Android 3.0, the version for Android Tablets, to debut!

Since Google posted an introduction video of Android 3.0 to its developers channel on YouTube there has been much of anticipation about this new version. The excitement continued when Google officially introduced Android 3.0 the Honeycomb on its official blog. The release date of Honeycomb expected early this year the moment Iconia Tab, Motorola’s Xoom or G-Slate are launched officially!

Android 3.0, also called the Honeycomb is Androids version optimized for large-screen devices particularly Tablets. According to the official Google blog, Honeycomb has "a brand new, truly virtual and holographic user interface” and a home screen that is fully customizable with a flashy 3D experience aided with completely redesigned widgets that are richer and more interactive. Honeycomb also includes Google Maps 5 that can be reliably used in offline mode on mobile devices. Goggle claims for other enhancements like elegant notifications and more refined multi-tasking. By far the web-browser received greater refinements. The browser is enabled with multi-tabbed browsing, auto-fill form, private browsing, and integrated Chrome bookmark syncing.

Who will run Android 3.0!?
Korean firm asserts that honeycomb will require at least dual –core processors .Motorola has already demonstrated its device Motorola Xoom tablet running on Honeycomb that debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show this January. Motorola device features a dual-core processor 10.1-inch screen, front- and rear-facing cameras and HD video recording. LG will also launch G-Slate with the support of T-Mobile. On the other hand, Acer has also announced 7- and 10-inch Android tablets, rumored to be released this April.
It is fancied that Android 3.0 is for high-end devices, and will run on phones that satisfy the criteria of 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 3.5-inch or larger displays. Till yet, it is supposed that Samsung Galaxy S2 will run on honeycomb. PSP Phones are also believed to be released with Android 3.0.
Android 3.0 has specially stirred excitement in the market and community of developers. If all goes smooth in favor of Google, Google will easily manage to take away Apple Ipad2’s potential customers!

What is the easiest way to share a file with several users without making the file server buckle under the load of everybody trying to download it at the same time? Make a Torrent of the file, upload it to your server and share the link to the Torrent file with your users. This way each downloader will be contributing to the bandwidth needed to let everybody else download. Your users are happy, your server is happy. BitTorrent is beautiful.
Burnbit is a new online service launched today that allows anybody to generate a torrent for any file hosted online. It is targeted at people who want to share large files with multiple people, at great speeds and without consuming too much bandwidth. Users upload a file to a server and Burnbit generates a torrent file to share with the public. And because the torrents are linked to a file hosted somewhere online, it will always be accessible and never die out.

The Burnbit site will host the torrent file and provide a download page for each torrent similar to the kind provided by Torrent trackers and search sites like the infamous Pirate Bay. Burnbit users can track various stats of the torrent file, like the download count and the number of seeds and leechers, from this page. Users can also generate live download buttons that show seeder/leechers stats.
The major downside to the service at the moment is that all files are public. There is no option to add a private file, which may hold people back from sharing private stuff. Additionally, it would be nice if one could add a custom title or description to the burned files.
At the time of its launch the site already indexes more than 150,000 files which the site’s crawlers have found while browsing the web. All the files have been automatically categorized, but users can add their own categories when they upload files.

Flash Video NuCaptcha Ready to Block Bots

CAPTCHA: the most irritating and unfortunate necessity of the Web. Spam bots have gotten smart enough to outwit most of the hoops put in place to keep them from flooding various sites with fake accounts. To stem the tide, CAPTCHAs have gotten increasingly difficult for the bots to decipher, which has the unfortunate side effect of leaving humans just as puzzled. While we're forced to pause, squint and scratch our heads at the obscure combinations of letters and numbers, the machines are only getting better at breaking them.

A new idea is to switch from static mixes of letters and numbers to videos that are more legible to human viewers, and arguably more difficult for machines to parse. NuCaptcha's NuCaptcha would play short videos of letters bobbing and scrolling across a background. A predetermined message in white would be followed by a short selection of characters in red, which a user would be asked to repeat. First zero day exploit hits Firefox 3.6

Security specialists from Russia have made a Windows exploit for a previously unknown security hole in Mozilla's Firefox 3.6 available to the public. The exploit allows attackers to remotely gain control of your Windows machine. Developer Evgeny Legerov praises his exploit for Windows XP (SP3) and Vista as being reliable, however that doesn't necessarily mean that Firefox on other platforms is not affected.

