"Dil Dil Pakistan" Mary McBride's performance at UOG

Famous American Rock band Mary McBride along with her band visited University of Gujrat on October 27, 2011 for a jamming session with Odium Art Society students.

This session was organized by Kathryn Kiser (Cultural Affair Officer, US State Department, Lahore), Tahira Habib and Arshia Bano (US Consulate, Lahore) to promote cultural awareness between Pakistan and USA. The Jam session was attended by the students of different departments of UOG. Students had rehearsed some of the songs and were thrilled to sing along with the renowned group.

Mary McBride on vocals enthralled the audience with her powerful voice in her complete control, supplemented by Gregg Beshers’ acoustic rhythms and Paul Carbonara on electric leads. Drummer Bobby Lloyd Hicks, who is also a Grammy winner and bassist Dan Carr gave an equally inspiring performance.

The band expressed their happiness in coming to Pakistan and said that they were given a lot of hospitality and a warm welcome. The concert is one of hundreds of World Music Days concerts held around the world to bring people from different cultures together through music.

This is worth mentioning that 17th October, 2011 is the birthday of great legendary reformer and educationist Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Contributions of this man are of historic nature and have tremendous effects on Muslim’s mindset. He is no doubt pioneer of ideological struggle for the Muslims of India which culminated in creation of a homeland for them, where they were living in majority. He was the first ever scholar who challenged the outdated orthodoxy in Muslim mindset.

Valiantly struggling against financial crunch

University of Gujrat is the only university in the Punjab that has been solely built with the resources of the Govt. of the Punjab. The university administration vows to leave no stone unturned in building it up to immaculate standards. Its motto is to be a world class university in academics and research. To come up to the challenges posed by the financial crunch it is poising itself in equitable strategies to steer clear of the troubled waters. Its shift in policies is based on justice, equity and fair play. Not a single employee has been dismissed or fired from service. But contracts of 31 employees have not been renewed. It is to relieve the burden and absolve the administration of the issues and problems pitched by temporary employment that happens to be the cause of action. Furthermore it is to save the student community by not straining their resources through exorbitant rise in fees but rationalizing the administrative strength and thus concurrently encouraging merit and discouraging nepotism, jobbery, favoritism and corruption which can seep in to contract employment. Selection through merit via selection boards is universally acknowledged and acclaimed all over the world.

There are no malafides involved. Concurrently 100 seats of employees have been advertised in the newspapers. These thirty one contract employees shall enter into bonafide service conditions once they qualify themselves and get selected. The employment through Selection Boards is the most viable procedure in the present scenario. Secondly all the professors are also being transformed from contract employees to visiting professors. This is also a bonafide and equitable solution under the present financial straits. This would also shed a large chunk of financial burden.

The cut in grants in aid by the HEC and the Punjab Government have necessitated exercising these indispensable options. However these measures shall shelter the student community and the quality education, which are the pivotal interests of all our endeavors. These shifts in paradigms were announced by the Vice Chancellor University of Gujrat Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin in his press conference. Answering different questions of the journalists he unambiguously stated that the UOG was the centre of his desires and he was ready to move heaven and earth to secure its vital interests. He was bent upon introducing innovative and market oriented programs in the university. Hotel and Restaurant Management in only being run in this university throughout Punjab. He thanked the Media for giving an intelligent understanding to the perspective that has motivated for policy changes, solely to meet up the challenges of present financial crises.

UOG Colleges progressing by leaps and bounds

A report published by Mr Mansoor Malik under the heading “Dialogue on Future of Four UOG Colleges” in the daily DAWN July 2, 2011, need a careful and salutary deciphering; to acknowledge the unprecedented achievements affected under the charismatic leadership of Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin Vice Chancellor University of Gujrat and the abundant benefits harvested by these four institutions: Fatima Jinnah College for Women, Marghzar College for Women, Railway Road College for Women and G.T.College for Boys in their symbiosis with the varsity management.

The following facts have been conceded, in consequence of the various dialogues, deliberations, and discussions going on in different committees by all the stake holders i.e Principals of the four colleges, Secretary Punjab Higher Education Department, Mr Haseeb Athar, Vice Chancellor UOG Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin and the Punjab Education Minister, Mr. Shuja ur Rehman.

