Research culture is the way to progress and development. Universities need Infrastructure and propitious ambience for the promotion of Research. The University of Gujrat (UOG) is rich in both these components and headlong geared towards the promotion of research. UOG is exploring the possibilities of Research in various fields. Our Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin is bent upon promoting Research Culture at the university and is taking all possible measures for its promotion. In today’s function different departments like C.S, I.T and English Department are collaborating to launch a premier research on language, culture and history. I appreciate the services being rendered by Dr Sarmad Hussain for the launching of ‘Centre for Language and Translation Studies’. His protracted visits and lectures at UOG are very helpful in the evolution of this centre. These ideas were expressed by Dr Tahir Aqeel Registrar UOG while addressing a workshop on “Translation and Technology” organized by the “Center for Language and Translation studies”.

Dr Mudassar Iqbal Chief Guest of the ceremony appreciated the concept of machine Translations and attributed it to the development of artificial intelligence for its successful operation. He also extolled the idea of software development in local languages. Dr Sarmad Hussain Professor of Computer Science and Director “Centre for Language Engineering, Al Khawarzmi Institute of Computer Sciences’’. University of Engineering and Technology (UET) spoke for about 2 hours on the subject. He elaborated the concept of Human Language Technology. Translation Studies is going to create opportunities for communities to access information and communities in their local languages, by enabling them through modern technologies. He discussed in detail the Human Language Technology in its various phases of interconnectivity. He analyzed the Text, Speech and Language Processing. Dr Sarmad was given a very patient hearing by the house and immensely appreciated for his novel ideas and innovative skills.

Early on Mr Ghulam Ali Coordinator Center for Languages and Translation Studies in his introductory remarks highlighted the significance of Technology in Translation Studies. The workshop started with recitation of the Holy Quran by Hafiz Ghulamulla. Ms. Zulekha recited a beautiful Naat. Ms. Aisha Siddiqa and Ms. Amna performed as stage secretaries. Head of the English Departmatment wrapped up the function by giving a vote of thanks especially to the Chief Guest, Guest Speaker and Registrar UOG. A large majority of students form various departments had gathered to listen to the lecture.

New Trends in Bio-Energy and Bio-Materials

Our Need to Generate Alternate Energy Sources is Dire And Real” Says Dr Nizam VC-UOG in His Closing Address to Symposium on “New Trends in Bioenergy and Biomaterials.

The deliberations of this symposium have given us a clue of how to make our university campus all the way green. For this we need to use a combination of different energy resources as a strategy. We need to employ thermal, Biogas and solar panels for generating energy. This university is spending millions of rupees on its energy needs: gas, diesel for generators, electricity. So our need to generate alternate energy sources is dire and real. Each building block can generate a separate energy source for keeping the campus green, energized and thus save millions. Korea can help us in this venture. We are eager to sign MOUs with Korea Professor Jong-In-Han from Korea can extend a helping hand in this significant program. I have received a letter of thanks from Secretary Energy Department Govt. of Punjab Mr Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan for inviting him in this conference. His overview of the energy situation was highly significant and immensely informative. He on his behalf was highly inspired by the ambience of UOG and has termed its environment as vibrant. I congratulate the organizing committee for receiving such a commendatory letter from Secretary Energy Govt. of Punjab.

The Govt. of Punjab has set its Energy Research Centre at UET Kala Shah Kaku, which is funded by the Germans. They have offered us its membership which we thankfully accept. I am happy to note that you have invited several heads of Departments form the Social sciences, like Psychology, Sociology and Economics. I highly appreciate this innovative venture as it will help our project to become broad based. This interdisciplinary approach in Research will definitely deliver dividends. Further this broadening base will help us in identifying and practising ‘SAVING PRACTICES’ which is the dire need of the day. I am immensely thankful to delegates from other universities especially participants from Islamabad Lahore and Korea. I am also thankful to faculty and students who made this symposium a success. I congratulate the organizing committee for this glorious achievement and look forward to practical implementation of deliberated proposals for alternate energy.

As a courtesy Dr Sajid Mehmood presented Dr Nizam with a souvenir and thanked Prof Dr Nizam and Dr Tahir Aqeel for their valuable guidance patronization and support. He also thanked the funding agencies viz HEC and ORIC (UOG), Dr Jong-In-Han from KAIST Korea. Before the close of the function Dr Tahir Aqeel Registrar UOG awarded shields to students and faculty including Mohammad Imran, Najam Farooq, Dr Zunera Aslam, Mohammad Jehanzeb, Mehwish Yaqoob. The two day symposium ended in a jubilant mood, with smiles of having achieved success and with a will and determination to put these deliberated alternatives into practice at the University of Gujrat.

Department Of History and Pakistan Studies has arranged Three Days Photo Exhibition On The Life and Achievements Of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah (Founder of The Nation)

We are going to build a museum cum archives at Ram Piyari Mahal Gujrat which is being donated by Archaeology Department to us. I hope Doctor Ahmed Hussain Qureshi Qila dari and Mr Shareef Kunjahi two great archive keepers of Gujrat will cooperate with us in establishing this museum cum archive, with manuscripts, letters and photographs of historical significance. In this context we have already published the first volume of Gujrat Pedia which spans socio-cultural history of Gujrat. The second volume is in the making. I have also requested Prof Shabber Hussain Shah to archive the history of University of Gujrat. Picture has gained an added significance in the hyper-reality of media communications of today. It has been a great day for me to see the photographic exhibition of Quaid’s different facets of life. Students must watch this exhibition with gusto and care, critically so as to absorb the struggle for Pakistan; Quaid-e-Azam’s charismatic qualities of head and heart and his immense effort of the will to chalk-out a homeland for the Muslims. Quaid-e-Azam’s personal and state life is of immense inspiration and educative value for our youth. Our country is very rich in diversity of diachronic cultures and civilizations like Gandhara, Harrapa and MohinjoDaro. We are trying to develop a multi-disciplinary open academic culture for developing different discourses on all aspects of life. For this we have recently interacted and signed MOU with Netherland’s PUM.
In tandem with this photographic exhibition we are holding a DICE connect 2013, deliberating on innovation, creativity and Industrial-Academia Linkages. Gujrat is a rich creative community. Sir Syed metaphorically called it “ The Greece of India.” I am pretty sure that we will succeed in mobilizing our youth towards greater heights of creativity and innovation. These ideas were expressed by Professor Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin Vice Chancellor University of Gujrat (UOG) in his presidential address after inaugurating the photographic exhibition on the life and achievements of Quaid-e-Azam, at the UOG Hafiz Hayat Campus. This exhibition was arranged by department of History and Pakistan Studies in collaboration with Quaid-e-Azam society and Pakistan Forum, under the leadership of Dr Akhtar Sandhu HOD, who unfortunately was indisposed and so absent from the gathering. Anchor person Syed Shabeer Hussain Shah motivated the house to clap for him in his absence and prayed for his health. Mr Habeeb Ahmed Khan Director General Archives Islamabad personally presented himself at the ceremony along with a lot of exhibitory material and technical advice. Syed Shabeer Hussain Shah performed the function of stage secretary and conducted the meeting, by issuing relevant timely remarks and comments periodically.

