Hi Ethan,
the same Effect happens when you reload a page with Fonts included and on :hover when the hover-style contains the font description.

Man, that’s weird. I used scale() on link hovers to some success on my site, but had to use display:inline-block to get it running, which was a little hacky. Worked with @font-face, though.

Well, they can’t all be systemic rounding errors, but that’s a good one to know. Especially since I’m diving into transitions now, and been fiddling with using @font-face more and more.

This will save me the pain of discovering it myself.

family guy, without fail. [questionable] morals + fun + evil chicken = hours of fun, perfect for being trapped in mass transit ! And then any album by Dancing Lotus for a feel-good vibe in the inevitably bored atmosphere…

As I looked around at the variety of human life, I’d give myself some emotional distance… a “4th wall” if you will.

Then I’d pop in “Planet Earth: Caves” (easily the finest of the bunch) and build a narrative around the bus occupants using a voice that slightly (and absurdly) resembles Sigourney Weaver.

All of these are in the iTunes podcast directory:

I second the This American Life recommendation

The CBC Radio 3 podcasts are excellent

Planet Money from NPR

KEXP’s Live Performances

The Bugle (if you don’t mind bursting into loud giggles among strangers)

Sound Opinions (if you don’t mind loudly disagreeing with them among strangers)

Enjoy!

The PBS documentary on New York is incredible. Long enough to last the whole trip and well worth the commitment. If you don’t take it on this trip you must add it to your Netflix queue.

So, wait, you (or me, in this case) are going to be spending hours on end in a confined area, going to a far away place, traveling with people you don’t even know?

My favorite thing for traveling is This American Life, but be warned, you may find yourself bursting into tears amongst strangers. But I think that’s kind of the point.

Also, Errol Morris’ In First Person TV series, basically a bunch of 1 hour documentaries on the most bizarre and fascinating people imaginable.

I agree with jon. I thought the contest was to write a haiku, not haiku strung together like an epic poem.

I, along with others, assumed it was one entry per person. You did say “write a haiku” not “write haikus”. just sayin’ there are a bunch of people that just haiku bombed this contest. I think it would be unfair to choose one of their entries.

Sorry, now what were you saying?

Oh ya, on the point of “FREE” stuff, I encourage you to grab Chris Anderson’s audio book from Audible (it’s free, btw) titled: “FREE: The Future of a Radical Price”. It’s a great read (listen).

And yes — my attention span is so short they I have to jack audio into my ears to leave my eyes free to consume what they will at the same time.

It should work basically the same way, Klaus just set the
width
of the
object
element the same way you would an
img
, and you should be set.

Of course, the JavaScript won’t be required, since the movie should resize smoothly.

Curious how you can make this work with flash—trying to do the same scale effect?

tried the object tag but i didn’t get it right :(

That’s really interesting, Michel. I’m not sure how well it’d help images that have quite a bit of detail (e.g., text) in them, though—have you looked at the detail loss in files like that?

About the image interpolation problem, I may have a nicer trick than a script.

When redesigning my website in 2005 I made one of these image and found that if your original image is a little more than the double in dimentions of the final rendering, it’ll scale well both on Windows and Mac OS X.

To compensate the increase in file size I just blur the double-sized image a little and apply stronger JPEG compression. This results in a lower quality double-sized image, but once scaled down it’s quite fine.

I wrote about it back then. The most inconvenient drawback is that it’s more work per image.

I’ve used Homesite since it was freeware you could download from the lone developer’s website. I feel lost in any other editor and I don’t even use that many of its bells and whistles.

Congrats!!! Dan’s first book is so approachable but thorough I found it works great for my students, and is the only book I absolutely require for my classes. (I have a long list of “nice to haves” for them, but I know his they will come back to again and again for help.) I’ll definitely be adding this to the list for the more intermediate students!

After seeing the flurry of comments I’ve been re-inspired to fix up the code in my example here:

http://www.stainlessvision.com/lab/fluid-images/pngfix.html

So to re-iterate, this wraps the image in a span, makes the image invisible and sets the AlphaLoader on the span.

I’m noticing some pixelated artefacts when scrolling, anyone else?

I like the check Olly included in his code to see if the image has already been smoothed, this would allow someone to re-run the script if the page was updated dynamically with new images (a slideshow for example)… not something I’ve added here yet though.

I see your point, Aaron. But I’d argue this isn’t an entirely new practice: we already provide “oversized” elements for other aspects of our design. I’m thinking specifically of background images, which we’ll often make significantly larger when we can’t predict the dimensions of an element, or when we want to accommodate the user’s font resizing. Fluid images and fluid grids are, I believe, the next logical step in bulletproofing our designs, and offer the same usability benefits to the user.

Love the idea (and the implementation) but I think there should be some kind of certification process developers need to pass before they’re cleared to load interface elements (imgs) at twice the default proportions and three times the filesize. I’ve always avoided the idea altogether out of concern for bandwidth. Does that make me some kind of… well, you know.

Well, grab a monkey’s bajongle and call me Sally. That’s a great script. Nicely done.

Could it be true? My images won’t look out of place every time I change the width of my site’s layout?! Praise jeebus!

Right, I’ve had a go at fixing the right-click-save problem with my own jquerificated version of the script. It clones the image, makes it invisible and bungs it in front of the smoothly-scaled version.

I’d appreciate any feedback, comments, improvements, rewrites, blatant flames and giant piles of money anyone has to offer :)