Mr Haseeb Akhtar Secretary Punjab Higher Education Department is very forthright and unambiguous in his expression of the harm that might ensue on to the students and that the said colleges are prone to setback in quality education; if any reversal is effected. The accession of these four constituent colleges with the UOG; on its inception in the University of Gujrat Act 2004, has been a boon for the students, faculty and the populace of Gujrat at large. UOG has appreciably uplifted the academic standard of these colleges by introducing quality education and research. It has replenished these colleges with ultramodern facilities, new technologies, innovative methodologies; honed the pedagogical skills of the teachers and learning abilities of the students. The infrastructure of these colleges has been overhauled, renovated, modernized and considerably improved in all aspects and dimensions. Nine latest IT Labs have been established in varsity’s four constituent colleges. It has introduced Four Year Honours Degree Programmes in 43 professional disciplines under the semester system; which happens to be the best system of educations; known and practised all over the world. To cater to any unfortunate situation, emergency or any untoward happening to any student; it has introduced 2 year Associated Graduation Degree, as a bonafide exit with partial achievement, securing the career of the incumbent. The impression that 2 year BA/BSc Programme has been done away with by the UOG is absolutely wrong. The UOG keeping its eagle eyes on future horizons and prospects of education has concentrated and sidelined this programme in two of its constituent colleges i.e College for Boys G.T.Road and Fatima Jinnah College for Women. It is because of the latest techniques and strategies devised and applied under the bold and inspiring leadership of Prof Dr Nizamuddin that these colleges are flourishing, thriving and growing by leaps and bounds. Excepting Fatima Jinnah College for Women where there has occurred minor periodical decrease of 125 students, the students strength in all other colleges has appreciably increased. UOG College for Boys G.T.Road has witnessed an increase from 1853 in 2004 to 2509 this year; at Marghzar College the number of students increased from 1750 to 1900; while at Railway Road College for Women the figure has increased from 826 to 1120. This increase, development and growth goes unabated in all aspects and facets of the academia. Besides the co-curricular activities and games; which are the best medium for polishing student’s abilities and burgeoning up their talents; have witnessed a meteoric rise in these institutions. Almost all the principals excepting one have expressed their determination to continue their academic journey, hand in hand with the UOG; which is a constant source of their inspiration, strength, growth and development. They are happy with the UOG policy of filling all vacancies promptly and efficiently with its own resources. This immediate and continued availability of teaching staff helps them in keeping up the standard and quality of education.

The introduction of Evening programs in these colleges has further facilitated the populace and added to the prestige and utility of these institutions. Students and the faculty which keep close liaison with main campus enjoy its pristine academic ambience of motivated research and share the excellent culture of innovative learning and teaching. In interactive activities students acknowledge to have been inspired and have honed their learning skills; where better prospects and avenues lie open to them. Many of the teachers of these Institutions have already joined M.Phil classes at the university to improve their professional competence and pedagogical skills. That may be the reason why 56 out of total of 109 have abstained to reply and kept their quiet, because in the end they feel themselves to be the beneficiaries of their inclusion in the university; along with 7 others who have shown their willingness to join UOG on permanent basis. A staff of 109 with breakup of 66 teachers and 43 supporting staff; majority of whom is already on the right side of the positive option, is no doubt subject to a diarchy of university administration and the Punjab Education Department but they practically are harvesting dividends from both sides. Their lien with the Punjab Govt. is absolutely safe. Their financial benefits of G.P fund and pension are secure. Moreover there is no bar to their vacation from the varsity. They are at liberty to go any time they opt to their parent department.

The suggestion of the committee to the Chief Minister to open a new female college under the aegis of Punjab Education Department is very appropriate. 38 teachers who have opted to vacate can be amicably adjusted with a win win situation for all. The proposal of the committee to declare Gujrat a big city and dispense 45% house rent is equally salutary and welcome. These two steps will troubleshoot all problems and provide an excellent opportunity for the dissidents to adjust themselves to their entire satisfaction.

A Dual Radio Wireless Mesh Network for Application in Disaster Management and Healthcare

A Research Project at Centre for Emerging and Applied Technologies (CREAT) at University of Gujrat

Introduction:

University of Gujrat provides both focus and infrastructure at Centre for Research in Emerging and Applied Technologies (CREAT) at Faculty of CS&IT, within which applied research and development projects in the area of Wireless Networks, Knowledge Management Systems, Software Engineering and Robotics are undertaken. While the CREAT also undertakes “theoretical” research, in terms of the development of new models and approaches to the design and implementation of computer based information systems, “applied” research forms the basis of our work. Applied research seeks to develop solutions that are practically applicable to problems faced by a particular society or community.

We possess a dual radio Wireless Mesh Network technology at Center for Research in Emerging and Applied Technologies (CREAT), 8 Network Devices each costs approximately Rs. 40,000 along with other multimedia equipments are funded by SwanMesh Research Group UK which is working in collaboration with Swansea University, UK.

Figure-2 shows the image of the developed router which has been deployed in an outdoor environment to evaluate the performance of the network. A router node was also deployed on top of a tall building as indicated in the Figure-1. A car client was used to test the Video over wireless, Voice over IP and Broadband service. Figure-3 shows the wireless phones that are used for the testing of Voice over IP services and Figure-4 shows the complete equipment.

Currently BS Final year students at Faculty of CS&IT have undertaken several publishable projects to further enhance the functionality and routing of the wireless networks.

