Though they have collaborated previously, this is the couple’s first time onstage together as they present the concert series The Yellow Pony & Other Songs & Stories, featuring reinterpretations of each artist’s classic repertoire as well as duets, instrumentals, extracts from theater pieces and poetry readings. Vampire Weekend is the kind of rock music that forms when you scoop up preppy trust-fund babies who know how to put together a rhyme and dump them in New York City. Well, not really, but what kind of rock band wears white tennis sweaters and cable-knit scarves?

These four lads, apparently: buzzy Vampire Weekend met at Columbia University and hit the indie rock scene after graduating in 2007. We kind of wish they had stayed there; their self-titled debut last January proved a talent for catchy Afro-pop ditties (like A-Punk), but lead singer Ezra Koenig’s two-man college rapper group L’Homme Run was totes funnier.

Joan Wasser, the creative force behind art-rock project Joan as Police Woman, is perhaps best known for dating Jeff Buckley for the four years leading up to his untimely death. A musical force in her own right, Wasser has recorded and performed with the likes of Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright and Anthony and the Johnsons.

Toning down her experimental sounds for a pop aesthetic, her voice—sharing an underlying musical affinity with Buckley’s melancholic tones—is the star. As she is only playing a handful of European dates, this show is not to be missed.

Loud, voluptuous and enjoying her extended 15 minutes of fame, Beth Ditto, the lead singer of the Portland-based band, The Gossip, is more than just a post-punk virtuoso. Known for her bold attitude—a plus size model and the cover girl for Katie Perry’s inaugural glossy, Love—her DIY indie rock/post punk creations have become the talk of the town.

Ditto and her fellow band mates, Brace Pain (guitar, bass) and Hannah Blilie (drums), have just finished a new album, Music for Men. The album, produced by Rick Rubin, will be released on June 22nd.

If you don’t get to see her live, maybe you can get your hands on a new Beth Ditto doll, because apparently Ditto is the new Barbie.

Festival: Distortion

Distortion combines the best of Copenhagen’s streetlife and nightlife into five days of what Norway’s Milk and Money Mag calls, “the longest and wildest party, ever.”

The schedule packs 66 parties in 66 different locations—16 street parties, three block parties and 40 bus/shop/gallery/bar/bungalow/beach/boat/bridge parties. All-out raves nightly, the festival features names like Glass Candy, Monotonix, Black Lips, Trentemøller and Whomadewho.

In 2007, Force of Nature’s first year of production, Hypebeast featured the premiere, environmentally friendly collection of t-shirts, calling it a “throwback to the early Scandinavian Iron Age with an emphasis on metalwork, woodwork and weapon art.”

Now, having opened a gallery and shop that sells a number of different labels (among them Soulland, UBIQ, Permanent Vacation, Hans Madsen and atmos) Force of Nature has evolved into a “design family,” that promises to “do [its] best to thrill and excite.”

The shop’s funeral-parlor-esque design concept features window displays complete with lonely urns and an interior wall piece proclaiming: “Life Before Death.” Paying homage to their crypt obsession, owner-designers Stine Kinch and Mads Jonassen will present a group exhibition surrounding urn aesthetics in late 2009.

Threatened by financial troubles brought on by the space’s former director, Bo Nilsson, Kunsthal Charlottenborg is back on its wary feet, regaining its integrity one exhibition at a time. But don’t let the institute’s recent drama overcloud its glorified history.

Originally built in 1883, Kunsthal Charlottenborg was constructed as the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’s art library and exhibition space. No longer institutionally affiliated with the school itself, the independent art space still maintains the art library and is the home of the Academy’s senior exhibition.

Named for the city’s famed widow, Queen Charlotte Amalie, Kunsthal Charlottenborg hangs nearly five exhibitions per year, most of which are curated in house. In addition to the thesis exhibition and other curated shows, the contemporary art space hosts the annual “Spring Exhibition”—an open-call, juried exhibition.

The eclectic Danish artist and designer “Meannorth” transports her signature style on T-shirts made by advanced minority and had an impressive exhibition in art space Vienna.

