Saying "Yes" to TV Again

I know what you are thinking. You are thinking, "Isn't TV bad for kids?" You may even feel guilty for allowing the little TV that you do or not admit to just how much TV you allow in your home. I completely understand. Even my teenage daughter locked out most of our cable channels. My children have designated times they are allowed to indulge in TV. I found that time cluttered with inappropriate commercials and new shows with inappropriate content. I began to wage war with my TV. Every time it was on, I would turn it off. I wanted more control than just blocking channels. I wanted to block shows on channels I allowed to be seen. Soon, the frustration caused me to wonder why I paid over $100 a month for cable when most of the time the TV and I were not on viewing terms. Finally, I cut the cable cord and kicked it to the curb.

My kids expressed great dissatisfaction with my decision. They missed the ability to watch their favorite shows. I know I didn't miss having to monitor every commercial and every new show for content I did not approve. Then one smart child said, "What about Netflix?" I hesitated. While, I enjoyed the omission of commercials and the ability to watch any favorite show or family movie on our own schedule, I did not want them riffling through the Netflix interface. The navigation was easy enough for a child but the content may not be something I want my children to see or accidentally click play on. My hesitation was unfounded as Netflix created Just for Kids Streaming!

With Just for Kids Streaming, we can enjoy TV again. I can allow my kids to select their favorite shows like; Curious George, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, My Little Pony, and many Hasbro, Disney Jr. and Cartoon Network favorites with just a click of the remote. Being a huge fan of Curious George, I was excited to sit and watch a few shows the other night with them. Honestly, I don't quite understand the excitement behind my children wanting me to sit down and watch a TV show with them. If I can be Mom of the Year by sitting down and watching Angelina Ballerina, I am happy to comply. Especially when Angelina Ballerina comes with a side of tea and cookies and ends with a mini performance by my little one. I earned even more cool mom points when I allowed them to watch Pocahontas on my iPad while their older brother played a video game with friends. No more fighting over the TV, with so many different devices to watch from like the computer, iPhone app, iPad app, or the TV. We also have full control over what and when we watch something. Weekly movie nights in my house are flexible due to my husband's unpredictable work schedule. It is nice to know Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue will be waiting for us when we finally settle down to watch. Of course, we like to throw in a little Batman and Beyond and even my teen will get a giggle out of Cars Toons: Mater’s Tall Takes.

We may not watch TV more than a few hours or so a week excluding family movie night but we always want it to be quality and commercial free. TV can be fun again....and doesn't have to eat into your budget. So, the TV and I are on viewing terms again. I love happy endings.

My Thoughts on My Home School Grades

I have a real problem with implementing anything else in my life that takes brainpower. I do. I admit it. If I am going to add one more aspect to my homeschooling it has to be easy to use. My Home School Grades qualifies in the easy to use department. The navigation is simple and the program is intuitive. You won't be wrestling this to the ground just to enter in a math quiz. 3 Ways to get Kids to Spring Clean

The time of year for spring cleaning is at hand. Break out the mops, dustpans, and garbage bags because it is time to clean and de-clutter. I always feel lighter after cleaning out a challenging closet or a kid's room. Probably one of the most challenging rooms to de-clutter are the kids' rooms. My kids find ways to hang onto the craziest things. With three girls in one room and a messy boy in another room, I suspect a lot of garbage bags will be used. This year, I am enlisting the kids to help out. Naturally, it isn't at the top of their list of spring activities. Luckily, this isn't my first rodeo so I have a few tricks up my sleeve.

Make it Fun. You do remember Mary Poppins, right? She made cleaning look fun and magical. You may not be able to make the room help clean itself but you can add in some fun. Make it a race and see which kid can clean the fastest. Set up laundry baskets and allow the kids to toss clothes in a basket for dirty clothes, clothes to donate, and clothes to sell. You can also set up baskets for sorting. Play some fun music and dance and clean at the same time.
Make Some Money. Kids love to do jobs if they can earn extra money. Some save up for a new bike while others just want some extra cash for candy money. Either way, earning a monetary reward is a great motivator. Have your kids gather up gently used clothes, books, and toys, to place in a garage sale. Your teen will love the ease of selling DVDs online. Nothing like the option of selling DVDs, CDs, and games online to encourage your teen to clean out his entertainment section.
Make it a Team Effort. No one wants to clean alone. Set up a system with a list of jobs and assign everyone something to complete. I used to allow my kids to pick three jobs from a list I made of different cleaning chores. Everyone tended to work harder since it was a group effort and they had definate jobs to complete.