Features of the developed wireless mesh network:

Following are the features of developed wireless mesh network
Efficient Linux Operating System: The operating system Swan Linux is a customized Debain distribution, specific for the developed Swan Mesh. It is small and efficient and supports the latest Linux Kernel.
Two-radio wireless mesh network: One radio (802.11a) is used to form the backbone of the network and another radio (802.11g/b) is used to serve the clients.
Support voice over wireless networks (VoIP).
Support for Multimedia communication
Multiple layers security.
AAA network access control.
WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access ) certification
AES (Advanced Encryption Systems) encrypted VPN for node-to-node connections (256-bit AES)
SSL security
Web-based management system

Advantages of the network
Following are the advantages of the network which makes it very suitable technology for application in emergency and disaster recovery and healthcare:

Self-organisation, self-management and self-healing nature is the main characteristic of a wireless mesh network, where each node works out the routing to automatically form the network. When any node in the network fails, other nodes will remove the routes to it and establish new routes through a different node, to automatically manage the network.
Network topology changes dynamically Because of the self-organisation of a mesh network, the mesh topology changes dynamically when nodes are added, removed, replaced or relocated. Thus the rescue teams do not require any IT training to establish the network.
It provides variation in scale Just add more nodes. The routing configuration is automatic, and there is no exponential rise in complexity as the network grows.
Gateway nodes provide internet connection in the network. There is decreased need for Internet gateways as one gateway can share the internet connection with multiple nodes.
Service coverage in geographically large areas which makes it very suitable technology to provide rescue during natural disasters such as flood and earthquake.
It doesn’t require extensive cabling to be laid; therefore a network could be established in minutes on a disaster site.
Lower cost of infrastructure.
Lower cost of operations.
Each node is connected to several other nodes and if one drops out of the network, its neighbors simply find another route.
The ability to configure the network and routes dynamically

Envisioned application of the project in the area of Disaster Management:

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and cyclones can affect large geographical areas resulting in significant impact on the network infrastructures, water, electricity, transport and communications. A quick response to provide the disaster rescue operation in affected areas is very critical to saving many lives. One of the major aftermaths of these disaster situations is the destruction of the traditional infrastructure for communication. Unfortunately, rescue operations after such events are hampered by the lack of functioning communication infrastructures. The loss of communication systems makes rescue and relief operations extremely difficult which results in heavy loss of lives. Therefore establishing a temporary alternative communication network to support emergency communications is one of the most urgent tasks in a disaster rescue mission.

The nature of developed wireless mesh networks makes them suitable to deploy as an alternative communication network to facilitate an emergency and disaster recovery operation. The characteristics and advantages described in previous sections makes our dual radio Wireless Mesh Network a useful and feasible solution for communication services in extreme emergency situations where the fast and effective deployment of a communication network infrastructure is impossible.

Rescue teams in each stricken area consist of a few trained professional squads: police, army, fire fighters, medical professionals and potentially many hundreds or thousands of disorganized volunteers. During large scale disasters these rescue teams have to work simultaneously at different disaster affected geographical locations as shown in the example scenario figure 5. Therefore an emergency response usually requires a central control to coordinate the rescue efforts being carried by different teams at different locations. WMN provides that central control through gateway nodes which connect to the backbone external network, thus building a bridge between the WMN and external networks in order to share and exchange the critical information via www, email and ftp. It enables the command centers to rely on a fully operational multimedia enabled wireless mesh network and helps to learn about on-going situations to allocate and guide the rescue teams.

The multimedia capabilities of developed dual radio Wireless Mesh Network can enable these rescue teams to coordinate from a distance for situational awareness, sharing information with each other for planning and decision making. In order to co-ordinate emergency response to a large scale natural disaster an incident commander at each site is usually required to control the onsite command centre. The incident commander is responsible for co-ordinate among several teams and for allocating each team with the required resources based on their needs. The multimedia capability of WMN feed the command centre and rescue teams with a more accurate view of the situation, contributing to the efficient allocation of the resources. The mobile devices such as laptops, PDAs, wireless cameras and VoIP phones are used during the rescue operations which connect to wireless mesh nodes as clients to share the information. Moreover, today’s portable mobile devices have reached a system performance level which make them possible to host more sophisticated software applications.

Envisioned application of the project in the area of Healthcare

An ideal application of WMN in healthcare sector that we plan to develop in our centre for Research in Emerging and Applied Technologies (CREAT) in collaboration with NAWAZ SHARIF Medical College at University of Gujrat. Currently 8 Million project proposal to HEC is under review to fund the project.

The proposed system is an intelligent, self-organized, self-managed, and reliable network which connects patients, physicians, medical administration and technical staff.

WMN technology can be used to connect Patients, Physicians, Hospital Administration and Technical Staff from different locations which enables the doctors to remotely provide medical care to patients suffering from chronic diseases which requires continues monitoring.

For example a patient located in the remote suburban area suffering from a chronic disease can be equipped with a mobile hand held device which can seamlessly connect to the medical sensor. The handheld device can broadcast sensor readings to the server using the internet which is available on most of the devices these days. Thus the live medical sensor readings can be recorded at the server which keeps the medical administration well informed on the changing medical condition of the patients, without the patient being hospitalized. With the proposed wireless networked healthcare system, the medical staff can be automatically alarmed when an attention is needed by the patients with the help of wireless medical sensors. This not only helps a doctor to observe a patient’s condition to avoid unnecessary laboratory tests and harmful medication, but also alarm the medical staff to be prepared forehand to deal with the emergencies. Furthermore, the patients can be cured intensive care can be provided at their homes through the proposed system.

