Patty Griffin – Waterloo Records, TX

With only a few days before the May 7th release of her record, American Kid, Patty Griffin made a short visit to Waterloo Records to play some new tracks for a handful of fans.

In the pared-down set (with only producer Craig Ross on guitar and omnichord) she opened with the bluesy “I’m Gonna Miss You When You’re Gone” and “Please Don’t Let Me Die In Florida,” a rocker inspired by a “verbatim quote” from her father who was a “tiny, Irish guy… a little curmudgeon.” She added that while he didn’t want to die there, she actually likes Florida (having lived there once) and that “a girl from Maine can’t complain about the culture anywhere.”

Closing the 30-minute show with “That Kind Of Lonely,” and a tongue-in-cheek tribute to her grandparents, “Get Ready Marie” she stuck around the store signing autographs and chatting with the audience.

The Lumineers and Shovels & Rope – ACL Live Taping, TX

Last night’s Austin City Limits taping of Denver-based darlings, The Lumineers kept the studio audience on their feet, stomping and clapping along to quintessential folk-sing-along “Ho Hey” and “Stubborn Love” while sprinkling in some covers (Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues”) and a new song, simply called “Duet.”

Shovels & Rope (Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent) opened the night with their Gillian Welch/David Rawlings harmonies (and murder ballads) mixed with raunchy rock ‘n’ roll vibe.

The show will be aired on Austin City Limits as part of their 39th season this fall.

Patty Griffin releases “Ohio” from American Kid

New music from Patty Griffin! “Ohio” off of the upcoming American Kid album (May 7). The track heavily features Robert Plant and is apparently was inspired by stories of the Underground Railroad.
