<p>You may have determined that you have a false negative view of wealthy people - an impression that comes from the opinions of others. You may have heard things growing up like &#8220;we&#8217;re not like them&#8221; or &#8220;we have to earn our money.&#8221; Or the bias may have been much more subtle, even non-verbal; body language, tone of voice, affected speech patterns.</p>
<p>In any case, you may have come away thinking&#8230;<strong>believing</strong>&#8230;that wealthy people are unethical, immoral, valueless, mean, snobby,  frivolous and certainly &#8220;not like you.&#8221;</p>
<p>If that is your core belief, it would be next to impossible to become one of them <strong>unless you shift your impression of who they are and what they&#8217;re like.</strong></p>
<p>If you choose to have a favorable impression of the wealthy, you will meet with disapproval from those whose opinion is different.</p>
<p>When you begin to acquire wealth, there will be those that love you who will disapprove of your motives, denigrate your approach, and ridicule your dreams. Not out of any sense of malice, that&#8217;s just what <strong>they</strong> have been taught to believe.</p>
<p>To change what <strong>you</strong> have been taught, you&#8217;ll need to do a little research.</p>
<p>Make opportunities to meet and talk with wealthy people - church committees, networking groups, even out walking the dog. Each interaction will give you a better understanding of who they really are - not who you <em>think</em> they are. Like any demographic group, you will find all kinds, but you&#8217;ll begin to meet people who are <em>just like you</em> and with whom you&#8217;d like to associate.</p>
<p>Next, get ahold of the book &#8220;<a title="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=B99pN&amp;m=1fTTQQCHMeXuw9&amp;b=fmYiPNrHc9iriyZik1fSYg" href="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=B99pN&amp;m=1fTTQQCHMeXuw9&amp;b=fmYiPNrHc9iriyZik1fSYg" target="_blank">The Millionaire Next Door</a>&#8221; or &#8220;<a title="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=B99pN&amp;m=1fTTQQCHMeXuw9&amp;b=t8DFjijmV55FFvp6iFkrGQ" href="http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=B99pN&amp;m=1fTTQQCHMeXuw9&amp;b=t8DFjijmV55FFvp6iFkrGQ" target="_blank">Millionaire Women Next Door</a>&#8221; by Thomas J. Stanley. It will give you a clear and fact-based view of who the truly wealthy are in this country. Not the people living millionaire <em>lifestyles</em> and who are in debt up to their earlobes, but those that have sustaining cash flows and assets. You will be surprised and delighted.</p>

<p>Find out who the wealthy really are so you can determine if you truly want to be one of them. If you continue to aim at a goal that your beliefs say is wrong, you will do nothing but frustrate yourself. Do your homework so you&#8217;ll know for sure that wealth is something you <strong>really</strong> want.</p>

<p>Are you <strong>sure</strong> you want to be wealthy? We will always find a way to get what we want so it&#8217;s critical that you know exactly what that is and that you are sure you really want it.</p>
<p>Come on, Ann, who wouldn&#8217;t want to be rich?</p>
<p>Well, lots of people actually. Everyone has a money story and a bias toward attaining certain levels of wealth. <strong>We have each grown up with an impression of wealthy people. That impression may not be founded in reality, but in opinion.</strong></p>
<p>To determine your true impression, try this exercise:</p>
<ol>
<li>Determine <strong>your</strong> definition of wealthy. Write down the minimum amount of monthly income a person would make, either through salary or investments, in order to &#8220;be wealthy.&#8221;</li>
<li>Make a list of every wealthy person you actually know.</li>
<li>Make a list of 10 wealthy people you know of.</li>
<li>Write 3 adjectives next to each name to describe them.</li>
<li>On a scale of 1 - 10, rate each person on <strong>your impression</strong> of their morality, their integrity, and their generosity (1=&#8221;bad&#8221; and 10=&#8221;good&#8221;).</li>
<li>Write a paragraph about how you think you will change if you were to become wealthy and how that would be good or bad.</li>
<li>Lastly, list everyone who would not approve of you becoming wealthy and why.</li>
</ol>
<p>You should begin to see a trend or pattern emerge. You have very definite views of wealthy people - what they&#8217;re like, whether they deserve their wealth, and whether or not you&#8217;d like to be viewed in the same way. If your impression is negative, it is unlikely you will ever become wealthy <strong>because you really don&#8217;t want to</strong> - you don&#8217;t want to be <strong>like them.</strong></p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve discovered that you have a false negative view of wealthy people, I&#8217;ll address how to change that in my next post&#8230;</p>
<p>Now go be a millionaire!<br />

