Santa Swap 2009

I was so happy to be able to participate in the Santa Swap over at The Mommy Files. I love getting involved with these, especially because you get to discover such great people! My Santa swap buddy was Becky at FranticMommy. I was so excited when I opened her box. I immediately saw chocolate, and I'm pretty proud to say that I was able to restrain myself form eating it long enough to go through the rest of her goodies. There was a yummy candle, a totally cute snowman figurine, a beautiful hand-painted Minnesota magnet. She fed my boyfriend and me with a super tasty beer bread mix. we ate it with baked potato soup the first night it got really cold here, it was awesome! She also fed my office supply habit (pens. post-its... seriously, I have an addiction). Of course, I'd like to show you pictures, but my ~~beloved~~ ancient camera decided to stop working. Maybe Santa will bring me a new one...

I (try to) follow a glycemic index diet, and the hardest part for me is forgoing dessert and sweet snacks. I also try to avoid artificial ingredients,especially artificial sweeteners. Yes! It reminded me of the smell of my favorite smoothie shop - yum! The taste was just as good as the scent. They were full of flavor, just sweet enough, and perfectly chewy. There was no chalky or artificial taste at all. The recommended serving is 2, but I ended up eating four. I didn't feel bad about it at all though, with only 80 calories, no net carbs, and 5 grams of fiber.

The next day I decided to try the Cocoa-Liscious. I'm so into chocolate, so I was really excited to try these. They had a really strong cocoa flavor. They're definitely not as sweet as most prepackaged cookies, but I don't like overly sweet foods anyway. These would be great if you like more of a semi-sweet chocolate taste. They weren't as chewy as the strawberry banana, and were a bit dry for me. The next day I decided to pop them in the microwave for a few seconds, and that helped a lot. My favorite was when I whipped up some cream (no sugar) and put a dollop (read: gigantic spoonful) of it on some heated cookies. For the rest of them I had some grand plans of making a low-carb trifle or cheesecake with them, but I went with the "eat one whenever I wanted to shove something sweet in my mouth" route.

Hi all! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Anybody braved the Black Friday craziness? I'll occasionally go out and pick up a few deals on Black Friday, but this year I stayed at home. Cold weather + rain = me staying inside most of the day in my PJs and eating turkey sandwiches. I did find a few good gifts up for grabs online, so I didn't miss out too much. I'm almost finished decorating the tree. I'm still searching for a star, I think I'll start a quest on Etsy to find the perfect one. At this point I've gotten about half of the gifts done. this year I started early - usually I'm out there on Christmas Eve finishing up most of my shopping. This year I seem to be more excited for the holidays than most years. I've got the Christmas music playing, my wrapping center set up, and I'm already starting my endless holiday baking.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! The Twitterpeek (which only does Twitter... for the low, low price of $200?!) is apparently not going to be the best buy, even for the most avid Twitterholic on your list.

I've heard a lot of people are searching for the best price on the unofficial "game of the year", the New Super Mario Bros for the Wii. The cheapest I've found is on Amazon at $46.99 (I've already ordered a couple as gifts for the family Wii-addicts!). It's a few bucks cheaper than pretty much everywhere else, plus you get free shipping. I have a thing for t-shirts. Plain t-shirts, graphic t-shirts, band t-shirts, and, of course, funny t-shirts. So I was definitely excited to be able to try out two t-shirts from Crazy Dog T-shirts and Nacho Mama Tees. From Crazy Dog, I received the Shop Smart T Shirt. I'm a lover of horror movies, and Army of Darkness is definitely one of my favorites. The tee is super soft, the colors are really vibrant, and it fits true to size. I also tried the Oceanic Airline t-shirt, one of my absolute favorites from Nacho Mama Tees. This is the perfect shirt to gear up for final season of Lost next February. (I'm so sad it's ending, but I'm so ready to find out all of the unanswered, freaky island mysteries.) I, like so many other people, suffer from indoor and outdoor allergies. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America estimates that 50 million Americans have allergies, 40 million of those people indoor/outdoor allergies. From the AAFA website:

Indoor and Outdoor Allergies – (Allergic rhinitis; seasonal/perennial allergies; hay fever; nasal allergies) Approximately 40 million Americans have indoor/outdoor allergies as their primary allergy. (Many people with allergies usually have more than one type of allergy.) Approximately 10 million people are allergic to cat dander, the most common pet allergy. The most common indoor/outdoor allergy triggers are: tree, grass and weed pollen; mold spores; dust mite and cockroach allergen; and, cat, dog and rodent dander.

