Called VW, opened a case (DBP MkV, Owner: Troy Cox)

Called VW today to talk about some sort of compensation for all the troubles with this car. I spoke to a very nice and understand guy (Jeff). He said he had to forward my issue to a region rep. who would be getting ahold of me tomorrow. I'm hoping that they will, at the very least, take care of a payment for me. What I would really prefer (in addition to a covered payment) is for them to re-instate the CPO warranty that the car had before being sold to the Mazda dealership. With all the problems that I've had, it would at least give me peace of mind for another 2 years once this warranty is up. This option would make a customer happy, and if everything is finally fixed, cost them no money to do so. I have never had to do this before so I am not sure what to expect. I really hope that they can do something for me because at this point I really really regret buying this car. This is the first VW I have ever owned and at this point probably my last. Unless they can get something figured out with it. We shall see what tomorrow brings.

Got the car back, they gave up... (DBP MkV, Owner: Troy Cox)

After 15 days and several calls to the VW tech line, which lead to the "head VW radio guy", they called to say that they can't figure it out. Because the radio issue happens so randomly they are unable to duplicate the issue. I took a video of the issue just so they could see what was happening. They sent the video to the tech line. Of course they "had never seen this before". They forwarded the problem on to the radio guy and he suggested it was a voltage issue. They checked all the grounds and the battery. No problems. They were advised to give the car back to me. If it happens again (which it will) then they will send a regional tech out to trouble shoot the issue.
I. cannot. believe this.

Better news for the sun roof. Though they also don't know what caused that to fail, they were able to fix it! Had to order some new parts.

Just a few issues after getting the car back though. I found 2 screws just rolling around in the hatch area. They had apperantly not been put back from whence they came. Also, when I picked up the car I noticed that the rims were very dirty (black and rust colored grease all over them) When I was able to clean them off I noticed that the rims are now all fucked up in a very uniform manner. Gonna have to talk to Dan about both of these issues.

Thinking about trading it in...already, Back to the shop (DBP MkV, Owner: Troy Cox)

I recently took a trip to Chicago. This got me quite a bit more time in the R than my usual dailey commute. I noticed a few things that (of course) have gone wrong. Back to the shop! Issues being looked at:
1) Sat radio issue still not fixed
2) Orange ring around the aux power outlet doesn't light up like it's supposed to.
3) The sound of air getting through the moon roof at highway speeds.
Dropped it off today. Dan said that they aren't going to give it back until everything is fixed this time! They gave me the CW Golf again as a loaner. Better than nothing I suppose.

I got a call from Maple Hill yesterday to let me know that my sensor had come in. This morning when I got out of work I stopped by Sweetwater's Donut Mill and picked up a dozen donuts for the guys at the dealership. Just to be nice. I went in to see what could be done today without an appointment. Dan was able to get me in! Daylight sensor fixed. As for right now, everything is in proper working order!

Things I've picked up along the way.
1) I was able to find an R32 owners manual on ebay. Cost me $50 but I'm happy now.
2) I got a Gorilla Gear mat(for the hatch area) on the Forum for $40. It's like new! Great deal.
3) I found the storage blocks that affix to the Gorilla Gear mat on ebay for $14. Again, a great deal!
4) I was also able to locate (thanks to ebay once again) the original .:R32 license plate for the front plate holder. $20. Hopefully this won't be on there long. I hope to replace the front grill with a hole-less one some time in the near future. They are costly though so we shall see how long it actually takes me.

Next, I need to go back to Maple Hill and talk to Denny Grubbs about purchasing an extended warranty for the R. My factory warranty is up at the end of March, the 26th I think. As much as I've had this thing in the shop already I think it will probably pay for itself in no time!

Still looking for an R32 owners manual. I contacted VWoA and talked to a wonderful woman who was very helpfull. She said she thinks that they have an owners manual there and that she can send it to me free of charge. She has to verify that though. Gonna call me tomorrow and let me know.

Nav DVD issues (DBP MkV, Owner: Troy Cox)

Ok, so I've been in contact with the dealership about the nav dvd that they were supposed to be sending me. It's been 1 day shy of a month since I've purchased the car...no nav dvd. The sales manager (Ron) that I've been talking to has just been giving me the run around. Saying that they are sold out and that he will get me one as soon as they are available. I went to my local VW dealership, Maple Hill VW, and asked if I could order one. Of course they are available and there is even a $25 rebate if you purchase before sept. 30th. I'm NOT happy when I find this out. Which brings us to today. I received a call from Oaklawn, they need a copy of my insurance so they can get my car registered with the state of Michigan. So I took the time to make a copy of it at the top of the page, in the middle of the page I included thier written contract stating that they would provide me with a nav dvd. Under that I wrote "It has been 30 days. Why do I NOT have this?! If you are unable to provide one as per our agreement, please send a check for $200 to me so that I may purchase one from my local VW dealer. Thanks for your PROMPT attention to this matter." Then I faxed it to them. An hour later the GM called me to assure me that this is NOT how they do business. He told me to order the nav dvd from my dealer and fax him the bill so he can cut me a check for the amount. I'm going Monday to get this done. I just want this to be over with.

2) Rattle from passenger side engine bay on start up.

Got another loaner, this time it's a 2010 Jetta Limited Edition in White Gold Metallic. Nice little car!

New Radio- Got the car back,Fixed? (DBP MkV, Owner: Troy Cox)

Got the .:R back today. Out come to issues:
1) Radio was faulty. I new radio nav head unit was installed. Well, atleast I don't have to be bothered by the scratches on the old one anymore.
2) Rattle at start up is "undetectable". They say they either "can't hear it" or "they don't hear anything uncommon" and are "unable to recreate." I don't understand this. It is VERY easy to hear as it happens every time the car is started after cooling down completely. EVERY TIME. So, I guess I'll just have to keep going back until some one does here it.

I'm starting to understand why the previous owner only owned this car for 11 months.
Atleast the people at the dealership are very very nice! That makes this so much easier to deal with!

Got the car back today. Issues addressed
1) Sat radio problem- Replaced Satellite Receiver Module. Fixed?
2) Wind noise from moon roof at highway speeds- Adjusted moon roof. Fixed.
3) Orange ring around aux power outlet not lighting up. Tech says it isn't supposed to light up.
Lies! I will be going back after Christmas to GET THIS FIXED! I'd really love to say that this will be the last thing that will need to be fixed before the car is finally tip top. But I'm sure by now you are feeling pretty negative about such a bold statement aswell.

Dropped it off at Maple Hill again. Issues being looked at today:
1) Sat radio problem...issue NOT fixed!
2) Sun roof broke in the open position on 1-2-12.
I took the car in on the 2nd to have them close the sun roof. They told me not to mess with it until they were able to look at it on the 5th when I already had an appointment for the radio again.

They were able to give me the Jetta as a loaner again. Honestly, my friends don't even believe that I own an R32 at this point. Every time I see them I am driving a loaner.

Happened a bit late as I was waiting to get to Huntsville VW, so it was about 50,700 miles. It ended up costing $224.00 or so, but I had it done. I will grab the invoice asap and update this post. Great dealership, and great service. They also had a white R32 there, a low 2000 MKV. They had one there last time too, not sure if it was the same one, it can't be. Tiguan is at around 45,600 miles or so. Tchuess.....

HPA Hockey Puck Installed (DBP MkV, Owner: Dave Stafford)

Got my HPA Hockey Puck installed today -- you can really feel the difference! Remarkable. Slight increase in vibration at idle, otherwise no detrimental effects. All good.

Install by the local tuner took 45 minutes and $59 took care of that. As reported elsewhere, the most difficult part was to get the old mount out of there.

Another upside of the HPA dog bone mount discovered after 10 days of use; My wife says she "likes" the added vibration. She wants me to drive us in my car more often. Bet HPA didn't know they could market these hockey pucks as a marital aid...

.:Ramona's Intro. (DBP MkV, Owner: Ted Wambach)

Just a quick recap over the last two months. Bought her with 27k, with FK's, Magnaflow Sport, and shaved body panels. The intended goal was to put her on a diet, and track the living hell out of her. I wanted to get a solid feel of how an .:R32 performed out of the box, so I spent the next month and a half selling off/swapping parts until I got the car where I want her to be. Only downfall is now I have a black hatch, but the rest is alive and well. What I can say is that the stock suspension blows any mediocre "go low" suspension on the market out of the water. Hell, even most "performance" budget suspensions. Either way, two months and 5k, there are nothing but good times from .:Ramona, and I'm surprisingly falling in love with the DSG. Lightweight wheels and some other stock class goodness will be making it's way over the winter months.

Wheel Trade (DBP MkV, Owner: Ted Wambach)

While I don't mind the factory .:R32 wheels, I've always had a soft spot for the 18x8 Vision's VW makes. To be honest, it's probably my favorite OEM wheel. I hate them in 17x7's, but for some reason the 18x8's really pop. I managed to find a trade from a Craigslist ad, but that turned into a 9 hour fiasco in the middle of nowhere, PA. After almost walking away from the deal 3 times, I ended up swapping my existing tires to the Vision's and drove away as fast as I could. They need a little bit of cleaning, but will be taken care of after the winter driving.

We are back in Huntsville Al, for 3-4 months. Drove down in the Tiguan with a 5x8 trailer and the R32. Made my appointment at the Huntsville VW dealership for my 50k oil change. Car is great, was cool to watch the wife driving it, looks awesome! Tchuess.....

50,000 miles!!! (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Happened on the way to work on Nightstalker Way just along destiny windsock area. This is a great car, best 50k miles ever on a car! No issues, fun, value, etc. So in 39 months of ownership, that equals about 1,280 miles a month! I have been driving it alot lately to work, about 55 miles a day round trip to KHOP and back from Big Sky Drive in Clarksville.

Back to the shop (DBP MkV, Owner: Troy Cox)

Dropped the R off today. This was the soonest they had a loaner available. It was a 2011 Golf in Candy White. Better than nothing I suppose. Issues that I'm having looked at or fixed today:
1) Reattach sound dampener. Replaced with new part.
2) Re-alignment. Fixed.
3) Radio won't recognize Sat radio some times. I have to turn the car off and remove the key. On restart it recognizes it but all the preset channels are gone. Updated software from 47 to 50 per a bulletin. Fixed? I guess.
4) The "auto" function for the headlights doesn't work. The lights are just on all the time when set to auto. Daylight sensor is not working. Part ordered.
5) I noticed that the Plastic on the outside of the passanger door that the mirror connects to is improperly installed. It was taken apart and re-installed. Fits properly now.

At home, later that day I put the car up on some ramps and looked around. I discovered the Tin type rattle in the exhaust was due to a loose heat shield in between the exhaust outlets. It only required me bending it down farther for a tighter fit. Rattle while accelerating-gone. I still have the rattle while moving at 1-2 mph though. I will keep pestering them until they hear it.

