For years I’ve wondered the answer to this question.  Finally the question has been answered.

The answer to this question depends on the gun being used.  We will answer this question for three popular types of guns: hand guns, long range rifles, and shotguns.

Hand Guns:
Most hand guns like the 9mm will penetrate the water up to 7 feet. 

If you are deeper than 8 feet, you probably be safe from someone who is firing at you from outside of the water with a handgun.

Long Range Rifles:

Bullet travel much faster when fired from a high powered rifle than a handgun.  The interesting thing about this is, a long range rifle penetrates the water much less than a handgun.

Test has shown that a bullets shot from high powered rifles will only penetrate the water up to 3 feet.

If you are deeper than 3 feet, you probably be safe from someone who is firing at you from outside of the water with a long range rifle.

Shotgun:
Shotgun tests have shown to penetrate the water deeper than 6 feet.

Exact depth tests were not done, however researchers believe you will be safe from shotgun bullets if you are deeper than 8 feet.

Note:  If the bullet is shot from an angle, the penetration will be less.

ANSWER: YOU WILL BE SAFE FROM BULLETS IF YOU ARE DEEPER THAN 8 FEET!

On one of our recent trips to Asia for Ninjitsu training (more on that in later posts), we found ourselves meeting many foreigners who are living in Asia for $1,000 – $2,000 a month.

They are living life very well.  They are living near the beach, eating out most nights and enjoying nightlife like rock stars.

So I started asking the questions, “Can you really live on a tropical island in Asia and have our western comforts for $1,000 a month?  If so, how is this possible?”

“Is it possible to live like a rock star on a tropical island in Thailand for only $1,000 a month?”

It’s not only possible, but I’ve done it for over a year and I know many who have lived here for more than 10 years earning under $1,000 a month.

How is this possible?  First let me give you some background information on how I moved from America to Thailand making less than $900 a month.

It was 2008.  The American economy was in ruins, unemployment was skyrocketing, and my sales job was going down the toilet.  I was making 20% of what I was making the year before and things were getting worse.  I was working 60 hours a week making less and less each month.

I knew something had to change.  My only saving grace is I had a small internet website that sold sporting equipment which was making me about $800 in profits a month.

On one particular payday in 2008, I look down at my paycheck.  I made three dollars an hour for this pay period…

I had enough!

I quit my job.  I sold my car.  I moved all my belongings into storage. 

I bought a ticket to Thailand where I always dreamed of training in Muay Thai from the country where it all started.

I boarded a plane one month after I quit my job.  It’s been three years since then, and I’ve never looked back with regret.

Now I live in Thailand.  I stay in a nice apartment near the beach.  I go swimming in the warm ocean three times a week.  I get an hour massage on the beach for eight dollars.  I eat at 4 star restaurants whenever I want.  And I have my choice of beautiful women.   

I do all this for $1,500 a month.  (Most do it for less, I just happen to enjoy eating out more than most.)

My story is more dramatic than it has to be, however with enough planning, paradise can be yours.

How is this possible?  Actually, it’s quite easy. 

The 5 Steps to Living in Paradise:

1- Eliminate All Financial DrainsCar payment, mortgages, rent, and all other stupid bills need to go.  You need to create a freedom from contracts.  Move into a family member’s house for a month, or rent a room from Craigslist on a month by month basis.  Sell your car.  Even if it’s at a loss, still get rid of it.  If you need a car before you go, rent a car.  You can rent a nice car for 120 dollars a week anywhere in America.  A car payment back home will do you no good when you’re living in paradise.

2- Create a Targeted Monthly Income
How much do you need to make each month while living overseas?  A good round number is $1,000.  Add to the number whatever bills you can’t get rid of.  Like credit card payments, health insurance, etc…

3- Make Money From Your LaptopCreate what I call, “Laptop Money.”  It really isn’t that hard to make $1,000 a month from your laptop. 

Three Proven Money Making Ideas:
* Start a dropship business (read “The 4 Hour Work Week” for ideas and insights)

* Become a freelance writer.  If you have an “okay” grasp of the English language, you can make money writing articles and ebooks.  It’s ridiculously easy.  Start a provider account on Elance.com and start bidding on jobs.  You can easily make 500 – 1,000 dollars a month by working a couple hours a day.