Naja Conrad, aka “Meannorth”, has a gift: dry humor, depth beneath the cool exterior, and yes, talent. Her unconventional alias, undoubtedly an eye catcher, stimulates one’s imagination: Is “Meannorth” a badass chick from Northern Europe? Does she mean North? Is it a statement or a question? She won’t tell. Conrad likes to challenge herself as well as her audience. In her work, she strives to fabricate a fictive universe around her subjects, always eager to bare their very soul. “I usually make up a short story or sentence of what my characters could say or think”, she says. She creates a distinct personality for each one of them. Whether it is editorial work or art pieces for exhibitions, she tries to get to the core of it.

In one of her illustrations, Conrad depicts an attractive, fashionable girl with an elongated body, nice features and funky styling. A strange, little monkey rests on her back and its speech bubble allows further introspection: ‘I see something that you don’t see’. It becomes clear that there is more to a girl than perfect looks and a sexy appearance. Sadly, this is too often forgotten in our glossy world. “Women have so many facets: beauty, intelligence, determination, as well as strengths”, says Conrad, which is probably why she has chosen them to be her favorite subjects.

She draws her inspiration from hard-core music, fashion and by keeping in touch with the world around her. “I lived in Berlin for a while. “In those days, I was part of the hard-core music scene and experimented with drugs,” she recalls. These ‘wild’ times might be over, but her passion for music has stayed. “It’s excellent energy for work”, she says and, “helps me indulge in my obsession with spaces between lines and curves”.

Her collections of spunky illustrations and vibrant black & white penciling are displayed on various materials such as canvas, textile and paper – utensils, which have surrounded her since early childhood.

My mother is an artist and I grew up with the smell of turpentine and paint. I have always been creative, but when my daughter Jazz was born, I finally decided to get some formal education.

Despite Conrad’s aversion to schooling, she successfully obtained various degrees from “Copenhagen Art School” and “Denmark Design School”. “It’s just easier to get jobs with a piece of paper in your hands”, she admits. Since the start of Conrad’s professional career, she has splashed her signature style all over the place. “It’s great to do a mix of different things. At least, it never gets boring”, she says with a sparkle in her eyes.

The list of job references is rather long: Conrad has worked on numerous projects, ranging from the clothing line “Max Mara” to the solid perfume “Filth”, as well as an award winning children’s book. Her graphics, illustrations and paintings have been shown at exhibitions in China as well as the U.S., and she has successfully up-graded many fashion and lifestyle magazines with her unique technique. However, there is still more to come. She has a lot to give. “We really appreciate her stuff. It’s remarkably good”, Gabor Merö, co-founder of “advanced minority” says.

If you’re in up-and-coming Amager, look for an artistic flag—which changes frequently, based on a contribution-only process—flapping outside of a big white building the shape of a rectangle. It’s The Beaver Project, housed in the former headquarters of Scandinavia’s largest porn publisher and one of the more prominent international art galleries in the city.

There’s plenty of space for artistic freedom in the gallery’s huge rooms. Artists come from different backgrounds and choice of mediums, but all utilize strong, distinct signatures and an intelligent approach to the artistic process. Additionally, while promising Danish and more established artists typically exhibit at Beaver Projects, all artists are selected from the refreshing dictum that art should never be reduced to hype or fashion.

Since opening in 1783, Byens Kro has been an integral part of Copenhagen’s nightlife. Located in the center of town in a pleasant, unpretentious setting, the old bodega has served quality beer to nearly every brew-loving Copenhagener though the modern age.

Nowadays the bodega is a meeting place for artists, upcoming writers and creative types. Famous for its 11 draft beer pipes, ranging from the Italian Birra Menabrea the the San Francisco brewery Anchor Steam, the bodega also has its own special brew called Byens Øl (Byens’ Beer), made by the small Danish brewery, Svanneke Bryghus.

The walls of the bodega are frequently filled with student work from the nearby Royal Danish Art Academy and often the work is for sale. Always at reasonable prices, this is prime stomping ground for art scouts—the works on the wall may just be the next big thing.

Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914) extended his taste-making skills beyond beer to generating a prolific art collection, and thank god. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is Copenhagen’s most extensive ancient and contemporary art museum, and houses the largest ancient art collection in Northern Europe.

