𝙅𝙚𝙢 𝙆𝙧𝙞𝙯𝙯𝙖 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙚ñ𝙤 and 𝙀𝙧𝙞𝙘 𝙅𝙤𝙝𝙣 𝙐𝙗𝙖, third-year nursing students from the University of Cebu–Banilad, assisted a man who collapsed along a roadside in Tabok, Mandaue City on the evening of February 11, providing immediate assessment and care while waiting for emergency responders.

Parreño recalled that at around 9:00 p.m., after arriving near a McDonald’s branch from school, she noticed a crowd gathered around a man in distress. When Uba asked if she had a blood pressure apparatus, she promptly retrieved her kit and began checking the man’s vital signs. She observed that he was unable to move his right arm and that the right side of his face was drooping. The man shared that he had collapsed while driving after losing sensation in his right leg. As they waited for the ambulance, his child arrived and revealed that similar symptoms had occurred earlier that morning. Despite the uncertainty of the situation, Parreño remained composed, positioning the patient properly and monitoring him until responders arrived.

Dean Mercy Milagros Apuhin from the College of Nursing stated, “I am deeply proud of our nursing students, who have once again shown that compassion is at the heart of genuine health care. In the face of challenging circumstances, they responded with empathy kindness and professionalism - embodying the essential values our college stands for. Their actions remind us that Nursing is not only a science but also a calling to serve humanity with dignity and care.”

The incident underscores the value of preparedness and presence of mind in emergencies. Parreño’s response reflects how training, awareness, and willingness to act can make a critical difference.

Molding Resilient Learners through the Magic of Reading

After eight ( 8 ) months of program implementation, the officials of Barangay Looc in Mandaue City, alongside the College of Teacher Education of the University of Cebu – Lapulapu and Mandaue, Ceasar M. Cabahug Elementary School (CMCES) teachers, students and parents, NGO Partners, and UCLM Community Awareness, Relations, and Extension Services (CARES) Director, Dr. Richie Montebon, commemorated the success of the Looc READS (Reading Engagement and Development Service) program at the University of Cebu – Lapulapu and Mandue Auditorium.

Spearheaded by Looc Barangay Captain Allan C. Siazon and Councilor Raul “Skipper” F. Cabahug IV, the Chairman for Education, together with former CMCES Principal Rosa Rossini E. Comedia, University of Cebu – Lapulapu and Mandaue (UCLM) College of Teacher Education Chairperson, Ms. Elna B. Sabornido, and Community Extension Coordinators, Mr. Vernel A. Garma and Mr. Gendolf L. Niepes, the program was launched in October 2022 with hopes of addressing the growing issue of the reading literacy gap among the 295 identified frustrated readers from Cesar M. Cabahug Elementary School (CMCES), brought about by the pandemic-induced school closures nationwide.

With their collective effort, University of Cebu – Lapulapu and Mandaue (UCLM) College of Teacher Education Chairperson, Ms. Elna B. Sabornido and the Community Extension Coordinators, Mr. Gendolf L. Niepes and Mr. Vernel A. Garma proudly reported during the culminating activity that, through thorough evaluation, students who were identified as frustrated readers before were now independent readers.

Ms. Sabornido and Mr. Niepes added that “adunay pag-asa sa pagbasa” (“there is hope in reading”), for teaching a child to read, it opens a gateway that makes all other learning possible — championing children, families, and communities.

The Looc Council, Chairman of Education, Hon. Raul F. Cabahug IV, along with other key partners, also shared their feedback and messages of support for the reading program, expressing that the program must be continued to help and touch the lives of even more learners in the community.

During the culmination, learners of CMCES also had a fun-filled day, experiencing a Movie Marathon at the UCLM Audio-Visual Room, taking part in various literacy activities with the foodland-inspired booths at the UCLM Gymnasium, and being enthralled by a magic show – a fitting celebration for their success and achievement in their reading journey.