Sara Pervez Director British Council expressed immense delight at the ambience of Gujrat University. She said that she was greatly impressed by the structural beauty of the varsity and was bewitched by its openness, creative culture and innovative values. She appreciated the efforts of Mr Habeeb Ahmed Khan Director General National Archives Islamabad and Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin in this very creative exhibition of Quaid’s photographs. Afzal Gondal, an industriast form Gujrat and Fawad Akram a student also addressed the gathering. Habeeb Ahmed Khan DG. National Archives Islamabad in his address detailed the format of the exhibition. He promised to build up an ideal Quaid museum, plus archive. Dr Tahir Aqeel Registrar UOG in his speech delivered a vote of thanks to the Guests and participants. He appreciated the beauty, historical and educative value of the exhibition which proved immensely useful in associating the youth with Pakistan movement and the great leader Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

Design Models and Handicrafts Exhibition at SADA-UOG

Professor Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin inaugurated the Design Models and Handicrafts Exhibition at School of Art Design and Architecture. The Vice Chancellor expressed his delight at the innovative models, handicrafts anddifferently textured rugs. Mr Ghaffar Mohiuddin, Coordinator SADA and explained the up gradation that was in process at SADA and how the potential talents of the students were burgeoning at the campus. He emphasized the creative and innovative significance of SADA and how it is going to contribute immensely towards the development of industrial triangle of Gujrat, Gujranwala and Sialkot and Academia-Industrial linkage at large.

“A Dialogue Between Quantitative And Qualitative Research Paradigms” HEC Professor Dr Asir Ajmal Delivered an Exuberant Lecture on The Above Noted Theme

I am extremely pleased to witness the dialogue not debate between the two basic paradigms of Research qualitative research and quantitative research. It is also one of my favourite subjects. This debate between the two research models and methods has ben going on for years by now. Since the inception of Anthropology as a discipline qualitative methods have come to the fore and have received an added significance in social sciences, humanities, history and culture. A detailed exploration and delineation of this model will be immensely helpful to our students and will give impetus to Research in these disciplines. I have come to realize the significance of multidisciplinary research. I appreciate the visit and lecture of Prof Dr Asir Amjal a renowned researcher of the country working at Government College University G.C.U Lahore. Again kudos to HEC Professor Dr Gulzar working here at UOG for arranging such a significant lecture. I am again happy to find Dr July form HEC on academic four of UOG, collaborative and contributive to this significant event. The final result of this academic exercise is not either/or but complementarity of these two diverse models. By synergizing the two models, a hybrid method can be evolved based on the combinative potential of the two research paradigms which can immensely boost the quality of our research in social sciences, history, literature, art and culture. These views were expressed by Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin Vice Chancellor UOG in his closing address to the research methodology deliberations at the Department of Psychology UOG. Dr Asir Ajmal renowned scion of Amjal family and brilliant academic and educationist Prof Dr Amjal, delivered his exuberant lecture on a dialogue between the two research models. He is well groomed in six languages and has a working knowledge of 44 languages. He has done his post doctorate at the Columbia University USA and is deemed to be an expert in qualitative research method.

He is working as an HEC Professor at GCU Lahore and is a visiting Prof at Ali Institute of Education at Lahore, and center for clinical Psychology at the University of Punjab. He remained president Association of clinical Psychology for 2008-10. He is an exceptionally talented intellectual, academic and educationist of Pakistan. He in his lecture dwelled on the dismantling and demolishing of Newtonian Physics in the 20th century and emergence of Einstein’s theory of relativity; challenging basic postulates of Newtonian Physics and Mechanics and replacing absolutist laws of science by relativity. The emergence of quantum Physics, Uncertainty Principle of Heisenberg, have reinforced the theory of relativity which is a very potent breakthrough in the conceptual principles of science. Similarly chaos theory in Mathematics and Sciences has hit hard at the absolutist conception of science and scientific laws. The operation of 3rd variable and multiple variables have obfuscated the relation of two variables X-Y and rendered them unpredictable. All this amounts to the unreliability of the surety of the method expressed in the maxim, “Physician heal thyself”. Similarly the concept of mean in Social Sciences is rendered hypothetical which comes to inhuman standardized procedure. Subjectivity- objectivity paradox also questions the possibility, “How can objectivity exist in the mind of the perceiver”.

These new developments have demented the so-called absolutist model of scientific virtuosity and arbitrariness. So quantitative methods and premises ought to be merged or combined with quantitative research method. Earlier on Dr Gulzar HEC Professor of Psychology at UOG detailed the comparative study of the two methods covering well over 30 different facets of the two methods; ultimately leading towards the compromise between the two systems for reliable and valid results. Dr Bushra Akram Head Dept. of Physics graced the stage along with the Guest Speaker and Dr Gulzar and remained all ears to the logical development of the subject. She expressed her delight in clearing the cobwebs in the minds of the researchers. Participants and audience enthusiastically riveted their attention on the ground breaking facts, pertaining to Research.

