In fact, if you dig deep enough you can find some killer selections dating back to the 1970s, so Canadian reggae certainly isn't new. This episode spans roughly 1977 – 1997. As a serious reggae fan who discovered Jamaican music 25 years after the fact, I am eternally grateful for labels like Blood and Fire, Pressure Sounds, Heartbeat, Soul Jazz and several others for restoring and rescuing so much crucial reggae music from vinyl oblivion. Blood and Fire definitely raised the stakes when it came to re-releasing reggae, and their mighty catalog remains the cornerstone of my reggae collection. Roy Cousins has never been a cult figure in reggae like Keith Hudson or Glen Brown, but he produced a lot of distinctive roots music in the 1970s as well as being lead singer of The Royals for many years. Sam Phillips was one of the true architects of modern music – rock and roll, absolutely, but Phillips recorded a lot of great artists for Sun Records, creating a huge legacy. Pat Kelly is one of the great voices in Jamaican music. I had always overlooked Kelly as a singer, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a set of choice discomixes when I dug deep enough into my collection. Some sweet sounds here, especially Pat's recut of his Techniques number "There Comes A Time" and the killer "Talk About Love" with Dillinger.