This shared moment of celebration is a fulfillment for all the people behind the program who believed in the transformative power and magic of reading, believing that with resilience and innovation, we can and will build a brighter future – one student, one word at a time.

University of Cebu School of Law tops among Category 2 law schools nationwide in recent Bar examinations.

With a 93.94% passing percentage among all of its takers, UC School of Law ranked number 1 among law schools with 51 to 100 examinees (Category 2). Ninety-three (93) of its ninety-nine (99) takers passed the 2020_21 first ever digitized and regionalized Bar examinations held on February 4 and 6, 2022. It also ranked second, with a 97.40% passing percentage, among Category 2 schools based on the passing percentage of its first takers. Eleven of its passers received a mark of 85%-90%. One received a mark of above 90%, one of only 14 all over the Philippines, and one of three from the Visayas and Mindanao. The UC community congratulates its new lawyers and the UC School of Law as it continues to add to its reputation as a hallmark of consistency and excellence.

UC School of Law Holds Virtual Graduation for the Class of 2020

Cebu City — The University of Cebu School of Law (UC Law) decided to get creative in honoring the success of the class of 2020 by holding a virtual graduation ceremony – a first in the country among law schools – to mark the end of the academic year 2019-2020. This year’s graduation theme – Building Resilience. Overcoming Adversity. Achieving Success. – reflects the determination and grit shown by the graduating class even in the midst of a crisis.

Dean Marisol DL. Anenias, the incumbent President of the Philippine Association of Law Schools, delivered this year’s keynote address during the commencement ceremony. Leading the Class of 2020 is Mr. Calvin Klein E. Lianza, C.P.A. who delivered his Valedictory Address while Mr. Carmelito D. Clabisellas, Jr., Voice of the Class of 2020 also gave the response ono behalf of the batch. Other guests who joined the virtual ceremony, albeit virtually are UC President Atty. Augusto W. Go, University Chancellor Candice Gotianuy, Dean Ofelia G. Maña and Atty. Manuel Elijah J. Sarausad. Members of the UC Law Faculty led by Dean Al-Shwaid L. Ismael were also present to show support to their students. The watch party was composed of alumni, students, and the families and friends of the graduates through an online live stream of the ceremony via Facebook.

The UC Community also celebrates the regionalization of the 2020 Bar Examinations wherein, for the first time in the bar exam history, Cebu will be a venue of the month-long exam. UC, along with other Visayas and Mindanao law schools, are excited and grateful that the Supreme Court has finally granted this request after years of lobbying the idea. The 2020 Bar Examinations, which has been dubbed as the #BestBarEver with Hon. Mario Victor “Marvic” Leonen as the Bar Chairperson, will now be held sometime in 2021.

The holding of the first-ever virtual graduation is UC Law’s way of embracing the challenge of change, building opportunities in the face of adversity, and transforming challenges into Success.

The University of Cebu Social Work Department of the College of Liberal Arts launched its student internship program and held an academic ‘trialogue’ with its partner agencies at the UC Main Campus, Cebu City.

After the oath taking of student interns, the stakeholders from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Rise Above Foundation, Eversley Child Sanitarium, Cebu Caritas Inc., and Christ for Asia International initiated a discussion on how to improve the curriculum in response to the demands of the industry and the needs of the rapidly-changing Philippine and global society.

UC students graduate as CPAs

University of Cebu accountancy students graduated as Certified Public Accountants and experienced a perfect graduation day. The students achieved this feat through hard work and with the guidance and support from the UC faculty and administration.

Usually, students graduate first before reviewing for the CPA board examinations. But these students from the University of Cebu Banilad Campus College of Business and Accountancy became CPAs first before their graduation ceremony.

As early as May 2013, Sheena Fernan, Jan Erika Go, Camille Anne Garcia, Wenceslao Pepito, Katrina Montenegro, Marilyn Escabas, Lowell Lloyd Cañete, and Ronalyn Alaraz, started their final semester in accountancy. This gave them a month’s leeway in finishing their course requirements and preparing for their board exams.