CPSP Team Visits NSMC- UOG Taking Stock of The Availability of Infra-structure for Launching FCPS Four Year Courses

I heartily welcome the team of CPSP especially Dr Gulam Asghar Channa, Prof Dr Rakhshan Shaheen Najmi at Nawaz Shareef Medical College (NSMC) at University of Gujrat (UOG). It is a moment of great jubilation that the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan have condescended to visit NSMC at UOG so as to take stock of the facilities available here for commissioning the higher studies of Four Year fellowship classes at NSMC for awarding degrees of FCPS. By all means it is an upgradation of academics here. I have no hesitation in saying that the immaculate and inspiring leadership of our Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin and charismatic qualities of his character have worked wonders here, at NSMC. Within a very short span of time i.e a little more than 4 years this College has been turned into one of the most prestigious institutions of Pakistan. We believe in nothing but the best in academics, medical practice and technological development. We believe in fostering a medical institution which can contribute towards the excellence in professional competence and thereby contribute towards the knowledge-based economy in providing the best possible medical facilities to the populace and public health and in that capacity to help usher in a democratic ethos and in bolstering intellectual talent, intelligence and human resource into skilled, efficient and humanized physicians and surgeons, contributing towards the welfare of the populace.

These ideas were expressed by Principal NSMC Dr Sajjad Hussain on the visit of an inspection team of CPSP Pakistan. He introduced not only the teachers at the university but also told about the activities and achievement of NSMC. Head of Surgery Dept. Dr Abid Basheer dwelled at large on the structure, facilities available at the college and introduced the sterling services performed at the teaching hospital of Aziz Bhatti Shaheed hospital. He emphasized the quality of education and Research at the Deptt. and expressed satisfaction and delight in performing the most complicated operations successfully. Head of obstetrics and Gynecology Dept. Dr Syeda Shaista Waheed introduced the key features of her department and informed that a 40 bed Gyni ward was in operation under the direct surveillance of NSMC. Similarly cutting edge facilities in equipment and expertise were available at laboratories and operation theatres. She assured the team experts that all norms and etiquettes shall be observed at her ward under the direct leadership of CPSP. Dr Shahida Tarar Hussain detailed the visiting team about the precautions and prophylactic programs about AIDS and other communicable diseases in progress at NSMC. She narrated the details of the 6 (Six) counseling centers and 12 (Twelve) surveillance centers in operation in Gujrat under NSMC patronage.

CPSP team appreciated the meteoric rise of NSMC and the dedicated and diligent services of the faculty and administration. They expressed their satisfaction at the requisite facilities, equipment and technologies available at the college. They approved the infrastructure of the college and extolled the excellent ambience at the university, which was really propitious to the burgeoning talents of the students. They also expressed their delight at the innovative research culture being promoted at the varsity. They expressed pleasure at the student-faculty rapport prevailing at NSMC. Again there appeared excellent coordination and colleagueship among the doctors working at ABS Hospital and NSMC faculty. They took round of the college and hospital and inspected every nook and cranny of the institution and appeared entirely satisfied at the affairs of the NSMC. So there is every likelihood that soon FCPS classes will be allowed at the NSMC-UOG.

Nano Technology Laboratory Inaugurated at Physics Department UOG

Professor Doctor Mohammad Nizamuddin Vice Chancellor, University of Gujrat (UOG) inaugurated today Nano technology lab at the Physics Department of UOG. Mr Sohail Warraich renowned anchorman, media icon and writer was the Chief Guest. Registrar UOG Dr Tahir Aqil was accompanying the VC along with Head of Physics Department Dr Majid, senior faculty and notables from the administration. Professor Dr Nizam expressed his delight at the inauguration of this high-tech lab and termed it a boon for research and a blessing for scholars and students. He expressed his hope that after being equipped with this lab Physics Department is likely to contribute more effectively in Research and Industry Academia Linkage.

Nano technology is the study of material bodies at extremely small and divided particles at the extremely micro level of 10-9 drastic changes occur at that micro sub division level. It is studied with the help of ‘Ultra violet spectrophotometer single beam’ – a machine designed for this purpose. At micro Nano size level specific properties are changed abruptly. This course of Nano technology is designed for BS-MSc, MS & M Phil level. The name of the course is, solid state physics. It shall be taught by Nano specialists: Dr Majid Asst-Prof Head of the Department and Atif Ali M Phil lecturer. Nano technology is employed in almost all scientific subjects like Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry and Medicine. It is usefully employed in cosmetics, Nano bullet proof jackets, Detectors, mines, fine cutting, wires and tubes and in medicine for diseases like cancer. The Physics Department is appreciably upgraded with this new lab and is likely to contribute more effectively towards Industry and help in developing Academia Industrial linkage.

I have been all ears to the very thought provoking speeches from the outstanding intellectuals and innovators gathered here at UOG. I appreciate DICE-2013 coordinator Dr Mudassar Iqbal for his efforts in making today’s event a great success. I am looking forward to the mega event of December 2013, of DICE connect, which I am pretty sure with the dedicated and persistent efforts that DICE is making will be a great show. Not only engineering and industrial innovative goods and products will be in the lime light but also innovation in Social Sciences, Humanities and Culture will be on display at the UOG. Dr Khursheed Qureshi from USA; the originator of DICE way back in 2007; has been very kind to visit UOG. I assure him that UOG will spare no effort in making his great ideas a success. Academia-Industrial collaboration, inducting new vision and stuff into the industrial and productive field is a dire need of the day. I believe in the intellectual trio: initiate, inspire and innovate. We here at UOG are trying to create a multidisciplinary culture where various disciplines interact to create the best possible quality of life and culture, for which programs like DICE, industrial Academia Collaboration, Knowledge exchange, creation of new knowledge, knowledge economy are sine-qua-non. Research is our modus operandi. We have already designed a model for three wheeler cheap family car at SADA. Soon we are going to collaborate with Industrial sector for its production. Innovative ideas with in no time must be transformed into products. This is the competitive strategy in today’s market. I must also appreciate the large scale innovative developments of HEC that have brought about a hectic change in our otherwise slumbering and stagnant academics.

