There’s really not much to say except the Godfather of Techno is back in Brooklyn for another special appearance, of course leading up to his appearance during the extended weekend of Detroit’s Movement festival. The legend that is Juan Atkins is back at Cameo Gallery, with support from TURRBOTAX resident and fellow Michigan native Contakt on the bill. Brooklyn is getting some serious midwest vibes tonight, and we at URB couldn’t be happier. Cameo is actually doing a ticket giveaway for this event, and it only takes a click or two to get entered into the drawing. Electric Daisy Carnival returns to New York City for two days beginning on Friday, May 17. Saturday has already sold out, with limited Friday tickets remaining. URB has handpicked the essential acts to catch at this dance music festival, in no particular order but alphabetical.

Art Department | Neongarden | Saturday, 4:00-6:00pm

 Toronto veterans Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White are Art Department. Over recent years, they have broke the mold in creating an upbeat live DJ/vocal performance that is taking sound systems by storm. Art Department perform regularly with the Crosstown Rebels crew and have also worked with Hot Creations. The stage is set and this duo promises to deliver a unique performance to techno and house fans at EDC New York.

Bloody Beetroots Live | Circuitgrounds | Saturday, 10:00-11:00pm

Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo aka The Bloody Beetroots is well known for his black venom mask and, more importantly, his memorable, sometimes emotive live performances that combine electro, techno and house music. In January, the Bloody Beetroots relaunched “Church of Noise,”  a fan-driven social network. The platform was created by the team who developed Lady Gaga’s Little Monsters and boasts a fully integrated experience featuring YouTube, Soundcloud, etc.

Calvin Harris | Kineticfield | Saturday, 7:30-8:30pm 

Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris boasts a signature sound, which has helped him to emerge as a  persistent favorite at clubs and festivals alike. He has produced chart-topping singles and productions for artists such as Rihanna, Mary J. Blige. A recent favorite is “Sweet Nothing” featuring Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine. Harris was recently handpicked as a weekly summer resident at BCM Mallorca,  which landed the number six slot in DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs poll.

Carl Cox & Loco Dice B2B | Neongarden | Saturday, 10:00-11:00pm

The undisputed king of techno, Carl Cox, has teamed up with Loco Dice for what will be a fine foray into hard metallic grooves, thick bass lines and driving percussion. Loco Dice is a 10-year veteran resident DJ at Tribehouse in his hometown Düsseldorf. Other than that, he is widely recognized for his appearances at venues around the world. He is also respected for his productions that, while may be of the four-to-the-floor sort, still manage to infuse hip-hop elements and basslines. Back-to-back sets are always a treat so be sure to catch this one.

Dash Berlin | Circuitgrounds | Saturday, 7:00-8:00pm

A crowd pleaser in all senses of the word, Dash Berlin weaves seamlessly through progressive trance, big room anthems and electro like nobody else’s business. He is equally known for his workmanship in the studio and has produced several big hits. Most recently, since Dash Berlin ft. Sarah Howells “Go it Alone” was uploaded on Youtube in April, the video has garnered more than 2 million views. Give it up for this high energy DJ.

La Roux | Circuitgrounds | Friday, 6:30-7:15pm

Fresh from an appearance at Coachella, La Roux continues to astound people with her electronic dance pop sound. After having won a Grammy award for her self-titled first album, La Roux is currently working on its sequel. In the meantime, EDC New York is a great place to hear a preview of her work, combined with the hits that we have grown to adore.

Maceo Plex | Neongarden | Friday, 4:00-5:30pm

An up-and-coming contender from Valencia, Spain, Maceo Plex  has a unique sound that is garnering a lot of worldwide attention. His sound can best be described as deep tech house and nu disco, yet his productions have the ability to leave an indelible impression, with lush sweeps and flourishes. Most recently, Maceo Plex has released the latest in the DJ Kicks compilation series.

Nervo | Circuitgrounds | Friday, 3:00-4:00pm

For an upbeat party flavor look no further than Nervo,which was the only female DJ act to make it onto the DJ Mag 2012 poll. Nervo are on fire as they continue to collaborate with the biggest names in dance music, including Afrojack  with “You’re Gonna Love Again.” After the release of their single “Hold On,” Nervo are finishing up a new album, which will be out in 2013 on Astralwerks.

Richie Hawtin | Neongarden | Friday, 9:00-11:00pm

Another act that needs no introduction, Richie Hawtin continues sticking to his guns as a minimal techno innovator. Not only does he push the limits of sound with technology, he also moves things forward as far as branding techno as a fun cultural movement. From his early Decks, EFX & 909 project straight up to CNTRL and then ENTER, expect zero compromises with only the finest musical experience from this man.

Sultan & Ned Shepard | Circuitgrounds |Saturday 1:00-2:00pm

This breakout act has been pretty consistent over recent years. Sultan & Ned Shepard are known for their productions and remixes, including for such artists as Nervo, Tegan & Sara and Bruno Mars. Sultan & Ned Shepard have all the elements in place to become big names in the business. Particularly, with upcoming DJ dates with David Guetta and the Size Matters label at events around the world, momentum is building as more and more people turn on to their sound.