They took the CPA board exam last October 5, 6, 12 and 13, 2013 and the results were released on October 21. They all passed with flying colors. The Professional Regulation Commission said 4,246 out of 10,396 passed the Certified Public Accountant Licensure Examination this October 2013.

So it was another perfect graduation for these students as they walked up the stage on their Graduation Ceremony last October 24, 2013 at the University of Cebu Maritime Education and Training Center in Mambaling, Cebu City.

Their college chairman and mentor Mr. Cris Biore said, “This is a real outcome immediately upon graduation. It is a huge help to their parents in its truest sense, as their children can practice their profession right away; giving honor and fulfillment to their years of struggle.”

UC students sweep top three places at Customs Board Exam

Challenges give us strength and difficulties shape us into better persons. Such is the case with Evangeryl A. Muñez, the University of Cebu graduate who gained first place in the Customs Broker Licensure Examination. Evangeryl and her younger sister were raised by a single mother who works as a household helper. Yet despite the odds, Evangeryl became the high school valedictorian and went to the University of Cebu to seek support for college education.

At UC, she learned that being a valedictorian enabled her to become a full incentive scholar if she took a four year course with a board exam. She decided to take Customs Administration at the UC Lapulapu Mandaue campus, which was situated nearer to their home.

Evangeryl also received an allowance from the University President Atty. Augusto W. Go. So it was a sweet surprise when she learned that she topped the board examination. And as icing on the cake, UC President Atty. Go awarded Evangeryl with a brand new Toyota Vios for making the university proud.

At the University of Cebu, it has been proven time and again that poverty is not a hindrance to gaining quality education. Aside from Evangeryl gaining first place, UC students Dimple Palm D. Comaingking also gained second place, Mary Catherine C. Catalan third place and Mary Claire L. Tabal seventh place. All of them are graduates of UCLM College of Customs.

Enroll in University of Cebu’s Real Estate Management course

Responding to the demand of professionalizing the real estate industry in the Philippines, the University of Cebu (UC) offers Bachelor of Science in Real Estate Management (BS REM) and continues to accept incoming college students.
The Commission on Higher Education (Ched) gave UC the permit to offer the first two years of the four-year BS REM course in 2012.
Now on its second year, UC aims to encourage more students to enroll in the course that provides a solid grasp of the real estate industry and its laws and regulations, as well as trains students the best practices in planning, financing, investment, marketing, and development, among others.
Offering the BS REM is also in line with the Republic Act 9646 or the Real Estate Service Act of the Philippines. The law provides that the State recognizes the vital role of real estate service practitioners in the social political, economic development and progress of the country by promoting the real estate market, stimulating economic activity and enhancing government income from real property-based transactions. “Hence, it shall develop and nurture through proper and effective regulation and supervision a corps of technically competent, responsible and respected professional real estate service practitioners whose standards of practice and service shall be globally competitive and will promote the growth of the real estate industry,” the law added.
The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) will administer the real estate board exam that graduates are set to take. The three available licenses would be Real Estate Broker, Real Estate Appraiser and Real Estate Consultant.
Dr. Alberto Talaid, designated dean of UC College of Real Estate Management, said there is an increasing demand for real estate professionals today, considering that the economy is also dependent in real estate development and infrastructures.
“There’s really a lot of opportunities and income in real estate. Career possibilities include real estate brokerage, entrepreneur, management trainee, executive assistance, sales person broker, real estate marketing assistance, and account personnel, among others,” Talaid added.

He also said UC has a more affordable tuition than other schools offering the same course.
Graduates from any public high school in Cebu City can also enroll in BS REM through the P500 Tuition scheme of the Skolar sa Siyudad sa Sugbo Program. Student can present the P10,000 voucher given out by the Cebu City Government and pay only the P500 enrollment processing fee. The scheme is in line with UC’s commitment to make quality education accessible to the masses.