Similarly British Council has always been at the forefront of intellectually productive and innovative ventures. I highly prize their cooperation and collaboration in the DICE. I am also looking forward to stable and long lasting partnership with the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Gujrat, Gujranwala and Sialkot. Together we are likely to transform UOG into the hub of the utmost creativity and innovation. These ideas were expressed by Professor Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin Vice Chancellor UOG in his concluding presidential address at the DICE-collaborative ceremony at UOG; where industry-academia partners joined heads to boost innovation and entrepreneurship, industry and culture. Chambers of Commerce and Industry form Gujrat Sialkot and Gujranwala, The British Council, SMEDA, Institute of Space Technology, Metro Industries, Fan Industries and HEC made their very effective representation at the event.

Dr Khursheed Qureshi, from USA the originator of the themes of DICE, its mentor and technical adviser himself participated in the mega-event and vented out his very original views in appreciation of the UOG’s enthusiasm, dynamism, mobility and headlong participation in the revolutionary project, spearheading against decadent and out of date traditional practices, for necessary and abiding change in the mental make up of our people. Speaking on the occasion he said, “I have not found this much of enthusiasm in the whole of DICE history of 5 years that I have found today at the University of Gujrat (UOG). Digitization, innovation, commercialization, entrepreneurship are all strategies and tools for building up a culture, based on creative instincts and intelligence. When creativity becomes a way of life, a process, the purpose of life is achieved. I am hopeful that within the next 5 to 7 years, innovative ideas and devices would become as common as footpath wares. That would be the height of creativity. While running after state of the art technologies we must never forget the concept of speed and momentum. Innovative ideas and precepts must be fastly converted into products so as to keep an edge in the market.

Innovation is a resource which is endless and inexhaustible. We have to develop a culture of thinking out of the box.” Speaking in the DICE connect, Sara Pervez Project Manager British Council appreciated the knowledge exchange programs, inclusion of HEC in the policy dialogue of DICE; its effort for digitization and economic development by harnessing the intellectual cum academic resource of the nation through Academia-Industrial linkages and economic development; by promoting small and medium sized Entrepreneurship. DICE connect 2012 at Taxila was a breakthrough with 1200 participants representing different sectors of industry, commerce, education and other facets of national life. She assured her wholesale cooperation and participation in making DICE-connect 2013 a grand success; ushering in a new era in the academic industrial, commercial and cultural spheres of national life.

Mr Sultan Tiwana from SMEDA focused on the motivation, inspiration and mobilization of students and spearheading them at the vortex of socio-cultural change. Mirza Imtiaz Ahmed CEO Metro Industries-Gujrat welcomed DICE as a boon and a stable locus for the development of productive triangle of Gujrat, Gujranwala and Sialkot. It is high time we do away with reverse Engineering and induct new vision into our products. Two Days Workshop on Research Methodology was organized by the Department of Psychology, University of Gujrat, on Nov. 28 and 29, 2012. This was exclusively for the M. Phil students of Psychology to enhance their knowledge and skills in the area of research for initiating, understanding, conducting and writing with proper requirements. These students have almost completed their course work and presently, are at the verge of initiating their research work.

The Research Methodology Workshop was inaugurated by the Director, Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Farish Ullah on Nov. 28, 2012 at 9:00 a.m.in S-07 Hall of UOG. In his inaugural address he appreciated the efforts of faculty and M. Phil students of Dept. of Psychology and especially, The resource persons including Prof. Dr. Gulzar Ahmad, the chief organizer of the Workshop, Dr. Bushra Akram, Assistant Professor and HOD, Mr. Yousaf Jamal, Assistant Professor, and Ms. Aliyha Ghumman, lecturer were from the Department of Psychology. Dr. Farish Ullah emphasized the need for indigenous research with consistent efforts to promote research activity in our universities. He indicated the importance of qualitative research along with quantitative research. He advised the audience that research should be a lifelong activity for the academicians that contribute to the rank and position of the professionals and the universities where they are working in.

Dr.Gulzar, in his welcome address thanked Dr.Mohammad Nizamuddin,the Vice Chancellor, University of Gujratfor his motivation and support for the promotion of research culture in the University of Gujrat. Dr. Gulzaroutlined the importance of research in the present globalized world for socioeconomic development and the creation of free independent, powerful and highly civilized society. The presentations, interactive discussions and mind-on and hands-on activities were so interesting that the previously planned one day workshop had to extend into two days in the great academic interest of the students. The faculty and students gave highly encouraging feedback and desired to have further such workshops for additional learning, development and promotion of research culture in the University of Gujrat.

Nawaz Shareef Medical College (NSMC) of the University of Gujrat (UOG) believes in producing not only competent professional physicians and surgeons but also good human beings. We believe in doctors with a human touch. To achieve that excellence you have to go beyond the book. You have to learn something more than medicine, to avoid becoming a robotic doctor. You have to indulge in poetry, music, performing arts, learn communication skills, waiting skills, decoration and designing, socio-cultural make up of society and last but not the least latest developments in the internet. You are lucky to have direct contact with human beings; so equip yourself with human sciences, and think in incremental terms and not in discursive dimensions. You should be more like creative artists.Secondly you have to negotiate a culture that believes in specialists. MBBS is only a beginning and a passport for entry in the profession but you have to achieve much higher and additional degrees of specialists for contributing towards human happiness. Research is the modus operandi for achieving excellence in medicine along with human sciences. A doctor must know his population. We are the sixth largest population in the world.We have to indulge in community medicine and build more Health Centres. A doctor is in and for a community. He must be able to decipher the disease pattern in a community and work also on elimination of diseases by creating better environment than only treating diseases. Survey Research on housing composition, life style, disease factors beyond laboratory should also be the desired model for knowing reality. Then hospital records and patient history is crucial for learning morbidity patterns. So statistical assistance must be employed in medicine. Internal map of morbidity pattern of communicable diseases, chronic infectious diseases should be treated with preventable medicine.

