to moderate them.

there are a few developments still to come in the next few months...

i've been working on this design for uncapitalized over the last month or so. the other day---addled by the heat, surely---i accidentally deleted the booklog archives, thinking i was in the temporary folder not the actual, real, on-the-public-site folder. since i am close to finishing up the rest of the necessary templates to go live anyhow, and the booklog is the only part of the site that has been active the last few years... i loaded up the design there.

if you've found this, you've already been poking around. it will probably be obvious where work is yet to be done.