Talaid said BS REM students will also get the chance to work in big real estate companies in the country, especially in Cebu, during the internship year.

“To those who are interested to enroll in this course, we assure you that this course has a lot of opportunities to offer. And in choosing your course, plan properly and find your passion because if you are passionate of what you are doing, you will really excel,” said Talaid.

He added that real estate management is the trend now, and there is a need to follow the trend and adopt new things. “Adopting is one way of improving our way of life.”

UC-Maritime students top Navigational Watch Licensure Exam

Five out of ten topnotchers in the Officer-in-Charge of a Navigational Watch Licensure Examinations given last July 27 and 28, 2013 are from the University of Cebu (UC). O.I.C.-Navigational Watch topnotchers include John Ferdinand C. Ambrad, first place; Melchor G. Labajo, fourth place; Sean Robert L. Nasiad, fifth place; Albert John J. Alpes, 9th place; and Eubert Glen M. Supremo, tenth place.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced that 764 out of 1,392 passed the Officer-In-Charge of a Navigational Watch Licensure Examination given last July 2013.

This amazing feat by its maritime students shows the University of Cebu’s educational mantra of sustaining an attitude of excellence. These top performing students are products of UC’s quality education that is affordable at best.

UC offers P500 Tuition for Undergraduate Programs

With soaring tuition costs, going to a university has never been more challenging so that oftentimes money may be considered a major factor in determining a prospect of a bright future. Committed to making quality education accessible to the masses, the University of Cebu launched its P500 Tuition scheme through the Skolar sa Siyudad sa Sugbo Program. For as little as P500 enrollment processing fee, graduates from any public high school in Cebu City can enroll in an undergraduate program in UC by simply presenting the P10, 000 voucher given out by the Cebu City Government.

This incentive is applicable to courses that are in-demand, namely: Associate in Information Technology (Ladderized); BS in Information Technology; BS Hotel & Restaurant Management (Ladderized at UC Main only); BS in Elementary Education; BS in Secondary Education; BS in Business Administration; BS in Management; BS in Real Estate; Bachelor of Arts; BS in Office Administration; BS in Criminology (night class only); BS in Industrial Engineering; BS Tourism (UC Banilad only); and BS Accounting Technology (UC Banilad only). And because UC has a proven track record of quality education, they are a passport to good jobs.

The application process is also streamlined. UC Chancellor is new Honorary Norwegian Consul in Cebu

The Royal Norwegian Consulate in Cebu represented by the Ambassador of Norway Mr. Knut Solem formally appoints Ms. Candice G. Gotianuy as Honorary Norwegian Consul in Cebu for the provinces of Cebu and Negros Oriental.Ms. Candice Gotianuy is the incumbent Chancellor of the University of Cebu (with four campuses in Cebu; namely UC Main, UC Banilad, UC Maritime Education and Training Center, and UC Lapulapu Mandaue) and concurrently holds an executive function at the Cebu Technical School, a technical-vocational school. She also heads the institution’s medical arm, comprising of two hospitals; namely the St. Vincent General Hospital in Sambag II, Cebu City and the soon-to-open multi-specialty hospital, the University of Cebu Medical Center (UC Med ) at the North Reclamation in Mandaue City.

Ms. Gotianuy’s appointment will further strengthen Philippines’ bilateral relations with Norway, specifically in the academe and business sectors. Currently, Norwegian shipping principals are financing the education of 1,000 Maritime Engineering students in UC METC. This unique exchange program includes sending the students for apprenticeship on their 3rd year on-board shipping vessels owned by Norwegian companies.

