A big crowd supported the Muswellbrook greyhound races over the weekend.

The Muswellbrook greyhound club allowed free entry for people to support Muswellbrooks leg of the New South Wales greyhound country challenge.
Mighty Albert blitzed the field on his ever run on the track.

Racing Club Secretary Dennis Bamback said that the decision to open the gates and have free entry produced the biggest crowd he can remember at Muswellbrook for some time.

Motorists are advised that school speed restrictions will be enforced until the end of the school year in December.

Upper hunter students will test our local waterways as part of national river week.

65 students from Scone, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Aberdeen and Merriwa will this week check the health of the Hunter, Goulburn, Pages and Isis Rivers and local creeks.

They are taking part in the MY River Hunter program coordinated by Oz GREEN

Oz Green coordinator said this was the first time the program would be used in the hunter and that it was exciting to have so many schools involved.

A controlled burn is being undertaken in Towarri national park north of scone.

New South Wales national parks and wildlife services are caring out the hazard reduction burns over a 240 hectare area in the middle brook region of the park.

NPWS Area Manager Dave Brown said that People in the vicinity of the burn area are advised that it is likely that there will be some smoke in the area,

Applications for singletons mayoral education scholarships are due soon.

Singleton students looking to further their studies could apply for a three thousand dollar grant.

All applications for the program had to be received by this Friday at the latest.

The twenty thousand resident Huntlee Development could one day still go ahead.
The New South Wales government yesterday decided not to contest a court case challenging the estates development.
The government felt that after similar development land swapping cases were knocked back by the land court that it would not succeed.

Planning Minister Kristina Keneally said that if the owner of Huntlee were to lodge a new application to have the land rezoned then it would be reassessed.

The coal association and New South Wales minerals councils have backed the coalitions changes to the proposed emission trading bill.

The bill which is set to feature a tax on coal mining will be negotiated this week in parliament,

NSW Minerals Council Chief Executive, Dr Nikki Williams.

The Coalition’s proposal to exclude fugitive emissions from coal mining is one of several positive amendments which have been put forward. Dr Williams said the change would save coal industry jobs and was a win for regional NSW.

School speed restrictions have kicked back in force today

Forty kilometer restrictions will be back in force during nominated hours from today to coincide with school holidays going back.

Whilst most classes in the upper hunter don’t return until tomorrow the restrictions will still be in enforced.

The proposed Huntlee Suburb has fallen on the scrapheap.

The new estate which would have effectively created a new town in hunter the size of twenty thousand people will no longer be constructed.

The project was dropped after state planning minister Kristina Keneally said breaches planning laws in approving its go ahead.

The development was set to be challenged in court by residents opposed to its construction.

man driving at over 200 kilometres an hour [2NM News]

A man driving at over 200 kilometres an hour has been hit by a slew charges from police.

Hunter Valley police stopped the man just south of Greta on the new England highway .

Police have alleged the man was travelling at 210 kilometres per hour, and was detected to be over the alcohol limit, he was also found to be unlicensed and his car rego had expired.

He was taken to singleton police stations were he was also charged for drink driving, dangerous speeding, and having bald tyres.

He will appear at Singleton Local Court on Thursday 12 November.

The proposed third PowerStation for the upper hunter has come under fire from the Australian greens.

The new power station is set to be gas fired instead of coal however NSW greens MP Dr John Kaye said while gas-fired technologies can have about half the emissions of coal, three new power plants at Lithgow, the Upper Hunter and the Central Coast would still boost the state's emissions by an unacceptable 7 percent.