Successful people are not only able to recognize them, but also <strong>expect</strong> them to show up, <strong>count</strong> on them showing up, and <strong>seek them out</strong> when not enough show up.</p>
<p>They make it a point to look for opportunities all around them, knowing full well that they are there just waiting to be taken.</p>
<p>If you operate your life or your business from a mindset of scarcity; if you believe that opportunities are hard to come by, then you are either not looking in the right places, or you have not yet honed your ability to be creative about where they might lie. Let&#8217;s say I told you,</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;When you go out this afternoon, one of the women who will cross your path, is right now, this very minute, looking for what you have to offer. It&#8217;s guaranteed and it&#8217;s a sure thing.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>What is your response? I suspect you&#8217;d be headed out the door pretty shortly.</p>
<p>Opportunities are there all the time - <strong>we just prefer to have a guarantee</strong> before we pursue them. It doesn&#8217;t work that way. Opportunities are &#8220;invisible&#8221; and pass you right by if you&#8217;re out hunting for guarantees.</p>
<p>If you think with a scarcity mentality, you will bemoan the idea that you can&#8217;t find any guarantees. When you think the way a successful person thinks, you will actively <strong>seek</strong> daily opportunities because you <strong>expect</strong> them to be there. That&#8217;s because they are.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m on the island of Kauai, sitting in a cottage at the edge of the sea on the north shore during a fabulous wind and rain storm. The waves are pounding the lava laden beach and the wind whistles through the jalousie windows.</p>
<p>We hiked along the Na Pali coastline this morning, through thick running mud and along surprise waterfalls. Each step was chosen with precision.</p>
<p>During that hike, I thought about you. And how each of those precarious steps, sometimes just inches from a straight drop to the cliffs below, were like the decisions we make in our businesses.</p>
<p>The balance of fun and safety was fluid.<br />
Equally so between risk and caution.</p>
<p>It took a few hours to reach our destination several miles in and along the jungle coastline. We welcomed a simple lunch by a rushing river that started at the top of this rain forest, the wettest spot on the planet.</p>
<p>What I learned along the way, which also made me think about business, was this:</p>
<ul>
<li>use the right tools</li>
<li>don&#8217;t carry unnecessary baggage (travel light and be ready to move!)</li>
<li>take time to be inspired along the way with surprise miracles and magical moments</li>
<li>don&#8217;t hold anyone back - it&#8217;s o.k. to let others pass you along the trail</li>
<li>be true to your own pace</li>
<li>rest often but don&#8217;t lose your momentum</li>
<li>and travel with people you love.</li>
<li>And above all, don&#8217;t quit because the final destination is worth every muddy step.</li>
</ul>
<p>Back now watching the surf I can feel every muscle gleeful for the exertion.<br />
My family naps and reads.<br />
The majesty of one of God&#8217;s most inspiring and heavenly spots on earth is a new entry into my lifelong collection of memories.</p>
<p>And I am grateful for having done something most people never do and having learned more about what I am truly capable.</p>

