Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 147 – Something New – Pursuing Your Calling

The reason why we’re doing this podcast is to discuss this whole idea of calling. Calling is one of the biggest passions in life. How does our calling affect everything that we do? What does it mean to have a unique calling?

We’re going to be discussing “calling” further at pursuingyourcalling.com. We’ll be having guests who will tell us how they found their calling and how much different their lives are from when they were doing something else that isn’t their calling. We’d love to hear your feedback or review on iTunes for this brand new podcast!

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 145 – New Skills for Jeff and Cindy – How About You?

Today I will be sharing some sort of a personal story. It’s about our two virtual assistants Jeffrey and Cindy. Both of them are learning new skills. For Jeffrey, new skills as he moves on to a career that is a better fit for him and for Cindy, new skills as she is being trained to take over Jeffrey’s tasks.

Sometimes, as we continue to live our lives, we may feel trapped in the job that we have. We are however stopped from moving on to something better in the belief that we do not possess the skills needed for the new endeavor that we want. Learning new skills is never easy but we shouldn’t make excuses to what could really make us happy in our career. Are you ready to take on some new skills?

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 142 – Biggest Obstacles to Getting Out of Debt

Gregg Pechmann is our co-host on this podcast episode.

Our topic is the biggest obstacles to getting out of debt.

Gregg has a new book, Upside Down, How We Survived Seven Short Sales. It describes the short sales process in the real estate industry and how we bounced back from 7 short sales in the past.

The first step is the mindset of wanting to be debt-free, less than 5% of people save in this country. They put credit and debt up there with oxygen, and water. We’re called to be better stewards of money.

The second step is change your behavior.

The third step is to take action. Take the budget that God has given us.

You have to be intense and very motivated to pay off the debt. Are you willing to do the hard work to accomplish this?

Having funds in the bank is more important than the debt. Make sure you have 6-12 months of emergency funds set up.

Don’t lose hope. Be willing to pay the price to become debt-free.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 141 – How Do I Get a Higher Salary?

We’ve got some caller feedback from Katie Major. She’s responding to a question we posted on social media. “What do you think about salary? How important is it to you?”

Personally, I negotiate for a higher salary at the beginning, right before I’m hired.

We appreciate Katie’s feedback and we hope you enjoy it as well.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 134 – Interview with Matt Wegner, Financial Coach

Matt Wegner is our guest on this latest interview series episode. He became a financial coach in 2009. He helps people take charge of their money instead of their money controlling them.

His training was in civil engineering. But, he went straight to the military after earning his degree. After 6 years, he moved to Wisconsin to work in manufacturing.

He was passionate about helping or empowering others so he got some training and took some classes on how to become a financial coach. He and his wife Janelle started their business on a part-time basis. They did this for 3 years until they got to a point where the only way to make their business profitable is if they focused on it full time.

Matt was a risk-taker but his wife was not so for 2 weeks he prayed to God asking for what he should do.

After 2 weeks, he got fired from his job. At that point, they knew exactly what they’re supposed to do. Within 3 to 4 months of losing his job, they were able to pay off their house and become debt-free.

Tune in to hear more about his story.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 133 – Ethics At Your Job

In this episode, my wife and I wrestle with the idea of ‘ethics at work’.

Years ago, I was at a job where I was asked to sell a defective product. It was a tough spot to be in. Over time, I decided to resign from that position.

Stephanie supported me 120%. She believed that God would provide something for us…and He did. Something better than we could have created ourselves.

If you’re in a difficult spot in your work, you can make a change. You don’t have to stay in a place where your ethics are violated.

Do the right thing in your job. Trust in God moving forward and making positive changes in your life. God will honor that.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 132 – Interview with Josh Bulloc: The Bootstrap Coach

Our guest for today is Josh Bulloc, the Bootstrap Coach.

Josh says “I help teach people take control of their lives. I call myself the Bootstrap Coach. I like the concept of the bootstraps. You’re pulling yourself up and you’re not asking for permission.”

“When I worked in manufacturing, I noticed that a lot of individuals didn’t realize they had the potential to take control of their lives because they’re letting the companies run their lives for them.”

“I’m very good at giving my opinion. I started working in an assembly line and I realized I didn’t like it. I was able to move away from that situation so I shared my learnings with other people who wanted to do the same thing.”

For people who want a change in their lives, Josh recommends going out there and trying out different things – talk to your supervisor to see if you can do something different. Go out in the weekends and volunteer.

