If you haven’t yet heard, the next generation of professional music exchange has taken over. Straight from Berlin via Stockholm, Soundcloud’s online platform allows for collaboration and communication in the production stages. A truly nifty tool, music producers world-wide are rejoicing and all those lazy Viennese producers can sit back and relax (in case they weren’t already) and let the program do the work.

Vienna 16, Grundsteingasse—Kruder’s G-Stone studio—assisted by noted multi-instrumentalists Christian Prommer and Roberto Di Gioia, Peter Kruder and Hell wrote and produced the “Day” half of Teufelswerk, the recent album of multi-disciplinary DJ Hell.

Vienna 6, Cheap Records—Erdem Tunakan re-animated the legendary label from back in the days and launched Cheap Rocks—a tribute to his Mod alter ego.

Those who fell in love with that little movie that could, 2006’s Little Miss Sunshine, surely remember the haunting soundtrack that accompanied Olive and her clan as they wheeled their way through the pageant world.

DeVotchKa, a Slavic-influenced Denver indie band, have released two albums since then but still employ accordions, mandolins, violins, trumpets and searing vocals to create a beautiful cacophony of sound. Here’s the best part: you can’t but help feel good after listening to them.

N.A.S.A., the combined forces of DJs Squeak-E-Clean and Zegon rallied the troups and managed to make one of the most awesomely guestlisted albums of all time.

While N.A.S.A. stands for North America/South America and contains a number of super- star artists from both coasts of the US, it is about as far from a tension-building geographical showdown as a record can get. Rather, their Anti debut The Spirit of Apollo was born with the righteous goal of bringing people together through music and art, and that is exactly what masterminds Sam Spiegel (Squeak-E-Clean) and Ze Gonzales (DJ Zegon) have done.

Austrian designers Wendy&Jim have released a line of men’s underwear designed by “the man himself”, DJ Hell of International DJ Gigolos.

The fashion darlings’ line comprises of three different styles in varying fabrics such as pure organic cotton, lightweight mesh and lace, and will be available in select boutiques across the world.

Hell and Wendy&Jim’s designers, Helga Schania and Herman Fankhauser, decided to work together after the label featured Hell’s music during their runway shows.

Art collecting powerhouse couple, Agnes and Karlheinz Essl may be aging, but their eye for contemporary art is always sharpening. Believing that “art enriches life and releases innovative forces,” the two have always sought to collect challenging works, beginning with the Vienna Actionists onward.

With a true respect for artists, they don’t treat contemporary art like candy, wanting a taste of each artist; rather they view each purchase is an investment, preferring groups of works to single pieces. Moving past an Austrian-heavy collection, the couple bought works by CoBrA group artists (Asger Jorn, Karel Appel and Pierre Alechinsky) and international painters like Frank Stella, Georg Baselitz, Gerhard Richter, Peter Halley and Jörg Immendorff.

Opening their Heinz Tesar-designed public museum in 1999, the Essls could now display a collection that boasted the likes of Damien Hirst, Paul McCarthy, Thomas Struth, Andreas Gursky, Bill Viola, Tony Oursler and Jonathan Meese.

In addition to public programming, the couple established the annual Essl Award for Central and South-Eastern Europe, continuing their commitment to young, challenging artists.

A perfect day excursion to the country, the museum offers free shuttles to the collection from central Vienna.

Event: Rosas / Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker: The Song - 17 Jul 21:00

A laboratory of images and sounds, movement and space, in which nine male dancers and one female dancer try to reposition the body in an ever-changing environment. In her latest choreography, “The Song”, the famous Belgian Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker examines the transgression of boundaries of the human body and the theatrical space together with light designer Ann Veronica Janssens and stage designer Michel François.

“The Song” sounds on the brink of post-humanism, at a place where humans start yielding themselves to their technological replicants. Does everything that is human become superfluous at this point? Is this the moment when the artist is called upon to leave everything s/he knows behind and start from scratch? In “The Song”, the theatre merges with the whole of the auditorium and the backstage. It transforms into a light, virtual place, with only the most basic props indicating its purpose.

The piece itself turns out to be a transit station between mathematical precision and human freedom, a performance that transgresses its ties and makes the hierarchies between weight and lightness, body and mind, the dancers and their surroundings disappear.

Some of the decor may not be in its original form after a fire consumed the restaurant and caused it to close for over a year. Reopening in September 2008, the unassuming trattoria still translates the ancient traditions of Italian cuisine, the antipasto, a wide variety of seafood specialities, a nip of homemade Lemoncella.

Somewhere in the corner of Passage 81, a blue neon sign flickers above a traditional Japanese restaurant. It is Soya, a destination restaurant for a quick, cheap bite after a hard day’s shopping—and its population reflects that. It is nothing short of swamped during lunch and dinner, making the slower hours in the late afternoon the ideal dining time.