Quiz Competition on the UN

The Hayatians Quiz Society (HQS) at Hafiz Hayat Campus the University of Gujrat has organized a quiz competition on introduction of the United Nations, its charter, history and the composition. Alongside the departments at the main and its constitute campuses, the teams from G.C Lahore University, Ibn-e-Imam Science Degree College, Sialkot and the Vocational Training Institute, Gujrat have participated in the competitions. Contests were based on General Round, Category Round, the Audio Visual Round and Rapid Fire Round. The jury prepared rules and regulations and performed on the occasion. Among the panel were Director Students Services Center Ms Aneesa Rahat, Shahid Iqbal from Electrical Engineering, Misbah Arshad from Psychology Department and Ms Musarat Alvi of the English Department. According to the results, the competition was topped by a team comprising Hajira Khalid (HSM) and Asma Rani from Psychology Department.

First prize was valued for Rs. 5000. Team comprising Faiza Ahsan and Hafza Hameed remained second achieving Rs. 3000 while 3rd position was clinched by the students of BBA, Mehreen Azan and Farhana Aftab with the prize amounting Rs. 2000.

Patron of the HQS, Principal Nawaz Sharif Medical College, Prof Dr Nasir Aziz Kamboh was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony while Ms Ishrat Rizvi from the United Nations Information Center attended the ceremony as the guest of honor.

3-Days Conference on " Promotion of Social Science Research in Pakistani Universities: Prospects and Challenges"

The first 3-days international conference on “Promotion of Social Science Research in Pakistani Universities: Prospects and Challenges” was held at the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad on April 18th.
Chief guest Dr. Javaid R. Laghari, Chairman HEC inaugurated the opening ceremony of the conference. The conference was organized by the "Committee for Development of Social Sciences and Humanities in Pakistan, HEC". The Vice Chancellor University of Gujrat Prof Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin was the Chairman of the organizing committee.

The anchors of the conference include experts in the field of social sciences from both, home and abroad. Experts in social science research from the USA, India, Germany and Bangladesh contributed on the different dimensions of the social science research. The participants who attended the conference include young faculty of social science and indigenous PhD scholars who will be making poster presentations based on their research.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Laghari said that the Committee for Development of Social Sciences and Humanities in Pakistan is an advisory committee established in 2003, having eminent social scientists from various higher education institutions throughout the country as its members. He appreciated the work done by the committee under its first chairperson. Dr. Najma Najam (2003-2006) and then Dr. Ishrat Husain (2006-2009). “The primary objective of the committee is to develop the existing level of faculty, improve R & D in social sciences and humanities, develop infrastructure as well as a quality assurance mechanism, keeping in view the international trends”, Dr Laghari remarked.

He said that we want our social scientists to play a leading role in building the communities, be it education, health, environment, population, disaster or any other community need. He said that every possible effort is being made to enhance the social science research in Pakistani universities, in a way that it has a direct impact on the policy making of the country.

Earlier, presenting an overview of the conference, Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin, said that the main objective of conference include developing and promoting an interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary/trans-disciplinary approach to study the Pakistani society; forging a common research agenda to meet the contemporary social, economic, political, cultural and environmental challenges; examining latest methodological tools, conceptual paradigms and techniques to address the challenging research issues; building the capacity of young faculty members and MPhil/PhD students to conduct qualitative and quantitative social science research and establishing an inter-university consortium for expanding the role of social science research in Pakistan’s public policymaking.

In his keynote address entitled “The Crisis in Social Science Research in South Asia: Coping with Market Failure and Structural Constraints”, Prof Rehman Sobhan, Chairman, Center for Policy Dialogue, Bangladesh said that effective demand for academic research in the social sciences in South Asian region remains both weak and in particular cases, undiscovered. “The failure in articulating a need for quality research is compounded by structural constraints which distant the market for such research and generates disincentives for researchers.”

Prof Sobhan said the extent of influence exercised by our external partners depended to some extent in the professional competence as well as political influence of our respective bureaucracies. Referring to the marginalization of research outcome generated by the academic community and research institution, he said, “Even in the glory days of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) in the 1960s, when it was populated by expatriate economists of some distinction as well as eminent indigenous economists and the Pakistan Development Review was a globally recognized peer reviewed journal, their research output exercised only a peripheral influence on the design of development policy which was heavily influenced by the World Bank and Harvard Advisory Group.

He said that the climate for social science research has been evolving with the changing times. “Today the international development community is much more open to heterodox thinking than they used to be. The global discourses on development policy has not remained immune to the growing crisis within the globalization process,” he said adding the policy agendas which once dominated policy thinking in South Asia have, in most countries, failed to deliver sustained growth or significant alleviation of poverty whilst social disparities have widened. New agendas, prioritizing poverty reduction, human development and good governance through policy ownership, have now been introduced into the policy domain though such exotic acronyms such as the PRSP and the MGDs, and once marginalized domestic researchers are being rediscovered.

He stressed the importance of quality research which provides both creative as well as credible policy options to bring about substantive chance in the lives of people. “To this end, there is a need to channel adequate budgetary resources to the research community without political strings attached to it. If quality research, which can inspire agendas for inclusive change, can be put on the table, with the full backing of democratically elected governments, the international community will be persuaded to respect and recognize these influences as legitimate sources of policy change,” he added.