“If you’re interested in something, go and do it for six months, see if you like it.”

“Write things down about yourself – your wants, your personality, etc. Journaling will help train you to look for things you’re after.

You can get in touch with Josh via the following:

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 131 – Finances are a Symptom of Other Problems

Our co-host for today is Gregg Pechmann, owner of Pechmann Coaching

Our topic for today are about finances.

According to Gregg, there are always some other underlying symptoms regarding a couple’s finances.

“If the spouses are not on the same page, things will not work.”

“Be intentional about the time where people sit down and talk about it. Praying with your wife really helps a lot. And things fall in place.”

He narrates that he and his wife pray before and after they talk about money.

Gregg adds “Sharon and I still have a lot of work to do. But we’ve come a long way from 3 years ago. It’s all spiritual – finances, your place of work, it’s all connected.”

“Why do you want to be rich? Is it to bless other people. My end goal in financial coaching is that you could become an unbelievable blessing to somebody else.”

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 130 – Getting Fired

Have you found yourself in danger of being fired? I found myself in this situation a few years ago. Here’s some things that I recommend that you ‘wrestle with’ if you feel like you may be fired soon.

1. Where’s your worth as a human being?

Is it in your job security? In your salary? Is it in God? Your family? Your friends?

2. How bad is it? If you lost your job tomorrow, are you going to be homeless? Are you truly never going to find a decent job again? What’s the worst possible scenario?

3. Could this really be for your good?

Let me remind you, however bad it is, it’s probably not as bad as you think it is.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 126 – Finding a Job in a Down Economy

Is it hard to find a better job in a ‘down’ economy? You bet it is. But…is is possible? Absolutely.

We had a client that went through our career-coaching process last summer. She did all the groundwork to find a job that’s a better fit. She worked hard at figuring out who she was at the core. She also worked hard in prepping well for job interviews.

I spoke to her a few days ago and found out that she’d not only found a job that was a better fit…but she took a big leap forward in salary as well. She became the Director of Business Development for a local company and is loving her new job.

It is possible to find a better job in a ‘down’ economy .

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 123 – Seasons of your Career

Like seasons change, I think there are also ‘seasonal changes’ in your career.

Spring – You’re in a new job or industry. Everything’s new and exciting.

Summer – The newness maybe wearing off but you’re productive. You like what you’re doing. You’re getting compensated for it. You have a high level of responsibility. Generally, it’s going well for you.

Fall – You may be compensated well but there’s some changes and maybe you’re no longer that productive. Maybe you notice that there are people around you that were promoted whom you thought wouldn’t be. You thought you were the better choice for the new management position. Maybe someone you mentored have passed you up in the position.

Winter – You’re just existing in your job. Beyond your pay checks and benefits, there’s not a whole lot more beyond these.

Which ‘career season’ are you currently in?

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 122 – Searching for the Ideal Job

Sometimes you have to take something that’s not ideal to get to where you want to be.

These are some of the reasons you may consider taking a job that’s not so ideal:

1. When you’re switching industries – You will need an entry point in the industry you’re switching to.

2. Skills – You need to develop those new skills.

3. Long-term – You have to think about how it’s going to benefit you long-term. For example, I took a position that wasn’t ideal but it pointed me in a better direction.

In this down economy, it’s harder to get a good job but it’s not impossible.

Don’t be afraid to take a position that’s not ideal but could point you in a more positive direction.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 120 – Is it time you get out of there?

Is it time for you to get out of there? It’s not just a Jimi Hendricks song. It’s also a question about your job. Should you get out of there?

Below are some indications that, maybe, it’s time for you to look for a job with meaning and purpose.

1. You see a ceiling in your job. – You realize you’re not going to move up anymore.

2. You’re bored. – Your day-to-day work just doesn’t give you passion.

3. Your colleagues attitude towards you has changed – Has there been major changes in those relationships??

4. Your boss’s attitude toward you has changed – Something’s different in how he treats you.

If you’re experiencing one or more of these things…it may be time for a change.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 119 – Pursuing Her Calling and Pursuing God – Julie Borja

A little over 3 years ago, Julie moved to Kyiv, Ukraine, working for a non-profit organization that works and helps with students.

She helped students learn and practice English, doing English clubs and discussion groups, lots of English Bible studies and also helped conduct English camps in the summer and winter.

About three months ago, she moved back to the US and she’s now working in a school for emotionally-disturbed children.

She was terrified at first, not knowing what to expect but she’s incredibly happy and surprised how it turned out.

