Only after Paul has proclaimed the wonders of God’s grace in Election and Justification, does he now turn to Sanctification. Already hinted at, now he expounds the calling of the redeemed man to be a living sacrifice to God, a response of gratitude, being conformed to the mind of Christ his Savior. This is the work that God has predestined his adopted children to perform.
God is not looking for a people who are righteous so that he will have someone to love, since none will be found, whether from the Jews or the Gentiles. Therefore, he has sent the preached word, the Gospel to call sinners to repentance. The Jews will be made jealous as they see God granting righteousness to Gentles who did not seek it, fulfilling the prophesy that the Kingdom of God is greater than national Israel.

The slogan reveals the Biblical truth that sinners are saved not by any works, but by God’s mercy freely given to them, and received by them only by the instrument of faith.
Are Christians bound to obey the magistrate (government/state) absolutely? Should Christians identify God’s blessings and the church’s fortunes with a particular nation or political party? Listen to learn that ethnicity, national allegiance, and political affiliation do not trump Christ’s call to the believer to be loving, humble, and a peacemaker. Our citizenship is in heaven, and our allegiance is to God alone. This has serious ramifications for the life of the Christian so long as God leaves him in this world.