10 Toys That Have Lasted in Our Home

Legos: The longest lasting toy through four kids and many painful random steps goes to Legos. All of my children love Legos and it bridges the age gap. The whole family can sit and build together. My husband's collection from his childhood is still played with today.
Miniture Plastic Character and Animal Toys: You know those tiny plastic toys you wonder why your kids keep around or carry with them. They come in a variety of name brands to dollar store specials but they are loved equally. We have a box filled with princesses, toy cars, safari animals, sea creatures, and more. The kids play with them outside in the dirt, in the sand, and even take them in the bath. It is story telling and imaginative play at its best.
Art Supplies: Paper, pencils, and paint in plentiful supply make for playful afternoons. Whatever the art medium the kids are fully engaged and the years never mute the drive for creativity.
Dollhouse: I almost hesitated to place my daughter's huge dollhouse in my living room. I now know that had I placed it in her bedroom she never would have come out. She is a teenager now and I am thinking of doing the same with her phone. Through the years, many little families have moved in and out of the dollhouse. It think for a few years it was played with on a daily basis. All my girls and even my son, when he was a toddler, have enjoyed this type of imaginative type of role playing.
Balls: Soccer, basketball, football, baseball, tennis, whatever ball exists we have it. Every summer we buy more of those plastic balls you find at the grocery store. Just throw a ball into the yard and its a party at our house.
Toy Phones: My oldest daughter has traded her toy phone in for a real one and my son traded his in for a video game controller. However, when they were young, both loved to carry around their silly plastic toys with buttons that made all sorts of unrealistic sounds. I almost wish my phone was as interesting. My two younger girls think toy phones are the thing to have in their purses. My four year old spends quite a bit of time talking on her phone and sometimes insisting we all hush while she has her coversation.
Bikes: Not sure you would consider it a toy but every one of my kids spent many fair weather hours riding bikes.
Board Games: We love playing games in our family. We don't mess around...even in Candyland.
Play Cookware: During those times the kids are not allowed to help in the kitchen or the cook is taking a much needed break, play cookware comes to the rescue.
Play Doh: I have to admit I love Play Doh as much as the kids. We clear the dining room table and begin creating amazing things only to mix and squish it so it packs back down in the container for the next time.

The Joy of Baby Toys

It appears to be baby shower season in my social circles. Have you noticed friends having babies tends to come in seasons? My youngest is going on 5 so the days of baby items and playthings are sadly over. The love of shopping for a baby never diminished so now I enjoy shopping for my friends. Seeing the variety of baby toys as I shop brings back sweet memories of my own children's baby years. Sometimes just seeing all the new dolls, games, rattles, and electronic novelties, makes me want to have another baby. Yes, folks, I want to have a baby to play with the toys and not look insane. While, looking for the perfect gift, and in my mind it is always a toy, even my preschooler gets a kick out of seeing all the toys for infants. I could hardly pull my kids away from seeing all the shiny trinkets of babyhood past. It was a fun stroll down memory lane for all of us. But do yourself a favor and buy online so that stroll doesn't take all afternoon with children whose sentimental nature want you to buy a Laugh and Play Love to Learn Puppy. Which by the way is one of my...I mean my kids...all time favorite toys and one I love to give as a gift. So, this year as I attend several baby showers I will be just as thrilled to see my friend open the gift as her baby will one day play with it.

What is the Waterproof Bible?

My Thoughts on the Waterproof Bible

Some years ago, pages of my bible were ripped out by the hands of a toddler. One time during bible study my daughter spilled her drink on her bible. These two incidents were met with eyes that stared struggling to compute the moment of horror. Torn and soaked pages are bad enough on any book but a bible just causes you to take pause and hang your head in sadness. Both events could have been avoided if only we had the Waterproof Bible.