So, I've noticed a few things that don't seem right about the car. I am leary to bring it to the dealer and bother them with my inquiries as I have never owned a VW before. I understand that they can be "quirky". But I have a warranty still so wtf? Issues I have reported:
1)Tin like rattling sound from exhaust under hard excelleration from a stop. They have assured me that this is how a stock R32 exhaust sounds. I don't beleave them. I test drove 4 others before I purchased this. Non of them sounded like this.
2)the DSG seems to lag a bit when I start moving from a stop. They test drove it and once again assured me this is how it works. They even let me test drive a new GTI with DSG. I had to agree with them this time.
3) When I am backing up (sometimes) I hear a clunk come from the right front of the car. They were unable to duplicate the sound at this time. Lame.
4) Auto up function on the windows does not work on the drivers side controls. New part ordered.
5) Ipod doc doesn't seem to be working. A common problem with these cars. New part ordered.

All these tinny little problems and the car only has 21k on it. This is not a good sign.

Alignment done today, 27 Oct 11 (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Took off my OZ rims and summer tires and put on my stock rims with winter tires to narrow down the vibration. The car is smoother with the winter tires on, and the alignment this morning seemed to help a bit more. The alignment was $76.00 or so at the Firestone on Ft. Campbell. I will run my winters till spring and then get some fresh summers put on my OZ rims. Put the winter tires on with 48,500 miles. Tchuess.....

Ordered Nav DVD (DBP MkV, Owner: Troy Cox)

Went in to Maple Hill and ordered the Nav DVD (7B). $210.94! Thank god I'm not paying for it. Truth be told, I'll probably never even use it. I just want it because it's what I was promised and it makes the car that much closer to being complete. Faxed the bill to the GM. He called me an hour later and said the check was on the way. Stand up kinda guy!
Fast forward to the 21st, got the check in the mail! Cha ching. Oh, and just incase your wondering, yes I did send in for the $25 rebate. So I made a $25 profit off the transaction. I figured Oaklawn owed it to me for the month long inconvinece.

More issues
1)Back for the clunk in the front when turning. This time they found it. Bad strut bearing in the front. They replaced both sides. Noise is gone.
2)While idling in drive thru's I noticed that the car has a rattle comming from underneath the car. Very noticable! They are unable to duplicate. Lame.
3)Right HID light went out. They replaced it. Thank god it's covered under warranty $160 for a light!!
4) I noticed a heat shield/sound dampener on the fire wall was not attatched and was just leaning on the back of the engine. They "fixed" it by using double sided tape.

I picked up the car and made it about a mile away when I noticed the alignment was now off. Quick turn around-back to the dealership. My service writer, Dan, said that it would be taken care of if I wanted to drop the car off on Monday. So, I left. Once getting home I decided to check on the sound dampener, sure enough it was resting on the engine just as it was before (the tape didn't hold). I called Dan back to let him know. He said he wanted to get both of these issues taken care of properly. So I set up an appointment to drop off the R on Friday the 17th so they could give me a loaner so as not to inconvience me any further.

Purchasing begins (DBP MkV, Owner: Troy Cox)

Today I went to the dealership to purchase the .:R monster mats. $104.94 This car was missing some things when I purchased it. Such as; Floor mats, Nav DVD, a Screw driver in the trunk kit, .:R32 front license plate and an Owners manual. I have to find and pay for all of this out of pocket with the exception of the Nav DVD. The dealership that I purchased the car from said they would send me one. I also purchased some touch up paint today...just in case.

Got one! (DBP MkV, Owner: Troy Cox)

Today I ventured to Chicago to pick out an .:R. There were 6 in the Chicago land area to choose from. I looked at a DBP at Oaklawn Mazda first. It was super nice and the windows were already tinted. I then went to a couple other dealerships to check out some Tornado Red ones. I fell in love with the TR. Unfortunately both of them had paint issues that I wasn't about to deal with. So I went back to Oaklawn and worked out a deal with them and drover her 2 1/2 hours back to Kalamazoo. This car is amazing! But missing some stuff that I am gonna have to track down. LAME.

What I purchased and what I know about this car: I purchased R#920. It is Deep Blue Pearl and is just about flawless, visually speaking. 2 small dings above the passenger side rear wheel. Gonna get that fixed! It has Factory nav (the only option) I am now the 3rd owner of this car. The first owner registered it as a fleet vehicle. I believe this was the owner of the original dealership that just kept the car. The second owner was also located in Texas and kept the car for 11 months and then traded it in. Not sure why. The car was then Certified Pre Owned by that dealership and then they sent it to auction. That's were Oaklawn found it and had it brought up to Chicago. Being that they are not a VW dealership it lost the CPO warranty (LAME!!!!) It was on thier lot from March until I bought it. They were more than willing to make a deal to get rid of it. It's just a tuff car to sell to a non enthusiest for the price. The car came with dark tint having been a Texas car. It has never seen a winter! But soon will see the harsh Michigan winters.

If your reading this it probably means that I don't own this car anymore AND that your are smart enough to do some research! I take meticulous car of my cars! Pay attention to what follows as I will do my best to report what has been done to the car and why. Also, just assume that the car is being waxed every week when it's warm enough to do so.

Owners manual saga continues (DBP MkV, Owner: Troy Cox)

The lady from VWoA just called. They don't have an R32 manual instock that she can send me but they do have a GTI manual. She explained that the GTI manual is the same with the exception of the metal logo on the cover (says GTI instead of .:R32) and it won't have the R32 11page supplement in it. I need the info to work the car though, so I said send it. I am not the kind of person who will be ok with not having the correct manual though. So this will have to do until I can locate an original R32 manual. I feel as though I will be a life long customer based on their customer service alone! Stay tuned to find out if that remains true.

Ok, so I've been looking for this damned screwdriver for a week now. No luck. I really didn't wanna pay the dealerships price. $21.78 is quite a bit for a screwdriver that I'll likely never use. So I'm at the dealership ordering this damned screwdriver...

While I'm there I inquire as to the availability of an owners manual. The guy behind the counter laughs and says "Son, if you don't have one you ain't getting one. Not from us anyway." So I have been looking on ebay and on VWVortex (to be known as "the forums" from here on out) and I just can't seem to find one. The hunt will continue!

New/Used Rim on the R32.... (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

I just got my temporary new/used OZ rim on and it feels alot better then the slightly bent one. It is a Superleggera, not an Ultraleggera, but the color and wheel are very similar to each other. I am going to send out my slightly bent one to Dayton Ohio and have it professionally straightened. When it gets back I will have some tires put on it and the others and be set for next summer. I spent $180.00 for the Superleggera shipped, and $16.00 to get the tire removed and put on the new/used rim. Not bad, and then I will have a full size spare in the garage! Tchuess.....

I went thru 47K miles on Sunday while out shopping with my wife. I missed the pic by 3 miles while enroute to the car wash on Wilma Rudolph in Clarksville. Waiting on a replacement used rim I bought to arrive tomorrow. It was $180.00 shipped for a superleggera in silver. Only thing I could find for now, vibrations are not bad, just would like my smooth R32 back! EBC redstuffs are just so nice! Incredible braking, no noise, just brake dust. Tried a short cut monday afternoon just outside of gate 7 at Ft. Campbell but it did not work. It turned into a gravel road, but man was it fun at 60mph+! Any hoo, ran it thru the carwash this afternoon, and she is looking good again. Tchuess.....

On my way to Ft. Campbell last week for work, I turned 46k miles on the R32! Glad I caught the picture as it has been a while. Car is fantastic, just got back from a camping weekend at Indy for the MotoGP!! We did around 20-30 donuts in the lot 3G camping ground. Everyone was impressed with the R32 that was camping around us. Still in search of a new/used OZ Ultraleggera as I bent one recently. Any hoo, the car is great, adding miles rapidly but that is what I bought it for! Tchuess.....

New pads all the way around.... (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

So last week I get a brake pad light indication on the dash board. I knew the fronts were good, but thought the rears set it off as they were still stock. I figured I might as well change them all and they will be good for a while. So I went to ECS tuning and shopped for some pads. I went with EBC reds on the front ($105.13) and MIntex Red Box on the rear ($36.58), with shipping was $152.72. They got here in 3 days or so, and today I went to put them on at the auto craft shop on Ft. Campbell. I figured I would do the fronts first as I had never done the rears. The fronts went well, although I was 3rd on the list for a lift so did them with a floor jack! I get to the left front and the wear pad indicator cable is broken on the car part, not the pad part. So I will be taking it in to the VW shop to order the cable as my check pads indicator is always on. The rears went pretty good too, and the pads were about shot! It took me 3 hours, and cost $15.00 total for the bay! I guess it is $5.00 an hour for the bays. The pads seem great, about to read up on the break in process and do it tomorrow as I am smoked! Mileage is 44,610 when I put them on. One of my rims is definately out of round, I think it was from donuts last winter in Canandaigua NY, where I also lost my spare hidden key when I hit a huge pothole under the snow. Sucks, but what you gonna do. Tchuess.....

Ft. Campbell KY (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

I have been up here in Clarksville TN for about 1 month or so and have seen a few MKV R32s in the area! Talked with a couple of guys in DBP like mine and I believe I saw a candy white coming in gate 7 a couple weeks back. We have been to Land between the Lakes a couple times, had a bit of fun in the twisties. Mileage is just north of 43k and climbing! I drive a good 60 miles a day from Clarksville to Hangar 10 on the airfield at Ft. Campbell. The tiguan pulled the uhaul trailer down pretty good from upstate NY. We got around 15mpg but it was loaded! 2 sets of snow tires, the Ducati, a generator, tools, and a good amount of other stuff. Tchuess.....

Window Tint.... (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Well, being down here in Alabama, and just up to TN next month, I had to get the windows tinted. I went with the top of the line tint, FormulaOne from LLumar, and I believe it was the Premiere tint. It was $321.00 for the all the windows and a strip across the windshield. I went with legal 35% for the driver and pax windows, then 20% for the rest and the strip. The drivers side is not the best, and I think I will have to have them redo it unless it drys up nicely. Seems like a good shop, 1-day autorestyling, in Huntsville Al. I am driving up to Ft. Campbell tomorrow, and will have alot more feedback then. The drive home seemed to show that the A/C was working a bit less. It has some good qualities and works fien with GPS and other in-car systems that the metalic tints interfere with. Any hoo, I have been studying my ass off for my M-model transition and I am smoked. Tchuess.....

Also got a new tag for my car. In honor of our annual R32 group trip to TOD, "Wookies in the Woods", I changed from "BLAU R32" to "CHWBAKA"

I'm spending summer 2011 (winter in AU) in Australia. My R is lonely at home. I am constantly reminded of my car as I see R32s daily here.

Purchased 7 years ago, now has ~91,000 miles. APR tuned, Neuspeed CAI, Xbrace, full skid plate, Bilstein PSS9s OZ Allegeria HLT wheels, Michelin Alpine Supersports, Haldex race controller, Cat Eye HIDs . The only problem I have had has been a very intermittent start problem that may have been fixed by replacing the crankshaft sensor, The day after I had this done, it failed to start, took it back to the dealer, they played with it for a week, couldn't find anything. It has been fine since (~4 weeks now)

Mechatronic Recall Complete... (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

I have had my R32 back for a few days now, and what a difference! It was starting to buck/not engage well, and now it leaves off from the line in nice fashion. I had the DSG filter changed at the same time to save some money on the 40k DSG service. I also had the oil change of course and my front rims balanced. One of them is a bit warped, I think it may be from when I had my front left lug nuts loosen up at Lime Rock 2 years ago. So the service was still a bit pricey at $268.00, they charged me $26.00 for the DSG filter and $100.00 for one hour of labor to get to it. I did saved the money for the DSG fluid though, so not a bad deal. I am still loving this car, and have decided to probably pass on the new R and drive my R32 for quite a while longer! She currently sits in Huntsville AL, 40,082 miles, and shifting super smoother. Tchuess.....