Though its premises are unassuming, the eatery does yield an ambient outdoor courtyard garden good for summer months. Otherwise, it’s the smorgasbord of crowdpleasers that’s the main draw: tempura, bento boxes, sashimi and maki are the no-fail accompaniments to this respite from the Mariahilfer throngs.

Location: Filmhaus Kino

The Filmhaus Kino is a blip of a cinema folded into the historic tourist area of Spittelberg. It lays opposite the Theatre Am Spittelberg and is slightly obstructed from the naked eye with the looming doors of the Lux cafe restaurant; despite its inconspicuous location, it’s a gem of a find for those seeking locally produced flicks.

It helps that Stadtkino took it under its wing in 1994. Specialising in Austrian and international independent films, with only two shows at a time, Filmhaus Kino makes for an intimate and classy establishment, appeasing both those who ban megaplexes and pedestrians strolling on the outside cobblestone streets.

Every now and then a band comes along and challenges everything you thought you knew about music. The Brooklyn-based post-punk alt-rock band TV On the Radio is an ultra-magnetic force to be reckoned with.

Their latest album Dear Science is an imaginative, noisy dreamscape of punk, funk, rock and dirty soul. The band that can fuse together the strange with the beautiful so effortlessly has created their most mind-blowing collection to date. Their style is always complex but hypnotic. There’s dark sentiment, violently sensual musical compositions and vocals that haunt, distort, and sometimes soothe.

Highly recommended.

Stumble upon Auslage—”display” in English—and you’ll get a fast lesson in Architecture 101. With a layout executed with effortless modern minimalism, the night venue holds massive jagged booths, an impressive top-floor bar and built-in stairs running up along the side. All help construct a slightly funky, open space good for holding conversations.

Auslage is a slick option along the Gürtel, and a good break from those with a Chelsea habit. The crowd is fueled to dancing until the sun pops up, and the music covers a broad expanse of electronic music, from house and fidget to breaks, as well as the occasional hip hop DJ holding the mike.

The Whitest Boy Alive is the peppy side project of Erlend Øye, most notable for his whispy, Simon & Garfunkel-esque strums in Kings Of Convenience. WBA is Øye in fun mode, channelling the smooth pop of groups like Phoenix and Junior Boys, while employing house music structures (the influence of which no doubt stems from Øye’s collaborations with many club-ready producer).

Rules is far from challenging stuff—it’s hard to not bop your head along with much that’s here—but there’s a beauty in Øye’s smooth meshing of rhythm and subtle, supple melody.

Fidel Peugeot and Karl Emilio Pircher, founders of the oddly named Walking-Chair, harnessed their love of design not only into their atmospheric office, but an extended shop and gallery as well.

Swamped with prototypes and project sketches, the studio produces novel items like “Ping-meets-Pong” (a round ping pong table), light structures made from twinkling plastic bottles and other oddities that will have you look twice. They’ve lent their nose for curating too: find a hand-picked selection of smart products from other Viennese designers and friends abroad.

A quiet rumble emanates from this souterrain at Grundsteingasse. Primarily used as an artist’s studio, the space opens its doors three times a year for public exhibitions. The gallery selects an annual conceptual theme, with 2009’s as an open-for-interpretation title, “(self)curated.”

With a focus on showcasing artists from countries often excluded from a contemporary dialogue, the gallery seeks to create a cultural bridge between Eastern European art and the West.

Laying the framework for an artistic network by developing a dialogue between artists from all corners of the world, basement often hosts artists from Georgia, Mexico, Moldova, Armenia and other marginalized countries, establishing a visual dialogue between their work and the work of Viennese artists.

Vienna has a vibrant history of tradition and the avant-garde, boasting multicultural influences and a vibrant contemporary art scene. So it comes as no surprise that Vienna is hosting an ambitious and innovate project encouraging novel collaborations between galleries and curators.

18 Viennese contemporary art galleries have joined their forces working with a team of highly esteemed international curators. The participating galleries have formed into smaller groups of 4 to 5, choosing a curator or team of curators to work with. Each show will be spread across the 4 to 5 different gallery spaces allowing for multiple venues to play host to the same set of ideas.

The project, taken as a whole, allows for keen insights into curatorial styles and practices as well as the relationship between the galleries, curator, and works of art.

Founded by husband and wife team, Mario and Waltraud Mauroner, Galerie Mario Mauroner came to life in the couple’s home 35 years ago in Salzburg. Their home, limited in space and scope, only had room to fit a collection of big names—Calder, Klee and Picasso, to name a few.

In 2004 the gallery moved out of their private residence to a 600 square meter space in Vienna. No longer part of the couple’s living space, the gallery can now accommodate up to three different shows at once.

Galerie Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art (MAM, for short) focuses mainly on Mediterranean artists from Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Slovenia. With a strong concentration on sculpture and installation, the gallery also supports artists like Tony Cragg, Madeline Berkhemer, Antoni Tapies and Imi Knoebel.

In line with its historic location, Galerie nächst St. Stephan has been around for decades, but has yet to grow old. Sitting in its original city-center location since its founding in 1920, the gallery is no where near a relic of the past.