The 10,000 pieces of artwork here are divided into two parts: the Mediterranean-Western Culture Collection and the 19th and 20th-century Danish and French art collection. Stroll around the premises, which include a Winter Garden, café and the Larsen Building for the Collection of French Painting, for a perfect mid-day retreat with Gauguin and Rodin.

Wareika is the collaboration of Henrik Raabe and Jakob Seidensticker, both specialists in dub techniques (Voidcom / Ministry of Sound, Jubilee Rec., Ostwind Rec, Lebensfreude Rec.), jack-of-all-trades Florian Schirmacher (Philpot, Cadenza, Perlon, Poker Flat). Enjoying their favorite records, they realized a musical cooperation, which in fact has what it takes to remain in everlasting remembrance.

As new tartelet artists, Wareika features a unique blend of dub, percussion and afro beat music.

The three ”Wareikians”, each of them well trained and experienced musicians show in their works a crystallization of their musical aspirations, On the A side is Ascending / descending wareika comes up with almost 15 minutes afro-related drums and percussions, accompanied by warm analog-synth raster scanning and highlights, served on a pushing, strong-force but simple beat, that carries one’s body and on and on the b side Baracuda takes you thrugh a acoustic deep house and out of the ten minute groove.

Begun as a project space in Berlin, Andersens Contemporary—originally Andersens Wohnung—was the brainchild of Danish artist Claus Andersen and German artists Thilo Heinzmann and Anselm Reyle.

Having made strong connections with many rising German artists, Andersen moved back to his native Copenhagen in 2004 and opened the new gallery which has since hosted a myriad of exhibitions including works by Olafur Eliasson, Tomas Saraceno, Thiago Rocha Pitta and Malene Landgreen.

Doling out traditional Danish food in the depths of Vesterbro, Restaurant Klubben is cheap and egalitarian, catering to both the old and newly gentrified communities. You’ll find classic dishes such as old-fashioned beef stew, frikadeller (traditional Danish meatballs), Wiener schnitzel and roast pork served with red cabbage all accompanied with plenty of seasonal vegetables and Bearnaise sauce.

The quintessentially Danish smørrebrød is also served between 12:00 and 17:00 with toppings such as curried herring, smoked salmon, paté and smoked eel. Klubben is homely and informal and a favorite summer haunt of locals owing to its sizable yard equipped with patio heaters.

Opened in the roar of the roaring 1920’s, Café Intime has always had a bohemian and nonconformist attitude. With live performances, loose behavior and cabaret behind colored glass, the whole place has a sort of indecent yet appealing vibe.

In years gone by, the cafe had private booths with tables installed, making it a haven for the city’s homosexual scene as well as a place where you could be lewd with your neighbors finding out.

Today it is a kitsch cabinet, complete with porcelain memorabilia, aging drag queens and a small gnarly looking bar pianist, playing Danish traditionals and schlagers. Jazz bands, drag queens and other live entertainment performs on a regular basis in addition to the ever-present pianist. The atmosphere is still very special and Café Intime remains an outpost for the outre within the bland and gentrified Frederiksberg.

Seriously, how many home design stores are there in Copenhagen? Nearly every boutique shop sells some kind of Eames chair-meets-Arne Jacobsen creation—which makes this little second-hand shop on Ravnsborggade all the more special.

Pawning a serious collection of antique Scandinavian goods, from candlesticks to bric-a-brac bowls, lamps, plates, etc., owner Ole Madsen gleefully informs each patron on each piece’s pedigree. Now that’s what we call designer quality.

Location: Jean Nouvel Concert Hall

During the day Jean Nouvel’s new concert hall stands out, but at night it shines—literally. The site of a huge, electric blue cube, glowing against a backdrop of dark sky and less-than-interesting gray office buildings is startling. While arresting, mostly due to the colorful facade, it is simultaneously calming in a manner that brings to mind Detroit Metro’s psychedelic colored tunnel.

Just as the building’s appearance stands sharp contrast to its surroundings, the hall’s interior, an echo of Hans Scharoun’s Berlin Philharmonic, is also starkly different from its exterior. While the exterior is fashioned from fabric and white concrete, the inside of the auditorium, cascading balconies and all, is entirely carved from layers of smooth hardwood, creating a sense of warmth—the perfect stage for concerts to come.