Fun stuff, huh? Until a few years ago, I had your standard seasonal allergies -- a little sniffling and sneezing in the spring mostly. But all of a sudden, BAM! itchy, red allergy eyes, violently sneezing whenever I went near the garden, and having to dust and vacuum about 5 times as much as normally. I never found out the exact reason this happened, but I do know that I've been actively trying to combat the symptoms ever since. I've had bad reactions to most OTC and presription allergy meds, so my main focus became keeping the house really clean, maintaining proper humidity levels, and avoiding the outdoors on "bad allergy" days.

100% Pure Review

I recently had the chance to review some cosmetics from a wonderful company called 100% Pure. I've been trying to switch to all natural or organic beauty products, which isn’t always easy, especially regarding cosmetics. It seems that natural cosmetics’ effectiveness tend to be hit or miss. I was so pleased to find that 100% Pure products are an absolute hit! Their products have been feautured in many magazines, such as Elle, Self, CosmoGirl, Latina, Redbook, and Real Simple.

I was able to try two of their fruit pigmented make-up products, the lip gloss and the lip & cheek tint. The lip gloss ($13), which I tried in Sheer Pomegranate Wine, which is my new favorite lip color. It’s made of 83% Vitamin E, and the rest of the ingredients are fruit pigments. It’s not sticky or oily, it just feels moisturizing. It lasts a pretty long time, but I find myself putting it on pretty often just because it feels so good! The color is fairly sheer, and it makes a great daytime lip color. It also looks great paired over a lipstick or lip tint. It’s a great lip gloss for those who don’t want to look like they made out with a greasy piece of pizza or a pot of glitter.

I was a little apprehensive after opening the lip and cheek tint ($15), which I got in Peach Glow. The color and scent reminded me of the Barbie play makeup set I got as a little girl. When I first put it on, I thought it was a bit shiny at first, and I thought it would make my face look greasy. As I continued putting on the rest of my makeup on, it seemed to settle in, and I ended up looking like what I was going for – having a healthy glow! Since I’m so fair, I have a tough time with powder and mineral cheek colors, and this was great for my skin tone. It doesn’t make my face sticky, and it doesn’t feel like it’s going to run off. It’s a little light as a lip tint, but it does add a natural-looking hint of color. It’s 100% natural, made of fruit pigments, Vitamin C, Shea Butter, Grapeseed Oil, Cocoa Butter, Honey Beeswax, and Vitamin E. Overall, the Peach Glow lip and cheek tint would be a great way to get that perfect glow, both in the winter and the summer.

I was also able to try the Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream ($19). I always have the dreaded under eye circles, and when my allergies are kicking in, I get major puffiness too. After using it just a few days, I noticed that the dark circles were visibly reduced. An added bonus is the scent. Since it’s made with organic green tea and organic green tea (among other organic and natural products), it has a wonderful scent. It has a kind of chocolate-y coffee scent that really makes you want to put it on every day!

100% Pure also offers a huge line of bath and body products, in addition to their cosmetics and skin care lines. Love coffee? There’s an Organic Dark Chocolate Mocha Body Scrub. Got dry winter skin? Try the Blood Orange Shea Body Butter. There are so many products that sound delicious, and there’s even a line for kids!

These products are made without the nasty chemical preservatives you usually find in beauty products. If you’re worried about how long the products last without those preservatives, don’t! The reason these products can be made without chemical preservatives is that they’re made without water and air, the two elements needed for bacterial growth. There’s a simple number on the packaging that indicates how long you should keep them. Best of all, the products are 100% natural, 100% vegan, and gluten free!
