A FEW CROSSWORD CLUES ….FOR SCHOOL EDUCATION….

1. A ‘crazy’ ten to catch……….NET
2. A slangy professional carrying a heavy weight is charged positively….PROTON
3. A river…or something in a garden….FLOWER
4. ‘endless’ FEW ,hard metal…… FE is for IRON
5. It turns red or blue in testing conditions….LITMUS

More: (with explanations)
1. A HEARTLESS CEO is very dangerous……….now ‘heartless’ on surface means cruel….but if you are out of box….then heartless CEO could mean CO ….as ‘E’ is the heart of the word CEO…..
….so the answer would be CO….or…carbon monoxide….which is a dangerous gas !

2. SAG strangely….and it is formless….
'strangely’ is a clue….that means SAG has to be rearranged……to become GAS………which is formless……

3. RIM in a way…..is a diagnostic test….
this one is quite simple….RIM in a way is MRI ; Magnetic Resonance Indexing….which is a diagnostic test !

4. mad STREEX puts pressure
….now one has not only to be out of box….but grammatically correct as well !
….so ‘mad’ STREEX is EXERTS…..which is…..puts pressure !

5. diamond essentially is a tail-less bond…after car !
….a tail-less bond is bon……as ‘d’ is the tail….. after car….bon would be….

Lets understand the funda of cluing for crosswords :

Note: All clues have ( normally should have ) ...a 'surface indication'.....that is to mislead.........and the 'real indication'....that leads us to the answer....

Example:

Clue : Original equipment manufacturer in short is this ! (3 letters)

Surface clue leads us to believe that the answer is describing a trait of an original equipment manufacturer...

whereas the answer is hidden....in short 'original equipment manufacturer'...which is OEM

So the answer is OEM

Another Example:

Clue : An hour when it is getting late for a team (6 letters)

Surface clue indicates that it is getting late for a team to do something...

Actual answer is hidden in .....an hour when it is getting late !

(Come on......pull up your socks !)

Eleventh hour is when it is said to be getting late

and a team is also referred as eleven

So the answer is ELEVEN ( not eleventh....as in crosswords one has to keep the grammatical emphasis of the clue as well !! a team can be called eleven not eleventh !)

(Prime of PRIME is the first letter 'P' ....followed by 'rides' ....so the answer is PRIDES....which means ....feels great )

SECOND CLUE :

Praise ! OLE GUY ! (6 letters)

(answer is EULOGY)

THIRD CLUE :

ME cant start....and GO ....must be vain ! (3 letters)

.....(the answer is EGO.....it is vain....and Me cant start means....it is only letter E and...then...GO)

FOURTH CLUE :

MENTAL instability....cry and relate your sob story (6 letters)

...'instability' means the word mental has to be rearranged.......and the answer is LAMENT !

FIFTH CLUE :

BRIEF physical exercise inside only....but not hidden (6 letters)

....brief physical exercise is PE ...inside the word 'only'.......so the answer is OPENLY........

My focus....as usual....would be on understanding the cluing ....the trick part....and also in giving you ....the pleasure of right brain creativity .....as well as left brain analytical/intelligent thrill......

....before signing off for today....here are two examples :

SPIRITUAL CROSSWORD CLUING......

REPRAY properly and your wishes shall be granted by this ( 6 letters)

REPRAY....properly implies.....rearranging the word 'repray'......and the answer is...
PRAYER..........and by praying your wishes can be granted !!!

PSYCHOLOGIC CROSSWORD CLUING ....

The last of money earns desires !....(6 letters)

....the 'last' of money is the letter 'y' and earns with a 'y' is YEARNS.......and the literal meaning of 'desires'...... is yearns !!!

CLUES are to be read creatively.......it is a whole brain exercise....where your logical reasoning ....coupled with 'holistic'....overall thinking comes into play...

And as we know.....cluing normally has two parts

1.'surface' answer....that seems obvious....but

2.the real answer ...also given....hidden....

....and the fun with cluing is in reading in between the lines...as if....

So....here we go......

First clue : High fliers score in golf !

On the surface it seems that those who are high fliers....normally score in golf...

...but the hidden answer is EAGLES

...as eagles are high fliers....and 'EAGLES' is a score in golf !

Second clue :

VEN LEE is shattered as a team !

Shattered is an indication that VEN LEE has to be re arranged.....

so the answer is ELEVEN........which is a team!

Third clue :

Great initially then nothing...a lie...saves in football !

This one is a real teaser !

Great initially is 'G' ....first letter of the word
Then nothing ....means 0 after G....
So g..o...a lie....is the answer...(GOALIE) ...who saves in football !!!

Fourth clue : A trademark leather....

simple !! Trademark is a kind of patent....and so is a type of leather

......so the answer is PATENT !

Fifth clue :

Give back a turning turner !

A turning turner....would be RETURN !....which is also to give back !

......so the answer is RETURN !

SOLVING CROSS WORD CLUES IS A RIGHT BRAIN CREATIVITY EXERCISE

Take an example:

The clue says : "metal press to de crease".....(4 lettered)

The surface meaning can be......it is a kind of machine to reduce something.....or that the metal press reduces/decreases....

But if you think in a non linear fashion.....it is a 'press' to de crease....or to remove the crease.....and the word 'metal' is the straight meaning of the word......

...so the word is IRON.....which is also called a press.

Another example :

Clue says....A cabin for this cat !....(3 lettered)

This one is quite simple......UNCLE TOM'S CABIN.........and the cat here is TOM........
......so the answer is TOM

Third clue:UNDERSTAND CD SIREN DIFFERENTLY ... (7 lettered)

This is nearly cryptic.....

'differently' here is an indication that 'c d siren' has to be rearranged.....
....and 'understand' is the straight meaning of the word

.....the answer is DISCERN.....which means...to understand
....and it is rearranged 'c d siren' !

We can see how crossword solving takes into account your linear knowledge (Left Brain dominated knowledge) as well as your imaginative brilliance (Right Brain oriented)

So if someone says "PAN'S COMPANION IS VERY ADDICTIVE"
What he means is "POT"

.....and THREE TREES IN SPAIN WITHOUT DIRECTIONS......
means "TRE"

(E&S are directions removed from the word TREES....and TRE is three in Spain !)

WHY CROSS WORDS....?

Words are great things........and a song says ...."Its only words.....and words are all I have...."

and the Holy scriptures say that ...."First it was the word..."

....but words lead us no where...... if we literally get stuck up with them......we need to read 'in-between' the lines....!!!

......And what I would say is :

" CROSS WORDS AND ENTER THE LAND OF UNDERSTANDING !"

....It is CROSSWORD PUZZLES.... and other RIGHT BRAIN CREATIVITY EXERCISES....that can make us cross the sea of sorrow (...read words !).....