She advised “For people who want to do something more meaningful, you have to be willing to let go of what you’ve got.”

“To not be afraid and just to trust God if God called you to something and you feel like that’s where you’re supposed to go even though that doesn’t necessarily make sense, sometimes that’s where we’re supposed to be.”

There are a lot of good personality assessment types but we prefer the Myers-Briggs type indicator because statistically, it is the most accurate personality assessment. It has over 50 years of research.

There are 4 areas that Myers-Briggs measures.

How you get your energy

How you take in information

How you make decisions

How you live your lifestyle

Tune in to hear more about the MBTI. If you are interested in taking the assessment, drop us a note at questions@leadershipequip.com and we’ll get you fixed up

We recently posted a blog article on the topic of Good bosses and Bad bosses.

Do you have a good boss, a bad boss or something in between?

I’ve had a couple of bosses throughout the years. Most of them had been very good while some of them were not.

The best bosses had been those who were lenient, but at the same time, who challenged me to do my best.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 115 – Entrepreneur or Traditional Employee

In this podcast episode, my wife and I talk about when looking for work that’s a good fit, does it have to be an entrepreneurial type of situation or owning your own business, or can it be traditional employment? I’ve been debating about this quite a bit in the past weeks.

My wife Stephanie thinks you don’t need to have your own business in order to find fulfillment. “It’s ok if you don’t have your own business to fulfill what we call your calling.”

To people listening to this podcast who feel you’re less of a person because you don’t own your own business, to heck with that idea! We have these friends who believe that if you don’t have your own business then you’re not living out God’s calling on your life. We just think that’s garbage.

Owning your own business is for some people but it’s not for everyone.

Whether you’re planning on starting your own business or finding work that’s a good fit, it’s important to talk to friends and close family members to weigh the advantage and disadvantages of each.

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 114 – Interview with James Dibben: Moving Forward to Traditional Employment

James is a returning guest on our Meaningful Work Interview Series. After his first interview, he came to a decision that he needs to close down his construction-related company and take a look at pursuing employment through traditional employment.

Depending on your personality, being self-employed or working for a company (in a more traditional role) could be a good fit.

James recounts that his decision came about because of “The overwhelming need to feed my family. I’ve been self-employed for six years and 8 months and I’ve enjoyed that. Being in a construction-related company, we install cabinetry in brand new homes. ”

“There’s been a lot of emotions that I’ve had to combat. I’m excited because I’ve learned a lot and grown a lot in my understanding of business and I just really believe that there’s a company out there that could really benefit from somebody who’s just been in the trenches.”

James will always have an “entrepreneurial mindset.” In my opinion, more and more companies like to hire entrepreneurial-minded people.

“If your ‘work’ and ‘play’ activities are closely intertwined, you still have to turn the money-making portion of your life off completely, so that you are wholly and completely spending time with your family. Work should be something you enjoy. If it’s not, it’s time for you to look at other opportunities.”

“It’s important not to have your identity too wrapped up in your employment – type of employment, income level, etc. Otherwise, you will lose your identity.”

“If your faith in God is because he’s blessed you with XYZ, then your faith will leave you if those things leave you. We struggle with having faith because of the wrong things. But…we keep growing closer to…and trusting in God through the ups and downs of life – regardless of our employment status.”

Pursuing Meaningful Work Episode 113 – Do you know your Personality Type?

My friend James Dibben and I just had a conversation regarding Personality. I use the Myers-Briggs Type Personality Assessment. I’m an ENFP and my wife is an ISTJ.

‘E’ stands for Extroversion, you get your energy by engaging in the outside world.
‘I’ stands for Introversion; you get your energy by engaging in the inner world.

‘N’ stands for Intuition; big picture, sixth sense, things like that.
‘S’ stands for Sensing; very focused on details.

‘T’ stands for Thinking; you’re focused on Logic and Facts.
‘F’ stands for Feeling; you’re focused on the value of feelings of people that will be affected by a decision.

‘J’ stands for Judging; doesn’t mean judgmental – it means structured, organized, likes to bring closure.
‘P’ stands for Perceiving; means spontaneous, flexible, open-ended.

Do you know your personality type? If you do, that can be useful in helping you find a good career. It can also help you understand how to treat your day-to-day life.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll be offering some special deals on our personality assessments and our career coaching. Stay tuned for that. We do know, around the holidays, we’re going to offer 50% OFF on our personality assessments.