Seminars and conferences can help in engendering latest knowledge on the subject. Columbia University in the United States, where I have also had the privilege to work, started socio-medical science 70 years ago, as pioneers. 70 scientists are working round the clock and researching on all kinds of infectious and chronic diseases. Today Harvard University is awarding degree on alternate medicine. So much is going on in cyberspace which you can absorb and make use of in Research. I am convinced that 30% of increase in social sciences in your curriculum is the indispensable need of the day. I must congratulate the principal, faculty and students for making outstanding achievements in the shortest possible time. I am happy to share this colorful opening ceremony of the new comers. I congratulate and welcome the new students and their parents for having been successful in entering this prestigious institution on merit. These ideas were expressed by Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin Vice Chancellor University of Gujrat in his address to the newly admitted MBBS students, in an orientation ceremony at NSMC, UOG. I approve the initiation of ‘Counseling and Guidance Services in the psychology Department of the University of Gujrat (UOG) right away and will extend all possible material and moral support to facilitate you in this noble venture. It is a great day and I congratulate HEC Professor Dr. Gulzar Ahmed, HOD Psychology, Bushra Akram, Aleeha Ghumman, faculty and all others on this auspicious day of inauguration. Madam Jahan Ara can help you as an interior designer in equipping your Centre. Two years back we hired two psychologists as whole time counselors. They were not willing to teach any course and were of the opinion that Counseling and Teaching do not go together.

I disagreed – every teacher must be a counselor, a mentor and guide. So I believe that in dispensing your wares to larger sections of university, well-advised and trained teachers in the art of counseling shall go a long way in disbursing the wealth of mental health, wellbeing, and sanity around the campus. In America today a psychological counselor can be hired for $250 an hour because it is taken to be a highly skilled profession. In Pakistan it has remained a taboo but gradually its acceptance in increasing. Many schools especially ‘Special Centres’ in Pakistan have started providing this service. This service can be expanded to include Psychological Testing Programs.

Dr. Farooqi has made an excellent critique of Western Society. She says mentally ill are institutionalized but in Eastern society especially amongh Muslims love, guidance, help and support is given by the family and friends. But in Muslim societies all the same there are wider gaps, contrasts and differences. For example in Saudi Arabia crime are much less than in Egypt. Why so, when both are Muslim countries and have a common heritage of Islamic religion and civilization. The difference is demographical. Egypt harbors migrant population whereas Saudi Arabia has a well settled population. I appreciate Dr. Gulzar’s comprehensive and ambitious agenda. But let me remind you that we are likely to have psychiatrists at Nawaz Shareef Medical College (NSMC). Psychiatry employs the tool of medicines in fighting mental and psychological ailments and the main trend is that psychologists work under the supervision of psychiatrists and forward seriously ill patients to them.

I remember a movie “One who flew over the cuckoo’s Nest” which depicts the enigma of an outstanding individual pushed to medicine on the pretext of abnormality. Drugs are sold and marketed. A professor from England demolished the western canon of mental abnormality by the argument that the Western pharmaceuticals are earning trillions of dollors by marketing medicines which are being indiscriminately used by people for immediate but temporary relief. Medicines like laxotanil, antidepressants are being sold whereas they are hardly needed in the East where there always have been strong support systems like family, friends and neighbours. If proper counseling in done we can save ourselves from the negative effects of medicines. So by research we can develop our own models which are in harmony with our cultures values and traditions.

Besides helping faculty and students in anxiety, hypertension, traumas, phobias and complexes, the department can introduce modern gadgets by making innovative use of modern communication technology. A helpline can be launched through net and phone call to extend support to anonymous consumers. Many people fear the stigma of consulting a counselor and prefer to remain confidential in getting treatment. Counselling is basically a talking process. It is an extension of Freudian psycho analysis. In the words of Lacan, “Talking cure without medicines is the scientific psycho-analytic treatment discovered by Freud; using language as a tool for cure, because the unconscious the source of human desire and the mythical centre for the exploits of libido is also structured like a language”. As for naming the centre I disapprove my name and personally I do not believe in it. It should be named after our heroes like Ibn e Khuldoon etc.

These views were expressed by Prof Dr. Nizamuddin in his address at the opening Ceremony of “Counseling and Guidance Services’ at the Dept. of Psychology – UOG. Aleeha Ghumman who is a main actor in organizing this program also acted as the stage secretary. In her introductory address she welcomed Mrs Jehan Ara Nizam and other participants of the Seminar. She introduced the theme of the seminar. Head of the Department of Psychology Ms. Bushra Akram in her welcome note talked of inter and intra challenges to individuals in modern day life. She endorsed the idea of addressing widespread psychological ailments through the efficacious process of counseling. Dr. Gulzar in his detailed address forwarded his ten point objectives, as agenda for change. His address was packed with scholarly details and references. He took a contextual view of present day socio-psychological scenario and advanced the needed role of a counselor. In enshring the ideals of freedom and democracy in the present day high-tech society, demands extra ordinary skills and competence of the individual, to cope with the fast changing and moving life scenario. He took stock of the psycho-somatic diseases pervading the social organism and institutions and stressed the need to combat them through human responses like counseling.

Ms Aleeha Ghumman expressed a vote of thanks to the Vice Chancellor by recapitulating his very original ideas and appreciated them as innovative and creative. She expressed the confidence that under his sterling leadership she along with her colleagues would leave no stone unturned it translating this humanized program of counseling into a success story by gearing all possible resources and talents.

Seminar at UOG “Allama Iqbal and Contemporary Issues”

Iqbal was not only a poet but also a great thinker and philosopher. Iqbal influenced the intellectual elite of his times and guided the Muslim nation like a helmsman. He inspired the educated classes of Indo-Pak subcontinent through his poetry in particular and masses at large. His poetry provided a new vigour and inspiration to the struggling Muslims of Indo Pak subcontinent for their rights and independence. His poetry serves as the guideline for the present Muslim Ummah as a whole. These views were expressed by Prof Shabber Hussain Shah, in the University of Gujrat (UOG) Thinkers Forum at Hafiz Hayat Campus. The proposition of the seminar before the forum was “Allama Mohammad Iqbal and Contemporary Issues”. Speaking on the occasion Director Evening Program Mr. Mohammad Mushtaq Bhatti opined that it was infact the poetry of Iqbal which regenerated a spirit of revolution among the Muslims for independence and liberty. He jolted the Muslims out of their deep slumber and inspired them to deeds and actions. He presented the idea of Pakistan. All our ills of today can be cured if we follow the pristine thought of Dr. Allama Iqbal.