It felt strange testing the bible against the elements. I had mishandling a book an a bible...well..that is unthinkable. However, my kids were excited to see if it could float and endure a muddy backyard. I had my doubts that it would hold up as nicely as it did. I thought it would be worse for the wear but instead once dried and clean retained a new appearance. Moreover, I love the smooth feel of the cover and the pages. The cover and pages sturdy and easily became clean after spending some time in the mud. It dries beautifully and fairly quickly if you sit it upright. However, the length of time to dry will depend on how wet it is. I am not sure if you can this in the picture but the water slides right off the book so it never gets super soaked.

The Waterproof bible comes in blue and the full bible version comes in camouflage. Makes the perfect gift for someone on the mission field or in the military. However, for those of us who stick around we can still enjoy not having to worry about dropping it, spilling something on it, getting it dirty, or falling into the hands of a toddler. You can still underline and highlight in it as usual.

In the end, the only downfall is the small print. However, the crisp clean pages make it easy to read. It is a nice size and lightweight making it perfect for packing or placing in a purse.

Makes a great gift for others or yourself!

"You inspire me."

"How do you do it all?"

"I know you are a much better homeschooler than me."

"Help me, I need your advice. You do this so much better than me."

"If only I could be a perfect homeschooler like you...you always have it together."

Yes, at one point or another these statements have been said to me. Me! I always wonder what the women behind those statements see when they look at me. I must remember to add "take mirror in for a refund" on my to-do list. In some strange turn of events, I became a role model for other homeschooling moms. When they look at me they see perfectly behaved children, a well scheduled day, impeccable lesson plans, and a house swept clean. Throw in some rainbows, unicorns, and cheesecake that causes weight loss, and you entered my perfect fantasy.

Through the years, some things I got right and many things I got wrong. Enter my home on any given day and you will see laundry baskets filled with clothes that have forgotten if they are clean or dirty. The kitchen boasts of hearty family meals evidenced by the dirty dishes still left for the morning elves. Sit down with a cup of coffee and allow my living room to recount children fighting or watching too much TV on stressful days. Bring a tissue and help my dining room table wipe off where the tears fell during a difficult reading lesson. Walk over to my school area and see lesson plan books half filled and curriculum abandoned because it was not a good fit. Open my closet doors you will won't even find a jean jumper but you will find clothes that wonder if they will ever be traded for sweats or PJs in the morning. If my walls could talk....surely my perceived perfection would be seen for what it is...a mere perception.

You see, my friend, the only thing that separates us is your perception and my experience. Experience is an excellent teacher but great lessons come through great pain. Yes, I have talents, abilities, and enough life lessons to get a few things right. So do you. Left in the dark, under piles of wishes, my own talents failed to grow. I learned that wishing for abilities I valued in others prevented me from growth. While, we can learn from each other, we are unique. We have unique families and circumstances that God gave us charge over. So, step aside Miss Susie Homemaker and Miss Super Homeschooler, I live to please God and raise those precious blessings in His stead until they are grown. It's okay to have a different schedule. It's okay that a curriculum didn't work for you. It's okay if you forgot to assign To Kill a Mockingbird to your high schooler. It's okay if your child is struggling to read. What isn't okay is wasting time comparing yourself to a situation that is not your own and that you honestly know little about. In wisdom, seek council from other moms. Eat from the meat of that advice but don't forget to spit out the bones. Cultivate your own talents rather than stumble around playing dress up in another woman's shoes.

Now, don't feel bad for looking up to other women or dismiss what I have said because you see your flaws. God puts others in our lives to teach us. Simply, do not demean your divine placement as mother of your children by trying to be someone else. There is wisdom in council if you are teachable and will allow God to work through you. Just don't forget to retain you because, friend, there is beauty in your brokenness.

My heavy eyes and aching body longed for a soft bed but determination forced me to keep going. The school year was ending and planning for the next year began. With a pile of books and highlighters as my late night companions, I began to devise a third grade scope and sequence. My planning is interrupted by a blessing. Blessings, it seems, have their own perfect time schedule. I came across Psalm 127.

Had you asked me if my work was for the Lord I would have said yes.

Had you asked me if I felt serving my family was serving the Lord I would have said yes.

Had you asked me if I felt joy to serve I would have given you a firm no.