Location: Arbejder Museet

Arbejder Museet was founded in 1983 by Denmark’s strong Work Union and grass roots movements. The museum celebrates the working class’ struggle for equality and rights during the last 150 years through artworks and informative exhibitions aimed at teaching younger generations about the working man’s sobering conditions and hardships.

The permanent collection shows different aspects of working class life during the past two centuries. The displays often border on kitsch with replica families placed in different settings such as picnicking on the countryside or stocking up at replica storefronts. A replica 1930’s apartment is complete with a smoking mother by her baby’s cradle, drawing on the differences in Danish class divisions.

The building which houses Arbejder Museet is fittingly the former site of the Workers Union headquarters, originally constructed in 1879. The still standing assembly hall has seen many notable dignitaries from the old worker’s movement, such as Lenin Clara Zetkin and Rosa Luxembourg. The building also houses an old café and beerhall which appear similar to how they did during their inception in 1892, and focuses on serving traditional Danish food as well as Danish beers, such as Stjerne Pilsen, a lager originally brewed by the worker’s brewery, Bryggeriet Stjerne, and these days only sold here.

Aside from its vibrant cultural life, bustling streetscape and numerous cafés and shops, Nørrebro is also known for the Blågårdsgade district’s younger inhabitants’ strenuous relationship with the police, resulting in regular street fights and, if not quite riot like situations, then times of grave civilian unrest.

Despite this, or probably specifically because of this, the state has built one of Copenhagen’s most architecturally fascinating sports halls—designed by BBP architects—Korsgadehallen. In what was formerly an empty lot of land, a sloped grassy hill now forms a commanding presence, hiding the sports hall situated inside.

The halls have the feeling of spacious caves, with bent steel reinforcements and streams of light coming in through five windows cut into the hill. The space consists primarily of open courts intended for ball games, but these can even be converted into stages for musical acts, theater plays, or other cultural engagements. In the summer, people use the artificial hills as a place for picnics, and during winter, happy children can be seen sliding down the gentler slopes of the roof.

ArtRebels is an outlet for creatives promoting everything from music releases, art, clothing and design. Started by DJ Sensimilla, who is one-half of the baile funk and electro duo Fagget Fairys, ArtRebels functions as a group of like-minded friends who’ve decided to put their good networks to use, bridging the commercial world with the artistic.

With their online store as the network’s hub, ArtRebels also hosts the occasional market, selling anything from poster design to clothes.

Apart from being a for-profit organization, ArtRebels also run HeartRebels, a charity fund aimed at helping the less fortunate in developing countries with creativity-based youth initiatives.

Named after Regitze Barner, who once managed a home for women at this same address in the late 19th century, Frk Barners Kælder is the epitome of nostalgic love for grandma’s cooking and pubs of old.

This is one of the original tattoo parlors leftover from Istedgade’s illustrious past as a red light district, and it’s an increasingly rare breed. Tattoo John experienced its heyday back before tattoos of sailors and swallows were trendy, and while Veterbro might swarm with more babystrollers and advertising executives than needles and bikers these days, the latter can still find refuge at the tattoo parlor.

Outisde, the shady junkies and prostitutes of yesteryear are still hanging, and inside the outdated needlework that has experienced curious longevity in the tattoo-world is still welcome. If ‘90s-style tribal symbols and flagrant dragons descending upon limbs like an infectious fever are your thing, you’ve arrived at the right place.

Copenhagen has changed dramatically over the 25 years I’ve lived here, the last 15 of those right in the heart of it’s traditional red light district Vesterbro, now a trendy bohemian hot-spot. Copenhagen used to be a city in black and white, seedy, crumbling, and provincial, but through the ‘90s and into the new millennium it has bounced back as a much more international micro-metropolis with a whole new variety in its color scheme.

I don’t miss the provincial-ness of the ‘80s at all, but I do tend to miss the rough edges and the seediness from back when whole parts of the inner city looked like crumbling backdrops of a B&W punk documentary with a Sort Sol soundtrack…

But we have paid a high price for that gentrification. Copenhagen has lost its cheap apartments, its working class-population, its blue collar bars/coffee shops, its backyard workshops, its good, ol’ boys drinking beer on the door-steps, its restaurants allowing smoking after your meal, and a lot of the old tolerance, as the city has been turned into Big Mother Wallpaper Visitation Zone.

