Founded by a French threesome, Madame Claude takes the idea of a bar and flips it on its head. Literally.

Upon entering the former brothel, one encounters a maze-like layout and Lynchian decor stuck firmly to the ceiling. Everything is turned upside down: the pictures, the tables, the surveillance cameras and even the world map.

Thankfully, the free kicker table, table tennis on selected nights and live music—down in the basement, focusing mostly on experimental realms—have been kept right-side up. For these live bands, the entrance fee is delightfully pay-as-you-wish (anything between one and six euros will suffice). It’s a genuinely novel experience, but the bar might well leave you with, well, a distorted sense of gravity.

The whimsical one-day festival encourages all folks to take a whirlwind tour of botany, from Europe to Japan to the Himalayas in a 6,000-square-meter space consisting of 16 greenhouses.

The program is chock-full of crowd-pleasers, from oldies to jazz and live bands, and educational lectures on gardening and the environment at the adjacent museum. Bonus: The grand finale of fireworks at the Italian Garden at 10:45pm.

The sunny beaches of California haven’t made much of a musical impact on this San Diego two-piece. Brandishing a dark, lo-fi, reverb-heavy sound best described as electro psych rock, the duo’s talent was first showcased in their former incarnation as The Plot to Blow up the Eiffel Tower.

Often described as a darker counterpart to MGMT, this parallel begs a bit more context—the Crocodiles are more like MGMT fused with Thurston Moore, John Cale and Tom Verlaine.

A cult classic to say the least, this 1998 Coen brothers film has come to define a generation.

The plot—a case of mistaken identity that soon turns into a chain reaction of unfortunate events as LA slacker, Jeffrey “the Dude” Lebowski, finds himself embroiled in a kidnap/ransom saga involving the trophy wife of a millionaire with the same name—may create a narrative arc, but it’s the central characters, played by Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Julianne Moore (among others) that have earned this film a following so large that it demands an annual conference, Lebowski Fest.

Flawed characters, intentions gone awry, a barrel-load of one-liners—come see the absurd taken to the next level: it’s all dubbed in German.

Story: DMY: Adieu...Until Next Year

Even with Fashion Week and Bread & Butter in town, we still can’t help but feel nostalgia for the good old days of DMY.

For five days at the beginning of June it felt as if every nook and cranny of Berlin was filled to the brim with design. From large scale fair-like exhibitions at Arena and ÏMA Design Village to smaller installations and surprises bubbling up around the city, the makers of DMY truly used the city’s sprawling topography to their advantage.

We particularly enjoyed spending the afternoon at ÏMA Design Village, snacking on treats from the people at The Foodists and chatting with like-minded people as we tried to navigate the maze of objects installed throughout the 10,000 square meter space.

The true stars of the event were the designers exhibited in the Youngsters program, giving us hope for the future of design. Hopefully these guys will return next year, perhaps even earning the title of Allstars.

Minnesota-born, Los Angeles based artist/gardener/educator/architect Fritz Haeg is known for his work on a myriad of projects from home design to radical gardening and political activism.

In March, Haeg wrote a letter to the residents of Miami requesting applications from people willing to open their living rooms to a series of social salon gatherings. The selected hosts allowed their own furniture to be transported to the Museum of Contemporary Art while Haeg redesigned their living rooms to facilitate a social event.

In this workshop, the artist discusses his installation and salon series.

The collaborative duo, Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla, have been creating works that prod ideas of nationalism, history and democracy (and their role in an ever-globalized world) since 1995.

Their newly commissioned work, Compass, takes full advantage of the echoing hall—dividing the room into a split-level space, placing a dancer on the new upper level while visitors below hear only the gentle tapping of feet coming from above.

The work is accompanied by a screening of the pair’s film, How to Appear Invisible, which documents the final destruction of the neighboring Palast der Republik.

Straight from Berlin via Stockholm, Soundcloud’s online platform allows for collaboration and communication in the production stages. A truly nifty tool, music producers world-wide are rejoicing and all those lazy Viennese producers can sit back and relax (in case they weren’t already) and let the program do the work.

Vienna 16, Grundsteingasse—Kruder’s G-Stone studio—assisted by noted multi-instrumentalists Christian Prommer and Roberto Di Gioia, Peter Kruder and Hell wrote and produced the “Day” half of Teufelswerk, the recent album of multi-disciplinary DJ Hell.

We got Berlin’s favourite techno head, Sebrok, fresh off the Berlin Fashion Week, where he premiered his own clothing label, German Garment, back with a killer EP on Mini Sketch called, Vision.

This is pure peak time fillers from the fashion runways to the Sunday afternoons at Berghain.

Berlin based Sebrok – purveyor of tough and twitchy stripped back techno – has been spinning since the age of 16, this summer sees him release a duo of defining EP’s…

The first arrives on Dubfire’s SCI-TEC label on June 29th, a quartet of tracks Concorde, Airspeed, Falcon and The X; they perfectly showcase Sebrok’s superb talent for creating furtive dance floor hits.

It’s follow up due, for release on Davide Squillace’s Minisketch records on August 3rd, comes bearing the tracks Vision, Cheap & Awesome and Home for Sale. Both EPs are compiled on the Sebrok promo sampler currently doing the round. If you like your techno fidgety dance floor coercion then Sebrok is for you….

Following residencies at the likes of ‘Suite 15’, Sebrok took a giant leap forward with a 25 city tour alongside Thomas Schumacher and Thomas P. Heckman, and a residency at the cult Berlin club Tresor. Around this time, he was also gaining valuable insider knowledge as Monika Kruse’s personal assistant.