My efforts came from me and not from allowing God to work in me. My late nights were due to a mismanaged and over-committed schedule because of a misguided desire to be super homeschool mom. After all, if God called me to homeschool then it would require hard work so I did the work. I had my marching orders and I marched….alone.

The joy in my heart faded alongside the steam from my teacup. I grew weary.

We work so hard to give our family the best. Of course there is nothing wrong with that unless you are doing it alone. Do not labor in vain. Allow the Lord to take you by the hand and guide your days. Otherwise, you family will get a faded mom who longs for a soft pillow. Give your burdens to the Lord so you can sleep. A lack of sleep can lead to illness and depression. At best we are lackluster and at worst we lose contact with joy. We end up drifting through our days. We end up feeling unappreciated. We end up feeling alone. We end up resentful.

I know there is much work to be done. I know you want to be what God intended you to be. I know you strive to tend to your family at all hours. But God did not intend for you to be weary. He did not intend for you to miss your life. He did not intend for you to go it alone. Give your burdens, your sorrow and your schedule over to the Lord. Answer your pillow and feel the warm embrace of your blanket and rest knowing the Lord will take care of it. Your family needs the best you not a faded you with heavy eyes and a pale heart.

There is enough time in the day. I promise you. God provided you all the time you need to accomplish His work. The trouble is determining God's work from the busyness of life. We fill our days with checking off a to-do list until it is finally time to fall into bed. Most of the time we can't even boast about checking it all off. Looking for opportunity we find distraction. Looking for purpose we find piles of laundry. Looking for meaning we find half eaten sandwiches in the toy box. Weariness and frustration become our companions as we attempt to build a home. The solution to redeeming your time is simply to simplify.

5 Ways to Redeem Your Time

Pray. Ask the Lord daily to order your steps each morning. Pray for wisdom in how you conduct your day. Always take time to pray over involving yourself in any activity, ministry, job, or program. Just because something sounds like an amazing opportunity does not mean it is the opportunity God has for you now.
Understand your role in the Lord. There are things you never need to wonder if you should put time into being a wife and a mother if God has blessed you with being a wife and a mother. You already know God has called you to fulfill these roles for His purpose. Everything else you do must reconcile with the roles God has chosen for you. So, it is safe to say that spending hours doing anything that causes you to neglect your husband or children is a bad idea. Of course, God gave you talents to use in other areas of life. Just remember there is a season for everything and keeping priorities in check will alleviate frustration and hurt feelings.
Will it profit my family? Ask yourself if something you are pursuing will profit your family. Achieving personal goals is not necessarily counterproductive to family life. In fact, pursuing personal goals can enhance your family and teach valuable lessons. However, if something comes your way that would take more than it gives it may not be the right season in your life for it.
Will my family ever have clean underwear again if I take this on? Saying no to drugs is easy but saying no to participating in anything is near impossible for many women. You are not required to say yes to every program, ministry, volunteer position, and activity. You see, that is why they ask...they can't tell. Be honest. No matter what those extra 20 pounds say, there is not enough of you to go around.
Pride, guilt, frustration. Do not do things out of pride, guilt or frustration because it will cause pride, guilt, and frustration.

Over a year ago, I made the wise decision to humbly accept a request to write a chapter for a book. I prayed over it, it fit with my roles and talents, it profited my family in a few ways, and it caused no pride, guilt, or frustration. As far as clean underwear, well, keeping up on laundry is still a skill I am learning. Being involved with The Heart of Simplicity, was a wonderful experience. Not only was I a part of a book which was sure to bless many women but I was richly blessed by getting to know the other authors better. The more I knew them the more I had to repeat "I am fearfully and wonderfully made....I am fearfully and wonderfully made." I almost wondered if they thought they were asking someone else to be on the project. These women are amazing women of faith! I hold the book dear and read it over every now and again either in whole or in part.

Receiving Your eBooks and eCourses

How do I receive my eBooks?

After your purchase was completed through Paypal, you should have received an automatic email containing the download links. This email goes directly to whichever email account is connected to your Paypal account.

Sometimes these emails wind up in spam folders, instead of in your inbox. Before you worry that you didn't get the email, make sure you take a good look at your spam folder first. It's a pain, but it happens.

How do I receive my eCourses?