* Teach yourself a skill.  I’m not a web designer, but I’ve made thousands of dollars building websites.  How do I do this?  With an easy website creator called Weebly (www.weebly.com).  With Weebly you can learn to create professional websites in under an hour.  Where do you find clients?  Start with: Elance.com, Vworker, Craigslist, and word of mouth.

For those of you who don’t mind working away from the computer, try teaching English.  You can become a certified English teacher in most Asian countries for $1,000 dollars and easily make between 800 – 1,500 dollars each month teaching English part time.

4- Get Ready To Go
* Buy Your Plane Ticket
You can get to most places in Asia for under $1,000.  A few good places to start your new life: Koh Samui Thailand, Bali, or one of the many islands in the Philippines.

* Find Your New Home
This is the scary part.  You can either find an apartment online before you go, or wing it.  Any apartment you find in Asia online will be over priced.  It is best to come to your destination first, rent a room in a hotel / hostel for one week, then apartment hunt by asking around.  You will easily find a place.

Or instead of renting a hotel for a week, join a surf camp or a scuba diving school for that week.  You will usually get free housing with the program and you’ll meet a lot of people willing to help in the search for your new home.

5- Learn to Enjoy Life Again
Strangely this is the toughest part, learning to enjoy life where you don’t need to show up every day to a job you hate.  Learn a new language, learn a martial art, start hiking, start partying at night, just do whatever you enjoy.

Is this simplified?  Yes, but that is how life is.  Some of the best things in life are simple to do…just a little scary at first.

Some of you may be thinking, that sounds great, but how can you really live on $1,000 a month in Asia?

Here’s break down of a normal monthly budget for 2010 in Thailand.  These are not unique.  Start looking at Asian travel forums and you’ll find very similar numbers:

$300 – 1 Bedroom Apartment with air conditioning (Includes internet)
$50 – Utilities (Water + Electric)
$100 – Transportation / Moped rental
$300 – Food Budget
$200 – Drinking and Partying Budget

Total: $950

For those of you with children, this will be more difficult and more expensive.  However, thousands of families have already done this with children and other attachments.

Can you live like a King in Asia on a tropical island for $1,000 a month?  Yes.

The idea of attaining a second passport legally has always been of interest.  The fact of the matter is, you just never know what might happen in the future. 

We’ve done the research and read the books on this topic.  Books like Emergency, written by Neil Strauss recommend spending 350,000usd to buy property in St. Kitts.  Other websites have a few tips and loopholes from other countries that you may want to consider.  We’ve combed through all the fluff to break down the most popular ways to attain a 2nd passport.

1- St. Kitts Passport
As described in the book, “Emergency”.  If you invest a minimum of 350,000usd in approved real estate in St. Kitts, you can receive citizenship in 6 months.  Note, you have to keep your “investment” for a minimum of 5 years to retain your citizenship.

2- Brazilian Passport
For those of you that are not afraid of a lifelong commitment, you can always have a child with a Brazilian woman.  This will give you a strong chance of applying and being accepted as a Brazilian citizen.

3- Israeli Passport
Ever feel the call of Judaism?  Move to Israel for 90 days, convert to Judaism, serve in their military, and you can attain citizenship from Israel.

4- Greek or Irish Passport
Have a parent or grandparent who are or were a citizen from either of these countries?  If so, you can apply for citizenship.

5- Panamanian Passport
Many Americas like to retire to Panama.  However, what if you want to become a citizen?  You will be waiting a minimum 5 years and will have to invest at least 100,000 in a Panama business.

The laws in the United States has made in increasing difficult to attain a 2nd passport, especially if tax evasion is a priority.  However, with enough commitment and money, you can attain that second passport.  Of course, you can go the illegal route and get a fake done just about anywhere.

(Note: We are only briefly touching on these options.  If you find one that interests you, independent research is always required.)

First thing you should know, the United States government tracks all money transfers and withdraws of 10,000 dollars or more.

Transferring a large amount of money overseas will not work if you want to do it under the radar.

So what can you do?

You can do what millionaires and billionaires have been doing for the last 100 years, but on a smaller scale.

