You’re always being cultivated by something. The algorithm. The news cycle. Your workplace. Your phone. So the real question isn’t whether you’re being shaped. It’s who’s holding the shovel.

We discussed this question with Richard Kannwischer, senior pastor of Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and author of the new book Cultivate: How God Grows the Fruit of the Spirit Within Us. He and his wife Kelly joined me for a conversation on the podcast this week and we talked about the rage of the age creeping into our homes, why the fruit of the Spirit is one fruit and not nine, and the simple daily practice Richard says will train real joy into a marriage faster than anything else.

The first thing we discussed was how we call the “fruits” of the Spirit, plural, like a basket you can pick and choose from. But that’s not what Paul wrote. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). Richard put it this way: “Let’s get the clarification on the plural. It’s the fruit of the spirit. It’s one fruit.” You don’t get to say gentleness isn’t for you, or peace isn’t your thing. It’s one fruit, and we’re called to grow all of it, together, in partnership with God.

That word “grow” matters. Richard told me a story about a dog trainer who came to his house and, after watching his dog sit and stay on command, said something that stopped him cold: “Your dog knows tricks, but your dog isn’t trained.” Many of us know the outward appearance of the Christian life: going to church, showing up to small group, writing the check, without actually being trained in the fruit of the Spirit. Tricks are performance. Training is transformation.

That question extends straight into marriage. Richard shared: “What if marriage was designed to make us holy instead of happy?” Not that happiness is the enemy. But if holiness is the goal, then every hard season, every moment your spouse challenges your patience or your gentleness, becomes an invitation to grow rather than a problem to escape.

Richard gave a practical place to begin. He learned it from Dallas Willard: read one Psalm a day, Psalm 145 through 150, on repeat for a month, and watch what happens to your joy. Not circumstantial joy. The kind that holds up “even in the worst circumstances in Scripture.”

If you’re wondering who’s holding the shovel in your family right now, this episode is for you. Listen to the full conversation with Richard and Kelly Kannwischer, and grab a copy of Cultivate to keep training in the fruit of the Spirit long after the episode ends.

Please help us to remain unveiled before You, humble and transparent in the way we share our hearts with You. Thank You also for the way transparency in marriage can be a catalyst for incredible intimacy. Thank You for the courage to open up to one another, the courage to admit when we are struggling with self-doubt, or the boldness to say we feel weak in our faith. May we never hold back from sharing our hearts with one another.

In Jesus’ name, AMEN!

Dear Lord,

Thank You for the way You gently, yet firmly lead us through Scripture to understand the truth about what love is. Thank You for the way Your Word defines love, making it clear exactly how we should love one another. We don’t always catch on right away or quickly implementing the truth in our lives—we are creatures of habit—but we are eager to grow, knowing it takes time and conditioning. Let Your truth captivate us and change us. Lord, will You chisel away our selfish ways and enable us to love well? Please help us to be patient with and kind to each other.

In Jesus’ name, AMEN!

We have been walking through Marriage After God together on the podcast — 29 weeks of it — and this episode focused on what it actually means to be unveiled. Not just forgiven. Unveiled. Known. No longer hiding.

Because here’s the truth — you can’t walk in victory if you’re still hiding. And a lot of us are. We carry shame, we manage what our spouse sees, we wait for a “better time” to say the hard thing out loud, whether that’s to God or to each other.

Paul writes in Ephesians 2 that Christ “made peace” and broke down “the dividing wall of hostility.” That’s not just a theological idea — it’s the same pattern that happens in a marriage. We long for peace, and we only find it in Christ. The chaos we carry when we’re hiding sin, insecurity, or fear doesn’t stay contained. It leaks into everything, including how we show up for the person we married.

Romans 8 says there is “no condemnation” for those in Christ — and that’s not because we’ve earned it. It’s because Christ fulfilled what we couldn’t. When God looks at us, He sees the righteousness of His Son, not our failures. That’s the foundation this whole episode stands on. You are not a conqueror because you never fall. Proverbs 24:16 says the righteous falls seven times and rises again. The victory isn’t the absence of falling — it’s who picks you back up.

We talked about what unveiling has actually looked like for us after twenty years of marriage — confession, shared insecurities, the vulnerability of needing your spouse and telling them so. And every time, encouragement follows. That’s what happens when someone shares their heart and you meet it with grace instead of judgment.

This week’s call to action is simple but not easy: memorize 2 Corinthians 3:16-18 and Romans 6:6. Ask God to help you take one real step toward being unveiled — with Him, and with your spouse.

Your marriage will never be perfect. But it can be unveiled. And that’s where freedom is.

Dear Lord,

We don’t want to be idle in our marriage, relying on the other person to always initiate or do things we don’t feel like doing. We want to be a couple who respects each other and acknowledges the demanding work that has to be done to maintain our relationship and our home. We ask You to instill in both of us a desire and resilience to be diligent servants in our marriage, in our jobs, and in our home.

In Jesus’ name, AMEN!

Leann and her husband Mike have been married almost 38 years. But somewhere around year fifteen, their marriage nearly ended. There was infidelity. And most of the counsel she received — even from Christian counselors — pointed toward walking away.

She stayed. They both did. And what carried them through is something the church often doesn’t talk about clearly enough: forgiveness doesn’t wait for the other person to change first.

Forgiveness Comes First — That’s the Point

Leann shared that she was sitting in the corner of a closet, sobbing, asking God how her husband could do what he did. And then she heard something she wasn’t expecting. A quiet reference to Judas — “Would you betray me with a kiss?” — and the immediate sense that Jesus wasn’t just identifying with her pain. He was telling her He’d been there too.

That moment reframed everything. If Jesus forgave the whole world for all sin before any of us ever repented, who was she to withhold that same forgiveness from her husband?

The word forgiveness, she pointed out, carries that syllable for — as in before. Forgiveness happens first. It’s not earned. It’s extended.

This is where a lot of people get tripped up. They hear “forgive” and think “reconcile.” But those are two different things. Forgiveness takes one person. Reconciliation takes two. And the hard truth is, when we withhold forgiveness, we’re essentially claiming a right that Jesus never claimed for Himself. The sin done against us was already forgiven on the cross. Holding onto it puts us above Christ.

In Matthew 18 the parable of the servant forgiven an unpayable debt who then went out and went after a man who owed him a few coins. Leann put it simply: “How could I turn around and be that servant?”

The Letters That Became Two Books

Years later, when Leann’s oldest son came home and told her he’d found the woman he wanted to marry, she almost had a panic attack. Not out of sadness — out of conviction. Have we prepared him for this?

She started writing him letters. Twenty-one of them. Bound them at Staples, put them in a leather journal, and told him to read one a day in the month before his wedding.

Those letters — and a companion set written for his future sister-in-law when his younger brother got engaged — eventually became Becoming a Husband and Becoming a Wife, published through Focus on the Family. They cover everything from keeping Jesus at the center, to cutting the apron strings with parents, to how to fight for your spouse instead of against them.

What makes these books different is that Leann’s own story is in them. Not as a cautionary tale, but as proof. Before publishing them, the editor asked her to put the hard part in — the season she’d never even told her own sons about. She did. And before the book came out, she and Mike sat down and told their sons the whole story.

This interview was a powerful reminder that no matter how dark or deep the place you’re in, you have a God who is for you..

If you’re preparing for marriage, walking through a hard season in your marriage, or raising kids you want to set up well — Becoming a Husband and Becoming a Wife are a great resource.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” — Romans 8:28