The hole is likely to be still open since no updates have been released since the exploit became public. Secunia rates the problem as highly critical, however the Mozilla Foundation has yet to release an official statement - and patch.

Whether the exploit has already been widely circulated or used on a large scale remains unknown. The H is reporting that according to the analysis on the Extraexploit blog, a significant increase in the number of Firefox 3.6 crashes was noted on the 12th and 13th of February, but no-one can really say if this is related to the exploit or not.

Make sure to check for Firefox updates more often since the built-in update checker is very dull. Users with older versions of the Mozilla browser may update to Firefox 3.0.18 and Firefox 3.5.8.

Grand Theft Auto Drops on iPhone for $9.99

Grand Theft Auto IV was the biggest game launch of all time (or it was until Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 hit the shelves, anyway), and now you can get an approximation of that GTA experience on your iPhone or iPod touch with Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [iTunes link].

The game is a direct port from the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, and throwback to the top-down perspective of the first two GTA games.

It’s especially notable that the game costs $9.99. That’s a little bit steep for an iPhone game, but it’s much cheaper than the game was on the DS or PSP, where it debuted at $34.99 and $39.99, respectively. The touchscreen controls work well and the level of graphical quality lands between that of the Nintendo DS and PSP versions.

The reception has been positive so far. As we’re writing this, the game has 40 ratings and an average of 4.5 stars. App Store user Puese gave it five stars and said: “The polish on this is over the top. We have come a long way from only having snake on your phone as a game.” However, marcosrdz gave it only one star, saying that it crashes a few seconds after displaying the terms of service screen. Some players say that it lacks a few minor features of the DS version — for example, pedestrian speech has been removed, presumably to reduce the size of the download.

Our experience with Chinatown Wars has been good, too; the game runs smoothly, and while the touchscreen controls aren’t quite as comfortable as those on the DS or PSP, they’re more than good enough.

The IBM 305 RAMAC, publicly announced on September 13, 1956, was the first

commercial computer that used a moving head hard disk drive. RAMAC stood for

"Random Access Method of Accounting and Control". Its design was motivated by

the need for real time accounting in business. The IBM 350 disk system stored 5 million

8-bit (7-bits plus 1 odd parity bit) characters. It had fifty 24-inch diameter disks.

Two independent access arms moved up and down to select a disk, and in and

out to select a recording track, all under servo control. Average time to locate a single

record was 600 milliseconds.

The original 305 RAMAC computer system weighed over a ton and could be housed

in a room of about 9 m (30') by 15 m (50'); the 350 disk storage unit measured around

1.5 m² (16 sq ft). The first hard disk unit was shipped September 13, 1956.

The additional components of the computer were a card punch, a central processing

unit, a power supply unit, an operator's console/card reader unit, and a printer. There

was also a manual inquiry station that allowed direct access to stored records. IBM

touted the system as being able to store the equivalent of 64,000 punched cards.

More People Are Now Searching for Google Chrome Than Internet Explorer

Hitwise weekly search data seems to suggest that, for the first time, more people in UK searched for Google Chrome than Internet Explorer.
And this is not just happening in the UK. The global figures from Google Trends also show that worldwide traffic for the search term “google chrome” overtook “internet explorer” during that same week.

Other than these viral videos, Google also launched Chrome for Mac and Linux and that probably generated plenty of interest in the Google browser worldwide.

Google Takes on HTTP with SPDY

Google Chrome has been dominating the headlines this week, but what might have escaped notice is Google taking a crack at the "tubes" of the Internet itself. As part of Google's "let's make the Web faster initiative, it is working on SPDY (pronounced "speedy"), a protocol that's supposed to improve on the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).