In the email that you receive when you purchase the bundle, there will be special links and/or coupon codes that you will use to access your eCourses.

Downloading, Devices (eReaders, iPads, phones, etc.) and Other Technical Issues

How do I download the ebooks to my computer?

In the email that you receive, there will be links that you will use to download all of the book files. In total you will find around 70 download links, but within these links are all 90+ eBooks included in the sale.

Many of the books are sent as individual files and you will click on the specific link to download each book.

For some of the books, we have put them together into .zip files, with a handful of eBooks in each file (these are noted by the words "folder contains X number of ebooks"). You'll simply download each .zip file onto your computer, then you can open those files up and you'll find all of the books, which you can then save into the appropriate files on your computer.

Note that if you have an older or slower computer, or a slow internet connection, you will only want to start downloading one .zip file at a time to prevent the download from timing out. If your computer/internet connection is fast, you shouldn't have any issues with it.

Can I download them on my iPad, iPhone or any other eReader devices?

Yes, but there is a step you need to take first. Due to the size of these files, they can only be downloaded onto a regular desktop or laptop computer.

If you try to download directly onto any type of smaller device, the files will not download properly.

So first, open up your purchase email and download all files onto your regular computer. Once this is done, then you can proceed to transfer them to your devices.

For Kindle, you can use the "Send to Kindle" app. It works on PC or Mac. It can send files (once they are downloaded) to your Kindle app on your Apple device (ie. iPad or iPhone), Android device, or Kindle.

For other ebook readers, you'll have to do it however you normally do for that device. Usually this involves downloading them onto your computer first, then transferring the files via USB or WiFi to your device after they have been downloaded.

Can I put these eBooks on my Kindle/Nook/eReader?

Yes, you can! But, note that as these are being sold as .PDF files, and not in any specific eReader file type (each eReader uses a different file type, so it would be impossible for us to address all of the various devices and file types out there).

Because they are in .PDF format, some of them will look/work better on an eReader than others. Most eReaders can accommodate these files, they just might not be perfectly formatted to look as good as a file that was made specifically for that device (for example, the font might be slightly small), but most of them should be readable regardless.

For the ones that aren't, they can all still be read on your computer with the use of a Preview program, or whatever you usually use to view .PDF files.

What are .zip files and how do I open them?

We've used .zip files for some of the books simply because they compress files and there are just SO many files included in this bundle. This helps to make it a bit easier and faster to transfer and download the books, even though many of them are still individual downloads. 90+ eBooks is an awful lot!

For both Windows and Mac users, take a look at this very helpful WikiHow tutorial, which will show you exactly how to open .zip files, without a fancy program. As long as your computer is relatively new, you should be able to open the files up without the help of any extra software.

If you have an older computer without this capability, this tutorial gives some ideas of other unzipping software that you can download for free. One way to open .zip files is with a program called WinZip. You can download a trial version here for free.

How long will my download links work for?

The links in your purchase email will work for 4 weeks, which gives you plenty of time to make sure that you get all of your files downloaded and stored properly on your computer.

I would advise that you download them immediately, regardless of the 4 week deadline. It's easy to forget about this sort of thing, and I wouldn't want you to be disappointed to realize that your links no longer work!

You must be sure to download all files before June 1st! (This is important!)

Also, just in case you experience a download error, you have 9 download attempts to make sure that you get all of your books!

(You shouldn't need it, but if for some reason your download attempts run out before you have all of your books, simply email us at bundles@keeperofthehome.org, include your name and Paypal transaction number, and we'll give you more attempts.)

How do I access the bonus offers?

All of these details will be included in the email that you receive after you purchase your bundle. We will give you specific instructions on how to redeem each one of the bonus offers.

Most of them involve visiting the website of the specific company, and then accessing your bonus offer either through a special link we'll give you, or with a coupon code included in your email.

How long will the bonus offers be available?

All bonus offers will be available for 2 weeks after the sale ends, through May 18th. There will be no extensions on the bonus offers.

Do I need to pay shipping?