2004 saw Sebrok team up with Marc Miroir and Joachim Spieth to launch PASO Music. His 2005 single Some Kind Of Monster was a hit with many of the worlds elite DJ’s, and the label now proudly represents artists including Tony Rohr, Maxime Dangles, Silversurfer, Joachim Spieth and Gregor Tresher.

After a stretch in the corporate world of MTV and establishing his own Berlin based fashion label German Garment, Sebrok returned to his favoured career last year with an EP containing the tracks Pyrolator, Boob Tube and Almost Famous, a big hit with such luminaries as Dubfire, Miss Kittin, Slam, Speedy J and Chris Liebing …

Coming across like Chuck Berry having a garage party with the Stones, Strange Boys make it hard to resist their swaggering exuberance. Vocalist Ryan Sambol’s voice has a distinctly Bob Dylan-esque drawl, and while the rest of the band won’t win any awards for originality either, should we really care in the midst of such youthful frivolity?

Bauhaus Archive/Museum of Design in Berlin, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and the Foundation of Weimar Classics present the joint exhibition “The Bauhaus Model,” an examination of the school’s cultural and historical impact in the art world and beyond.

Martin-Gropius Bau is, of course, the most fitting place to hold the exhibition: its namesake architect was the great uncle of Walter Gropius, modern architect and founder of the Bauhaus School.

On a recent trip to the Far East, Parisian beatnik Onra raided the flea markets and vinyl stores in India. On his return to France, he plundered his new source material and created the brilliant 1.0.8.

For such sample-heavy hip hop, the album sounds amazingly fresh and vibrant. The likes of J.Dilla and Madlib are huge reference points, but the originality of the sources and the distinctly exotic, Eastern flavor to his work sets Onra apart from some of the more formulaic releases in this genre.

The artist is now on a voyage of discovery through China scouring for new sound snippets. It’s going to be fascinating to see what quirky offcuts he found to play with this time.

Palais de Tokyo is back at it again, following up their makeshift sleeping hotel “Everland” with a stunning glass-paneled rooftop restaurant lit up in the incandescent shades of a moon ring. Executive chef Gilles Stassart brushes up on altitude-friendly recipes for the 12 guests lucky enough to have scored a reservation online for the 60-80 Euros meal.

The restaurant opened on July 1st, 2009 and is officially open for one year; it’s also part of the Art Home project, which has the museum offering various culinary and food-related events. Picture this: Vocalist Stefania Pendretti spews blood-curdling, indecipherable howls while Bruno Dorella lays waste to his two remaining drums like a Neolithic caveman.

That’s right, Milanese grindcore duo OvO return to Berlin after a well-received support slot for Lightning Bolt at Festsaal last year.

It’s indeed a mesmerizing experience. The two possess such awesome power that the lack of instrumentation makes no difference. They brutally extract a pulsating sound mass that sounds like something from the Evil Dead franchise being disemboweled by an Amazonian drum tribe.

The Father turns 60. His large family gathers to celebrate him on a castle. Everybody likes and respects the father deeply…or do they? The Youngest Son is trying to live up to The Father’s expectations. He is running a grill-bar in a dirty part of Copenhagen. The oldest son runs a restaurant in France, while the sister is a lawyer. The older sister has recently committed suicide and the father asks the oldest son to say a few words about her, because he is afraid he will break into tears if he does it himself. The oldest son agrees without arguments. Actually he has already written two speeches. A yellow and a green one. By the table, he asks the father to pick a speech. The father chooses green. The oldest son announces that this is the Speech of Truth. Everybody laughs, except for the father who gets a nervous look on his face. For he knows that the oldest son is about to reveal the secret of why the oldest sister killed herself.

Set in Spain, this is a generational story of two daughters who lost their parents as children during a fire: a good mother mother carrying a hard life upon her shoulders, and an illegal hairdresser whose shop is the meeting point for all the neighbourhood gossips. When the mother’s drunken and abusive partner assaults her daughter, catastrophy strikes. The daughter murders the partner in self defence and the mother does all that she can to protect her little girl being caught out by her aunt, or the nosey townspeople. But the aunt has a family secret of her own to keep which she divulges to the daughter, that would put the mother on an emotional rollercoaster. Will the truth be revealed?

His friend turns out to be a wanted criminal and when the police turn up, Lloyd must help in the pursuit.

What Fuerzabruta did for dance, Wet Sounds promises to do for music. After touring the UK over the last month, the group brings its underwater sound art gallery to Clissold Pool and presents a special evening featuring over- and underwater sound systems.

To mark the end of the tour, they have invited renowned experimental artist Francisco Lopez as part of a duo with London-based Vibraphonist Stefano Tedesco, Leafcutter John & Ton Haines and Sonic Fiction.

Since sound travels four times faster in water you are able to perceive the sound through your bones and body, making this a one off chance to experience a truly unique sound environment. Advance booking is recommended.

Living in apartments crammed to the ceilings with books, six artists founded this bookstore and sometime gallery in the ‘80s as a means alleviate their living spaces.

An alter to artist’s publications, Boekie Woekie specializes in artist’s books—primarily self-published works. With each of the thousands of titles sold on consignment, this shrine to the handmade art of publishing is home to cramped tables and shelves filled to the brim with creative treasures.

More a place for collectors than window shoppers, it is nevertheless easy to lose a few hours browsing the delicate, hand-sewn and zine-like artistic musings made by both local and international figures.

Not wanting to turn their backs on their original calling, the owners also host small exhibitions and in-store readings.
