(Huffington Post) - This week’s episode of “Family Guy” (Sun., 9 p.m. EST on Fox) was for fans who find Ricky Gervais annoying. Rather than go for the kind of sharp humor that’s made him a favorite — though not by all — of the Golden Globes in recent years, Gervais instead sticks with aquatic puns, laughing more at his own fishy jokes than anyone else save Peter.

At first, Peter thinks he’s an absolute delight, and is pleased when the dolphin shows up at his doorstep and asks if he can move in. The two met in the ocean when Peter went there to try and fish up a Mercedes-Benz among many that had accidentally been sunk there. As the episode progressed, though, Peter grew more and more disenchanted with his new boarder. When he discovered that what the dolphin really wants is to be reunited with his love, Peter came up with an elaborate and ultimately unnecessary plan to reunite the two.

While this was happening, Brian was proving what a terrible guardian he would be. After discovering that the daycare Stewie is staying at is about as horrible and dangerous a place as possible, his intentions to shut it down are stopped when he realizes she’s a hot chick. He continues to subject Stewie and the other kids in her care to the horrifically abusive environment up to the point he discovers she has a boyfriend. Then, suddenly, his righteous anger comes through and he has her arrested. Certainly not behavior to emulate or aspire to.

The first preview finds Gervais in action-hero mode, running from an explosion. (Spoiler alert: In the actual ad, he gets a grenade lobbed his way after he turns down a Facebook friend request.)

It’s part of a campaign by Time Warner to remind customers of the company’s full range of services — from broadband to apps — besides just cable. The final version of the ad will invite viewers to “enjoy” Showtime, Netflix, ESPN, and Facebook “better.”

The idea is to make viewers think of Time Warner as a means to popular services, so customers won’t just focus on “the occasional experience of having cable installed, upgraded or fixed,” Ogilvy North America CEO John Seifert told The New York Times this week.

Ricky… why have you started doing commercials? They are like you say — beneath you!

(Huffington Post) – As Ricky Gervais took his highly-anticipated third turn hosting the Golden Globe Awards earlier this month, it seemed like the whole world was watching to see who he’d insult, and how hard he’d do it. One might think that global audience would include Gervais’s own best friend, but all bets are off when it comes to Karl Pilkington.

The remarkably honest — and a bit different – star of the Gervais-produced “An Idiot Abroad,” Pilkington spoke with The Huffington Post on the Friday following his friend’s performance. He was in London during the Globes, and as he told HuffPost, he had no interest in watching the show — or any other award show, period.

What did you think of Ricky’s Golden Globes performance?

Honest to God, I haven’t seen it. What you’ve got to remember is, it’s on at like, what time would it be? Three in the morning or something over here. I didn’t see it last year either. I don’t really watch telly that much. I play cards and listen to music and stuff like that and if I do watch telly, it’s either a film or a nature program or something. He did all right though, didn’t he? I’ve seen in the paper some people say oh he wasn’t hard enough and some people said he was kind, so whatever. You can’t please everyone all the time. There are people who probably hate “An Idiot Abroad,” but if you try and please everyone all the time you end up not pleasing anyone. So I think he did alright, from what I read about. I’m sure it’s on YouTube. But even if I was up, I think even if it was on 7 p.m. our time, I wouldn’t have watched it, just because I don’t watch awards shows. I don’t even go to them if I’m up for one, I just find them quite boring.

Do you find them boring if you win?

If I win an award? No, I don’t really know what they’re about in a way. I don’t know what you’re meant to get. I’ve never won many awards, I didn’t get certificates for swimming or anything. The award… I don’t know what it’s meant to do — it’s just more clutter around me house, really. I don’t have ornaments because they don’t do anything, so it’s never been me. Maybe it’s because I’ve never won much, but I don’t go to them now. I’m up for a couple of awards here for the program, but I don’t like to go to them. Ricky and Steve invited me to the BAFTAs about ten years ago and I went to that and I had to buy a suit. I don’t know why you’ve got to wear a suit to watch people pick up awards, and that was the last time I went and I said I’d never do that again, and I haven’t. And I don’t intend to.

Would you go if you could go in jeans and sneakers?

I’m not saying you should go in stinking or not having a bath or a shave or something, but just a shirt and a pair of pants. I don’t know what it’s all about. I don’t know why they feel they have to even put it on the TV. I say have the night and give people the awards, but why do people want to watch people win awards? What are they getting out of it? I don’t quite get it. Because they have awards all the time; there’s awards for butchers, the best meat served, but they don’t televise it. I don’t know why they do it for films or TV programs. Either the people like watching the show and they watch it, or they don’t like it and they don’t watch it. Why would you then want to see someone pick up an award for it? There’s a lot of things in life I don’t understand and that’s just one of them.

Do you think it’s actors’ ego?