This small storefront gallery is situated in the heart of Vesterbro, exhibiting and selling art by up-and-coming Danish artists, most of whom are just popping their heads up from the fertile underground to share their latest visual endeavors.

The store’s concept, clothing and staff are one in the same here: young, beautiful and devoted to fashion. This European designer boutique could just as easily be found along New York’s Madison Avenue row of name brand storefronts; but instead it’s where Copenhagen answers to the calls of high fashion.

Presenting a choice selection of lines such as Dior Homme, Burberry Prorsum and Dries van Noten on the men’s side; and Chloé, Ann Demeulemeester and Haider Ackermann on the women’s, there aren’t many stores that can compete with Storm’s caliber of clothing in Copenhagen.

And for the fashion-indifferent significant others who are dragged along, Storm also has an excellent selection of magazines, records and art books to keep them occupied.

While it may look like a run down old hole, Floss holds a mythic importance to the locals, as it used to be one of the main hang-outs for Copenhagen’s punk scene, and has been a nurturing locale for many of Denmark’s punk and rock bands, writers and artists.

It might seem as though time has stood still here since the early 1990s—same goes for much of the clientele—although you’ll come across updated wardrobes and older, more worn and rugged looks (people started aging hard when someone first said “punk’s not dead”).

To this day the bar enjoys somewhat of a cult following, and remains a favorite for players in Copenhagen’s rock scene. Yet there’s plenty more than reminiscing on yesteryear to keep you occupied here, like the pool table, dartboards and fussball on the lower level. And remember to keep in mind one of the most opportune happy hours, held daily from 22:00-23:00.

The musical profile in this small venue—just around the corner from Sankt Hans Torv—is almost purely world music, bringing a variety of talented acts to Copenhagen who encompass everything from klezmer and folk to desert blues, rumba, reggae, African beats and Indian ragga.

The bands, often unheard of on these shores, seldom fail to deliver a stunning performance. Gigs here are certainly not to be underestimated. The crowds are unusually dedicated and receptive, so dancing gets serious as the night progresses. Global allows you to really expand your musical horizon far beyond the western mainstream.

The venue also hosts club-nights featuring a more urban repertoire of hip-hop and electronic music by local musicians and DJs. If you’re lucky, you might also catch a release party, as Global seems to be a favorite place for new Copenhagen bands to introduce their freshly pressed vinyl to their audiences and the market. Student discounts on tickets and great organic beers at the bar give this place the final thumbs up.

Any coffee addict heading down Istedgade must make a point of stopping by this tiny caffeine refueling-station. One of the four coffee joints in Copenhagen owned by Ricco Harder Sørensen, Ricco’s assures that its roasted beans are never more than two weeks old and that the coffee is prepared by skilled staff catering to the pickiest of aficionados.

The café has a small back room with a handful of retro tables strewn about the intimate setting. The music is all played off vinyl records, and you’re even welcome to operate the turntable yourself. The front room, though, is where the magic happens. Coffee is delivered and fresh baked croissants are served from the tiny bar up front. A few stools by the window give you the perfect platform to gaze out on the busy street.

Ricco’s also sells coffee beans, coffee makers, ceramics and chocolate, making this an all-out one-stop coffee shop promoting the cafe-good-life.

A multitude of books, Freudian sex-themed artwork and other small gems greet you as you enter this literature grotto on one of the oldest streets in Copenhagen. Booktrader’s stock is 50% Danish and 50% English/American, offering an ample selection of English-language titles in an otherwise difficult and expensive city regarding book shopping.

Though the fellow that runs the shop might be quite an odd ball with his wild beard and trademark hermit look, you couldn’t ask a more knowledgeable person for advice when it comes to trying to uncover obscure and hard-to-find books housed within the plethora of old publications.

Booktrader carries titles addressing the human sciences only, specializing in subjects like history, art, philosophy and literary criticism. The prices are fair and you might easily get away with a bargain. Looking around the shop always makes for an intriguing experience, as the space at times also boasts some surprising art exhibitions and a beautiful alphabet installation consisting of the letters A-Z rendered on old book-covers. It took the hermit seven years to complete this collection, and we’re grateful for his time and effort.