Stopped by the Huntsville Alabama VW dealership and scheduled my mechatronic recall and 40K service! The part got in quick and I drop it off monday, they need it for 2 days. I am getting a rental and the manager is going to only charge me for the filter replacement and a bit of labor to sign off my DSG 40k service! He was really cool and seems like a nice guy. The DSG is getting a bit more clunky lately so I can't wait to see the difference! Mileage is right at 39,945 or so, just about perfect! Tchuess.....

39,284 as she sits outside my temporary lodging in alabama. Good trip down, no big issues besides some rain. I took a detour into Ft. Knox and had some fun on a twisty mountain road going in. Kind of a wasted trip as I did not go on the base, would have taken too long to find my old basic area as it has changed. I guess the old barracks have been torn down. Gas was only $3.65 a gallon in KY, just a bit higher here in Al. I put 6.65 gallons in for a total of $24.35 in Elizabethtown KY (143.4 miles from richwood). that comes out to about 21.6mpg as I was having a blast with the paddles in the mountains! I will top off tomorrow and see what total miles, cost, and avg mpg's are for the trip. 78 degrees when I got in today! Tchuess.....

Well, I am on my way to Huntsville Al and am spending the night in a very nice holiday inn express in richwood ky. I had a good day of driving, some hard rain at times, but no issues for the R32! I left Utica at 9am or so, and got into Cincinatti at 530pm or so. So in 8.5 hours of driving I was able to do 650 miles! That works out to 76.5mph for the trip. The first stint was 190 miles, and put in 8 gallons. 2nd stint was a whopping 278.4 miles! I think that is the longest I have ever gone without a stop. Put in 11.9 gallons for that one, and last stint was 188.8 miles and put in 7.9 gallons. So I averaged 23.3mpg at just under 80mph. You can definately tell people are feeling the high prices of fuel as they are driving a bit slower. I paid on average $3.85 a gallon for the cheap stuff. Car is running great, currently at 38,878 miles as she sits in the holiday inn parking lot. I have spent $107.46 to go 650 miles, ouch! that equals 16.5 cents a mile! oh well, the car is a dream, cruises so nice, and i still love that car! tchuess.....

New Stuff! (UG MkV, Owner: Kelly Juniel)

Picked up some used OEM dark tail-lights and traded my holy grille for a holeless one. Mine didn't have very many pits or anything wrong except for all the holes drilled in it, after getting the new one home noticed it had a lot of pits and a scratch BUT unless you're me, or you look REALLY up close, you won't be able to tell. Pretty excited, it looks like a whole new car! Can't wait to take some new pics. The .:R I traded grilles with is #2262, so wherever that one goes it will have my grille :)

Lil' Mama has 22,444 miles on her today, starting to get up there but not too bad. Had the mechatronic recall done because we were noticing a burning clutch smell, unfortunately we can still smell it but it's not as bad and only happens in sport or manual. There are also some new squeeks and things so we're taking her back soon and hopefully all will be well.

Near Future Plans:
- Might be getting some Bilstein PSS10 Coilovers from the same .:R that I got the grille and tail-lights from, so that will be exciting if it happens.

- Getting the monster mats in the next few days

- Hopefully able to order some 19" VMR v709's soon!

Noticed that over 60mph the car makes a humming noise and i get vibration in the floor until i turn the wheel to the right its pretty much non-existent. next day it starts to make a whine tha goes away when i slow down to 20. doesnt change with engine speed, gear or road speed. made an appt with the dealer for friday. hope its just a wheel bearing

and a slightly hanging rear bumper. Due to the ice build up on the roads around here the tabs that held the rear bumper on broke. Very little other things broken.

I just got back from a trip to Dolgeville and then a trip to Killington VT for a snowboard trip. The R32 did great in the twisties of VT and was a pleasure to drive. I got the car inspected at Gerald's on thursday a.m., current mileage is 36,500 or so. Did about 40 or so donuts in the big parking lots up there. Had fun with a speed warning box in town. Saw a flipped vehicle coming down out of killington, it was snowing a bit and slippery. We made it from killington to Dolgeville in 2.5 hours exactly. 145 miles or so, only stopped once for a bathroom break. Made it from dolgeville to canandaigua in about 2.3 hours, stopped at Mcdonalds! tchuess.....

Started the car up this a.m. and got a check coolant light on the MFD! So I turned it off, popped the hood, and it was low. Added some coolant, went to the dump, got back and it was overfilled. Oh well, I will take some out after a few days if it is still overfilled. It has been cold lately, and that may be the reason. Heading to Killington VT for some snowboarding in a week, should be fun!

Wiper Blades are a PTB....lol (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Pain in the butt for sure. We use a PTB system which alot of places don't carry. RainX says PTB on alot of their nice blades but they don't fit. So if you go get wiper blades, check them at the store asap. The driver side is 24 inch, and pax is 19 inch. Washed the car today as it is 33 outside so I jumped at the chance.

Went to Dolgeville for the weekend... (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Had to head back to D'ville for something personal, made the best of it, and had some fun with the R. Did some nice tight donuts right in my buddies driveway on friday night! It was sooo much fun, then a buddy took it out and had some fun, like 4 or 5 inches of powder on the roads and stuff. On saturday I went through 35,000 miles! Almost got a pic but it was 6 miles past when I saw it. Came home in sleet for a while, rolling 85-90 once it cleared up a bit, 21.1 mpg at those speeds. Car is still a blast, still sounds great at WOT too! Tchuess.....

I finally got my new R to the house last night. The temperature was in the 40s but I still gave it a bath. A significant amount of dust had adhered to the light rain we had a couple days ago. I did drive it to work today, but I will be keeping the miles to a minimum for this first week. It is still scheduled to have the DSG recall work this Friday and I don't like the way the car feels during low speed manuevering and some shift just seem slow.. One more visit to the shop for the DSG and a TPMS light. After that I am expecting a long and happy road.

New rubber and rim paint!! (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

25,830 miles.....Got in from Canandaigua to the house in Dolgeville a few days ago. I took the wife's winter tires off and put the summers on. Dropped the R32 off at the shop, and they mounted the new Hankook Ventus tires on the freshly painted OZ's!! I let the shop get the tires @ $135.00 a piece. 225/40ZR-18 is the size. They flushed the brake system and put Super Blue in, I just need the brake pads now for the track! Tires are feeling great and sticky, if just a bit noisy. The rims got painted VW silver at a cost of $200.00, total bill was $902.00 but I am pleased. Tchuess.....

Snow tires are on..... (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Well, It was a beautiful day out so I figured I would get my snow tires on. I raked for 3 hours and then figured I might as well get the snows on. The mileage is 33,656 as of today. I noticed a loose screw on the left front hub. That corner takes a beating on the track, put some thread lock on it and tigthened it back up. The front tires are torn up from the track this year, but the backs are looking great. Not sure what to do about track tires, will have to figure that one out. I left the EBC yellowstuffs on, as I have decided to go back to the HP + pads as they had alot more braking power. Looking at a rear sway bar or even the haldex controller to help with the understeer. If I get dedicated track tires I will need it to turn better! Any hoo, Tiguan will get snows on tomorrow or Sunday if the wife gets back late. Washed up the R32 and she looks nice! Tchuess.....

Got in the car to go to the gym today and the low tire pressure light was on. All four were a bit low, so I added air to each of them. Drove to the gym and the warning stayed on. Got home and checked the spare, it was down to 52psi or so, so topped it off and I am sure that as it. Got some new EZ-pass velcro today from them and put the ez-pass back up properly. Mileage is 33,340 or so, temp is getting down there. Tchuess......

Picked up the car and it looks like I am the 3rd owner. The 2nd owner appeared to have owned it only for a month.

Car looks great, it has a few rock chips here and there but nothing that can't be taken care of.

It appears to my discovery that the car had some slight work done to the rear right quarter. Had a body shop expert inspect it and verified that it must have been a small repair, possibly getting keyed or a dent.

Might consider making corrections as the fade in was done incorrectly but its not noticeable.

Over a year since my last entry. A list of updates:

- Currently 28,000 miles

- Last October, I participated in the Tipp City Mum Festival Cruise In, held in my town. It's a car show open to any kind of vehicle. Other than a VW Rail dunebuggy, I was the only VW there. I consider it my VW outrach effort. Most folks were amazed that so much engine could be crammed into such a little space.

Also participated in Dub Dash Ocho (8) held in Dayton. It's a 100 mile rally and fun car show. Had a blast and made a new Mk4 R32 friend form KY.

- Had the Mechatronics unit replaced in early 2010. My dealer service manager finally took my car for a ride and agreed that the lurching was not right. The car runs smooth as silk ever since.

- Went to TOD in the spring and had a great time again. I think there were close to 130 R32s there this year.

- Installed a new EVOMS CAI this summer. Love the sound.

- Have ordered both UNIBrace's but have been on the road working and have not had a chance to install them yet. I will be working on this in October.

Some people have replaced their tires 2 or 3 times. I still have 50% of the life left on my original tires. I must not drive as aggressively as some.

Still really love this car. It's my baby and because of dilligent parking practices, still have no door dings - knock on wood...

Watkins Glen 2010 (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Matt rolled in on the 21st of Aug with the R1 on the trailer as we hit the MotoGP at Indy! I did 2 days on the track at the glen with the NEQ. The first day was rainy and the R32 was awesome! I got bumped up into the Red run group and did not know till we got there! The 2nd day was dry, and the R32 did well, but not like in the wet. I am rolling the front left tire pretty hard now, and the Traction Control light is flashing all over the track! I for sure need the RSB and some better tires for next year. Matt drove back each day, we made a nice auto launch video on a back dirt road! Matt got a ride with an instructor in his R8, and they hit 140mph on the back straight going into the bus stop! Heading into the laces (turn 6, the chute), i am now doing 98mph looking at the wall! I remember finally getting to 90mph and that seemed dangerous! So I am getting faster, but the car is at the limit more often. Tchuess.....

Dolgeville run..... (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Had to run down to D'ville to mow the lawn, get some stuff for MotoGP in Indy, and pick up mail. Made it down in 2 hrs or so, lots of rain as I got off in Utica and took the back road in. Huge windmills going up at Bartow Hill area, 83 foot long blades! R32 was sure footed in heavy downpour and standing water. Punching it at 80mph or so, I wish it had some more go, it isn't terrible, just would be nice to have another 100hp or so! Any hoo, ran errands, and headed back, another 2.1 hrs or so. I-90 is so nice now from Syracuse to Rochester, all the construction is about done, and the thruway is smooth and nice! Almost like the Autobahn, but lots less traffic, and left lane drivers! Any ways, car is running great, Watkins Glen in a week! 31.3k miles. Tchuess.....