Mothering and Blogging: Finding the Right Fit

I squinted to make sense of scattered letters through the glare on my screen. Focused attempts at deciphering HTML became distracted by bursts of giggling from the other side of my window. Rejoicing from finally making a text box that scrolled, I missed a small excited voice asking me to "look at me". Dripping hair and sopping wet footsteps ran inside to beckon me to join their mini water park complete with a blow up monkey pool. Promising just five more minutes I shooed away wet fingers from my computer. Next I looked up and the time for sprinklers, popsicles, and water slides were over. I missed the opportunity to be part of that fun filled memory.

Maybe you are missing from memories you regret. Maybe you are struggling with finding a balance. Blogging can overwhelm you with branding, social media, finding a niche, promotions, and networking. Filing your fingers through your hair, you may wonder, how other bloggers find the time and how to achieve more pageviews. Every ounce of blogging takes time and dedication. The answer is simpler than we realize. Priorities, order, and the ability to let go and leave your blogging in God's hands. Honor the blessing of motherhood by being present in your children's lives. Yet, it can dishonor blessings if not confined in its proper place. If you use blogging as a means to provide in some way than give it the respect it deserves and set office hours. Explain to your family that this is what mommy does to help provide and she needs focused time to place the proper energy into it. If God provided you a platform, then by all means use it. However, God also gave you a role for His use; mother.

Make the commitment. Children do not interrupt blogging, blogging interrupts mothering.

Mind Your Records with Homeschool Minder

What is Homeschool Minder?

It is intuitive and interactive as it tracks grades, achievements, skills learned, lesson plans, assignments, and your calendar. If it involves homeschooling it goes in Homeschool Minder. Yes, you can input field trips. Yes, you can input appointments. Oh yes, even days at co-op. It is the only record keeping system you will need. Really...it is that exhaustive. You may be overwhelmed at first but navigation is easy and bypassing anything you don't feel you need is simple and won't get in your way. If you state requires attendance or you submit a portfolio a record keeping system is essential. You will not find one as streamlined and exhaustive as Homeschool Minder.

An Affordable Homeschool Record Keeping Software

The cost of the program is $5.99 a month for unlimited students, unlimited assignments, unlimited lesson plans, and all reports. Or you can chose to pay $49 a year for all that good stuff. I spend more than that buying lesson plan books, calendars, date books, and more lesson plan books, that I never actually use. No more dealing with paper or crossing things ..it's all online, neat, and clean.

The Calendar

The calendar is easy to use and is a lifesaver for keeping attendance and keeping up with a busy homeschool life. Here you add in appointments, assignments, chores, skills, and field trips. You even have the ability to drag and drop. Who doesn't love drag and drop? I always feel so modern and techy when I drag and drop. Don't forget to add chores! Yes, that's right, no more chore charts.

Lesson Plans

You have the ability to keep detailed records of course lists, books, resources, and grading scale. Assigning lessons almost becomes fun, at least for the teacher, and you can add it right to the calendar.

Grade Book

If you keep track of grades or GPA then the grade book will make it a breeze. You pick your own grading scale, add in the grades, and Homeschool Minder does the rest.

My Thoughts About Homeschool Minder

While I crave organization, it is very hard for me to keep up with it. The result is half used or unused lesson plan books and a frustrated mom. I had little hope that Homeschool Minder would help me. I knew it was a great product but would it actually work for ME? Well, let's be honest, nothing works unless you use it. So, it becomes a question of how easy is it to use. Since I can access it on my computer, which I access daily, so it wins the proximity battle. It is easy to navigate making practical use simple, so now, half the battle is won. Seriously, I am so pathetic that grabbing a pen and datebook only happens a few time a week...if that. Oh how I LOVE lesson plan books and datebooks but I use them in spurts. With Homeschool Minder, I can sit and input all my children's information, lessons, field trips, etc. for the whole year, from my computer. Of course you have to go back and add things in as the year goes on but my entire plan can be inputted right away. Since everything from grades to chores goes in ONE place it simplifies my life and begs to be seen. It clears my desk and my mind. I can't even use the excuse that the dog ate my datebook since it is a web-based program.

Now, let me warn you that if you are like me, you may get overwhelmed. Homeschool Minder is serious about record keeping. The record keeping system is meticulous and detailed. Two things I only strive to be. However, if you just meet it halfway it will take you the rest of the way. Take it bit by bit and soon you will appear to the world to be a super duper record keeper. Seriously, I even impressed my husband. In fact, that is really all I needed to say, right? Homeschool Minder...even my husband was impressed with my mad organizing skills. I think that should be their new tag line. We never have to mention that all I did was input the information and Homeschool Minder did the rest, do we?