How to Transfer Money Overseas Without the Government Knowing:
1- Buy an item that does not lose value over the short time you own it.  Look at gems, jewelry, art, rare coins, etc…

2- Transport it to the country of your choice.

3- Sell it at the destination country at a small loss.

4- You now have a large amount of cash at a country of your choice to do what you please with.

That is how you move large amounts of money overseas under the radar.  However, if you want to keep your money in the United States and just looking for asset protection from our sue happy country, talk to an accountant about Asset Protection through LLCs (Limited Liability Company) and corporations.

A brief run down to how Asset Protection works:
1- You open an LLC and transfer ownership what you want to protect into the LLC.  Everything you owned is now owned by an LLC

2- The LLC is owned by a holding company

3- The holding company is owned by a trust

4- You don’t technically own the trust, but you have control over it.

5- If you are sued for whatever reason, it is very difficult for them to touch what is owned by the LLC.

6- Your stuff is safe from our sue happy country.

You’ve seen it in the movies or maybe you have encountered it in real life.  You are stealthing onto an unknown territory.  Everything is going well until you hear the growl, the bark, and the next thing you know an attack dog is running straight for you ready to leap for your throat.

What do you do? 

The answer will depend on the situation.  With proper preparation, this situation will never come up.  However, we have five scenarios with different solutions for dealing with attack dogs:

Example 1: Disable the Dog’s Nose
Have some heavy duty pepper powder or crushed pepper leaves available.  Plant a portion of the powder along the dogs search perimeter.  Then when the dog comes up, he sniffs it and the pepper will disable the dogs ability to track scent for some time.

Then all you have to do is avoid the dog’s sight and stay silent when the dog is near.  Also, if things go wrong and you need to escape, have this powder available so you can plant it along your trail during escape.

Example 2: Drug the Dog
This may be a warning to the handler that something is up.  But if there is no way around the dog, disable it with a strong sedative

Plant some food with the sedative along the dog’s path.  Make it small enough that the dog can eat it in one bite without notifying the handler that it just ate an unknown subsistence.

Example 3: If the Dog Attacks
If the dog attacks you and there is no one else around, then it is one on one situation.

This is what you do:
1- Always stay on your feet.  Never let the dog take you to the ground.

2- Take off your jacket, shirt, or any other type of clothing and wrap it around your left forearm. (If you are left handed, wrap your right arm).

3- Feed your left arm to the dog’s mouth.  Don’t let the dog drag you to the ground.

4- As the dog’s mouth is closed on your arm, strike the dog in the eyes and nose. (Or use a knife and stab at the throat.)

5- If you don’t have a knife and if the strikes aren’t working.  With your free hand, wrap your fingers around the bottom half of the dogs jaw, and pull down as hard as possible to break the jaw. (This will work better with Dobermans that it will with Pitbulls who lock their jaw making this maneuver nearly impossible.

Example 4: Spy Type Scenario
If you are a spy and watching the area for a few days.  Then you have more options.  You watch the grounds and study the security.  You notice every evening they do a grounds sweep with the attack dogs to introduce each dog to the security staff for the evening.

The night of your infiltration, you enter the grounds disguised as one of the security officers.  As the handler and the dog do the rounds, they will have the dog smell each security officer to let the dogs know they are not a danger.

Once you are introduced to the dog and it moves on, you escape and prepare for the night.

(This tactic is not for the faint of heart.)

Example 5: Disable the Dog – Final Option
Not the most animal friendly tactic nor the best for stealthing and moving unseen.

However, in a military type situation and if it comes to life and death, make sure the dog goes down before you.  Shot for the head or neck if from a distance.  If the dog is running at you, just make sure you hit the dog and brace for the impact of the dog jumping at you.

Note: This should be a last resort, by disabling the dog in this manner, you will be giving away your location and making the rest of the security force aware of your presence. 

Here you have it, five different solutions for dealing with the problem of security dogs during your nightly missions.

Since our previous articles was published, How to Escape from Handcuffs in 15 Seconds we have received a lot of question regarding zip ties.

How can you break free from zip ties in 15 seconds?  Is it even possible?  If so, how is this done?

The answer is very simple, yes it can be done. 

