Hey David — you’re right, that section’s misleading, and should be fixed. I’ll add a note to the errata, and ask about patching that up. Thanks!

Re: setting padding as a percentage. On page 35 you say that this is a percentage of the elements width. However, according to the current css 2.1 spec, setting either margin or padding refers to containing element’s width. This is the case in practice for both ie9 and firfox 4, though I haven’t checked earlier browsers.

I was up til 4.10am last night, worked through it from beginning to end in one session – it’s very rare for a non-fiction book to have that effect on me.

Two things really stand out for me:

The paradigm shift from designing for desktop then thinking “now how the hell do I get this to look good on 100s of different bloody mobiles”, to designing for everything in parallel right from the outset.

The immense (some would say immensely sad) satisfaction I get from using percentages with 14 decimal places in my layouts :-)

Thanks, Rick. Sorry you’re having some problems with the iPad. There’s some zooming bug triggered when switching from portrait to landscape that disables pinch-zooming; I’m still looking into it, but in the interim you can double-tap to reset the zoom.

I’m still working on smoothing out a few things on the iPad, but in the meantime I hope that helps!

I have just finished the first chapter of your book. I followed the link to your robot or not page. (I love robots too, especially red ones.)

When I changed the orientation of my iPad to check it out (from portrait tit landscape), it broke… Did switch orientation but did not scale… And then froze… I’d really like this to work but it dunt * just tried again to be sure to be sure *

I’ve been so excited about getting this book I hardly slept… I kept checking abookapart.com over and over last night, hitting refresh again and again looking for the darn “add to cart” option! LOL If it had been in a store, I probably would have set up camp outside…. but at last I have it now! Got the book + ebook combo (have all of the books in the series).
Your ideas for RWD are truly a change in philosophy and technique for webdesign… absolutely brilliant!
Thank you!

First of all congratulations to Liz Fulghum. Definitely the unassailable winner. The other were strong competitors.

Enjoy on 21 June. I expected that it will be very interesting. Pity that I can’t be there (other obligations), but I would have loved to go.

the same Effect happens when you reload a page with Fonts included and on :hover when the hover-style contains the font description.

Man, that’s weird. I used scale() on link hovers to some success on my site, but had to use display:inline-block to get it running, which was a little hacky. Worked with @font-face, though.

Well, they can’t all be systemic rounding errors, but that’s a good one to know. Especially since I’m diving into transitions now, and been fiddling with using @font-face more and more.

This will save me the pain of discovering it myself.

As I looked around at the variety of human life, I’d give myself some emotional distance… a “4th wall” if you will.

Then I’d pop in “Planet Earth: Caves” (easily the finest of the bunch) and build a narrative around the bus occupants using a voice that slightly (and absurdly) resembles Sigourney Weaver.

All of these are in the iTunes podcast directory:

I second the This American Life recommendation

The CBC Radio 3 podcasts are excellent

Planet Money from NPR

KEXP’s Live Performances

The Bugle (if you don’t mind bursting into loud giggles among strangers)

Sound Opinions (if you don’t mind loudly disagreeing with them among strangers)

Enjoy!

The PBS documentary on New York is incredible. Long enough to last the whole trip and well worth the commitment. If you don’t take it on this trip you must add it to your Netflix queue.

Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos” series.

So, wait, you (or me, in this case) are going to be spending hours on end in a confined area, going to a far away place, traveling with people you don’t even know?

My favorite thing for traveling is This American Life, but be warned, you may find yourself bursting into tears amongst strangers. But I think that’s kind of the point.

Also, Errol Morris’ In First Person TV series, basically a bunch of 1 hour documentaries on the most bizarre and fascinating people imaginable.