Got the oil changed about 3 weeks ago @ Dorschel VW in Rochester NY. Great Dealership, really big and nice. Not putting many miles on right now as we are staying on the lake as much as possible! Watkins Glen is coming up at the end of August, looking forward to that. Trying to do Mt. Tremblant in October too! Saw an R32 for sale in Victor, was gone pretty quickly, think I saw him in Rochester last week. Tchuess.....

Lil-Mama (that's my nickname for her lol) hit 18,000 miles 3 days ago. Wish I would've gotten pics of all the other mile milestones hehe

In June we took her to the VW Classic, again didn't win anything but it was fun driving in with all the other VW's.

And here's me and lil-mama, my 3 year old daughter took this pic so I have no head but I still think it's cool LOL

So I've gotten to drive her to and from work for the past 3 months and I loved every minute of it, I looked forward to driving her everyday but yesterday was my last day, hubby will be driving her to work from now on. Hopefully she can just stay in the garage and be a weekend car soon!

Heading to work at Marcellus today I rolled over 30K miles! I took a pic, but it was 3 miles over that, oh well, I was close. I need to schedule my oil change asap as I have been busy with work. I am flying nights here near Syracuse and have been working long days! I flew 2 flts the 1st and 2nd nts here, 3rd was quiet, 4th was a bad ass storm and tonight we will just see. Still loving that car and enjoy driving it every time I get in it! Tchuess.....

Monticello MotorClub full course.... (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

We got 2 great days at the new track in Monticello NY on the full course. We had only done the short course last year, the full is awesome! R32 is a bit underpowered there, and with stock suspension and street Hankook's, it could have done better. But overall I was very happy, I got a video done, with GPS, HD video and OBD2 port info and the video is awesome. I will try and get the shortcut on here. I ran a 3:06 on the full course, not too bad i guess. I definately need better tires for next year, probably an RSB, and some more power! Any ways, the car is at 29,338 miles or so, and still running great! I put nitrogen in the tires for MMC, but they still got awfully hot and climbed up to 46psi from 37 cold. Rolling back with Paul Bondy in his GTI and Bob Trachy in his older passat was an episode. Bot was rolling slow, paul and i a bit quicker. But any ways, coming over a hill I got on it when traffic finally cleared to get into a 1 lane work zone in front of all of the slower cars. Paul did the same, but he got busted at 104mph by a state trooper! It sucked for sure, as we had been held up for miles by a fat chick in a jeep in the left lane! So Paul pulls over when the trooper made a rushed turn around from the other side, and the trooper held him there for 30 minutes. Bob and I continued, and up in the mountains we came up on some old (challenger and duster) cars cruising at 55mph. The back ends were all jacked up, big tires, etc. I followed for as long as i could (bob was driving slower), then i took off. The duster tried to follow but the r32 in the mountains is pretty quick. I passed a local cop at 80mph but he never turned around! Tchuess.....

a look back at 15000 miles (CW MkV, Owner: Ross Edwards)

Hitting 15000 miles yesterday I take a moment to look back at my R32 and consider the pluses and minuses of ownership. This car is not for a V-dub guy barely scrapping by to keep his car running. Not that I've had alot of need for work on the car but the maintenance is more expensive than the average VW. I've driven a few other MKVs and they have thier share of issues including drive train slap in and out of gear. Having had already at least two recalls for the fuel ventilator and now one for coilpacks I am convinced that VW has had some viable complaints with the car. This is nothing new to the VAG family in general as my prior Audi A4 had them as well. The car has performed well through out 4 seasons in Virginia. Traction is never a problem and my only concern has been ground clearance with serious snow for which I shouldn't be driving this car anyway in deep snow.
Mods I've had completed since I bought it include the GIAC chip tuning which add a level of throttle tip in response and a bit more punch than the stock programming seen on other cars. The Neuspeed P-Flo intake also compliments this and adds to the overall sound and performance. The dogbone motor mount / insert was an absolutely stupid easy and required mod for this car. it tightens up the engine slop associated with the stock mounts. Its well worth its cheap price and a recommended mod for any MKV owner. The wheels and tires were done as an effort to track the car. The stock rims weighing in at 28 lbs feel very heavy compared to the 18 lb Neuspeeds RS 10s (18 x 8.0) and with the sticky Direzza Star (225/40-18) Spec rubber on them, I can now overdrive the suspension before the traction gives way as with the stock setup it was the other way around. Note the stock tires are the all seasons.

The car's audio was upgraded as well to some Alpine Type R components and matching amp because - and I'm sure I'm not alone here - the stock stereo lacks. It makes the required distance driving for work much more tolerable.
This coming summer should see a host of suspension upgrades depending on budget and time. Til then.. Bis Gleich

Lime Rock Park was great! (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

28,280 miles as of now, after having driven to D'ville and then to LRP and back to Canandaigua. Rolled to D'ville on thursday morning, and did some stuff at the house. Saw some friends then picked up Matt L. and rolled out to the Million Dollar Hwy. We hit 140mph, and it was still climbing slowly. So that is the benchmark for now, we may try to bump it up a bit. So friday morning I rolled down to LRP and had a great first day of track time. Front left lug nuts loosened up as it is mostly right hand turns, but that was an easy fix. The new EBC yellowstuff brake pads at first didn't feel that good, but they ended up being just right. The initial grab is soooo much smoother than the Hawk HP+ of last year. Not quite the braking power of the hawk's but I had no issues. Tire pressures were going up all day as the temp reached 89 degrees. They were sliding around alot, but the second day was better. As the temps went up after each session we lowered them. So I am happy with the Hankook Ventus V12's evo. Second day I got soloed after the first session, and had a great day! I was able to stay with an R8 for one session, but that was driver more than anything. Plus some traffic at times, but it was cool to see that R8 just in front of me and moving around at the edge of traction. Then I got a ride with Simon (ex Renault factory driver and Rally guy) in a new M3. It was sick, he was sliding it around at will and was killing everything else on the track. It was a lease, and he was beating it up! The car took it all with no issues, stock brakes, pads, tires, etc. What an awesome car! Met some good guys (mark s5, and kevin a4) and we had a blast on the track together! S5 was rolling pretty good for a 4200lb car with a big V8 in the front. Had a great night at Tony's house in Waterbury CT, rolled to the beach in a 1939 Cadillac! Then coming home saturday evening, I did 265 miles in 3.5 hours! I had light traffic, V1, and no troopers on the hwy except one on the Taconic Parkway. I was doing about 80-85, one guy went past me at about 90-95, so I followed. I stayed back about 1/4 mile, with the Valentine One protection! After about 20 minutes I get a beep on the V1, I jam on the brakes and flash my high beams to warn the guy in front of me. Then I see his brake lights come on! LMAO......As I come around the bend, I see a trooper pointed right at us. He flashes his lights, and that was it! Maybe he was a know cop/trooper in the area? Any hoo, made it home no problem rolling triple digits alot of the time. R32 is a great car....Tchuess.....

Worked out at Marcellus yesterday and detailed the whole car! Pulled out all the mats, vacumed the crap out of it, wiped down all the interior surfaces too. Looks really nice and clean inside. Cleaned the rims and calipers up really nice too. Will not wash it now until after Lime Rock Park this friday and saturday! Not much else to do before the track but check the tire pressure and torques on thursday before I head out! Tchuess.....

Had to fly last night to maintain my night currency as I am flying days at this time, so I went thru 27k miles on the way home! It was late and I was tired as it was a full day of work and staying late till it got dark (14 hrs). Noticed it on the way to work this am. Work at the Glen is great, love talking cars with the clubs that rotate through! Last 2 days was the New England Ferrari Club! Sat in a Gallardo and started it up, so sweet, it was a SuperLeggera, dude was from Rochester. Lots of F430's there, more Scudderia's than not. An Aston Martin DB9 went off the track going into turn 1, he lost his brakes. It was messed up, I will add a pic asap. R32 is still great, I am realizing it is a much better car than I thought. Cost wise, which means maintainance (zero dollars), consumables (tires, brake pads, fluids, etc = zero dollars) and no break downs! The car rocks, what can i say. Tchuess.....

26,575 miles, got the pads in, definate improvement over the stockers of course. Haven't really cranked on them super hard, but rolling on the thru-way I got on them a bit and they felt great! I pumped up the new tires to 40psi and it made a difference, really more solid now, feeling good in the corners. Pushing the Esses by my house, I am going through one corner at almost 80mph now, and I used to feel just over 70mph was great! Loving the car more and more, it really is a blast to drive. Ordered an SA2005 helmet from ebay, open face, so I am set for the summer HPDE days! Only spent 100.00, got a good deal on an approved helmet. Leaving for D'ville on wednesday to pick it up and my yellowstuff pads! Looking at a used RSB for 150.00, should help with the understeer! Washed the car at work yesterday in the rain, but got the dirt off at least! Today was my last day of work for the week! I spent 10 hours waxing 105MH to make it look nicer. It is a 1980 model BO-105 and the paint is worn bad. I am smoked, really. Oh ya, going thru Tim Horton's this A.M. i scraped my left front rim a bit. Oh well, it happens, and I have touch up paint. So after Tim Horton's going to work, I had to pass a co-worker who was driving way to slow in her big ole Ford Expedition, hit 100mph easy in the rain. The tires are great, 4 motion rocks, and the light OZ rims help out nicely. Tchuess......

While filling in a whole week at the base in Marcellus, I blasted through 24K miles! I missed it, as I was out at 530am and back at 8pm for 7 days straight. I made it to Marcellus in a snow storm in 55 minutes, and that was encountering 2 troopers. One of which was going the same way for approx 12 miles, so I had to stay behind him of course. I pulled the R32 inside the hangar and detailed her with a wash and wax on saturday. I went thru the whole car, scrubbed the mats, waxed inside the doors and under the hood and tailgate. The windows were spotless too! Then I pulled her outside going home, and she got dirty again. But I knocked alot of crap off, used only hot water and a soft brush! I am so impressed with this car still, just wished for a bit more power. The lights are sick, DSG is so much fun, the stereo is great, I have her set up nice at this point. Instead of getting a car with more tuning potential, i may be back to putting a turbo or SC on her! Tchuess.....

I figured I would try a different brand of pads for this summer. So I ordered some EBC Yellowstuff brake pads, (part # DP41594R) @ $122.09 thru Ebay from Discount Tire Direct. They were shipped last week to the house in D'ville, so I will put them on at the end of April when I get home. That should give me plenty of time to break them in before Lime Rock Park on the 21st and 22nd of May! Current miles is 26,343 and climbing! Tchuess.....

Coming back to Canandaigua I blew right through 26k miles......I tried to remember to get a pic, but was blasting down the thru-way and forgot. The new tires are doing well, pedal feels good with the new fluid, just need to order my brake pads today. Everyone likes the new silver paint, and so do I! The wife's Tiguan had an issue and it went in to limp mode on her way back. She got it to the dealership, it took a while, but I guess it was some sensors and a fuel pump. I guess they said around $800.00 in parts, thanks for the warranty! Tchuess.....