While Norway’s Consulate in Cebu will be extending assistance to its Norwegian nationals, particularly those residing in the Visayas, the Consulate will also provide useful information about travel to Norway, Philippine-Norwegian business opportunities and offer support in the processing of consular requirements (such as passport, visa and maritime certificates). Norwegian passports, “Legal Capacity to Marry”, and other services may also be forwarded to Norway’s consulate in Cebu for facilitation. Moreover, the consulate will help expedite applications for visas to Denmark and Iceland, Sweden Estonia and Finland.

University of Cebu Medical Center holds Ceremonial Cornerstone Laying

University of Cebu President Atty. Augusto W. Go and his team sealed the fulfillment of a life-long dream to provide affordable education and medical services with the ceremonial Cornerstone Laying of the University of Cebu Medical Center.

With him were UC Chancellor Ms. Candice Gotianuy, Mrs. Elizabeth Go, Dr. Jose Lito Almendras Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes and DOH Dir. Asuncion Anden as they lowered the capsule containing the following symbols: a St. Benedict Medallion, ten peso coin and newspaper of the day, the incorporator’s paper and picture of incorporators with their names, a blueprint of the UCMed, the creed of medical profession, the permit from the Department of Health and a locator’s map of UCMed and Mandaue City.

The AWG Group of Companies is sourcing an initial investment of PhP 2 Billion to build the University of Cebu Medical Center (UCMed). It will be the first Level 4 Hospital in Mandaue City, spanning across a 1.3 hectare property located at the North Reclamation Area in Subangdaku.

UCMed will be 12 stories high with a 500-bed capacity. Its floor area will be close to 30,000 square meters with a massive entrance lobby, Emergency Room, Radiology Section with X-Ray, MRI and reception, doctors clinics, the Intensive Care Unit, Dialysis Center, operating rooms, admitting area, chapel, conference rooms, wards, private rooms and suite rooms.

The facility is designed by architectural firm Espina, Perez-Espina & Associates led by Archt. Maxwell Espina. Wally Liu, chief executive officer of Primary Structures will lead the construction of the hospital, which is expected to be fully operational in March 2015.

UCMed will serve the general public and the population of all the UC schools and campuses, including the 10,000 plus merchant marine students who will need medical accreditation and attention for foreign ship deployment and the medical and nursing students for their training and employment, plus the rest of the 39,000 students for their medical needs.

The UC Medical Center the commitment towards providing quality but affordable education and medical care will be elevated towards greater heights as UCMed will allocate a percentage of its of its services for less privileged members of Cebu at charitable prices.

UC-METC launches Philippine Nigerian Friendship Project

The University of Cebu continues to strengthen its linkages worldwide with the launching of the University of Cebu-Maritime Education and Training Center (UC-METC) Philippine – Nigerian Friendship Project.
The project brings Nigerian scholars to UC-METC campus located at Mambaling, Cebu City to study Nautical, Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture. The Nigerian Government pre-qualified the students and shouldered the scholars’ tuition, uniform, board and lodging, laptops and other education expenses.

This project will augment educational tourism as more Nigerian students choose to study in Cebu City. UC-METC was chosen over maritime schools in London and India, which is a big boost to the Philippines’ image in maritime education.

UC-METC Nigerian Project Director Mr. Edgar Comeros said, “We are expecting a total of 360 Nigerian scholars this year; 205 have already arrived last December 2012 and another 155 are expected to arrive in Cebu City in January 2013. These scholars are seen to finish their four year courses here.”

The Nigerian Government sees the project as a form of social engineering, to help its Nigerian nationals to be educated particularly in the maritime field. The project is seen to produce nautical and marine engineers and naval architecture graduates to help rebuild Nigeria’s shipping industry.

Aside from bringing in students from overseas, UC also provides scholarships for Filipino students. UC is the only school in the Philippines with numerous foreign scholarships and more than 2,000 Filipino scholars availing. Foreign scholarships available for Filipinos include the Norwegian Ship Owners Association (NSA) scholarship project, the Marlowe Study Now Pay Later Plan, Brize, IMEC, Blue Eastern and MIC.