Address of the keynote speaker was followed by the Chief Guest’s address. Later, Chairperson, Committee for Development of Social Sciences and Humanities in Pakistan, HEC and Director Institute of Management Sciences, Peshawar, Dr Nasir Ali Khan thanked the speakers and the audience for attending the first session. After the tea break, second session started with the panel discussion on “Role of Social Science Research in Public Policy Development” under the chair Dr Ishrat Hussain (Director, Institute of Business Administration, Karachi). In this session Dr Jochen Hippler (Institute of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Duisburg-Essen, Duisburg, Germany) addressed as the keynote speaker. Third session was held the same day on “Challenges for Promotion of Social Science Research in Pakistani Universities and HEC’s Experience under the chair Dr Sohail H. Naqvi (Executive Director, Higher Education Commission, Islamabad). Second day proceedings started with the discussion on “New Developments in Social Science Research Techniques and Methodologies” with Lt. Gen. (Retd) Muhammad Asghar (Rector National University of Science and Technology, Islamabad) in chair. Dr James C.Wittee (Director, Center for Social Science Research, George Mason University, USA) was the keynote speaker of the session.

Working group meetings on “Identifying Social Sciences Research Priorities for Pakistan” was another salient feature of the program. The participants were given a choice to join one of the following four parallel working groups, during which both quantitative and qualitative aspects of social science research with a focus on Pakistan was discussed. Besides the chair/moderator and six lead speakers, each group comprised about 20-25 experts who identified research priorities, including institutional and financial mechanisms for its implementations, for the next five years in its respective area.

First working group was held on “Sustainable Human Development, Poverty and Inequality” with the moderator Dr Hafiz A Pasha (Dean, School of Social Sciences, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore). Second working group met to discuss “Costs and Opportunities of Pakistan’s Rapidly Changing Age Structure: Demographic Dividend, Aging and Urbanization” with moderator Dr Zeba A. Sathar (Country Director, Population Council, Islamabad). Third Working group was convened on “The State in Pakistan: Internal and External Challenges” with its moderator Dr Rasul Bakhsh Rais (Professor of Political Science, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Humanities, Social Science and Law, Lahore University of Management Sciences, Lahore). “Ensuring Human Rights and Cultural Diversity: The Role of Media and Civil Society” was discussed in fourth working group with its moderator Mr Zafarullah Khan (Executive Director, Center of Civic Education, Islamabad). Debate on “Problems of Conducting Dissertation Research in Pakistan” was extensively discussed in working group chaired by Dr Rubina Saigol (Independent Researcher on Social Development, Lahore). Day 3 started with the session sharing recommendations of working groups with Dr Sohail H Naqvi in chair.

Dr Pasha in his recommendations stressed research in liberal arts/ social sciences. He recommended for the special studies locating the reasons behind raising poverty and inequality in Pakistan. He urged pro poor policy tackling the poverty and inequality. He recommended the objective research on youth who constitute 28 millions population of the country. He said that by 2030, Pakistan will become the largest Muslim country in the world. He further stressed to end differential in land ownership.

Dr Mehtab S Karim representing the group recommendations of Dr Zeba A. Sathar stresses the issue of youth. He viewed the problems of the youth with the diverse demographic dimensions. He recommended checking the demographic momentum. He stressed to conduct research on the issues of psychological challenges of the children. He also suggested streamline the issue of urbanization. He also recommend to formulate polices to end violence and crime among the youth.

Dr Rusal Bukash Raise on behalf of his group deliberated that theorizing of the state remained a contested issue in the country. He stressed the need to settle it at earliest. He suggested the need to give priority to the vision of the founders of the state. He also recommended finding the reasons promoting the authoritarian tendencies in the society. He recommended for settling the imbalance among the state institutions. He also recommend to review polices on feminism, human rights and employment. He opined that the 18^th Amendment has now become a subject of intecchutal debate which must be supported in its spirit. While recommending the policy on Baluchistan problems, he stressed to focus the Balochs only in this regard. Balochs, he recommended to be given top priority in addressing the consolidation issue of the country.

While recommending the measures to streamline the problems on conducting dissertation in Pakistan, Ms Rubina Saigol focused the problems like financing, lack of access to information and insufficient library and computer lab facilities. She recommended promoting exchange of views in seminars, conferences and public debates. Data sharing, learning academic language and writing skills of dissertation, farming the research problems and the HEC funded supervisors were the issues recommended to be taken in account.

A musical evening organized on the inaugural day of the workshop alongside the campus’ Odium Arts Society’s whirling presentation depicting the sufis’ divine truth made the conference a landmark event at the HEC. The anchors and participants were deeply appreciative of the over all arrangements made by the University of Gujrat. Chairman HEC Committee for Development of Social Sciences and Humanities in Pakistan (CDSSHP) Dr Nasser Ali Khan while appreciating the UOG contributions in organizing the conference remarked that the UOG has made the conference a success story of the HEC.