Toronto Autoshow (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

The wife and I went to Toronto last weekend for the autoshow and to relax and eat. The drive up was a blast from Niagra Falls into Toronto, I had put the V1 away and said fuck it and blasted! Canadians are alot worse drivers than the states now, they used to be good. They love the left lane!! I was like a slot car the whole way! Had some fun with a new M3, and I beat them to Toronto, but just from driving better. We ate at the CN tower the first night, so bad ass. It rotates while you eat, dropped a grip their. Car show was fun, no R though, so I was sad. The Nav system worked perfect, got us there nicely. Ate at Bravi the last night, it was good food! Dropped a grip of cash there too, but worth it! Still love the R32, still on the hunt for a bit more power but enjoying what it has now! Tchuess.....

yep yep, happened between Dolgeville and Little Falls NY, heading to Canandaigua. I had just topped off with 93 at Stewarts in D'ville at a cost of 3.17 per gallon! Got the car inspected early last week at Gerald's in town. He does vets inspections for free! I had gotten pulled over by a trooper heading home, it was overdue since August!! LMAO. He let me go, as I told him I was a Mercy Flight Pilot and had recently flown a trooper. Gerald also pulled out a piece of metal in my RR tire as it had a slow leak. No bill, he is the best! Damn I still love this car! Tchuess.....

Heading out for Limerock on friday morning! 2 days with the NEQ Audi club!! $545.00 but well worth it, as you get alot of track time! Car is great, left the track pads on, as I will be hitting the track all summer. Had the recall for the headlight caps done last week, and got my IPOD adapter fixed. Tchuess.....

Let,s see, since last here I have had two tire shops scratch my rims one actually gouged all four. The dealership that changed my haldex fluid dropped the diff fluid instead and had to replace 4k worth of rear differential due to pinion noise. I have replaced the windshield 3 times been through 4 sets of tires (the michelin,s lasted the longest at 18k miles) and burned over 2,000 gallons of fuel. The haldex controller is great but doesn't stay locked like i'd hoped on decel. This is still one of my favorite cars I have owned. only gripes lack of power and speed limiter.

Watkins Glen July 20/21 09 (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Got back from the Glen and had a good time. Car did great as usual, but I am looking for less weight and more HP!!! Considering a 2009 Audi TT for now. 500lbs lighter, and with the 2.0 you have lots of tuning options. I ran about 2:35 this year, down 5 seconds from last year. I guess the rims and chip helped! My R32 is on the left, and a dude's from Ithaaca is on the right. Tchuess.....

Rolling back from the base at Marcellus and just before my exit to Canandaigua I hit 138mph. I just rolled it on and it climbed nice till around 120mph, then slowed down alot. I can roll pretty fast on the thruway now, I flew a State Trooper who had been hit by a tire on the side of the road. He was pretty bad, we flew him to SUNY hospital in Syracuse. Tchuess....

rolled up to Theresa NY to visit my buddy at Ft. Drum. Made it from Rochester to Watertown in 2 hours! That was with a bad snow storm in the Tug Hill Plateau. Averaged 19.2 mpg @ 85-110mph, with the V1 on. Nice trip, love that car for cruising on the hwy. current mileage is around 21,700 or so. Tchuess.....

Well, it was time for the winter tires to go on. And glad i swapped out the track pads on the front too. After a summer and 3 track weekends they were almost done! So the stock pads are back on for the winter, with the stock rims and my winters. The car looks better with the silver rims on, so the Gold OZ's are definately getting painted a different color! 11,011 miles...OZ rims are on!! (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

I put my new rims/summers on, 11,011 miles. I believe i put my winters on at 4850, so I did 6161 miles on the snow tires. If you order OZ rims, you need longer lug nuts. The size is M14x1.5 if anyone needs to know. I took it for a spin with the new rims, it feels a bit better. Although it is cold out and i did not push it. I weighed the stock rims with snow tires (52.5lbs), the OZ ultraleggera's with my stock michelin summers were (42.5)!! so i saved 10lbs per corner as i was hoping for! Tchuess.....

August 2009 (DBP MkV, Owner: Dave Stafford)

About 22,000 miles so far. I had the fuel tank recal done, even though I have never experienced any symptoms of that problem. I have added custom door sills and changed the red coil covers to blue ones. the red ones were two different color red and the blue ones match my DBP paint perfectly. I got the Ziza LEDs and they look great - no issues with fault codes or heat etc.

In April, went to ride the Tail of the "Dragon" US129 on the TN/NC border. 11 miles with 318 turns! That was fun. There were 77 other R32s there. We drove over 250 miles of great roads on Saturday. Had a great time talking cars and making new friends.

Took a trip to Canandaigua NY and saw a DBP R32 so I pulled into his spot. It is 1565, and mine is 1592, so kind of cool. It was a bit rough, but still nice. Never found the guy, but I took a pic. My R32 is over 17k miles, still running perfect. I hit 132mph the other day but ran out of room. Tchuess......

Evoms V-Flow (DBP MkV, Owner: thomas colt)

today I installed my Evoms V-Flow intake. all I can say is WOW. the throttle response is so much better. I love the growl it makes while hitting the gas. I also have noticed that my MPG has gone up while cruising on the highway. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Suspension and brakes upgrade: First impressions (DBP MkV, Owner: Deep Clue)

I picked up my MkV R32 from the dealer today. Besides doing the 20,000-mile service, I had them install Koni FSD struts and shocks; Hawk HP+ front and rear brake pads; ATE PremiumOne front rotors; and ATE Super Blue brake fluid.
In the city, the car brakes exactly the same as before, although pedal modulation seems better. Did I say exactly the same? Almost--now my brakes squeal. Usually not a lot, sometimes quite a bit. It comes mainly from the rear, where I am still running stock (and somewhat worn out) rotors. It doesn't bother me too much, surprisingly enough.

I tried several 70 mph -> 20 mph hard braking exercises, and the front pads exhibited pretty significant fade after 6 times or so. The stock pads NEVER developed fade, even on multiple tracks days at Watkins Glen. This worries me a bit. I did boil the OEM brake fluid in almost every track event, and I am hoping that the ATE SB will do the trick there. But I am left wondering whether stock pads would have been just a s good (and silent).

The suspension is quite nice. On the street, the ride is quite similar to stock, which is a good thing. On potholes, the suspension seems to be able to absorb them better and transmit less jerk to the cabin. When turning or doing slalom, the car is definitely more planted and exhibits less roll/bounce. That said, I was always quite happy with the R32's stock sport suspension--it just felt a bit underdampened, and a bit harsh on pavement defects.

I will try to post more thoughts as I get more seat time with the new configuration.

20,000-mile service (DBP MkV, Owner: Deep Clue)

At Rick's suggestion (#1592) I looked up this web site today and registered my MkV R32. It so happens that I'm taking it to the dealer for its 20,000-mile service tomorrow. After a few track days at The Glen I've realized it is way too easy to boil the OEM brake fluid, and that I could use a little bit more braking power (who wouldn't). I am fortunate that my VW dealer is happy to install aftermarket parts for me, so tomorrow I am bringing in Hawk HP+ front and rear pads, new ATE PremiumOne slotted front rotors, Permatex ceramic-based caliper grease, and ATE Super Blue Racing brake fluid. I'm also bringing in Koni FSD struts and shocks to try and increase the dampening rate of the car a bit without losing driveability. I am happy with the stock springs, so those stay in. I will report on the performance and impressions of these upgrades.

I am very happy with the Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics and the O.Z. Racing Alleggeritas. The tires are grippy, predictable, give me plenty of feedback, and boy are they good in the wet. Paired with the lightweight wheels, the steering response is at a whole new level.

Before all of the above I had already gone the "engine upgrade" route: A VF Engineering CAI, APR 93/100 reflash, and a Milltek Sports resonated exhaust. I can definitely feel the car drives "smoother" with these three, which I guess is code word for "a few extra ponies." Nevertheless, I am generally disappointed.

Just picked my R up from a dealer 3 hours away from home. It ws a perfect day and a perfect drive to test out the car and see what I just bought.

What an incredible ride... Firm but comfortable suspension, grippy tires; lots of power without being harsh and a smooth shifting DSG.

GTech pro updated numbers!!! (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Well, I went out again to get some better numbers. I rolled out to the million dollar hwy and had some fun. New 0-60 is 5.90, 1/4 mile is 14.40@99.1, and 218awhp. Better figures than those from a few days before. Watkins glen on monday and tuesday!! Sleeping in utica, so i can roll out and save some time in the am. Tchuess.....

I borrowed a GTech Pro from a buddy to see what numbers we could come up with. I am still learning it, but not too hard to use at all. I came up with a 1/4 mile time of 15.36@96.9mph, 190awhp, and a 0-60 of 6.44. Not too bad for a first run, will try again in the future. I used a weight of 3710, 3510 car, 175 me, 25 fuel. 15404 miles, when i just washed her. we took a trip to stamford on saturday to see some friends. Had fun crossing from NY into MA on the Taconic Parkway! Rough road, but the R32 took it fine, and handles the bumps very well. Hit some heavy rain saturday nt heading home, but thanks to rain-x and the awd we rolled at 85-90mph on the thruway. Patty's tiguan just went over 19,000 miles!! still runs and drives like new! Tchuess.....

Drove to Utica last night, averaged 28mpg round trip. That was doing around 75 a few times too. Drove to Little Falls today and avgd 27.4!! I am happy, as the K&N will pay for itself faster than I thought. Tchuess.....

I put my new K&N drop in filter in yesterday, and trimmed up the stock intake a bit. There is a tab that i cut away, seems like it might help with the airflow just a bit. I hope to see my MPG's go up a bit, so we shall see. Tchuess.....

Had a great time at Lime Rock Park with the NEQ, and my buddies. Made it down and back with no issues thanks to the V1. R32 was great on the track again. Friends who have A3's with full coilovers and the R32 hangs in the corners stock suspension and all. Stock Michelin Pilot's are holding up well, 3 track weekends now.

I guess C2 has a entry/cheaper turbo system coming out in mar/apr 09. I may get that one as it is 5k, no fmic or bb turbo, but almost same amount of HP. But I am not sure yet, I will have to see. Still looking at rims/tires for the street and for the track next summer. My rotors are no longer blue, they are blackened from the heat from Watkins Glen. I guess those HP +'s really heat up good, lol. Tchuess.....

Monticello Motorcar club (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Rolled down to Monticello NY with my NEQ audi club for 2 days of track time. We were on the south course, but it was fun, 1.6 miles of tight fun. The R32 was impressive again, very capable car for pretty much stock. A 360 modena went off twice, and lots of others went off. The track guys were mad, going to charge us i guess. I had to no issues, changed my steering and improved quite a bit. Tires are doing fine, no issues.

Stupid Tires (DBP MkV, Owner: Keith White)

10k Service done, AC fixed. "Faulty sensor drained all the freon from the AC system through the sensor itself" says the dealer.

Two front tires had golfball sized bubbles apparently from potholes. Replaced at a cost of $154 a tire. Wonderful.