The video below will explain how to break free from zip lines if you are restrained by them.  

Note:  If you want to practice this method at home, you’ll need two items:

1- Heavy Duty Zip Ties
Can be found at Home Depot or your local hardware store.  Get the strongest ones available.  It’s better to practice with the more difficult zip ties to better prepare you for the future.

2- Duct Tape
Wrap each wrist with duck tape before you practice.  This will save you from some very bruised wrists.

Now more than ever during night stealth exercises, you will come across security cameras and other surveillance equipment.  Follow these 5 quick tips and learn how to stealth by unseen.

Tip 1- Sneak Pass Security Cameras
Shine a light of 130 or more Lumens into the camera lens which will blind the lens.  Sneak by, then remove the light from the lens.

Tip 2 – Sneak Pass Security Cameras Part 2
Cover the lens with spray paint or shoot at the lens with a paintball gun.

Tip 3 – Motion Sensor
Every wonder how to get pass a motion sensor light?  Use patience.  You must move very slowly through the area covered.  When we say very slowly, we mean slowly.  No sudden movements.  It will take you nearly 10 minutes to pass through 10 meters of area covered by motion sensor lights.

Tip 4 – Barbed Wire Fence
Put thick material over the part of the fence you will climb over.  A car mat, piece of cardboard, or a thick jacket will do. Climb over, then remove the mat.  Store the mat in a safe place till you need to escape.

Tip 5 – Wired Fence
Cut through the fence with heavy duty wire cutters.  Then tie the broken fence with cord to give the appearance than it was not tampered with.

When being pursued by another vehicle, unless you are prepared, you have very few options.  When you are in a car chase there are only two outcomes that will occur:

1- Your car will be disabled and you will be caught

OR

2- You will escape

Without proper preparation, your chances of escaping will be minimal.  Maybe pursuers will get in an accident disabling their vehicle, or maybe your superior driving will loose them. 

However if two or more cars are chasing you, superior driving will be a lot less effective.

To increase your chances of success in a car chase, you must first prepare yourself and your vehicle.  Then you must take the right action during the chase:

How to Protect Your Car

1- Get Run Flat Tires on Your Car
This will protect your car from being disabled.  Even if you run over a spike strip, your car will still be able to drive at speeds of 55 mph or more.

2- Better Shocks
If you need to go off road, higher quality shocks will make the difference of getting through it or not

3- Upgrade your Bumper
Replace your cars current bumpers with dual ram bumpers. 

4- Heavy Duty Radiator
Replace your current radiator with a new heavy duty radiator which can keep up with the chase.

5- Bullet Proof Windows and Body
If you really want to protect yourself, replace the windows with bullet proof glass.  Add Kevlar and steel plates to the cars interior. If you do not have Kevlar on hand, use old phone books and pack them inside the doors. Most bullets will not penetrate a phone book.

The longer you are in the chase, the more likely you will be caught.  The first couple of minutes are the most vital.  Here is what you do:

1- Disable the Pursuing Vehicle Beforehand
If you know before hand that you are going to be pursued, disable their vehicle.  Slash their tires, do the classic potato in the exhaust, or anything you can think of.

2- Flatten Their Tires
Have a bag of “Caltrops” in you car that you can throw out the window.  Most cars do not have run flat tires.  So if you are able to flatten their tires early on, the chase will be finished quickly.

Throw the Caltrops right after a turn to help disguise them. (Caltrops are sharp items that when thrown, a point always lands up.  To flatten a tire, you will need to create your own.  Try hammering nails into a small block of wood from all different angles having the point of the nails stick out.)

3- Blind the Pursuing Vehicle
Have a handheld spot light in your car.  During a night time chase, you can blind the driver giving you an edge during the chase.  (If you can mount the light, even better)

4- Evasive Driving
If you haven’t already, learn evasive driving.

5- Find Cover
If you need to separate yourself from your car, do so in a busy area or parking garage.  Leave your car and blend in with the environment.

One note to consider: The longer you run, the more certain you are to get caught. There's a small window of time after a chase begins before backup arrives, before helicopters are deployed. If you want any chance of getting away, you'd best use this time to find someplace secluded and bail out.