Day Care Center Launched

Due to acute demand of UOG faculty and staff members a well-furnished Day Care Center starts functioning at the House No 11, Lane-2 at the Hafiz Hayat Campus. The Vice Chancellor University of Gujrat Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin inaugurated the civic facility. While speaking on the occasion, the VC remarked that it was direly needed at because of the young teaching faculty at the campus constitute academics. He assured all cooperation to transform it into a modern viable facility for the spouses who spend most of their time at the campus. The centre is the consequence of the child-loving thinking of Mrs Jahan Ara Nizam. She has been known for such humanitarian services. She earlier had supported the UOG administration while accumulating aid funds for the Swat IDPs and last year’s flood victims of KPK, Southern Punjab and Sindh province.

The UGO Day Care and Child Development Centre is furnished with the air-conditioned bed rooms, play rooms, kitchen and toys and various necessary gadgets. The administration of the centre has the plan to commence kindergarten facility soon. Later, Project Director of the Center, Ms Jahan Ara Nizam thanked the UOG administration for supporting the idea of the center at the campus. She appreciated the cooperation of Administration and Coordination Office for executing this project. She specially thanked Ms Neelum Ramay (Manager, UOG Day Care Center) and young faculty members who supported the project.

CONNECT 2011 will catered to a broad range of sectors in the ICT industry and brought business professionals together under a lucrative environment. There were limited stalls those were funded by the HEC. HEC invited proposals from all the universities across the country on the research project and Centre of Research in Emerging and Applied Technologies (CREAT) at Faculty of CS & IT at UoG was selected among the twelve finalists Universities those were selected to showcase their research work at Complementary 3X3 meter stall at the exhibition. NUST, LUMS, NED, COMSATS, Fatima Jina Woman University, University of Baluchistan were among the other finalists. A free two pages advertisement were also published on the research work being done at CREAT in the exhibition catalog which was distributed to the exhibitors and visitors.

Dr. Muddesar Iqbal presented his invention “SwanMesh: A dual radio wireless mesh network router” at the Connect 2011 exhibition. The Router provides a self organized, self healed self managed alternative communication network for disaster management and can be established on the disaster site within minutes. The device was invented in collaboration with Several International University out of SwanMesh University UK is the key player which has also funded the Research testbed established at CREAT , UOG. BS finals years student faculty of CS&IT are currently working on the SwanMesh project which is running in collaboration with Swansea University UK.

During the showcasing events Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari the Minister of Youth Affairs for the Government of Sindh, Pakistan visited the UoG stall and admired the research work. The GM IT/Coordination National ICT R &D fund Mr. Muhemmed Ahmed also visited the stall and a demo of SwanMesh wireless Mesh network for application disaster management was given to him. A detailed discussion was held with Mr. Ahmed who co-ordinated with Manager Project Evaluation ICT R&D fund Mr. Humayun Altaf Khan and requested him to visit the stall who also visited the stall with his team member on the same day. A detailed demo was given to him and further proposal was discussed with estimated funded required to enhance the SwanMesh for application in disaster management. Mr. Khan gave a very positive feedback and showed a keen interest in further funding the project through ICT R & D fund. Contact details were exchanged and Mr. Ahmed invited Dr. Iqbal to apply for the ICT R &D fund to undertake the proposed work discussed during the meeting.

All Pakistan Inter University Challenge 2011 held in Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad from 21st to 23rd April, 2011. This national event covered all means of expression like Theatre Competition, Movie Competition, Photography, Sketching, Visage Canvas and social events encompassing Musical Evening, Mushaira, Speed Programing, and Clash of Clans. Along with Workshops, this event provided us a thought-provoking platform for discerning students to refresh the true essence of their emotions and sensitivity with agility and brain-power.
Odeum Society, UOG participated in 10 competitions such as Theater Competition, Movie Competition, Thematic Photography, Sketching, Visage Canvas, Painting, Speed Programing, Singing and Declamation.
We won First Position in Theater Competition, Movie Competition, Thematic Photography, and Sketching. Second Position in Singing and Easy Writing. Also Third Position in Singing. A successful theater performance by Odeum Art Society, University of Gujrat students received great response and standing ovation from the audience and appreciation from jury on a great idea and choreography of mime directed by Mr. Ghafar Mohiudin.

Mr. Amsal Mumtaz (President) & Mr. Bilal Afzal (Vise President) Odeum Art Society and all the team organized the whole participation of All Pakistan Inter University Challenge 2011.

The theme of all research articles included in this book reflects that Sufism may be practiced with any religion. It may be called the “heart” of religion. No one faith or belief is questioned; each can follow his own church, religion, faith or creed. Sufism is the application of spiritual principles to achieve full spiritual development for oneself. Sufism is an applied science that derives from knowledge of all the details of human energy, faculties of perception, states of consciousness, and levels of reality. Sufism has universal appeal and its characteristics are universally acclaimed. Those curious about the content, history or structure of Sufism and its many sects will need another book that more specifically addresses Sufi beliefs and practices. The term “sufi” probably derives from an Arabic word for wool, referring to the rough garments once worn by Middle Eastern ascetics. Certain followers of Sufism were called “dervish,” a term related to a Persian word for poor. In connection with the peace of the world, the term Sufism is under discussion at high level forums which raise the concept that sufism is the only tool which could retain peace and harmony in the world and only the sufism can help to solve problems and can help us to grow together. They consider that Islam and other religions are basically sister religions and all teach us love and peace. Sufi is found in various religions. This work shows the class of compiler and his worth as these articles are skillfully designed .This conceptual thought becomes an effective blueprint of the mind, moving the reader towards his own vision of truth in a way no ordinary story could do. The compiler’s wisdom penetrates to a depth accessible to intellectual knowledge in a specific way. The readers will definitely acknowledge for its beauty and entertainment value. One of the main goals of this motivated study is to show how a constructive process can be found in this compilation as done by Sheikh Abdul Rasheed. In my point of view, the remarkable success in term of political, economical and social progress may be achieved in having its objectives fulfilled; by the enormous number of self-sacrificing workers it produced for the propagation of its ideals; by the revolutionary passion it aroused, and by the indelible marks it left not only on Muslim society but on the Christian, Hindu and Buddhist and other societies as well. It may be done by having free religious thought from the rigidity imposed by the Ulema( religious guide) and to stress the essence of faith rather than mere observance of formalities to discourage parochial feelings and eliminate racial pride. There is dire need to demolish the construction of false values based on power and restore morality to its proper place in the role of Muslim society.

