Tim Sweeney, who’s been running the legendary WNYU show Beats in Space for well over a decade, is not only a moderator, but a serious DJ himself and boasts a knowledge of B-sides and rare pressings that would humble any resident DJ, label manager or even, gasp!, record store clerk. Joining up with him are the power duo Beautiful Swimmers, whose nights in Washington’s U-Street Music Hall have become legendary, and that’s not to mention their heady italo-imbibed “borg funk”. Dada Disco, themselves notable Berlin groove-spotters, round off the roster.

Loftus Hall
Maybachufer 48, 12045 Berlin, Germany
http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?327104

Download vCal

More

W.A.V.E. examines how we exist and transform in an increasingly complex urban environment—moving from natural to artificial and even alienated spaces, and from the sensory experience of social spaces to the virtual network. The work evolves around the solitary existence of a human figure inside a large city-matrix, a virtual, interactive network integrating LED-light, sound installation and projections.

Refractive Index launches a multi-city nighttime installation programme for large-scale public digital media displays. In collaboration with London 2012 Creative Programming and the BBC Big Screens programme, and graphics programmers Tom Schofield and David Gauthier, this series of after-dark installation projects for public media facades continues work looking at the way digital media infrastructure changes our view of ourselves.

As concrete and systematic the world we live in seems to be, it is the product of decades of visionary designs, inventions, and creations by imaginative thinkers who have envisioned a world beyond the one they lived in. Production designers who are tasked with creating entirely new worlds and alternate universes must be able to think freely and outside of the box in order to imagine and render these narrative worlds. In this session, various production designers will explain how screenwriters, filmmakers, and producers can create entirely new worlds where their films will be set.
Three couples in crisis each seek advice at therapy sessions and argue over infidelities, abortion and separate bedrooms. Accusations, fears and traumas all come up, with separation very much on the cards. These case studies reveal areas of conflict, structures and relationship patterns all of a universal nature. The clients are played by actors, the therapists work in the field in real life and are not playing a role. Resembling nothing so much as a public experiment, this artificial set-up yields touching moments full of emotion.

As in his earlier works Tuya’s Marriage (which won the Golden Bear in 2006) and Apart Together (which screened at the Berlinale in 2010) Wang Quan’an’s new work focuses once again on the fortunes of a female protagonist.

Showing as part of the competition, this epic takes place towards the end of imperial China in a period of dramatic political and social upheaval. The film is set in the eponymous White Deer Village in Shaanxi Province where the two most important families – Bai and Lu – and their sons have always lived together in peace. But the turmoil leads to a fierce struggle for land ownership. A young woman new to the village soon finds herself caught between the two camps. Wang Quan’an uses the story of these two families as a metaphor for the fate of the Chinese people as first Chinese war lords are overrun by Japanese invaders, then civil war follows hot on the heels of the Second World War and finally the victorious Maoists begin waving their red flags.

In March 1998 director and producer Ulrich Schamoni – who was dying of leukaemia at the time – documented life in his house in Berlin’s Grunewald district. Schamoni kept on filming until just a few days before his death. The result was a moving and colourful chronicle amounting to a total of 170 hours of tape. Interspersing a selection of these images with excerpts from Schamoni’s films such as ES and CHAPEAU CLAQUE, Schamoni’s photographer daughter Ulrike Schamoni and editor Grete Jentzen have created a loving tribute to a generous and multifaceted man. Equipped with his own brand of creativity and joie de vivre, but also blessed with laconic, often self-parodying wit, Ulrich Schamoni managed to defy his tragic illness and live an inspired life – as long as he could.

Joyce Vincent’s body wasn’t discovered for three years, surrounded by Christmas presents she had been wrapping, and with the TV still on. Newspaper reports offered few details of her life, not even a photograph.

Interweaving interviews with imagined scenes from Joyce’s life, Dreams of a Life is an imaginative, powerful, multilayered quest, and is not only a portrait of Joyce but a portrait of London in the eighties—the City, music, and race. It is a film about urban lives, contemporary life, and how, like Joyce, we are all different things to different people. It is about how little we may ever know each other, but nevertheless, how much we can love.

Babylon: Mitte
Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse 30, 10178 Berlin, Germany
http://www.berlinfilmsociety.com/#2698332/Mon-13th-Feb-20-30-Dreams-of-a-Life-Director-Q-A

Download vCal

More

It’s well-known among locals. And it’s pushing to be a more exciting venue for entertaining a younger generation of drinkers. That said, thankfully the pub’s traditional charms haven’t fallen victim to the refurbishments – in fact, the owners are determined to regain its reputation by hosting club nights, gigs and workshops while respecting its almost 300 year heritage.