Director Media and Publications Sheikh Abdul Rasheed said that each and every verse of Iqbal has the power and motivation to ameliorate the lot of the Muslims by reformation. He shakes us by recounting the glorious and heroic deeds of the past. He inspires the youth by his idealistic revolutionary vision of ‘the best is yet to be’. His symbol of eagle like that of Nietzsche explicates struggle for high and grand ideas. He regenerates a sense of Identity among the Muslims by making them conscious of their ego. Iqbal can serve as a beacon light for the nation today, which is lost in ambiguities and contradictions. Dr. Zahid Yousaf emphasized Iqbal’s appeal to the concept of Ego; solely to generate the dynamos of energy and strength for the noble cause of independence and autonomy.

Prof Humayun Ghauri said that taking light from Iabal, we can regenerate our national ethos and move forward towards knowledge research and progress.

The month of Ramzan is a divine month and so it has an edge of superiority over other months. It is a barometer of the over all goodness prevailing in socio-cultural conditions of a society. Fasting purifies ones body and soul. The sterling virtues inculcated by fasting should remain proactive for the whole of the year round. We are unfortunately trapped in ritualistic practices and do not internalize the ethical concepts and values. Religious practices should usher in abiding changes in the individual and the society as a whole. The challenge staring us in our faces is the failure to steer clear of social evils from our dear country which unfortunately on the contrary are multiplying. In spite of the fact that Pakistan is the second country in the world after US in the distribution and disbursing of personal charity, even then there is no transformation in the over all status of the society and virtue appears few and far between. We need to put into practice Islamic way of life by character building and training our youth. These ideas were expressed by Prof Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin Vice Chancellor University of Gujrat while addressing a seminar at UOG on “Blessings of Ramazan” which was jointly organized by Dept. of History and Pakistan studies and Dept. of Islamiat.

Dr Nizam in his winding up speech thanked all the honorable scholars for having come to grace UOG with their meditative Islamic thought. He also thanked the organizers especially Prof Syed Shabeer Hussain Shah, Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Director Media and Publications, Dr Akthar Sindhu, HOD History and Dr Mohammad Nawaz HOD Islamiat. In all seven Ulema spoke on the occasion and addressed to different aspects of fasting. Dr Mohammad Nawaz in his opening address welcomed the guest scholars, for making themselves available to attend to an important and popular ritual, and highlighted the significance of the seminar. Allama Syed Altafur Rehman appreciated and thanked Dr Nizam VC for holding such an important seminar. He prized the virtue of charity and sacrifice as the leading virtue. Further one must desist form backbiting and must not inflict harm an any person with his tongue or hand. He emphasized the virtue of fair and bonafide earnings. Talking on the topic of “Fasting and Virtue” Sahibzada Ghulam Basheer Naqashbandi emphasized the element of divinity pervading in human makeup. The creation of man is not without purpose. Man constitutes body and soul. Bodily needs are animal needs but he must cater to the spiritual needs, which constitute his divine subjectivity. We must counteract desire to elevate our spiritual existence. Professor Khursheed Ahmed Saeedi from International Islamic University Islamabad gave a very exhaustive talk on Fasting in Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism Sikhism, Jainism and Confucianism. Making a comparative study he proved that Islam had the best objectives for promoting fasting which is no less than raising the divine stature of man.

Dr Syed Talat Iqbal form Nawaz Shareef Medical College (NSMC) discussed the physical aspects of fasting. It reduces weight. It burns up extra fats and cholesterol in the body. It eliminates disease. Furthermore it is a good occasion to get rid of intoxicants. Sahibzada Saeed Shah Gujrati member Islamic ideological Council delivered a very effective speech. He termed the month of Ramazan as the month of blessings, forgiveness, virtues, services, prayers and escape form punishment. Fasting forges a direct link between man & God. God himself will bestow many blessings on those who are fasting. Fasting is tantamount to befriending God. Another great sanctity of Ramzan is that the Holy Quran dawned in this month. Lailat ul Qadar is the night of nights and praying on that night equals 1000 months of prayers.

Dr Tariq Saleem in his address on the topic “Fasting and Social Welfare” detailed virtue as self-control and self-sacrifice. By controlling desire we can develop our spirituality. Prophet was highly fond of this month. It is the month which saw Prophet takes on the office of Prophet hood. The Holy Quran dawned in this month. The battle of Badar and victory of Mecca also occurred during this month. We must dispense large amounts of charity during this month to help the down trodden. Agha Mohammad Raza Abidi from Lahore gave a very impressive talk on Fasting and character building. He emphasized the need for helping the poor and the needy. We must dye ourselves in the spirit of Quran and put Islamic thoughts into practice. Professor Syed Shabeer Hussain Shah in his closing address thanked all the Guest Speakers for knocking on the conscience of the audience. He imputed the fast growth of University for the honesty and good faith of its leadership. He announced to hold a ‘Seerat Conference’ soon.

I appreciate the services of those who have organized such a spiritual and splendid ceremony like Seerat conference.” These were the thoughts expressed by Professor Dr Tahir Aqeel, Registrar UoG, Gujrat as Chief Guest of the Seerat Conference held at UoG College for Women, Railway Road Gujrat.