The failure in this area has not prevented me from seeking a new planner. I am still under some misguided belief that a planner will change my world. Now, for those who plan much better than I, you can tailor make the planner to suit dates that work for you. When I finally took the time to read the "user's guide" I realized the treasure I held in my hands.

The system's purpose is teach a child to become independent and manage time. Since, I need the same, I figured my kids and I could learn together. I can't say enough good things about these planners but that is because they are just planners but a system that smooths out your days and weeks.

Our Thoughts on Online Learning

We signed up for Wonders of Creation. A lovely class that taught creationism while students put together a lapbook on the subject. The class was fun, well organized, and provided a new experience for my daughter. I have to admit that until that class I never engaged in lapbooking. In fact, that was the reason I chose that class. Not only did the class provide great instruction and teaching on making the lapbook and creationism, it kept me honest. I promised my daughter we would do a lapbook but it simply never happened. An online homeschool class made me accountable while lifting stress from adding one more activity to subject to my school schedule. I think we will sign up for more classes for electives and a few subjects I do not feel confident teaching like foreign language. Online learning opened up more possibilities and CurrClick Live made it so easy. I admit I was not excited about an online class but the experience proved me wrong. In my years as a homeschooling mom, writer and curriculum reviewer, I am always faced with moms who want a curriculum focused on training up their children to display godly character and virtue. What We Thought

We Choose Virtues is my favorite and most recommended character training curriculum on the market. The virtue characters are adorable, the flash cards are irresistible, the simple method is effective, and it only takes minutes a day. The program expertly breaks down the definition of character traits so children can easily understand expectations. Implementation is so easy you can start the minute you open the box. The brilliance is found in the program's simplicity. Simple for the student to understand and simple for the teacher to implement. You can use the program to enhance current studies or use it as a stand alone. We Choose Virtues offers plenty of variety and a la carte items to customize it just for your family or ministry needs. The affordable prices are icing on the cake.

I used the flash cards and coloring pages with my 7 and 4 year old daughters. While, they are a bit younger than the original recommendation, I found great success. I previously used the program with my older children when they were around the recommended age and it fit beautifully. I would not use the program on a child under 4 or older than 10. I did allow my 13 year old to read the cards and demonstrate proper behavior to his younger sisters. I found that reinforced proper character in my older child. The verses associated on each card made great memory verses for all the kids. You can truly make it a family program.

I am going to be real honest here....I once considered creating a character curriculum. Then I found We Choose Virtues. I could not add to or improve upon the curriculum so I shelved the idea.

Our Thoughts

Simply put, the program is effective and fun for the child. The student side is filled with games and activities to encourage reading fluency. The parent side of the program offers detailed student evaluations and guided videos to ensure your success. Reading Horizons has every interest and desire to see you succeed. In that vain, they offer an array of guided instructions, videos, and amazing customer service, to ensure success. You are never alone if you use Reading Horizons. This is especially important if you have never taught reading from an Orton-Gillingham method or you have a struggling reader or dyslexic child. It is no secret that this program is one I highly recommend.

Now, here is the skinny on the program. While navigation of the parent side will take some getting used to the features, such as the detailed evaluations and support, make it a cut above the rest. The student side has adorable graphics to engage your student without being overloaded with intensity. The images are colorful yet calming which makes it easy to focus on the lesson. Here is what you really need to understand...if your child is an emerging reader then the software alone may be just what you need. However, if your child is struggling or dyslexic, you may want to consider purchasing the printed teacher guided instructions. My child is dyslexic and the pace of the software was a bit fast at times and lacked explanation. With the teacher instructed materials, the lessons are in sync with the software and you can easily help your child navigate or offer additional practice. My child learned best when I used the physical materials and allowed her use of the software as a supplement. However it works best for you the combination of the two sources is gold for a struggling or dyslexic student.

I want to emphasize that Reading Horizons is not a program suited only for struggling or dyslexic students. While the program is effective for students with special needs, it is quite effective for emerging readers as well. The method is sound for teaching all readers how to read.