Split over two floors and reached via an alleyway off Hackney Road, the Sebright Arms features an open-plan ground floor complete with wood panelling and a spacious, fully-functioning venue space downstairs. For its launch, market meat-champions Lucky Chip are taking over the kitchen to serve up their locally-famed burgers, hand cut fries and hot dogs. Meanwhile the charming (for a pub) staff have a range of London-based microbrewery ales to draw and a mean cask cider. And while you’re enjoying your pint, ask them for one of the many stories from the pub’s eventful past. From a performance by Charlie Chaplin over police assault by an angry mob in 1837, to why and when the Seabright became the Sebright Arms, the place is bursting with history.

31-35 Coate St, E2 9AG London, United Kingdom
Mon-Wed, 17:00-23:00; Thu-Sat, 17:00-00:00; Sun: 12:00-22:30
+442077290937
http://www.sebrightarms.co.uk
mail@sebrightarms.co.uk
[National] at Cambridge Heath; [Central] at Bethnal Green

Download vCard

More

Renowned for its succulent, authentic American dishes, it became so popular that after just one summer, Richard Turner (Hawksmoor) and Simon Anderson (Albion, Islington) offered their help in setting the Pitt Cue boys up with this new, permanent residency just behind Soho’s Carnaby Street.

Split over two floors (downstairs dining, upstairs bar), Pitt Cue Co. is downright tiny (they say they can seat 30, but at 20 it starts feeling pretty full) but the place just oozes rustic, carnivorous charm. From their chintzy lace-curtained windows, Pitt Cue’s sole aim is to satisfy their ravenous customers for just £10, offering a choice of meaty mains (think Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket, Pork Ribs) alongside a changing list of specials. The drinks menu, meanwhile, is rounded off with top local and US beers, a good range of bourbons, cocktails and of course the infamous house Pickleback – a shot each of bourbon and pickle brine, served up with an optional side of pork crackling. Try it. After all, you only live once.

1 Newburgh St, W1F 7RB London, United Kingdom
Mon-Sat, 12:00-23:00; Sun, 12:00-18:00
http://www.pittcue.co.uk
info@pittcue.co.uk
[Central] at Oxford Circus

Download vCard

More

For this yearly event, artists are invited to show their (performative) art in Paradiso. The theme for this year is “The Talent Show”. It’s a wink towards the immense amount of talent shows of today and the participating artists will showcase their best tricks. A sequence of performances, video art, installations and music will take place and contributions from the following artists can be expected: Guido van der Werve (NL), Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Uta Eisenreich (DE), Sina Khani (Iran), Ieke Trinks (NL), Renée van Trier (NL), Jeroen Offerman (NL), Isabelle Schiltz (BE), Nina Yuen (Hawaï) and Persijn Broersen & Margit Lukács (NL).

A glimpse of what awaits the evening:

Nederlands Dans Theater 2 will perform the piece “Shutters Shut”: a special dance where the dancers will perform their own sign language in which they translate the words of Gertrude Stein who will cite her poem ‘If I told him’. All in 4 minutes.

Uta Eisenreich (DE) is a photographer but she will create beautiful still life pieces with objects in a playful manner. The objects will be connected to sounds with which she will narrate as she creates.

Ieke Trinks (NL) will present ‘head, boxes, ceiling’ – an astonishing performance at the entrance where Trinks will place as many boxes as possible upon her head.

Nina Yuen (Hawaï,) presents her new movie Juanita. A dreamy and hypnotic piece where she paints elegant lingerie with a sky blue glitter nail polish on her pantyhose as the ocean washes over her.

More

The first in a series of cultural projects, ‘Make Something from Nothing’ featured a unique sound sculpture created by Yuri Suzuki, in collaboration with DJ Al Fingers, singer/songwriter Gappy Ranks and designer Matthew Kneebone.

Suzuki is famous for his home made music machines—a goldfish theremin machine and a flute made from an electric kettle amongst many others. However, The Red Stripe® Make Something From Nothing project is his most audacious piece of work to date. The immense sculpture was transformed from thousands of Red Stripe cans—some of which were collected at this year’s Notting Hill carnival—into a a towering fully functioning sound sculpture, that draws inspiration from bass heavy Jamaican sound systems.