Story: Danube Horrors

3 more days to go till the first concert in 32 years of legendary italian prog-rock band GOBLIN, best known for their congenial collaboration with horror film master Dario Argento. The concert is a co-production with the reknown Donaufestival in Krems, a small town situated 70 km from Vienna.

Goblin will perform live in an a church from the 13. century. The band will play in the original line-up of 1975 when they released their first record “Profondo Rosso” – except for keyboardist and composer Claudio Simonetti. They will perform a selection of their classic songs and soundtracks - partly with a video component featuring excerpts of Argento’s movies – along with material from their 2005 album “Back to the Goblin” and new, yet unreleased pieces.

Afterwards, in the small hall of the festivals main venue, ZOMBIE ZOMBIE and TURZI (solo performance as Turzi Electronic Experience), both heavily influenced by Goblin’s groundbreaking work, pick-up Goblin’s legacy to catapult it into todays club culture. Meanwhile, more psychedelic madness - allthough of a slightly different type, drawing more from punk rock and free-form noise – will be curtesy of BLACK DICE and the BUTTHOLE SURFERS in the main hall.

A definite must go for all fans ob Goblin, the films of Dario Argento and George A. Romero, and the wide realm that opens up between weird psychedelica, prog-rock, italo disco and horror OST’s.

What started in 2007 as a small exhibition in the Passage of the Vienna Künstlerhaus has turned into a unique international festival that focuses on audio-visual art forms. From its start sound:frame has provided its spectators and participating artists with a wide range of activities: live performances, symposia, workshops, exhibitions of audio-visual installations, and a festival agenda in coordination with numerous Viennese clubs. Each year sound:frame stimulates the international discourse and aims to acquaint the public with the current standing and position of the visualization of electronic music.

Even at the time of its foundation in 1974, the program of the BAWAG Foundation was aimed at promoting the dialogue between art and those interested in it. The Bank für Arbeit und Wirtschaft (Bank for Work and Economy) was one of the first Austrian companies that had taken on responsibility of actively supporting and propagating art.

None of their exhibitions have been profit-oriented, and admission is still free. Since 1995, the BAWAG Foundation has focused on contemporary art. Apart from its exhibition work, the foundation also actively builds its private collection.

One of the most interesting specimens of the multifunctional store species: “re-cycling,” espresso, home furnishings, tailor-made suits and art bar squeezed into one space. Radlager claims derelict palazzi in Palermo, Neapolitan espresso bars and Berlin clubs as sources of inspiration.

Lovingly and expertly restored vintage bicycles—including collectible brands like Tommassini, Colnago and Puch—hang suspended from the ceiling. Meanwhile, a shiny ‘60s Faema espresso machine hisses away in the background, dispensing exquisite Neapolitan Passalacqua espresso: it’s not everyday you can savor a drop of this. Radlager also hosts exhibitions, DJ parties and other events.

Additionally, select pieces of furniture are for sale along side the craftsmanship of renowned Neapolitan tailors, Sartoria Pirozzi, who hold fittings and take orders every few weeks at Radlager’s loft.

Mario Neugebauer has a strong tendency to work on large-format canvas, using oil and lacquer as his common materials.His latest productions start to take a further step in leaving the two-dimensionality. They conquer space by developing into installations. Both the paintings and the installations are unied by their reflection and their play with room. room as the physical reality and room as a mentally perceived and constructed idea. Another connecting link of his dominant art forms might be the usage of tire traces. Apart from some illusionist- figurative- fragments, such as the tires, his paintings mostly show abstract elements, that can work for the beholder like a Rorschach test:

Neugebauer does not want to show the evident or the obvious, he wants to allow the contemplator his own individual and emotional perception

One dominant tendency in his work may be his handling of space and three-dimensionality, and another one a showing of “fragments”- rather than self-contained narrative pictures; after establishing illusionist and superjacent spaces – for example with his recurrent hanging elements (that might resemble ropes)- he then destabilizes this three-dimensionality with material interventions- such as colour splatters. His works may appear fragmentary like cinematic frames, because of a tension or motion provoked by overlapping spaces- that can leave the beholder with the feeling, that Neugebauers spaces might not end within their frames… Insofar his paintings can be understood as an invitation to meet your own imagination or memories. The subconscious.

Neugebauer is working at the University of Fine Arts, Vienna as an assistant for the „Sound lab“ and studying there at the painting class of Prof. Daniel Richter. In his early years a certain affinity for moto-cross and cars lead him to an apprenticeship as a coachwork constructor. Elements of this love, such as tires and their traces can still be found in his current paintings and installations. His second passion- music- brought him to the field of music production, composing and sound mastering- with a special focus on electronic music.

His work is generally known and appreciated for the fusion of bar crooning and electronic music- as for example his production „Louie Austen“. His painted works reflect a similar working method as his music: a rather compository than conceptual approach.
