Happy New Year friends! Thanks for stopping by here. Right now I am visiting family in India, resting, eating, soaking in family togetherness, contemplating various things, wishing that distances weren't so large, flights so expensive, and time so short. I hope I will have some photos to share when I get back, depending on how much I get out. 2011 was bookended by two intense semesters, sprinkled generously with good food, short trips, that one unforgettable trip to Tulum, plenty of instagrams. I am hoping for 2012 to be the year of realizing goals, personal and work related, that I have been chipping away at for some time – partly dreaming, partly doing. I hope the new year brings just the right bit of conviction and boldness I need to push through. And it's time to weed out all that negative stuff that pops up time and again and focus on what matters.

Right now I am really liking that quote in the post title which I saw on this print at Urban. And I love the wise words mentioned in this post by Sarah and the stunning photos accompanying it. Did you see this Murmuration video that was going around recently? It inspired me to make this for a final project. Speaking of final projects, I am done...almost...mostly...just tying a few loose ends here and there. The last few weeks of finals have been intense but also inspiring, sprinkled with little and big successes. I hope your holidays are marked with much drinking of apple cider, many shiny sparkly things, good wine, delicious indulgences...all of it.

Remember the Harvest salad I talked about earlier. This is it...the most deliciously fresh ingredients ever. The carrot cake at homespun is the perfect takeaway for the ride home. Both times I have been there was on nice days so we could find a sunny spot on the backyard patio. We also went to Dia Beacon this time but couldn't sneak in any photos inside. The gardens at Dia are so calming and not very many people there. Guess I am really warming up to Beacon for any time we need to get out for a few hours for fresh air and rid ourselves of the perpetual, drowning noise of the city.

Recently.

I went to this show and it made me want to read Shakespeare and Beckett. We drove to Beacon and ate the freshest most delicious meal at Homespun but decided against going to Dia Beacon because it happened to be such a beautiful day to be outside. The meal consisted of a Harvest salad with cranberries, beets, apples and squash, cauliflower soup and mac-n-cheese. We made it to Shopsin's again after a long time where we ate country scrambles and chocolate chip s'mores pancakes. Later in the day we watched Almodovar's new film where every scene was beautifully impeccable and sometimes quietly disturbing.

At school, I've been coding patterns with sound, going around in circles with my Thesis, wondering where the days go and always running to catch up with work. I have also been listening to Little Dragon's Ritual Union and Future Islands' On the Water and reading Pollan's Botany of Desire. I've indulged in good chocolate this week and a beautiful dress that I found on deep sale at the store.

Photos above are from a trip to Storm King a little while ago when the leaves had just barely started showing a little color. Then there was sudden snowfall on Saturday. I missed actually being outside for it on account of being sick all weekend. I have been very overwhelmed lately and I need to find ways to get out, seek inspiration, de-stress, look at new work etc. etc. I am looking forward to watching the new Almodovar movie. And I just saw this re-release of Food Rules with the dream combo of Michael Pollan and Maira Kalman (via Kate). Want!

Any suggestions for cool stuff happening around the city that I should check out?

Before it's Fall full on I must share some summer photos from Maine...here's one for now. Last week was a sad one ...it made me hopeless to think of on whom are we going to pin our hopes for innovation, vision, guts, creativity, design. I don't know how to articulate it but I felt a void the next morning when I woke up. The Onion summed it up the best.

Posting the last of the Tulum photos makes me feel like it was a distant dream. Real life is so different. Along with school stuff, I have also been trying to deal with this longing to go home. I hope I can make it back soon because this December it will be two years since I saw my family...I miss everything.

I recently watched the Bill Cunningham documentary and found it so inspiring for so many reasons, including the part that he still shoots film (!). The bit that struck me the most is how happy and content he is simply because he wants so little.

I am honestly a little disappointed in the way this roll turned out...should've stuck to the film I know. But it doesn't change how beautiful Tulum is and how amazing this little trip was. It's been a while, I know. Most of August was spent teaching Code to the incoming students in my program in a intense 3 week long Bootcamp. I barely slept during those 3 weeks but it was an amazing experience for many reasons. The day after the teaching ended, we flew out to Tulum, Mexico for a short 3 day trip. I cannot explain in words how beautiful Tulum was for me. I really wish we were there for longer than 3 days and I hope to go back soon. And then so much has happened this week since school started.