Launched on 16th November with an event at Village Underground, the night showcased this specially commissioned 2.5 meter high sound sculpture and was put through its paces by the blinding DJ talents of Hessel Audio’s Ben UFO, NMBERS co-founder Spencer and Al Fingers playing rare Greensleeves recordings. Yuri Suzuki said, “The DIY culture is a big part of Jamaica and it’s obviously a big part of my work. From the sound systems that started in the ghettos of Kingston to the attitude of the Jamaican people it’s a place where if you don’t do it yourself, it isn’t going to happen. Making something musical from what others might discard is what Red Stripe® and making something from nothing is inspired by Jamaica’s DIY culture.”

The ‘Make with a Red Stripe’ series, celebrates the music and DIY culture of the brand’s Jamaican roots. More collaborations are in the pipeline, for more information check the Red Stripe Facebook page.

More

Yet the city’s status as a fashion capital is no recent phenomenon and entails more than just clothing. Its prominence dates back to the 16th century when Milan became a pivotal spot for Renaissance denizens, even deriving its name from the old English word “milaner”, denoting a purveyor of jewellery, hats, fine cloth and luxury goods. Nowadays you can drop in town for either one of the Fashion Weeks that take place and preview what Londoners and New Yorkers will be wearing in a year’s time.

For the first time ever, the NY-based brand is available in the UK as an independent standalone store (and when it launched was also the only one in Europe).

The boutique itself is small but as selectively stocked as you’d expect, with dark wooden floors and clean white walls.

Lang fans will be pleased to learn that the brand’s legacy has been preserved under the new design duo, Nicole and Michael Colovos. Instead of re-inventing the wheel, the pair have maintained the brand’s signature style, resulting in elegant yet austere designs that are definitely worth checking out. Their collections feature slim cut dresses, suits and a small range of leather accessories, all predominantly in black, white and shades of grey, plus the odd statement piece thrown in for good measure.

237 Westbourne Grove, W11 2RU London, United Kingdom
Mon-Wed, 10:00-18:00; Thu, 10:00-17:00; Fri-Sat, 10:00-18:30; Sun, 12:00-17:00
+442079851184
http://www.helmutlang.com
westbourne@helmutlang.eu
[Central] at Notting Hill

Download vCard

More

Instead, the cuisine at this relaxed little bar on Soho’s Dean Street sports a heavy French influence, as do the natural and biodynamic wines.

The food menu houses a large selection of tapas-sized bites (perfect for sharing if you’re feeling a bit peckish) and a choice of slightly larger and regular-sized plates (though never more than three of each). Risotto, sea food and lamb dishes are some of the house staples, always perfectly executed and served with a little twist – something which shouldn’t come as a surprise since Julian Biggs, chef de cuisine, is also the former executive chef from Mark Hix’s eponymous and praised restaurant group.

Ultimately, Ducksoup has the relaxed atmosphere of a modern bistro. It’s a place where you drop in for a glass of good wine, then somehow forget to leave because you’ve completely lost track of time. Be sure to try the delicious chocolate mousse or, alternatively, opt for their killer selection of fine French cheeses to round of your meal.

41 Dean St, W1D 4PY London, United Kingdom
Mon-Sat, 12:00-22:30; Sun, 13:00-18:00
+442072874599
http://www.ducksoupsoho.co.uk
restaurant@ducksoupsoho.co.uk
[Piccadilly] at Leicester Square

Download vCard

More

While all these social phenomena are diverse, one thing in common is that they involve information dissemination that happens in a synchronized way, evoking a certain response from the population at once.”

Dmitry Paranyushkin from Nodus Labs examines how epidemic theories from network science can be used to study social media trends.
Event: Portable Monuments - 10 Feb 12:00

Galerie Gabriel Rolt present their first solo exhibition of works by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin. The work of this internationally renowned, UK-based duo interrogates the documentary and ethnographic traditions of photography.

Poor Monuments, a series of 85 works on paper, is a contemporary re-working of The War Primer, a book by Bertolt Brecht published in 1955. The War Primer comprises of images clipped from newspapers, each accompanied by a four-line poem. The title of the book deliberately recalls the textbooks that were used to teach elementary school children how to read. Brecht’s book is a practical manual into how to ‘read’ photographs.

For each image that Brecht originally chose, Broomberg and Chanarin have found an equivalent from our present age. However, where Brecht’s War Primer was concerned with images of the Second World War, Broomberg and Chanarin are concerned with images generated by both sides of the so-called “War on Terror”.