Most Outstanding Jose Rizal Model Student

University of Cebu Banilad Campus student Jezreel Ezer Archival bagged the much coveted title as the Most Outstanding Jose Rizal Model Student of the Philippines 2013, besting 200 other applicants from schools and colleges all over the country.

Awarding was held at the Knights of Rizal International Headquarters last December 30, 2012 with Special Keynote Speaker Mayor Alfredo Lim, making it a proud moment for his family and UC community.

The 25th Search for Ten Outstanding Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines was organized by the Knights of Rizal to recognize ten (10) outstanding college students of the Philippines who best epitomize the Rizalian qualities of academic excellence and leadership in campus and community activities and the Rizalian virtue of love of country, thereby serving as living models to the youth of the land.

Each university / school can only send one nominee or candidate to the selection committee with criteria for final selection as follows: Academic Excellence (35%); Community Involvement (15%); Student Leadership and Co-Curricular Activities (20%); Final Interview (30%).

From over 200 applicants this year, twenty finalists were selected and were scheduled for a Final Interview last December 29, 2012 at the Knights of Rizal International Headquarters. A breakdown of twenty finalists comprised six from Luzon, four from the National Capital Region, nine from Visayas and one from Mindanao.

The Board of Judges then selected the Top Ten out of the twenty finalists who were given the prestigious title as the Ten Outstanding Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines. The first of the ten awardees was given the title of Most Outstanding Jose Rizal Model Student of the Philippines. Winners were given a certificate of recognition, a medal and a trophy.

Archival ranked highest among the ten finalists with ranking as follows: 10th – Jose Mari Pineda (Polytechnic University of the Philippines); 9th – Mary Allysa Jenica Sariba (University of Nueva Caceres); 8th – Francis Almaquer ( University of the Philippines – Visayas); 7th – Mark Solis (university of the Philippines – Diliman); 6th – Nikaela Katrina Gamboa (De La Salle – Lipa); 5th – Gabriel Ignacio Alejo (Ateneo de Manila University); 4th – Sandra Jane Soon (Cebu Institute of Technology – University); 3rd – John Michael Lava (Far Eastern University); 2nd – Javier Rugiera (Ateneo de Naga University); and 1st and Most Outstanding Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines – Jezreel Ezer Archival (University of Cebu – Banilad).

Jezreel Ezer Archival is a fourth year Bachelor of Science in Business Administration student at UC Banilad who was part of the UC Team that gained the title of National Champion of the Food Category and 1st runner up of the Non-Food Category in the 2012 Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) 6th Best Business Idea and Development (BIDA) Award for their projects “Hanging Rice” and “Mango Seed Kernel Oil”.

On the first week of November 2012, Mr. Archival went to Germany as one of the 4 representatives from the Philippines for the Bayer (Global) Young Environmental Envoy. When he came back from a week trip from Germany, he received a letter from the Office of the President informing him that he will be one of the delegates picked by the National Youth Commission to go to Japan for another social project.

UC produces three topnotchers for Customs Broker Exams

Three University of Cebu students made it to the top ten of the October 2012 Customs Broker Licensure Examination! Evez Dexter Aranzado Carcedo, Harly Kenn Oyao Villasor, and Jonel Mascariola Pilota ranked Fifth, Seventh and Ninth respectively.UC is the only Cebu school who produced topnotchers, with the rest of the seven top ten slots covered by universities in Luzon.

Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila and Batangas State University both produced the firsts in rank while Philippine Marine School-Las Piñas produced the second. Other schools who produced the top placers were Emilio Aguinaldo College-Manila, Adamson University, Philippine Maritime Institute-Manila and Westmead International School.

The Customs Broker Licensure Examination was held on October 24 and 25, 2012 with results released on October 30. National passing rate was 40.75% with UC’s passing rate for First Timers at 40.63%; Repeaters at 32.08%; and an Overall rate of 36.75%. UC had 117 takers with 43 passers.