Finally, I appreciate the efforts made by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nizamuddin, Vice Chancellor, University of Gujrat, who is a very dedicated person having exceptional qualities is the main essence of spreading the truth by his selfless familiarity towards the truth, by means of love and devotion and has the distinction of initiating by motivating Sheikh Abdul Rasheed to produce such an exceptional work for placement to the university credit box which remains unparalleled by his wide-spread character.

Seminar held on “Role of HEC in the Promotion of Higher Education”

Issue of the Higher Education Commission must be dealt with the collective wisdom. Education at every level must be managed by the centre. Curricula and the educational system’s disparity may result negative consequences on the promotion of the education in the country. Centralization of the education is not contrary to the provincial autonomy. Promotion of the nationalistic tendencies in the country is direly needed. All the prejudices must be shun to protect the ideological and geographical boundaries of the country. These views were shared by the former Dean of Social Sciences at the University of the Punjab, Prof Dr Mughees ud Din Sheikh while addressing a seminar on the “Role of Higher Education Commission in the Promotion of Higher Education”, organized by the Media & Publications at Hafiz Hayat Campus, the University of Gujrat. The Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin presided over the seminar. While addressing the seminar, Dr Nizamuddin said the higher education is integral for the national development of the country. He said that the higher education should not suffer while administrative management of the state. He was of the view that higher education in this country must not be sacrificed on any ethnic ground. The quality performance of the HEC in the last decade binds one to continue its policies. The VC said that the HEC has played a role of think tank in Pakistan. He appreciated the HEC’s role while achieving the worth of its degrees overseas. He appreciated the HEC’s administrative performance keeping itself away from the political pressures. Renowned lawyer at Gujrat, Ch Masood Akhtar and Director, Centre for History, International Relations and Political Science (CHIPS) Prof Syed Shabbir Hussain Shah also addressed the seminar. While addressing as the legal expert remarked that the academia should have notice the issue in time. He was of the view that while ensuring the provincial autonomy, changes in the departmental managements doesn’t matter. Mr Masood said that on the issue of Eighteenth Amendment, people at the helm of affairs should be cautious as the denial to the provincial autonomy may have disastrous results. He said that establishment in Pakistan had always been a great hindrance for the provincial autonomy. He remarked on the occasion that the nation had faced the consequences in the form of disintegration of the country. Earlier, while opening the debate, Syed Shabbir Hussain Shah said that the issue of the devolution of the HEC must be reviewed keeping in view the ground realities of the national administrative setup. He said that our provincial establishments are not capable enough to supervise the higher education qualitatively. He argumentatively remarked that the HEC is not in the concurrent list and how it became under its agenda. He opined that the HEC performed keeping itself aloof from the political pressures etc. He quoted on the occasion that the neighboring country India where the regulation of the higher education is the under the central setup. He urged the government to formulate policy on the issue while engaging all the stakeholders.

Review Session on “Sufism ke Awami Bunyadein”

The Readers Club of Mass Communication and Media Centre (MCMC) at the University of Gujrat held a review session on “Sufism ke Awami Bunyadein” compiled recently by its Additional Registrar Media & Publications, Sheikh Abdul Rashid. The compilation was an outcome of the desire of Governor Punjab, Sardar Latif Khan Khosa who attended the UOG-Academy of Letters collaborated Sufi Conference in Lahore on May 2010 as the chief guest. Eighteen papers on different dimensions of the Sufism were presented by the renowned intellectuals of the country. The Readers Club has selected the compilation for its routine review. The students have reviewed five papers of the compilation. They shared the literary and communication dimensions of the book. While initiating the proceeding of the review session, the Coordinator MCMC, Muhammad Zahid Bilal commented on the subject of the book. He said that the Sufism is not contrary to the teachings of Islam. He said that all-time remembrance to God is Sufism. He said that it has usually been conceived a difficult procedure but is just a practicing way of life. Shafiqa Ahsan and Tahmida Kausar reviewed “Sufism: Deen e Awam Ya Deen e Khawas” , Anila Abid, Atiya Dar, Kishwar Ayesha and Rashid Javed presented review on “Tassawaf ke Aafaqi Qadren”; Rubab Fatima and Usman Saeed on “Tassawaf, Shehenshaahiyat Aur Insaani Tauqeer”; and Asma reviewed “Globalization Aur Sufism”. Sheikh Abdul Rashid while explaining his remarks on the compilation said that Sufism has its turn after practicing Socialism and Communism.

