We have many announcements to make for the month of November!

Football Watch Party November 7, noon – Penn State vs Northwestern

Join us at Bailey’s (2409 Laurens Rd, Greenville) to watch the Nittany Lions take on the Wildcats. Kick off is at noon.

Upstate State SC Chapter Autographed Football Raffle

We will be raffling an autographed Penn State football to support our scholarship fund.

Runner up prizes include a Bailey’s gift card and a Penn State Alumni Association tote bag.

The winning ticket will be picked during half time of the Michigan game on November 21.

Tickets will cost $5 each for members and $7 each for non-members and can be purchased during the football parties on November 7 and November 21. Payment can be accepted in cash or check.

Upstate SC PSAA Fall Fundraiser - Julie Valentine Center

We are seeking monetary or gift donations (see list below) to send as a group donation from our Chapter to support the Julie Valentine Center (a Greenville-based nonprofit organization that provides counseling and support services to children who have been victims of sexual abuse: http://www.julievalentinecenter.org)

We will be collecting donations at the football parties on November 7 and November 21. Please consider bringing any of the following:

1) Monetary donations in any amount.

2) Items to give to middle school boys at the completion of their group counseling programs, to include:

· socks

· gloves

· hats

· ties/bowties

· anything sports related

· balls

· hand-held games

· duffle bags

· toiletry products (deodorant, soap, shampoo, body spray (e.g., Axe)

Help Recruit Students to PSU!

Dave Chavira from the Admissions Office will be in Greenville on November 11 to talk to us about recruiting students to Penn State. If you are interested in volunteering and haven’t yet signed up, you can do so at https://admissions.psu.edu/recruitment/volunteers/.

Once there, click on the “Become an Alumni Volunteer” link and then submit the form located at “Sign up to become an Alumni Volunteer.”

Anyone interested in volunteering to speak to local high school students or attend local college recruitment fairs MUST submit an application to become a volunteer. Penn State will provide training and information materials before we meet with anyone.

Penn State vs South Carolina Baseball Game

Penn State will be playing South Carolina in Columbia on February 26, 27, and 28. Please let us know if you are interested in going. We will be working with the Columbia Chapter to get a group together to attend. More details in the near future.

Swamp Rabbits Game

Not only do we have a former Penn State hockey player, PJ Musico, playing for the Swamp Rabbits, head coach Brian Gratz is a Penn Stater as well!

Many of you have expressed interest in attending a game as a group. If we have at least 15 people going, we can arrange for group rate tickets and be seated as a group. Please let us know if you are interested so when can gage how much interest there is in a group outing.

Help Recruit Students to PSU!

At our most recent Chapter, many people expressed an interest in helping recruit local students to Penn State. Below are instructions for how individuals can do that. PSU said that they have done very little to recruit in South Carolina, so they were excited about our interest in helping.

The application can be found at https://admissions.psu.edu/recruitment/volunteers/

Once there, click on the “Become an Alumni Volunteer” link and then submit the form located at “Sign up to become an Alumni Volunteer.” (Note, the form didn’t go through the first 2 times I tried, but I tried again a couple hours later and it worked fine).

Penn State will contact individuals who are registered as volunteers to let them know of local opportunities. We are not permitted to engage in any recruiting activities without the involvement of PSU.

**In an effort to document and possibly coordinate the efforts of our Upstate SC PSAA members, I am asking that anyone who signs up as a volunteer please send me an email (amymilsom@gmail.com) and let me know you have registered, and also let me know if/when you are invited to help. We would like to document our collective involvement in the annual chapter report we submit to the alumni association, so we hope to keep track of everything we do related to recruitment.

The Upstate South Carolina Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association is holding our next Chapter meeting on August 1 at noon at Bailey’s Sports Grille, located at 2409 Laurens Rd, Greenville.

We are planning a more active year this year, and we need your input. Some of the activities planned include a community service activity and additional social activities, and of course the football watching parties will continue. If you have any ideas for activities, please send us an email or let us know at the meeting.

We are also planning to review and vote on several proposed Chapter bylaw revisions. Since our bylaws require that member s be given at least 30 days to review the revisions before voting on them, the revisions have been sent out in an email. Please email us at upstatescpsaa@gmail.com to be added to our email list.

Unfortunately, Erik has had to step down as Vice President, and we are looking for volunteers for the position. All officers must be alumni of Penn State and be members of the Penn State Alumni Association. We will vote on a replacement at the Chapter meeting.

The 2014 Penn State Football Season Is Here!

Another football season is upon us and the Upstate South Carolina Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association invites you to join us this and every football Saturday to commiserate with your fellow alumni and friends at Bailey's Sports Bar & Grille for Penn State Football!

This week the Nittany Lions take on Rutgers in Piscataway, NJ. Kick-off is 8:00PM

We'll also be holding a chapter meeting before an upcoming game at Baily's, the details of which are still being worked out. There will be more information to follow.

Julie Valentine Center Run2Overcome 2013

The Upstate South Carolina Chapter of the PSAA will again be participating in the Julie Valentine Center's Run2Overcome 5K benefit. The race is Saturday, August 3, 2013.

We are raising money to support the Julie Valentine Center's mission to stop sexual violence and child abuse and the impact of these crimes through prevention, collaboration, treatment, and advocacy. Your donation will help in their efforts to stop child abuse and sexual assault before it happens, reduce trauma and re-establish safety for victims and their families, and engage survivors in the healing process through compassionate, comprehensive treatment.

Participating in this event is a great way to earn exposure for our little group. Last year our Chapter stood out as Penn State Alumni often does.

Runners, REGISTER HERE for the 5 or 10K race. Be sure and join the Upstate SC Chapter team by selecting 'Penn State Alumni - Upstate SC Chapter' from the drop down menu and enter the password 'psu'.

Last year our race team was one of the TOP 5 fundraisers of the entire field, let's try and beat last year's total!

If you would rather not race, please support our team with a small donation or ask how you can help out on race day. Don't forget to ask your friends and family for support as well.

2013 Football Ticket Request

If you wish to purchase tickets to the Michigan game (homecoming) on October 12, 2013 please email [upstatescpsaa@gmail.com] your request by 4:00 PM Wednesday June 26, 2013.

2013 Football Ticket Lottery requests are now being accepted online. As in years past, a limited number of football tickets are offered for purchase to our affiliate groups through a "lottery" system.

The chapter has decided to make a request for tickets to this year's homecoming game versus Michigan on October 12, 2013. Tickets are $70.00. When making your request please also indicate a second and third choice for tickets.

This year the chapter will only be requesting the number of tickets actually requested by members. Please keep in mind if you request football tickets, you will be responsible for paying for them regardless of whether or not you use them.

We'll be holding a chapter meeting on Saturday June 1st at 1:00 PM at Earth Fare on Pelham Rd in Greenville.

Items on the meeting agenda will include paying the outstanding balance on our football ticket order from last season, possible chapter events for this summer, plus our community service event in the fall. As always chapter members and friends of Penn State are welcome to participate in the meeting.