You can’t say they’re all the same. I don’t know. All I know is that I don’t like those sort of nights out. I mean, I don’t really go out at night in terms of noisy, busy places; I prefer more of a quiet corner somewhere. So straight away, even if it wasn’t for actors — if it was the butchers’ awards and I was a butcher — I wouldn’t go anyway. So it doesn’t have to do with the company, it’s just being out with a load of people on a sort of organized, fun night. I just don’t do it. There’s something about it that I just don’t like.

In an interview on Thursday with “Good Day L.A.” (weekdays on Fox) Gervais reflected on seeing his comedy labeled as offensive, and urged viewers, and the targets of his barbs, to take the jokes in the spirit of parody and fun.

Gervais began the interview by pushing back against the notion that the HFPA or NBC executives had censored some of his more risque material last year. “I think that was a rumor, that I was held back,” he clarified.

The comedian then reflected on not being able to please everyone, and offered a bit of his game-plan for Sunday night. “If you do anything that’s slightly contentious, some people will get offended. In fact, anything you say, someone somewhere in the world will be offended by it,” Gervais lamented. “I’m gonna go out, I’m gonna say what I want, I’m gonna have fun, and I’m gonna hope that people take it in the way it was intended, which was a laugh,” he said.

But Gervais couldn’t resist taking a shot at critics who seem to be almost hoping to be offended by his material. “I never try to offend people, that’s too easy. Some people are always going to be offended by what you say, but just because you’re offended, that doesn’t make you right,” he noted. At that point, Jillian Reynolds told Gervais that she hoped some people would be offended by his jokes. He let out one of his trademark high-pitched chuckles and assured her that, “I will, don’t worry. I can’t help it!”

They let USA TODAY know at the Palm Springs International Film Festival gala Saturday night. Gervais, it turns out, has one pretty big fan in his corner.

“I really like him. He makes me laugh,” said George Clooney, who will be bringing girlfriend Stacy Keibler as his date to the big show. “I was backstage with him, I guess it was at the Emmys and we had a really fun time. I enjoy him so I’m looking forward to it.”

“He’s brilliant and he should host every awards ceremony ever, in my opinion,” seconded Clooney’s Descendents co-star, Judy Greer.

How does Moneyball’s Brad Pitt feel about Gervais’ return?

“Why not?” said Pitt.

The show, which will get its US premiere on February 19th on HBO, has just finished season one in the UK and wasn’t as well received as all Gervais’s previous projects. Having watched the show it comes as somewhat of a surprise that it has had a second season confirmed before being aired in the US. Gervais said the second season will air in spring 2013.

Ricky, who will host his third Golden Globes ceremony in January, also confirmed that Warwick Davis is to appear in a special episode of An Idiot Abroad alongside Gervais’s muse Karl Pilkington. The episode will be called The Short Way Round (A spoof on Ewan McGregors ‘The Long Way Round’) and will air late in 2012.

Sir Sean Connery is reportedly close to signing up for a part in the comedy show, which would see the James Bond actor play Ricky Gervais’ onscreen friend in the retirement home.

A source told The Sun: ‘They’re filming a pilot in London. It’s early days but it looks brilliant.

‘Ricky is in charge of the project and plays a man called Derek, living in an old people’s home, while Sean has been asked to play his elderly mate in the home.’

The funnyman is thought to be keen to get his new show off the ground because his current observational comedy series Life’s Too Short – which stars diminutive actor Warwick Davis as a fictionalised version of himself – is reportedly struggling to get ‘great’ viewing figures.

The insider added: ‘Ricky is keen to get it in the bag because his sitcom Life’s Too Short hasn’t been getting great viewing figures.’

Ricky has previously defended the comedy series against accusations it is offensive, and he doesn’t think people should automatically come to a conclusion the show will mock short people just because it features a dwarf in the lead role.

He explained: ‘It’s so funny because people are already saying “controversial new comedy,” or, “cruel comedy.”

‘Why do they say that? Is it because there’s a dwarf involved, in which case the prejudice is theirs. They’re thinking it has to be cruel because there’s a dwarf, so we have to be making jokes about dwarfs?’

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is apparently not afraid of controversies. Despite receiving complaints about Ricky Gervais’ rude jokes at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, the association is bringing back the British comedian to host the upcoming 69th annual ceremony.

The decision to hire Gervais was made after HFPA met with a top official at NBC, which will air the prize-giving event. Doug Vaughan, senior vice president of special events and late night programming at the network, said in a statement, “Ricky is delighted to be coming back. He said the Golden Globes show is the most fun he has ever had.”

Soon after his hosting gig was made official, Gervais took to Twitter to jokingly hint at his possible materials. “Just told Billy Crystal he’d better not use any of my holocaust or pedophile material at The Oscars. He agreed (true),” he wrote and posted his picture with Crystal who was recently appointed as the 2012 Oscar host.

2012 Golden Globes will be held on January 15 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. It would be the third time in a row Gervais serving as a host at the event that recognizes the best in TV and movie. In the previous 68th ceremony, the “Life’s Too Short” creator was deemed crossing the line with his jokes which targeted some A-list stars, such as Charlie Sheenand Johnny Depp, and “famous scientologists”.