Oozing rock’n’roll aura, sweaty headbanging sensibility and indefatigable teen spirit, this truly indie record store is one of the few still standing strong in Copenhagen. An institution in its own right, Sexbeat was founded in the mid-eighties by the guy known by all in the local rock scene as Thomas Sexbeat. The shop boasts a huge selection of CDs and vinyl, covering the genres of rock, heavy metal, nu-metal, goth, industrial and punk rock, as well as proudly placing custom orders on almost any album ever released through their own import sources.

This is also the place to come buy concert-tickets and get the latest info on the toughest tours coming through town. For true rock fans, you’ll find a large merchandise selection ranging from t-shirts to silver-skull belt buckles and other metal and goth paraphernalia. Rock on!

The last few years have witness an increasing interest in Danish design from the 20th century. This renaissance is founded on the work of several great names, including Arne Jacobsen, Hans J. Wegner, Kaare Klint and Poul Henningsen.

The designs of these icons are very much back in style, featured extensively by trendsetting publications like Wallpaper, Dazed and Confused and Vogue. Jacobsen’s Egg, Ant and Swan chairs, for instance, along with Henningsen’s lamp shades can still be seen sprawled all across hip, bustling cafes and retro-style bars in Copenhagen, London and New York. Pussy Galore’s Flying Circus and Stereo Bar in Copenhagen are prime examples.

But Arne Jacobsen is not the only internationally renowned Danish architect who retains a presence in Copenhagen. Jørn Utzon, designer of the world-famous Sydney Opera House, also laid out the groundwork for the Paustian furniture store in the dock area.

The city of Copenhagen has also been more daring than in former times, and has employed several internationally renowned architects to redesign several of the city’s spaces. After many years of living in the shadows of the aforementioned masters, Copenhagen has seen a boom in contemporary architecture, with a small but acclaimed group of younger architectural agencies leading the way, not content with playing second fiddle to the hallmarks of the icons of yesteryear.

Celebrating the launch of their 25th issue, music mag Soundvenue will be hosting a marathon party in three installments, with Vesterbro location hopping from early evening to early morning. Moving between Icelandic whiskey-haven Jolene to our new favorite Sunday hang-out, Dyrehaven, before finally ending up at meat-lovers’ paradise Kødboderne 18. All of it served with DJs and live bands as well as cheap booze.

Since its opening in 1847 as a central tapping and distribution location, the Carlsberg Brewery, wedged in between Valby and Vesterbro, has been a monumental force in both the growth of the Danish refreshment company, the Carlsberg Group, and in Danish and Scandinavian beer consumption.

Times have changed though, and the Carlsberg Group—now the fifth biggest brewery in the world and a major donor to Danish cultural events and institutions—decided to expand its expertise beyond hops and fermentation. After a necessary expansion, the breweries moved out of Copenhagen leaving its old headquarters unoccupied and ripe for an innovative rehabilitation.

Architectural contests were held to best exploit this large piece of prime real estate—with its old tapping halls, factories, offices and supply lines—smack in the middle of the city. The former walled-in factory, which is in fact more like a mini-city unto itself, spanning 33 hectares, will finally open it’s doors to the city after years of brewing in secret. In 2008 the realization of a plan to create a new urban center called Vores By or “Our City” complete with cafes, swimming pools, art galleries, movie theaters, food shops, commercial offices as well as living quarters and the commercial headquarters of Carlsberg began to break ground.

A collaborative effort involving many different architectural firms addressing a wide range of concerns, this long term project (emphasis on the long) will unfold over the course of ten to twenty years, in which time six new high rise towers will be erected and the older, fairy-tale red brick elements of the brewery and factory buildings will be updated and re-fitted in order to create a cohesive and open environment, looking towards the surrounding city areas of Vesterbro and Valby.

The Carlsberg Group seems to have learned from the less fortunate urban planning that has taken place in Copenhagen over the last decade. Instead of building up alienating towers, the planners are intent on creating a social space and one that is more lively than much of former failed city planning that has created ghost cities with a total lack of street life.