“Islamic values provide guidance for all and for ever. The students are our precious assets and they are our future and the protector of our coming generations.” These were the feelings conveyed by Mrs Jahan Ara Nizam. Madam Qaria Parveen Butt, Principal UoG College for Women and students welcomed all the guests of honor including Professor Syed Shabbir Hussain Shah, Advisor to the Vice Chancellor and Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Director Media & Publications warmly. Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz, HoD Department of Islamic Studies UoG highlighted the importance of passion in the life of Holy Prophet. He advised the students to follow the exemplary life pattern of the Holy Prophet in every field of life. He adorned his speech quoting verses from Quran and Sayings of the Prophet. He opined that ‘To follow Prophet’s life is the key of success for each Muslim’. Faculty Member of the Department of Islamic Studies, Nadeem Abbas while addressing the conference gave a comprehensive description of illuminating and revealing episodes from the life of the Prophet. The Prophet had focused his companions to behave gently and affectionately towards womenfolk. A saying of the Prophet is “Don’t hate your daughters, they are blessing for you.”

Students of the college Aisha and Tahira Yousaf presented Naat e Rasool and Sayings of the Prophet. Ms Taqdees talked about disgrace of the Prophet and our role. Ms Hajira gave a speech about the current progress and the scientific achievements of the Muslims. Professor Dr Tahir Aqeel and Mrs Jahan Ara Nizam distributed prizes among the student speakers and reciters of that conference. Memorial gifts were also presented to Professor Dr Tahir Aqeel, Mrs Jahan Ara Nizam, Dr Muhammad Nawaz and Nadeem Abbas by Principal Qaria Parveen Butt. Qaria Parveen Butt anchored the entire ceremony and recited naats and narratives form life of the Prophet enlightening the minds of the audiences.

Concluding the conference, collective prayers were offered for the welfare and progress of the country, UoG and for health of its Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin.

He had a good taste for literature. He himself was a man of letters.” The Registrar, UOG, Dr Tahir Aqeel told the staff chairing a Condolence Reference observed in the memory of Dr Mumtaz Hussain, Ex HoD, Department of English, UOG, Gujrat.

Raza-i-Mustafa, Faculty Member of Department of English,said that DrMumtazHussain had anattractive personality. He was a committed teacher and his relations with his students were exemplary. He had a good taste for poetry—both English and Urdu. The sudden news of his death stunned everybody in the UOG.

Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Director Media & Publications UOG expressing his deep condolences on the sudden death of Dr Mumtaz Hussain told that his personality was like a patron. He was affectionate and all of us had a great love for him. All of us gathered here regret his sudden death.

Concluding the reference, Dr Muhammad Nawaz, HoD Islamic Studies paid his tributes to the personality of Dr Mumtaz Hussain and prayed Allah to bless his soul with peace. He also gave a sermon about the importance of prayer for our deceased.

Professor Sajida Vandal CEO THAAP and Ex-Principal of NCA, giving her concluding remarks, appreciated the wisdom and eloquence of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin. She told that Professor Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin is an enlightened mind and he has struggled hard to flourish UOG from a mere educational institution to a high institution of learning. UOG is serving the citizens of Gujrat in reality. Gujrat is a small city but founding of UOG is a great event here. She said that small towns are the heart of a nation but the governments are in the practice of ignoring the welfare and progress of small towns. The chief guest, Col Muhammad Ilyas, prominent scholar and poet,expressed that people of Gujrat excel in every field of life. He appreciated the amenities of UOG in the fields of cultural, social and academicals promotion. According to him, UOG has become the right place of Gujrat where Gujrat can be seen at its largest.

Earlier on, Professor Syed Shabbir Hussain Shah presented his talk about the impact of University of Gujrat on history and politics of Gujrat. In his talk he said that UOG has become an international institute of high learning because of the commendable efforts of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin. Gujrat has a long academical history, so Gujrat was a fit feeding area for establishing a University here. UOG has become a center of excellence and its grading is very high as conducted by HEC. He also described the ethnic and commercial history of Gujrat. According to him, new generations studying in UOG will help to change the socio-political scenario of Gujrat and its adjacent areas. Dr Azhar Mahmood Chaudhary presented a cultural survey of Gujrat in his talk. The glimpses from rich cultural history of Gujrat were prominent features of his talk. He decorated his talk by quoting couplets from the poetry of prominent poets of Gujrat.

In the second session, ODIUM Art Society UOG lead by Professor Ghaffar Mohiuddin and Haroon Habib, presented a social-reformist play “Naseeban de Doli”. Theme of that play was deprivation of girls’ share in property. The play was very energetic and every actor played his role immaculately. All the audiences applauded high and paid compliments to the participants of that play.

In the end, a soiree was conducted in which Mian Muhammad Bakhash’s famous Saif-ul-Mulukwas sung in different raggs and dialects by the local artists including Dr Azhar MahmoodCh, Ustad Fayyaz Ali Khan, Ch Shabbir Ahmad and Imran Shah.

All honorable guests and foreign delegates made a departure for Lahore in the evening appreciating for organizing such an informative and splendid last day session by University of Gujrat.

“I am thankful to my diligent, dutiful and sincere Team for assisting me in the speedy and swift progress of UOG. I am fortunate and grateful to Almighty that I have been blessed with ten such professional officials in the very beginning of my project. Today we have gathered here to pay tributes to their fruitful services for UOG. This Farewell is to assure them that they will always live in our thoughts and their sweet memories will bloom forever in the atmosphere of UOG. Each of them has performed his duties so honestly and devotedly that UOG has gained a national recognition in such a short span of time. It is an auspicious occasion in the history of UOG that we are faring goodbye to all of them and in this way we are laying a new tradition in the history of UOG. I also appreciate the services of officials who have helped in organizing this function.” These compliments were paid by the Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin on the Farewell Gathering conducted in honour of departing 11 Senior Officers of UOG. The Guests of Honour of this Farewell Gathering were the Former Registrar Muhammad Akram Bhatti, Ex-Registrar and Director Coord. & Implementation NSMC (Nawaz Sharif Medical College) Syed Khizar Zaman Mahdi, Treasurer Muhammad Usman, Controller Examination Professor Maqsood Akhtar, Director A & C Mrs Azra Ghanni, Director Engineering Dr Muhammad Jamil, Dy Treasurer Syed Shamim Ahmad Shah, Admin Officer Ch Muhammad Anwar, Accounts Officer Muhammad Hanif, and the former Principals, Professor Muhammad Aslam, Mrs Kausar Mumtaz, and Dr Shaheen Mufti.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin presided over this Farewell Function while the new Registrar of UOG Dr Tahir Aqeel was the Chief Guest. Director Media & Publications Sheikh Abdul Rashid conducted this Farewell Gathering as Stage Secretary excellently. The participants of the function also appreciated the services of Mrs Jahan Ara Nizam in designing and getting prepared souvenirs for the departing officers. Professor Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin acknowledged the services of all those officers and paid tributes to their loyalty and affection towards the institution, their honesty and dedication towards their duties. The Vice Chancellor also added that the traditions set by these officers will become a viable model for the later. The people of the university have a great love for them and they are departing with love and affection.