The blue waters in Tulum, rainy night with live flamenco music on the beach, bike rides along the water, fresh food, nice people, white sand, orange and blue hammocks outside our cottage with the beach right there, the thatched roof where we stayed and the mosquito net above our bed, delicious frappes at the roadside shack, hot pink bougainvillea, mango margaritas, shrimp tacos, swimming in the cenotes, sleeping to the sound of waves...it all seems so surreal right now. My head is in the clouds this week as I try to figure out thesis, classes, while planning for the long weekend.

I am loving everything in Madewell's Fall lookbook...so looking forward to Fall dressing. I have been busy preparing for a 3 week long position that starts on Monday that will pose many challenges yet offer (I am hoping) moments of gratification. It will be something new for me, for sure. The photos above are from a day at the Cloisters, from a while ago.

(A few weeks back during a stroll through Prospect Park we spotted this swan and its babies conveniently posing in this beautiful pond.)

We spent the weekend in Portland, Maine and drove up to Acadia National Park. I spotted millions of hot pink wild roses everywhere and I stopped to smell them constantly...intoxicating. I held on to several at all times. The water, rocks, beaches, fog, forests, lighthouses, rain and wildflowers are all so beautiful in Maine. I hope to go back again. I will share more soon.

why yes of course! Roses are so hot! Here's the second set of those roses I mentioned in a previous post. I like zooming into film photos to see all that grain...makes me happy...so I shared one here.

It's been few months more than a year now since we moved from LA to NY. That makes me think of many things, for instance one whole cycle of seasons that I never experienced before. As much as I am dreading the 90+ temperatures, insane humidity and sweaty city in July, it has been good to be part of season changes and experience how much our lifestyle, moods, work modes changes with the state of the leaves on the trees. I have also been thinking of last summer at Saipua and the peonies and dahlias that invaded my life and all that beauty I partook in.

The flowers and those months spent with them also shows up a lot when I think of my work as a whole. I have dabbled in some range of design tangents over the years and as I plan to spend a year on thesis I worry about my focus and where I want to be after school and how that has to dictate thesis. Ah well...I hope the weekend away from the city, home and school will be just the breath of fresh air I need.

ps. I've also been updating the portfolio and adding new work including this glacier visualization that I intend to add more data to.

I was going to post this set of Swan photos and then I felt much more like this...don't you? This past weekend we checked out the High Line extension and it was beautiful...wildflower shrubbery in pinks and purples and golden yellows...stunning summer display! I will be spending a great deal of July working at an internship so close to the High Line and I am hoping to climb up for a stroll or a breather in the evening when I get done. Maybe it will be mellower on weeknights than it was on Saturday.

Other highlights from the weekend include finding a great pair of shorts (just in time!), finally checking out Ground Support which serves Intelligentsia coffee and has a nice space with lots of light and a pretty tree to sit under. We also witnessed the Pride Parade and it felt so good to be in NYC during this historic moment. After the parade, it was time for some spicy Indian snacks at the Thelewala.

Also, I registered for a weaving class at the Textile Arts Center and I am so looking forward to it.

Hope your summer is full of Saturdays spent chilling in the grass, drinking iced coffee, dipping toes in cool water...

We made a short stop in Cape Cod on a rainy, foggy Sunday. We were only there for a few short hours but I can't wait to go back.

Since the semester ended mid May we've been busy hanging out with family, exploring the city, making short trips to here and there. And now I go back to doing more school stuff, freelance work, internship, figuring out a lot of code related things and just about doing all it takes to prepare myself for the second year of grad school. The plan sure includes a weekend retreat and hopefully lots of photo taking.

I've been meaning to post these for two weeks and something or the other keeps coming up. I have a bit of a backlog where I have some photos to post from the last roll and another one that's been waiting to be developed and I have had no time to make it to that side of town to drop it off. Anyways, I was spotting roses all over town a couple of weeks ago. Then I saw this post by the amazing Brian Ferry and I couldn't even think much of my roses photos since the way he captured them is absolutely divine. Sigh.

What do I tell you about snow that you haven't already heard/seen before? Except that I think I was really missing sunshine which came to us in all its glory yesterday. It almost felt like Fall or technically Spring I suppose. I've been updating my portfolio with some recent work, keeping extremely busy since the very first day of school, trying to catch up with freelance work, feeding stress with food, drinking lots of Earl Grey, and munching on Momofuku truffle cakes (recent obsession!).