He remarked that the Sufism has potential of saving the Ummah from sectarianism in general and Pakistani society in special. Sheikh Abdul Rashid said that while keeping in view the significance of the change among human minds said that the Sufis should adopt a life pattern of a common man and a common man should try to follow the pattern of Sufis in routine life. He advocated on the occasion for the freedom of expression as he said that all the religions stressed the promotion of thoughts and expression. Director, Javed Ahmad Sajjad after explaining the literary dimensions of the compilation said that people mistakenly associate Sufism with the American agenda. He said that none including America has special agenda to promote Sufism. Sufism, he remarked has its historical and spiritual roots in the human civilization. Sufism promoted the human values like brotherhood, equality, tolerance and peace among the mankind. Director, Centre for History International Relations and Political Science, Professor Syed Shabbir Hussain shah termed Sufism a complex phenomenon. He explained the historical background of the Sufism. He shed light on the role of Sufis in different periods of the Muslim history. He was of the view that Sufism could not emerge as an effective movement saving the humanity from anti human steps. Lecturer English Department Rana Ahmad Shaheed also shared his views about the literary dimensions of the compilation. On commenting Sufism he remarked that “Tassawuf” is way of purifying and strengthening one’s personality with consistent efforts of maintaining the values of truthfulness, honesty and dedication. Being teacher he urged a parental role inculcating among students the values of ethics and hard work. HOD of MCMC Ashraf Iqbal said that nothing has its worth on extra Islamic teachings. Nobody can claim to be a sufi without following the teachings of the “Quran and the Sunnah”. In the end, Incharge Readers Club, Ms Rukhsana Riaz explained the objectives and achievements of the Club. She said that the club helped a lot inculcating the reading habits among the students of the centre. She said that the compilation under review has especial worth as the MCMC students were among the participants of that Sufi conference. The review will help understanding the subject and promoting awareness on the use of literary techniques. She said that the media students must be aware of the issues of the regional and global importance. Review session of the readers club was conducted by Ms Raheela Iftikhar and Iqra Shahid. In the beginning of the session Zain ul Abdeen introduced the club and its activities through power point presentation.

Following Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Quaid-e-Awam in their feelings about educations, Pakistan can be transformed into a moderns welfare state. Girls’ exclusive academic performance at the campus shows that every female graduate has the tendencies like Mohtrma Banizar Bhutto to serve the nation. Pakistani youth is potent and vibrant. If guided properly, they can prove the dream of the father of the nation," said the Governor Punjab Sardar Muhammad Latif Khan Khosa while addressing the Convocation 2011 at Hafiz Hayat Campus on March 17, 2011.

While responding to the Vice Chancellor University of Gujrat Prof Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin’s demands, the Governor said that the government is aware of the fast going developments of the university. He assured all help while mediating HEC and the Government of Punjab for granting more funds for the civil work and faculty development program at the varsity.

Earlier the VC welcomed the Chancellor at the Campus. He narrated the history of civil and academic developments of the Campus. He also shed light on the academic environment of the Campus. He said that the administration is committed to provide its students academic and research friendly environment at the campus. The VC urged the Chancellor to play his role in boosting faculty development as the faculty at the Campus is very young and lack PhD qualifications and also to help release funds of the central library and the auditorium.

Later the Registrar Muhammad Akram Bhatti presented the graduates before the Chancellor through their respective directors for the award of degrees. The chancellor decorated the toppers of different academic disciplines with Gold Medals.

Following the convocation ceremony the Chancellor was invited as the chief guest in the ceremony of book lunching of “Maujuda Aalmi Istemari Surat-e-hal Aur Faiz ke Shaairy” compiled by Sheikh Rashid. While addressing the book lunching ceremony, Khosa remarked that the compilation was the inclusion of the papers presented in a Sufi Conference and requested for compilation by his office. He termed this academic effort of the UOG as an example that should be followed by other varsities. He suggested that other campuses too should encourage such activities which may result in to a critique on the different issues of society. The Director Academy of letters Lahore, Altaf Ahmed Qurashi and the Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin also addressed the ceremony and appreciated Sheikh Abdul Rashid for compiling a publication in limited time.

The convocation was attended by large number of parents of graduating students and elite from the area.

Campus at Education Expo 2010

The University of Gujrat participated in the “Education Expo 2010” organized by Jang Media Group at Pearl Continental Hotel, Lahore. Leading public and private sector educational institutions of Pakistan as also some foreign centres of learning were represented there. The Additional Registrar, Media & Publications, organized the UOG’s stall where the university’s publications and informative material about UOG’s academic programmes, curricula, admissions and fee structure were placed. To make the stall more attractive at the venue, organizers established a Free Blood Sugar Testing Camp that was supervised by Vice Principal of Nawaz Sharif Medical College (NSMC), Dr Tanveer Zia Qurashi. A large number of visitors had their blood sugar level tested.