At the end all the former officers were presented with commemorative souvenirs of UOG Model by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin and he also gave the concluding remarks. The senior officers of UOG, the HODs, Senior Faculty and other participants were later served lunch.

UOG wins 11 prizes in the Punjab Youth Festival

The sports teams of UOG have won 11 prizes in the Punjab Youth Sports Festival 2012 at Lahore. UOG Teams have won First Positions in five games and secured Second Positions in six games. Earlier on, UOG Teams had won Positions in different games at Divisional Punjab Youth Sports Festival 2012.

The Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin has congratulated the Director Sports, Mr Mushtaq Bhatti and Deputy Director Sports, Mr Akhlaq Ahmad, all the Team Members and specially the prize-winners. According to the Vice Chancellor, all of them have struggled hard to lime light the name of UOG. It is hoped that the Sports Wing will secure many more prizes in the ensuing competitions.

To date, the Handicraft Boys Team of UOG has won First prize. Other teams including Drama, Technical Project and Short Film have also won First Prizes. Further, the Handicraft Girls Team and Boys Teams, Qiraat, Arm Wrestling, Karate and Taekwondo have secured Second Positions.

Naqash Saeed in Qirrat, Waleed Anwar in Arm Wrestling, Ajmal in Karate and Umer Farooq in Taekwondo have won second positions. Punjab Youth Sports Festival 2012 is in full glow and more successes for UOG are expected in the ensuing games.

Special Prayers offered the rapid recovery of Malala Yousufzai

Special prayers were offered for Malala Yousafzai at the University of Gujrat (UOG). Administration faculty and students prayed to God Almighty with tears flowing through their eyes and with very heavy hearts for the life of Malala Yousaf.

May she fully recover from the bullet wounds perpetrated on her by inhuman, brutal religious fanatics. She is a daughter of the soil and the nation can be truly proud of her. Prayers were offered for Malala in various departments of the varsity. Female faculty and students offered prayers for Malala under the leadership of Mrs Jehan Ara Nizam.

On Friday prayers were offered for Malala under the prayer leadership of Professor Dr Mohammad Nawaz. He lectured on the brutal attack on Malala and her heroic defiance of parochialism, sectarianism and fanaticism.Thousands of people at UOG condemned the heinous and cowardly action of the dogmatic and rabid mullas, representing obscurantism.

I have been pleased to visit Darul Uloom Mohammadia Ghausia Zia-ul-Quran of Bokan Shareef Gujrat and inspired by the creative heterogeneous mixture of religious and secular worldly education. Secondly this madrasa tends not only to disseminate knowledge but also believes in character building. In prize distribution ceremony Rana Mohammad Younas was the stage secretary. Verses of the Holy Quran were recited by Qari Mohammad Saqib. Qari Ghulam Bahaul Haq recited Naat. Sahibzada Hamid Farooq Bokhari in his welcome speech appraised the momentous achievements of Dr Nizam’s career and also detailed the outstanding features of his own institution Darul Uloom Mohammadia Ghousia. He prized his achievement in the liberal approach where religious education was mixed-up with secular knowledge. Peer Syed Zahid Siddique Shah Bokhari in his brief address reported that Darul Ullom has built up and spread 38 branches in different cities. He vented out his aspiration for his students to achieve the highest possible education PhD and serve humanity and the nation by their blot less character and matchless inspiration. At the end DrNizam and Peer Syed Zahid Siddique Shah, gave away the prizes to position holders. Tauqeer Ahmed, Yousaf Abbas, Rafaqat Mahmood were given prizes for managing Khushboo-e-Karam News paper. All the twelve teachers of Daul Uloom were given lifetime achievement awards. Special prize was given to Zainab Nawaz for topping in Matric Gujranwala Board with 845 marks. Similarly Shaukat Ali was given prize for obtaining position in F.A Gujranwala board with 873 marks,Humera Ashraf for BA Punjab University position with 575 marks. A two volume set of writings of Peer Karam Shah were given away to Sheikh Abdul Rashid, MrMushtaqAhmed Bhatti, Dr Mohammad Nawaz HOD Islamiat, Prof Humayun Khan Ghauri, Prof Nadeem Abbas, MrZahidBasheer, Dr Mohammad Nizam was gifted a copy of the 7 vol. Zia-ul-Quran of Peer Karam Shah and a 7 vol. Zia-ul-Nabiagain of Peer Karam Shah.Dr Prof Nizam presented a copy of poetical rendering in Urdu by AllamaAsghar Ali KausarWarraich to Peer ZahidSiddique shah for the institution.

Our Salvation as a nation lies in our youth

It is the third laptop distribution at UOG in which laptops are being given away purely on merit. I highly appreciate the vision of Chief Minister Mr. Shahbaz Shareef for this unique gesture of linking youth with knowledge. The world is getting digitized and laptop has become an indispensable tool for studies and research. Our salvation as a nation lies in our youth. It is time we make valuable investment in grooming our youth. 25 years ago Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia invested billions of dollars to impart skill development to their youth and sent them abroad for higher education. Today they have become Asian Tigers. We have developed UOG Financial Aid Program to support the needy. PEEF scholarships are already available for poor but talented students. We have tagged all scholarships conditional to their good grades. Academic excellence is our target and for the talented, UOG will spare no effort and move heaven and earth to financially support them.