SPDY's goals are to reduce page load time by 50%, make it easy to deploy, and ensure that there's no need for content changes. Changes would be required on the client end and the server end, but the content itself would require no change.
According to the overview, SPDY looks to improve on HTTP with three key changes: Multiplexed requests, prioritized requests, and compressed headers.
Multiplexed requests mean no upper limit on the number of requests sent over a connection, which is more efficient. Prioritized requests mean that a client, like your Web browser, can ask for specific resources to be delivered first.
Finally, SPDY aims to compress the headers sent back and forth between the client and server to save bandwidth and reduce latency in communication.
It's worth noting that SPDY isn't the only proposal to boost the performance of HTTP. Other proposals include HTTP over SCTP, Stream Control Transmission Protocol, and others.
SPDY is also attempting to preserve other HTTP features such as cookies, content-encoding, and other features "work exactly as they do with HTTP; SPDY only replaces the way the data is written to the network."
From a user perspective, SPDY could be a great boon -- especially for users who view much of the Web through mobile devices.
At this point, there's very little of the online or computing experience that Google doesn't touch -- or at least try to touch. Google now has its hands in search, email, online advertising, online video, DNS, a custom programming language, operating systems, Web browsers, mobile device OS, and is now even proposing a new standard for the way that applications transmit information over the Web.
This is a fairly ambitious, and to some worrying, set of offerings. It will be interesting in 2010 to see how successful Google is, and what new projects the company tries to tak

How to hide your email from spambots

Spams are a real problem, and i know that everybody is experiencing problems with spams, but did you ever think how spams get your email? Spammers make use of "spambots" which roam the web "harvesting" email addresses to send spam to. Often you have no choice but to include a mailto link with an email address in a web page. Fortunately most of these spambots do not seem to have complete HTML parsers, and most do not execute JavaScript.

A nice solution bring by albion research whic uses obfuscation to generate a "mailto:", go to this link type in your real email address in the field and click "Obfuscate". Their program will spit out two different "encodings" of your email that will be readable to humans (and clickable), but will cause havoc for email harvesting spambots.
Is a nice solution to protect your email from spambot online, now you can leave email behind you in comments without any problems.

Google to show off Chrome OS Thursday, release it in 2010

Remember that rumor last week about how Google was going to unveil the first beta release of its upcoming Chrome operating system this week? Yeah, it's looking like that's not going to happen. But the company is holding an event Thursday morning to talk about Chrome OS and show some honest-to-goodness demos for the first time so that we can all stop using conceptual mockups with every blog post on the topic.

Google Chrome OS is expected to be available sometime next year, although it's still possible that a beta could be launched before the end of 2009. From what we know, the operating system, which will be initially aimed at netbooks is designed to blur the lines between desktop and cloud by essentially treating an always-open browser as the desktop. For instance, that will make it just as easy to save documents to Google Docs as to your desktop, if not easier.

German government wants open standards and open source

The newly elected German government plans to support open standards and open source software. In its four-year coalition contract, the government led by chancellor Angela Merkel, writes it wants to orient its IT systems on open standards and include open source solutions.

Together with its sister party CSU and her liberal coalition partner (FDP), the government parties have constructed a 133 page coalition contract, which, in the chapter "Information and Media Society" declares intentions to expand e-Government by increasing electronic communication options for both citizens and enterprises.

It says, "The German government's technical communication requires concentration, standardization, increased efficiency and a pooling of existing resources. Therefore we want to strengthen the government's representative for Information Technology. We are examining at how the government's IT can in the future orient itself on open standards, taking open source solutions into account."

The German on-line portal Linux Community asked the government's IT representative what this statement would mean in practice. Speaker for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Daniela-Alexandra Pietsch, explained it was too early to go into detail, but emphasised that, "only through the implementation of open standards and license-free standards will today's and future highly complex IT systems be manageable".

Pietsch expects that one of the main issues would be the development of a XML standard for data exchange inside and outside government bodies. She also called attention to XDOMEA, the first result of current efforts. XDOMEA is an XML format for the exchange of electronic documents, currently available in version 2.0. On the whole, the German government wants to set up a planning council to raise IT awareness. The council, Pietsch told Linux Community, will determine interoperability and security standards in the near future.