So i got a flat. used my jack upside down cause i'm dumb and put on my spare. Went to the Dealership and they told me they didn't have the size tire for my car. So i asked about the slightly bigger radius tires and they put them on for me. I asked them if it would mess my car since i have all wheel drive. I've noticed that when i accelerated out of the parking lot my car jerked left and right, and seems like the jerk is coming from the back end. I went back to them and they told me it was because of the wear on my tires but i think he is just an idiot and i hate him. I will be buying two more tires to the same size as the ones on the front, but my question is....is my transfer case in danger if i take it slow to and from work which is half a mile from my house. I could easily walk but i like my sleep

I got the APR flash at my buddies shop about 2 weeks ago. I have been busy and failed to make an entry! I have almost 12k miles now, and can feel the chip. I got the 93 flash, while it was on sale, and my buddy only charged me invoice of $340.00!! So i was pleased. I can feel the difference down low, not much but it is there. I may be getting a used turbo kit from off of a guys TT, i need more info on it tho. Tchuess.....

I stayed with him, don't think he was all the way, but passed him at 120mph. I think the AWD was the ticket. Still on the winters, will put the summers on thursday for sure! Great Ride (DBP MkV, Owner: Tony Lucas)

I'm new to the registry and thought I would share my experience w/my R32. Bought the car in Oct 08; it had been sitting on a lot for about a year. MSRP was just under $34 (non navi) and I paid $29K. When my local dealership brought it in, there was what appeared to be rust on the discs and the brake pads looked worn and the vehicle had only 100 miles on the odo. My dealership took great care of the car by shaving the discs and repainting the interior of the wheel rims. They also installed brand new pads. They did a great job and the wheels look good as new. My R now has 5900 miles on it. I had the oil changed at 4750 and they replaced an air vent b/c it was making a slight squeaking sound that started around 4000 miles. I've never experience the dreaded gas line problem and the car has performed flawlessly for my first 5 months of ownership. The launch control is a real hoot! I have owned nothing but manuals until purchasing this car and must say that the DSG is definitely the best of both worlds; I leave it in the manual gate most of the time and thus I'm not achieveing great gas mileage (usually 18-19 around town, but have gotten up to 24 on a mostly highway trip). It truly is a great car and I love not seeing many on the road. My kids totally dig the exhaust note too! Will update again around 10K.

I am still putting on the miles at a descent clip. Car runs and drives great, still no issues. We took it to Gore Mtn in upstate NY last wednesday and it was a blast in the deep snow. My friend drove it home and was impressed with it. Gas mileage is improving very slightly, I am hoping to be around 22mpg soon. I just heard about the R20 which is the new R for 2010, using the 2.0 turbo. I would like the R42 version i heard about, but will probably get whichever one is the actual one that comes out. The R20 is going to have 270hp from what they are saying. Tchuess.....

Winter 2009 (DBP MkV, Owner: Dave Stafford)

Turned over 15,000 this month. This thing is a blast in the snow. I had someone stop me and ask if that was a custom color - he thought DBP was a great color.

I went to DubDash here in Dayton again last October. Had a great time. Took my son along as navigator, and he had a blast too. The starter told me I had "burnout of the day" when I used launch control to start the rally. I didn't smoke the tires, but it did chirp the tires a bit and then I was gone... During the rally, I had a terrible grinding sound a couple of times. I think it was a pebble stuck in the brakes picked up from one of the gravel roads. The sound has not returned.

I am still looking for a nice set of door sills, and am considering the R-line sills from ECS. I have oredered the full set if ZiZa lights from ECS, but they have been on backorder since mid December. For a long while I wanted the EVOMS CAI, but have since cooled off on that. The car seems to run almost perfect as is.

Can't wait for spring so I can do a thorough cleaning and detail. Although my dog has never been in the car, there is a lot of dog hair accumulating on the black carpet - probably transferred from my shoes...

rolling in to work this sunday morning on the hwy i decided to run it up a bit. It pulled no problem to 130mph and smooth as butter. i am impressed, will be interesting to see what i am able to get out of it when i get it chipped this spring/summer. I am signed up for a winter driving course on Caroga Lake in upstate NY in feb, and Monticello Motorclub in central NY in May, should be fun! Tchuess.....

Open Track day @ MSR Cresson (DBP MkV, Owner: Mike B)

Went to an open track day in the R32. 1:35's on the 1.7 CCW. On the stock Dunlop's with 39 PSI.

Also noticed their pace car was an R32 as well. I wonder what times they were running? They are probably 10 seconds faster than I, LOL. While I was at VIR this past June, I again, noticed their pace was car was an R32.

6 months = 5000 miles, not bad. I took this vehicle to South Texas for the holidays. 800 mile round trip. Car gets 20.9MPG driving 85-90MPH. For those that arent driving that speed in Texas, you will get run over. :)

Dropped the car of to get the rear window re-tinted. Apparently these cars are difficult to tint, much less retint. Hope it turns out well.

I got home from work on Sunday night, washed my R32 on monday and she has been in the garage since then! The weather has been snowing and the roads are crap, so I have been driving my pickup. I am at about 6800 miles or so, the wife's Tiguan is at 9700! She goes in for her first oil change on tuesday at Paollozi in Utica NY. I ordered new center caps for the OZ rims, 16 bucks a piece at the Tire Rack, x 4!! Oh well, i got two extras.....Tchuess.....

Lots of snow this past week/weekend (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Have been doing alot of driving in the snow, so far so good. Miles is up to 6550, as of today. Have been picking up ice inside of a rim though, shakes it up a bit. Mileage seems to be improving a bit as more miles pile on. I average 23mpg driving down to work today. That was in some snow, averaging about 55-60mph. My wife's tiguan is approaching 10k miles, due for its first oil change. Thcuess....

Man, it sure takes me a while to update this thing.

Had my 20k service, no snags. Casey Imports here in Newport News has a really nice shuttle service available for free, so I was able to get back to work.

The Leather Master leather cleaner stuff is GREAT. You have to be generous enough with it to get it to foam up, so you can apply the foam to the leather. Let the foam sit for a bit (couple minutes) and then dry it with a clean cloth. Makes my leather seem almost new.

Added a photo from the Offlinedubs meet back in February, but of course meinwirt.com's uploader won't display here at work. Fun is NOT allowed on DoD networks, let me tell you.

The way gas prices have gotten, it's amazing that I can fill up my car from 1/4 tank and spend less than $20. I guess prices will go back up, but I'm enjoying it right now!

My new/used bronze OZ rims are in the mail from california! I am now looking at an intake/chip/exhaust instead of a turbo kit. Now I am not sure if I want to spend 7k on the C2 kit, then 2k more on install, gauges, and misc. I think that would be alot of money on a 32k car that I would not recoup. Maybe just the save the money and save up to trade in on a GTR?? Tchuess.....

Bought new/used rims... (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Well, I got a good deal on some used OZ ultra leggara rims. They are bronze and I think they are gonna look nice on the DBP!! Yes, they are the subby colors, but I really like that look. Mileage is around 5800 or so. Snow tires are performing great, had a blast on Sunday night coming home through the Catskill mountains. Heavy snow, I passed a 4x4 and a jeep at the same time on a very short straight....it was nice, fun, and easy.........the OZ rims are coming from cali, off of an A3. they are about 18lbs or so, so about 10lbs less than the stock rims. I am hoping for about 40lbs less of rotational mass, should go and turn lots better. Tchuess....

I have added a lot of small, but costly, mods to the car.

Nater, a moderator on Vortex, and I met up and he Vag-Com'd the car for me.

We enabled the bi-zenon hi-beams, enabled the flash-to-pass, enabled the windows up/down from remote, disabled the DRLs, disabled the seat belt indicator, disabled the headlight washers, disabled the horn on the door locks, etc.

well, coming up on my first oil change on monday. I ordered the OEM filter and will have to find out the recommended oil. I have my winters on my stock rims now, I put Hankook Icebears on as they were on my X-3. No snow yet, but I am sure they will work well. When i put my snow tires on, i put my stock pads back on as they dont squeal. I am dropping by the VW dealership on monday to have them look at my Ipod adapter, it does not recognize any Ipod's I have tried. Tchuess.....

I did my first oil change in my garage at 5,008 miles. I used the OEM Mann filter and Mobil 1. Ended up costing about $67.00 total, plus my time. It is a cartridge type filter, but not difficult to change. You have to use the Vagcom to reset your service light, I use my buddies. Tchuess.........

R32 at Watkins Glen (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Took the R32 out to Watkins Glen, it really impressed me alot!! I put some HAWK HP plus's on the front, but other than that it is stock. I did about 200 miles thru the weekend on the track. Thru the corners on my last day, it was about equal to all the relatively lightly modified cars, some even with R compound tires. I believe I was running around 2:40, clocked by a friends kid. A white R8 was running about 2:20 clocked by me. I was able to hold my own and not get passed often. I held an R8 off for almost a lap, but too much HP for me! A carrera S was beating me on the straights, but i would close in and get him on the corners. I passed a Z06, but was killing him on the corners. Of course it is driver, more than car. I have 4113 miles on her now and she is running perfect. The NE chapter of the Audi club is great! Watkins Glen is a great track too. There was an 04 R32 there, pretty much stock and he was flying too! Tchuess.....

Last runs of the year (DBP MkV, Owner: Jim Totten)

After adding a neuspeed torque arm insert, went to Pacific Raceways in Kent , Washington for the last 1/4 mile track day of the year. Ran a 14.70@93 mph, but ran a 14.48@94 over at bremerton. Had a great time, and compared to the other street cars at the track, I was competitive. Put the stock rims with the Contis back on the car for the winter. Now just looking forward to getting chipped this winter, and driving SCCA next spring!!

Removed V6 Plate, Added R32 Badge (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

Before I had even received my R32, I purchased an R32 badge with the intention of removing the V6 badge from the intake manifold and adding the R32 badge like the MkIV R32 has. Then once I got my R32 I realized that the V6 badge wasn't going anywhere, it was molded into the large plastic plate along with the VW logo. So I abandoned that idea.

Then I found out that on the MkIV there was no plastic plate at all (duh) and some MkV guys had removed the plate and either left it blank or added the R32 badge. So I gave that a try last night. Looks pretty good.

Finally got around to ordering some euro taillights. I've been wanting these for a long time but wasn't able to justify the $300 purchase until now.

Some people might think it's silly to spend that kind of money on darkened taillights, but I thin it's a big improvement on the looks of the rear end, plus the rear fog is nice too.

Strut Bearings Replaced (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

It's been a while since I updated, but today the R had it's first real visit to the dealership. Sure I had the grill replaced quite a while ago, but that was a minor job that took an hour or so. I started noticing the infamous worn strut bearing sound when I turned the wheel at a slow speed, so took it in. They replaced both strut bearings, no more noises.

Also lightly detailed the car yesterday so it was all clean and shiny when I dropped it off at the shop.

Grabbed a couple paint touch-up pens as well, filled a few small chips on my driver and passenger door edging.

So I had the R32 back in the shop today to have the steering rack replaced, due to a clunk when turning the wheel back and forth. Had my tech install a BFI subframe bushing insert while he was in there. After bolting everything back up and aligning the beast. Everything is good! No more clunking!