Berlin-based producer Freddy Knop has a new record out this week via Circle Into Square, highlighted by the jazzy, textured ambience of “Raum.” The 7-track Polyphonies EP cycles through xylophone, Oberheim synth, glockenspiel and found sounds on its way through those white earbuds that are going to give you significant hearing loss by the time you’re 35. Swedish producer/deejay duo Create & Devastate present their single “Most Confident,” featuring west coast mic technicians Wildchild and MED, taken from their May 21st extended play project of the same title. The eight track release also includes Mykill Miers and boasts remixes from Swedish producers Freddie Cruger and Max I Million. Original and remix instrumental passes included. Perhaps as a response to the current crush of the EDM wave, underground dance music has taken up a defensive posture by putting retro-looking house music on the front lines. And while it’s impossible not to enjoy the beloved sound, Maceo Plex is ready to change things up. “For the last three years at least, the big trend has been early ’90s house,” he says. “Everything’s a throwback. I think it’s the right time to put out something that’s a little more deep and futuristic again.”

That futurism manifest itself on the American-born, Spanish-based DJ/producer’s entry into the seminal DJ-Kicks mix series, which is out now on K7. URB asked Maceo Plex to elaborate.

URB: What does it mean to you to be a part of DJ-Kicks, and to launch the premier edition for 2013?  
Maceo Plex: It’s a dream come true, plain and simple.  DJ- Kicks is one of the best mix series of all time, and it’s an honor to do one.   

What are some of your favorite or most inspiring past DJ Kicks mixes? 
There’s a nice handful that I personally really love. Some standouts are Andrea Parker, Carl Craig, Erlend Oye, Stacy Pullen, etc. Andrea’s is sick as hell!

When you created DJ Kicks, what were the essentials needed in your studio when making this? 
 Just dope records. I layered some Jomox beats over some of the tracks, and a bit of software production for the edits and remixes.  

You say, “Everything’s a throwback. I think it’s the right time to put out something that’s a little more deep and futuristic again.” What for you separates throwback from futuristic?  
Well to be honest, I don’t even think people understand what I mean by futuristic. To me futurism is not just thinking of the future of music, it’s more sci-fi than that.  I’m thinking of dark sounds like ETs, futuristic dystopian societies and stuff like that. I think people are loving that old school vibe in music, but are forgetting the imaginative sound design that the pioneers of electronic music were trying to capture. It seems lately everyone’s content with an old school sine wav organ type sound, instead of appreciating some more creative sounds. 

You used race car sounds, which you then edited. Why race car sounds, and what other unique sounds did you like using in this mix?  
The race car sounds are part of the track by Visnadi, but I also put weird tweaky sounds from my synths, as well as vocal snippets, background noise scapes and other tiny elements.  This brings new life to the mix, instead of just a simple little DJ mix. 

Which song on this mix means the most to you, and why?  
I would say, ‘Spatial Lobe,’ by Monsters from ID is one of the most beautiful electro records ever made. So it has always meant a lot to me. Also, my track with Mark Osullivan is a nice one.  

How would this have sounded different if this had mixed under your other alias, Maetrik?  
It would have been much darker, with a lot more weirdness and fewer house tracks. Probably darker electro and sinister techno tracks.  

What does the future hold for you? I will make more music in general. 
There will be more concentration on Ellum and Ellum showcase, and the return of Maetrik.

Back at it again.  With Hangout Fest going down this week, I’m sure that someone out in the Gulf Coast area just hasn’t gotten a chance to grab a pair of tickets yet…

After a well received tour and drop of her much anticipated album, Half Shadows, on Ultra Music, TOKiMONSTA has released some collaborative remix efforts of initial single The Force. 

The original version of The Force had many take notice of how effortlessly her beat skills were able to match up with and contain the energy of featured artist Kool Keith.  Continuing along that line, the remix package drops with remix efforts by legendary house producer Miguel Campbell, NY based producers, Nick Hook and Branchez, UK producer,  Star Slinger, and LA based A.Chai.  Each producer lends a different sound to the track, which makes for some interesting listening and playlist choices for fans of trap, EDM, house, and hip hop.

Earlier in the year, a small party consisting of three minds from different beats of the NYC underground was born; THREE-FOR-ALL is an amalgamation of the finest NYC scene-specific DJs coming together to bring the ruckus, usually for free and for FUN. Initially launched in January with a special Berlin-specific set from the legendary Machinedrum, the party took a hiatus…until now. It looks like THREE-FOR-ALL is back, with a massive lineup to boot. Filled with local talent from the likes of Hippos in Tanks producer maven Physical Therapy and TURRBOTAX’s DJ heroine Space Jam will open up the night for the likes of Houndstooth’s man-of-action, Throwing Snow, who is fresh off taking in the lessons learned during the first term of Red Bull Music Academy here in New York City. The legend that is John Digweed is prepping yet another mix of his live legacy with the forthcoming release of his newest CD/4xLP; Live In Slovenia. Simply put, Digweed recorded a tantalizing set in the city of Izola and is sharing with fanatics and newcomers worldwide. What’s interesting about the mix isn’t the volume of if all, but the actual balance that Digweed displays; pairing a lot of the tunes and artists you’d think he’d play (Booka Shade, The Chemical Brothers, Josh Wink, etc.) with producers who have just made their mark or even more so, on the up-and up (Boys Noize, Deetron, George FitzGerald). Surely worth an in-depth listen, Live In Slovenia is a journey that takes you through the mind of a mixing veteran who’s dipping his toes into unforeseen territory and opening the ears of eager fanatics who are willing to listen.
