Ophelia Dahl's Union Medal 2006 Acceptance Speach

<itunes:author>Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York</itunes:author>

Hello, and welcome to another episode in the podcast of Union Theological Seminary in New York City. We are back with more treats. This episode features Union Medal winner Ophelia Dahl.

For over twenty years, Ophelia Dahl has worked as an advocate for the health and rights of the poor. Ms. Dahl first traveled to impoverished central Haiti in 1983 to volunteer at a small eye care clinic. In Haiti she met Paul Farmer, and since then they have worked to bring health care to the destitute sick, beginning with a few small villages in Haiti's Central Plateau. The principle behind their work has been simple: everyone, whether poor or affluent, deserves to benefit from the same high standard of medical care.

Partners In Health (PIH), a non-profit organization based in Boston, Mass., and dedicated to addressing health inequities and social injustice, was formally founded in 1987. Ms. Dahl, a co-founder and trustee of PIH, currently serves as its Executive Director. She has also served as chair of the PIH board since 1993. Under her leadership, PIH has forged groundbreaking successes in treating the diseases of the poor and promoting health and human rights in areas of the world that have been ravaged by political conflict, poverty, and international neglect. Today, the effectiveness of PIH's community-based model has been lauded around the world, prompting an explosion in requests to the organization to share its expertise and to play a greater role in global health advocacy.

Paul Farmer's Union Medal 2006 Acceptance Speach

<itunes:author>Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York</itunes:author>

Hello, and welcome to another episode in the podcast of Union Theological Seminary in New York City. It's been a long time since we last posted an episode. Fear not, faithful podcast listeners, we're back with Union Medal winner Paul Farmer.

Medical anthropologist and physician Paul Farmer has dedicated his life to treating some of the world's poorest populations, in the process helping to raise the standard of health care for the destitute sick everywhere.

A founding director of Partners In Health, an international organization that provides direct health care services and undertakes research and advocacy activities on behalf of those who are sick and living in poverty, Dr. Farmer and his colleagues have successfully challenged the policymakers and critics who claim that quality health care is impossible to deliver in resource-poor settings.

Dr. Farmer has worked in infectious-disease control for nearly two decades and is a world-renowned authority on AIDS and tuberculosis. He is an attending physician in infectious diseases and Associate Chief of the Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and medical director of the Clinique Bon Sauveur Hospital in rural Haiti, focusing on diseases that disproportionately afflict the poor. Along with his colleagues at the Brigham and in the Program in Infectious Disease and Social Change at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Farmer has pioneered community-based treatment strategies for infectious diseases (including HIV/AIDS and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB)) in resource-poor settings. His work in Haiti has taught him that poverty, inequality, and political turmoil lead inevitably to poor health outcomes among the vulnerable, and this belief fuels his scholarly, clinical, advocacy, and charitable activities.

Hello, and welcome to another episode in the podcast of Union Theological Seminary in New York City. It's been a long time since we last posted an episode, and we've received many inquiries into the possibility that our podcast needed to be eulogized. But fear not, faithful podcast listeners, we're back this week (and again next week) with a two-part series featuring Dr. Cornel West, who returned to Union recently to deliver the fourth Barry Ulanov Memorial Lecture.

This episode, the first in a two-part series, will feature the introductions of Dr. West and Dr. West's lecture, titled “The Socratic, the Prophetic, and the Democratic.” In next week's episode we'll bring you the fascinating question-and-answer period that followed this lecture.

Dr. West served on Union’s faculty from 1977 to 1984 and again in 1987-88, when he was Professor of Philosophy and Christian Practice. He is currently Class of 1943 University Professor of Religion at Princeton University.

One of America’s most gifted and provocative public intellectuals, Dr. West’s writing, speaking, and teaching weave together the American traditions of the Black Baptist Church, progressive politics, and jazz.

This lecture series honors the memory of Barry Ulanov, a professor of English at Barnard College for more than three decades and a prolific author. After retiring from Barnard in 1988, Dr. Ulanov taught at Union Theological Seminary in the program of Psychiatry and Religion.

Preceding Dr. West's lecture, we'll be hearing introductions to this event and our esteemed speaker from Union President Joseph Hough, Professor Ann Belford Ulanov, and Academic Dean Euan Cameron.

Here now: The 2006 Barry Ulanov Memorial Lecture featuring Dr. Cornel West.

A few more brief technical points before we get things started. If you are listening to us today in iTunes, this will be our first enhanced podcast, containing pictures of the event as well as chapters. Isaiah 6: 8-11

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’ And he said, ‘Go and say to this people:
“Keep listening, but do not comprehend;

Make the mind of this people dull,

so that they may not look with their eyes,

and comprehend with their minds,
 and turn and be healed.’
Then I said, ‘How long, O Lord?’ And he said:
‘Until cities lie waste