Pushing the corners more and more.... (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

I drove home last night, a 2.1 hour drive, mostly thru the Catskill Mtns. I am pushing the car more, getting alot better feel for it. The handling is incredible, the brakes work pretty darn well too. I have new pads coming this week, and hope they add a bit more stopping power. I was really pushing it hard, and then noticed the temp was 33f. Not a big deal, but the tires seemed to grip well, and performed great. The car seems to be gaining a bit of power, or it is just me driving it better. I saw someone in reading PA is getting the C2 system. Please keep me posted! I may email you later. Tchuess.....

VAGCOM (DBP MkV, Owner: Rick Cote)

Well, I just got back from reprogramming my R32 with the Vagcom/program at a friends Audi shop. I learned alot, and figured I would share what I learned. I got a reprogramming guide that was made on the R32 forum by one of the subscribers. Then I went to my friends shop (Salisbury Motorcar) in upstate NY, and used there laptop and cable. The program is free, the cable is about 320 dollars from what I learned. So I am going to download the program, and my buddy is going to let me use his cable! I plan on buying him some beer. You go in, as described on the forum, I recorded my initial codes, just in case. Then you go in and change things you want, not too hard. Just tab thru the bytes to get to the individual bits. So to get those inside halogens to come on (highbeam), you must program it as a UK car. I did that after other tries, and it worked! The temperture changed to celsius, but I think i can change that in the car. I can now open my windows and sunroof with the key fob, and if it rains, my windows and SR will close. did some other things too. if you have questions, just email me. Hit 110mph on my road nearby, so that was fun and a baseline for future mods. Tchuess.....

The weather got cold, down to high 30's or so, and my TPMS light went off. Figured it was the cold, but as the day went on it stayed on. That night I checked the pressures and they were where they should be. I put a couple of psi's in, as that is what the forums said. I drove it around and it stayed on. Long story short, the spare is monitored as well, I thought my friends were joking! It was low, I put it back up to 60psi, and the light went out! I have about 2375 miles now, still love the car! I just ordered my snow tires, that will be going on my original rims. In the spring I am ordering some lighter rims and will put the Michelin's back on if they are descent. Tchuess.....

I just found this site, figured I would start logging. I was looking for a replacement for my 2004 BMW X-3 as I had it for 4 years. I was sad to trade it in, but it was time for something different and a bit more sporty. Looked at the S4 hard, but liked the R32 due to the cost and the wife having a new Tiguan. So far I am happy with it, just got over 700 miles on it. Mileage is slowly improving, first tank was 18.2, second was 20.2, working on the third tank. I paid 32k with nav, and i think that was a fair deal. I love the nav, not sure why everyone knocks it. Looks nice, color is nice, better than the alpha-numeric digits on the car without nav. any hoo, will continue to log in. tchuess....

Just over 2200 miles as of today, still learning and enjoying the car. I drove it home from work last week and really had a great ride through the Catskill Mountains of NY state. The ESP really works well, doesn't seem to abruptly control things. My X-3 would really cut in, and shut things off, as the R32 mildly does things while allowing you to continue pushing the car. I also put a 3m clear bra on, which was some what tough and time consuming. It came out well, took about 5 hours with 2 people. I did the invisi-mask, hood and bumper kit. $200 bucks, and $100 bucks to have someone with some experience help me. Made a few mistakes, but nothing too bad. I am approaching 2000 miles on the R32, and still loving it. Drove it to Philly for some helicopter training at the beginning of Sept. I stopped in my friend's house and he loved the DSG. compared to his SMG he likes it alot. Made it back to home in 5 hours from Philly, had alot of fun too! Signed up for an Audi Driver's Course at Watkins Glen at the end of october! It should be fun, keeping it stock for now except changing the front brake pads. Gas mileage is slowly improving, hoping for something in the 22's soon if i can take it easy. Tchuess.......

Always a good day to be looking forward to in the Colorado VW car show season. The 100 mile trek from Denver to Colorado Springs. Always a fun one, got off to a slow start ended up being a caravan with my car, a friends 01 Golf/ 02 GTI/ 01 Jetta WB/ 97 Jetta GLX/ 02 GTI 337.

Full Hand Wax with 3M, Mileage: 12,200 (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

Today I applied a nice layer of 3M wax to the entire R32. It didn't take as long as I thought it would take and the result was astounding.

Ever since I bought a water filter setup for my hose, washing the car is so much easier. I don't bother drying anymore since the filtered water dries spot free.

My last entry was back in January. Good grief!

Not a whole lot going on with the car, really. I've tried a few different kinds of cleaners for the interior leather, and have ended up with Leather Master. I have yet to try it, but I've heard good things. I'm just trying to keep the flat gray, grainy matte finish on the steering wheel and seats. I don't like it when leather gets shiny.

I had a scare the other day when the car told me to shut it off immediately thanks to low coolant. I did, went back inside and got a water bottle full of water, and filled just above the min mark. Stopped by the dealer and picked up some coolant (holy freaking 1 1/2 lifetimes supply!), so next time I can fill up to the min line with coolant and maintain the optimum 50/50 mixture.

Other than that, just dents and dings and scratches as you'd expect with the rest of humanity having no respect for other people's property.

Mileage Check (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

Getting close to 20k, currently 16,700. Everything is great, just been keeping it clean. I've been slowly tweaking my washing process since I purchased this car a little over a year ago. Currently I wash the whole car as normal, then dry with MF towel while occasionally spraying with quick detailing wax to help avoid water spots. I used to let the water dry, then hit it with quick detailer, but I got a lot of water spots with that technique. To get rid of them, I mixed up some white vinegar 50/50 with distilled water and washed the whole car with this stuff. Amazing how the mixture cuts through water spots like butter. Now I'm super anal about keeping water spots off the car and am much happier with the overall look.

I stupidly let a few small bird shits sit on my paint for a few days, wrongly assuming that it wouldn't be a big deal since I just gave it a nice coating of wax. Boy was I wrong, that crap etched right into the clear coat. Oh well, time to invest in a good buffer/polisher anyway.

Autocross School @ Waterfest (DBP MkV, Owner: Chris Norton)

For kicks and to maybe learn how to improve my driving skills, I participated in an autocross school for $85 at Waterfest. It was fun driving the course but a bear to work it. Not a speck of shade was to be had in 107 F day!

New front grille! (DBP MkV, Owner: Dave Stafford)

Had my new "hole free" grille installed today. Looks good! On my request, VW corporate offices allowed me to keep my old grille (keeping it just in case I have any problems with running without the required front plate).

Tried installing the sill plates earlier this month but got them on crooked - the adhesive was very agressive - when I tried to reposition them, they were destroyed. Oh well, they didn't look that great anyway - cheap looking silk screening. Will look for other options.

Also talked further with ECS. They wanted to use a car that wanted all the mods they were going to do. I didn't want the lightweight crank pully, so I passed on the rest as well...

Friend Andy and I finished up the longboard today and it looks frickin sweet! I'm still a little sketchy on the board but getting use to it.

Andy does awesome work with the board and the metal base insert for support (You know how big dudes are :P ) He calls them scallops which I think is pretty funny, yet fitting at the same time. Gotta love the engine turn trim.

Just wanted to mention that a couple weeks ago, the nice folks at OEMPL.US put things right with the screwed up mirror housings. Since it was going to be 3 weeks before they could get more, they ordered the housings from my local dealer's parts department and had them delivered there. Then I just showed up where they popped on the missing housing. OEMPL.US also sent me a pre-paid shipping label to return the mismatched set.

Update (DBP MkV, Owner: Dave Stafford)

Within the last week, I turned over10,000 miles, had the 10K service done and added JCaps oil, coolant & washer fluid caps to the engine bay and seat back knobs. Been taking kids to the ballpark and back and fourth to college so the miles added up this week.

During the 10K service, the dealership sprayed some sort of spray lubricant on the hinge areas - WAY too much - and the spray stuff melted the nice heavy grease that has been on those hinges since I got the car. All of the greasy mess ended up flowing out of the door hinges down the jamb and out onto the lower part of the car, causing a greasy mess to clean up. Hope I got most of it off, and that it doesn't collect too much dirt now...

I like the look of my new JCaps, but noticed the engine bay ones get quite hot to handle.

Ordered R32 door sill plates from England, but have not gotten them yet, hopefully they will come in the next few days.

Still lovin it.

The other day, my brother in law was visiting from Washington state. He and I went to pick up my son from school. On the way back, about 1:00am, we stopped on a tree lined back country road, and I gave him a demo of launch control. The road was lined with trees that went over the road so with bright lights on, the effect was like launching out of a launch tube on one of those Sci-Fi movies like Battlestar Gallactica. It was great - he drives a Camry and his mouth was hanging open afterward. Even with three full sized adults in the car, she launched very well.

For fathers day I got one of those Mr. Clean spray nozzles that rinses the car with de-ionized water and is supposed to leave no water spots. Looking forward to using that.

R32's first time in the shop (CW MkV, Owner: Jonathan Lee)

Well I had the R32 in the dealership today to get the front strut mounts and bearings replaced, to correct a binding sound in the steering at a stop or slow speeds. Also, to get the B-pillar trim piece replaced for being a bit wobbly. Also had the unholy grill installed today as well. Happy days!!! That same night toy'd around with a friend who's buddy has a 1000bhp Mustang that was passing through town, so had to hang out with them.

Not so plug-and-play (DBP MkV, Owner: Chris Norton)

But since the DRLs are still enabled on my car, it doesn't really work yet. I'm scouring the web for the needed VAG-COM codes. Better yet, I'll phone up oempl.us and ask Josh for direction.

I was pretty happy with the prospect of getting them on my car this past Saturday until I realized they sent me 2 driver's side housings. This is like opening a box of shoes and finding you've come home with two left shoes! What's frustrating me is they say they're sold out of the housings and all they can do is refund my money. This is another thing for my phone call tomorrow.

On a positive note, the Aspherical Mirror Set truly was plug-and-play.

My blind spots are no longer blind! I can see into that space without having to turn my head. Why aren't all US cars using this design? It seems so basic to safety and accident avoidance

ScotchGuard (DBP MkV, Owner: Chris Norton)

Got my final preventive interior/exterior maintenance out of the way today. After an hour I had completely vacuumed the inside and applied ScotchGuard to all the carpets.

Like the Post-It-Note, the original formula for Scotchgard was discovered accidentally in 1952 by 3M chemists.

On a personal note, I paid off my 0% financed down payment - yay! Now I have parts of the way: chrome mirror housings, the euro headlight switch and the Euro/ROW spec aspherical side mirrors to eliminate the blind spots

Installed Clear Sidemarkers (DBP MkV, Owner: Chris Norton)

Money is still tight while I pay off my down payment but I had the urge to mod my car just a little bit. So for $40 I decided to replace the orange sidemarkers with these:

I likey... In the day time, they're dimmer than the OEM markers but at night they look every bit as good. But who cares about how they're lit in the day time anyway? They just look better clear than that glaring orange color.