“Don’t start with the good old things but the bad new ones” Brecht famously said, and in this spirit Broomberg and Chanarin have gathered their material from the internet—compressing, uploading, ripping, squeezing, reformatting and re-editing often anonymous images—rather than sifting through newspapers with a pair of scissors.

Galerie Gabriel Rolt
Elandsgracht 34, 1016 TW Amsterdam, Netherlands
http://www.gabrielrolt.com/exhibitionPR.aspx?pos=1&page=1

Download vCal

More

While the rest of the space includes a state-of-the-art 3D screening room, spa and an intimate club aimed at both guests and locals alike.
With roots (and on original store) in Stoke Newington, the daughter and mother team of Ariana and Hanna Weldon opened their new space in the summer of 2011, offering beautiful vintage attire from coveted names like Balenciaga, McQueen, Yohji Yamamoto, Maison Martin Margiela and Chanel… This is vintage fashion respected, framed, and accentuated. But such publicity has had no hinderance on the establishment – now two locations strong (the other is around the corner at 15 Maiden Lane) and proudly serving ‘Baby Googoo’.

The controversy doesn’t end there – their menu includes ice cream cocktails (over 18s only) – ‘Miss Whiplash’ is laced with raspberry vodka whilst ‘Molotoffee’ is flambéed at your table. With such options on offer you won’t be surprised to learn that the interior design is provocatively themed with a punk edge to it. Try it if you’re brave enough. We dare you.

23/47 The Market Building, South Piazza, WC2E8RF London, United Kingdom
Mon-Sun, 11:00-20:00
+4402086168694
http://www.theicecreamists.com/
office@theicecreamists.com
Covent Garden [Piccadilly]

Download vCard

More

Whilst the original shop hollers from the East, their Covent Garden branch by no means stands in its shadows – launched with a ceremonial parade no less and has since been named one of the “Ten Best shops in West London” by the Guardian. The bright pink shop front’s not hard to miss so there’s no excuse to miss out on this British design treasure trove.

44 Monmouth Street, WC2H 9EP London, United Kingdom
Mon-Wed, 11:00-19:00; Thurs, 11:00-20:00; Fri-Sat, 11:00-19:00; Sun, 12:00-17:00
+442078362685
http://www.tattydevine.com/
care@tattydevine.com
Covent Garden [Piccadilly]

Download vCard

More

But trace it back to its roots and you’ll find yourself at a small little shop on Brick Lane. As one of the first shops to set up camp in the area, Rosie Wolfenden and Harriet Vine (aka Tatty Devine) are trendsetters in every sense of the word.

This is no ordinary restaurant – a Damian Hirst casually hangs from the ceiling, with a Sarah Lucas mobile not too far away. Then there’s a Matt Collishaw, an Angus Fairhurst, oh and an Andy Warhol that casually line the walls.

Hix really is the best of the best and yet somehow they amazingly maintain a very reasonably priced menu – with their Pre & Post theatre menu for example you can expect to get two courses for £17.50 or three for £22.50. The only problem is that your theatre performance just might not seem quite as good in comparison. Spread the word : give a Hix Gift Voucher this Christmas.

66-70 Brewer Street, W1F 9UP London, United Kingdom
Mon-Sun, 12:00-23:00
+4402072923518
http://www.hixsoho.co.uk/
Piccadilly Circus [Piccadilly] [Bakerloo]

Download vCard

More

Foremostly there’s really good wine. That’s also reasonably priced (due to only a very marginal markup). And depending how thirsty you are, are available to order by the glass, carafe or bottle. And what’s more is regularly updated (once all ten cases are lapped up). An equally neat food menu is available to accompany it. And a cover charge that’s actually worth paying (tip: order the pungent roasted garlic and saucisson sec, team it with the fresh baguette supplied in ample quantities et voila). An incredibly convenient location. But what’s more it’s an incredibly pleasant addition to the location – seemingly a million miles away from other tourist traps in its precincts. An absence of needless gimmicks and pretence, in place a concept that actually benefits its customers. We make that 8 reasons more than necessary to give this place a try.

16 Endell Street, WC2H 9BD London, United Kingdom
Mon-Sat, 12:00-15:00 & 18:00-23:00
+442078366801
http://www.the10cases.co.uk
reservations@10cases.co.uk
Covent Garden [Piccadilly]

Download vCard

More