You&#8217;ve heard the term before. It refers to the invisible limit placed on women in the corporate world. Given the political structure and the nature of power struggles, territoriality, and primal instincts that bleed into the corporate world, a woman&#8217;s rise to a level commensurate with her worth will be a long fought battle that may not be entirely won.</p>
<p>But you&#8217;re not in the corporate world. Halleluiah, there&#8217;s no glass ceiling!</p>
<p><em>Or is there?</em></p>
<p>No one from your company has ever told you, &#8220;sorry, but that&#8217;s your limit. You&#8217;re not allowed to make any more than that.&#8221;</p>
<p>Never.</p>
<p>Not once.</p>
<p>The message you get from the corporate office is, &#8220;go ahead, make all the money you want.&#8221; They don&#8217;t believe you have a glass ceiling. The only one that exists <em>is in your head</em>.</p>
<p>Time and again I meet women who have given themselves their own glass ceiling. They limit their earning potential by assuming that they <strong>couldn&#8217;t possibly deserve to be wealthy</strong>.</p>
<p>They falsely assume that to be wealthy you must be highly educated, or have trained for years in a profession, or risen slowly through the ranks, or paid their dues, or know someone powerful, or be born into it, or marry into it, or invented a cure for some disease, or have an MBA, or somehow have done something amazing in order to deserve the <strong>right</strong> to be wealthy.</p>
<p>In fact, if you don&#8217;t learn another thing about your business, know that you can become enormously wealthy just by sharing your product and the opportunity and asking, &#8220;how do you like that?&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s that simple.</p>
<p>Really.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t make it harder than it is. It doesn&#8217;t have to hurt and you don&#8217;t have to pay years and years of dues. <strong>You have the right to be wealthy so stop behaving like your life is a dress rehearsal. </strong></p>
<p>If you justify an earning limit for yourself or rationalize why you can&#8217;t exceed it, you have given yourself an invisible glass ceiling. The simple fact is that <strong>you are not limited to any number</strong>.</p>
<p>There is no limit, no ceiling, no point at which someone is going to tap you on the shoulder and say, &#8220;just who do you think you are? You don&#8217;t deserve to have an unlimited income, now give it all back. &#8221;</p>
<p>You&#8217;ve reached adulthood and now have an opportunity <strong>unlike most of the women in the world</strong>, one that does not limit your income and does not have a glass ceiling.</p>
<p>If you continue to behave as if there is a limit, invisible or not, you will not reach your potential and you will doom yourself to accepting something lower than you deserve.</p>
<p>Choose today to <strong>stop waiting</strong> for someone to promote you, give you the keys to the corner office, give you a transfer to a more prestigious position, or give you <strong>permission to out-earn the CEO</strong> - you have the power to do all that, you just have to say, &#8220;yes.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now go be a millionaire!<br />

Well over ninety percent are &#8220;self made&#8221; millionaires, meaning they didn&#8217;t inherit their money, they earned it. Of the million-dollar businesses in the United States, <strong>less than six percent are owned by women</strong>.</p>
<p>Time to make some changes.</p>
<p>Women need wealthy women role models to follow. They need to see that they are <strong>not required to live at the income level of the man they marry</strong>. They need to know that they can be the ones who determine their own level of wealth for themselves and for their family.</p>
<ul>
<li>What good could you do in the world if you were wealthy?</li>
<li>How much more influence would you have in encouraging other women?</li>
<li>How many more lives could you enrich because of the platform you would automatically inherit by being wealthy?</li>
</ul>
<p>Think of the ways that you contribute now to someone else&#8217;s life - your family members, friends, volunteer groups, school, church, or team. <strong>Would being wealthy allow you to be more generous and giving or less?</strong> Would being wealthy be an inspiration to those around you and give them a track to run on or would it have no effect at all?</p>
<p>Being wealthy will help you do more good in the world.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t know how or you don&#8217;t care, you may just be working so you can acquire more things. If that&#8217;s the case, what&#8217;s the point? One of the most compelling reasons to become wealthy is so that you are <strong>less of a burden</strong> to others and more of a lifeline to those who need you to show them the way. Being poor means your circle of influence is very small. <strong>Becoming wealthy in order to widen your circle of influence and enhance more lives is an honorable goal.</strong></p>
<p>Now go be a millionaire!</p>