Important to the project is the fact that the space will architecturally celebrate the diversity of the city, creating an urban area that the developer has compared to being more like Christiania Freetown than some newer urban building projects in Copenhagen.

Prices for the prime real estate will range from expensive to more affordable, as the company will be renting out commercial space as well as ateliers and offices at cut rate prices for more creative companies, artists and musicians, most of whom will be hand picked by panel of curators and experts from the creative sectors.

The former walled-in factory, which is in fact more like a mini-city unto itself, spanning 33 hectares, will finally open it’s doors to the city after years of brewing in secret.

There are also plans to make the area CO2 neutral and incorporate green elements in all of the new spaces, including the preservation of old parks and other eco-friendly measures. Still in debate is whether a new subway station should be built in the area or if the existing train station, Enghave, should be moved a few kilometers in order to make transport to and from Vores By even easier. All of which would be paid for by Carlsberg, of course.

We were both born and raised in Copenhagen and, after traveling through most of the world, we still have a soft spot for this capital. It’s a city with plenty of the urban vibe, but also very livable: lots of trees and green areas give space for breathing during a hectic everyday life.

The greatest feature here is definitely the infrastructure designed for bicycling. Bicycles are a dominant feature in city life and reminds us to be environmentally aware and taking good care of our health. The Copenhagen mentality is unique compared to rest of the country and reflects the multi-ethnicity of Danish reality. We wish that more of this Copenhagen mentality would be reflected in the politics—and the public opinion of the country as a whole.

From the 5 – 7 September 2008, galleries, museums and exhibition halls will open their doors to show the best of what Copenhagen’s modern art scene has to offer when Kopenhagen Contemporary premiers.

During this weekend, about 50 leading galleries, museums and exhibition spaces open their doors and offer receptions, guided tours, artist talks and debate events. The participating venues cover a broad spectrum – from the firmly established to the newly opened galleries and exhibition spaces with an edge.

Whether it’s Distortion Festival or Copenhagen Fashion Week, I always look forward to coming back up north—either just hanging out, getting some crazy fashion shopping and popping done, or spinning at some seedy backyard venue.

What’s definitely a burner is the fact that there is far more of a female population than anywhere else I’ve been. Plus I love late sunsets. Bright evening skies during summertime make you feel perpetually awake.

Ambitions are high and the mission is clear for STRØM, which will be held for the second time in Copenhagen from 12-17 August 2008. Copenhageners and visitors to the city alike will have a unique opportunity to experience electronic music of an international standard. The STRØM schedule features live music events with an emphasis on variety and meticulous attention to detail.

After a successful debut in the summer of 2007, STRØM—Copenhagen’s festival of electronic music—will once again take centre stage at the inviting Enghaveparken venue located in Vesterbro. This year’s festival offers free concerts on Friday and Saturday until midnight, after which the music continues with live performances and DJs at clubs situated in Copenhagen’s new creative urban space, Kødbyen.

The six days of the festival spanning from Tuesday 12 August to Sunday 17 August will see the music spread across the city, from nightclubs and venues such as Vega, Culture Box, Rust, Nadsat and Stengade 30 to more alternative spaces such as Trinitatis Church near the Round Tower and downtown Mikkel Bryggers Gade near the Grand Theatre.

STRØM is organised by a steering committee consisting of representatives from ROSA—the Danish Rock Council, Amager Bio, DR (Danish Radio), Vega, Wonderful Copenhagen and monitors from the Municipality of Copenhagen, Art & Culture. Additional support for the festival comes from Kill Your Telly, JOJO DJ Team, KlubKlub, Nöjesguiden, Ström (electronic music program on Swedish radio), Banditte, Grand Theatre and Uorthodox.

Why should anybody like Copenhagen? It’s not as extreme as Berlin, not as rich and nice as Stockholm, not as exciting as London. I’ve lived here for the past 15 years and in this time I’ve traveled a minimum of 50 days a year or so—for the last four years. I basically tested all of the important European cities several times over. Even Skt Petersborg, Warsaw and Bergen!

And what I learned was that even though the rest of the world is exciting, Copenhagen always make a comforting home. And it always works.