Leather Care (DBP MkV, Owner: Chris Norton)

I've never owned a car with a leather interior. All my other cars have had cloth seats. The car is outside in the elements 100% of the time, no garage and I'm concerned about long-term UV exposure. Well the owner's manual provides some guidelines so I went out and got a container of LEXOL Conditioner wipes. Good stuff and many people think it's the best.

Since this was the first time I was treating the leather, I made sure to apply the stuff to every square inch. It must have taken me a solid 2 hours but I feel better for having done it. The container of wipes is nearly depleted. Maybe next time I'll get the lotion or spray

I went into Boston yesterday to drop off my sister in law at the dentist and i stopped by and picked up a custom intake (made it myself) and while i was in the parking lot i snipped the vaccume line that controlls the flapper. (plugged it with a smal screw) Today i talked with my father in law and he has access to a MODIS and a pipe bender so i might be getting a chip and a custom exhaust done pretty soon now that the weather is getting nicer. ^_^

Washed & Detailed (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

I detailed the interior today, started by pulling the monster mats and vacuuming the heck out of it. Then clean all surfaces with Meguiars vinyl and leather cleaner. Then condition the seats and steering wheel with Meguiars leather conditioner.

Once this was done, gave it a wash. The pollen from the oak trees right now is going off. Park anywhere remotely close to an oak and you will surely get a fluorescent green powder (pollen) covering your car. How lovely.

Went to my first large GTG. It was awesome. All generations represented well. I believe I was one of four MKV R's.

Oh my baby is all fixed, except for a few minor interior things that need fixing. Also got my summer tires back on. Winter is fun but spring is nicer.

UV & Heat Shield ordered (DBP MkV, Owner: Chris Norton)

Yay. I placed an order today for a Covercraft UV Heat Shield that's custom sized/shaped to the R32's windshield No more worrying about the pounding sun on my leather seats. It happens every day since my car sits facing that way in a train station parking lot.

It's more $$$ than the one size fits all cheapo windshield heat shield but I'm convinced it's going to be worth it. If anyone reading this decides to buy one, the link I gave above is to the dealer I found had the absolute lowest price and free shipping. I have no association with them but the Covercraft site lists about 23 dealers and I took the time to price them ALL. My final cost including the custom storage bag was $48.30

The once a year car polish (DBP MkV, Owner: Chris Norton)

I'm the type who just doesn't have the time or patience to use traditional waxes and all the associated tools and accessories. But I DO want to protect my new car's finish. Thankfully I discovered a product called "Nu Finish" several years ago. I'm not trying to promote this stuff but it's one of the few times I've found truth in advertising.

Like the bottle says "The Once A Year Car Polish" and it lives up to that claim in my experience. No rubbing, no buffing and it can be applied in direct sunlight. Perfect. It suits me.

This stuff is easy to work with... nearly. I really like this product and I'll continue to use it but it has one catch. You've got to be careful not to apply it to painted plastic, metalized plastic and rubber seals. It can permanently discolor the plastic. If you do get some on plastic bits, just use a damp cloth and wipe off any excess immediately and you should be fine. So just be careful when working on the panels around the front bumper.

All in all I think I spent 3 - 3.5 hours on the job. It took that long because I applied it to every square inch of painted metal including the door sills, behind the rear license plate, under the front bumper and side skirts, under the hatch cover, etc. My "reward" afterwards was a nice 28 mile drive on some twisty, light to no traffic rural roads.

As I expected, after I had applied Nu Finish, the light swirls left in the clearcoat from the first mechanized car wash are virtually gone. If you're looking to get rid of swirls or even scratches, I suspect the company's $6 "Scratch Doctor" will do wonders for you. ;-)

The actual application process is easy: apply with a damp soft cloth, allow to dry to a haze (2 minutes), and use a clean cloth to wipe it off.

Back to purfect! 9600 Miles (TR MkV, Owner: Neil C)

Returned to have the fogged tail light replaced. Looks great and now she has no problems! Weather is getting warmer more and Sparky and I are getting more time. Upon start up she says “Service Now” even though she hasn’t hit 10,000 miles yet. Before I went to Phoenix I did the oil change early at 4,500 miles. So now at 9,500 she demands service (a true woman, lol) and the math is a bit off. Guess she figured she would split the difference before nagging. Really looking forward to doing more with here but I’ll have to wait until after tax time!
I hope to get some decent pictures this spring too after a professional wax!

Unholey Grill 9500 Miles (TR MkV, Owner: Neil C)

The grill came in! Took me two weeks to get a hole to schedule an appt. They performed the software mods that I already had done which re-enable the DRLs. I switch off the DRLs right away. I had a fogged tail to which they ordered a replacement. Motor is stronger and still very satisfied with overall build quality. “Sparky” still inspires strong feeling just looking at her!

Today I drove down to San Antonio (from Austin) to have my hole-free grill installed at Rod East Volkswagen. I cannot express how stoked I am that I finally have a hole-free grill. In the last 6 months I've probably talked to 6 different VWoA employees, 1 supervisor, two service managers at the dealerships in Austin (at least on 4 different occasions) and finally, the service manager at Rod East who said "sure, come on down and we'll install it".

Or so I'm told. I've been treating the car with kid gloves as it's still in its break-in period. This is of course the exact OPPOSITE of what I did for my test drive. I've read from many other owners that the gas mileage continues to improve beyond the 500mi break-in for the engine all the way up to 1400 according to one owner. So I think I'll go easy on the car until at least 850.

my first vw. the r32 is a great car. the brakes and acceleration is outstanding, but why no power drivers seat?
fuel economy is not great, but thats understandable.
its a blast to drive and i love the attention i get.
i was going to get a gti, but the fact that only 5000 of these exist in the u.s. made me want to be part of an exclusive club.
now i have to start saving money for any mods i might have in the future.

First Trip (DBP MkV, Owner: Barry Wallace)

Drove from Atlanta, GA to Knoxville, TN this morning. According to the trip computer the car averaged 25 mpg. Once I fill the tank I'll calculate it manually and see what I get.

Great vehicle, can't wait until the engine is broken in and I can open it up!

Playing with complimentary (90 days worth, anyway) Sirius satellite radio kept me occupied during the three hour drive. I'm curious to see how it compares to the XM satellite radio I had previously.

Great Car! (DBP MkV, Owner: Dave Stafford)

It's been a while since my last entry. Just wanted to say I have been enjoying this car alot. I now have 7300 miles on it. Have driven it on several trips up to 6 hours at a time.

Had an oil change at 5K miles. Using Castrol synthetic oil - man that stuff is expensive! I will probably offset that cost with less fequent oil changes. Used regular oil on my Mk3 GTI VR6, & have changed the oil every 3K miles. The new car, with synthetic calls for oil changes every 5K.

Things I like about the car (in no particular order):
- Ride. Very comfortable yet still has a firm, confident ride.
- Comfortable seats. Heated seats are really nice in the cold winter temps.
- Handling. I can drive this car with complete confidence that it will go where I point it.
- THE SOUND of the exhaust - AWESOME!
- Road holding capabilities, especially in the rain
- Snow is fun to drive in, but you need to be carefull about not over doing it - stopping on ice and snow takes some practice.
- I know others have knocked the NAV, but I like it - it's my first car with NAV. i purchased the latest DVD from NAVTEQ, late last fall.
- iPod dock. I like the concealed dock in the armrest, and the charging feature.
- Love the look and feel of the steering wheel.
- Launch control is fun, but haven't used it much as I am not big into racing others.
- I use S mode most of the time - it's fun. Use D mode when I'm with the wife - she doesn't like the higher reving engine in S mode.

Dislikes:
Crappy iPod display & interface on the NAV screen.

I used to wipe it down after every outing. The winter has been tough to keep it clean with the road salt and cold temps. I can't wait for springtime.

I have been to Akron (area) to visit with the folks at ECS Tuning. They are thinking of using my car to develop some R32 mods. I don't want to go too crazy and will pick and choose the mods I will participate in.

I have only seen one other Mk5 R32 on the road in a 4 state area near home. (plenty at VW dealers) Loving the rarity, but would like to meet with other R32 owners. I am hoping that there will be a GTG within a days drive of Dayton that I can participate in.

Have had a couple of comments from folks about the meaning of my lisence plate. "BLAU R32". A Mk4 R32 already had my first choice - BLUE R32 - so I settled for the german word for blue. Then I found out another R32 in Illinois has the same plate. As they say imitation is the most sincere form of flatery... or something to that effect.

I went to a VW GTG in Dayton last October, "Dub-Dash" and was the only Mk5 R32 there. It was a fun 110 mile drive through some pretty Ohio country. Lots of nice cars and some others that were well used but still loved. Great hospitality from everyone. I met a fellow VW enthusiast there and made friends. He has a hydraulic lift in his garage, and has since done some reairs to my other vehicles. I plan to ask for his help with future mods and service. I will do Dub-Dash again next year.

I still have not spotted another new R32 in my area. My VW dealer (Bernardsville) had a great low cost lease which allowed me to get into this car. My sales rep said he leased 3 others over the MLK weekend, so there should be a few running around my area now.

5000 Mile Service (TR MkV, Owner: Chris Kennedy)

Had my 5,000 mile service performed yesterday at about 5400 miles. The car definitely feels a lot faster, as many others have noted occurs at around this stage.

I asked about the auxiliary heater and they said they'd have to get back to me later since they had to call VWoA about it. Oh well. I can never expect a dealer to really go above and beyond these days. It's sad, really. I think I'm going to have to get my own VAG-COM.

I also bought new center caps for the wheels, seeing as the center cap-things we have on our NA market wheels are terrible. Here's the part number:

After noticing that the front of the car looked a bit high, I investigated underneath with a flashlight and found that the stupid tech forgot to remove the shipping spacers in my springs. Jacked it up, knocked them out myself. Took all of 10 mins.

Almost to 5000 miles, so it's almost time for oil change numero uno. They're free at my dealership, which is nice.

I almost ran out of gas the other day...got down to 0 miles on the tank, with 291 miles traveled. Wow. Couldn't believe I didn't run out. Was a little scary, but I'm happy to say everything's fine.

I still haven't fixed the marring my dealership put into my paint. I'll hopefully get that taken care of within the next month or so...it'd be real nice to have a glassy, smooth exterior again. I've just been so lazy. Damn winter.

Well, I did it. I had a small accident today. It had been snowing here all night and the roads were icy. I was turning a corner coming into work and slid into a curb *OUCH*. My mechanic has looked at it and so far the right side sway bar is going to have to be replaced along with the wheel and ball bearing. Hopefully that will be all the damage and the frame is still in line.

I thought it would be a good idea to purchase a radar detector, just in case. After some research I found that the Beltronics 955 was supposedly the best deal. It has been good so far. It definitley works...it has alerted me several times to radar beams before I am able to see a PC or anything. I haven't been on an extended highway outing yet, so I'll see how it does then.

10k Service (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

Changed the oil today, at 10,002 miles, used Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil, 5W-40. Rotated the tires, cleaned/waxed the wheels while they were off. Removed the front fender liners, cleaned out a bunch of excess leaves and washed the fender liners. It's weird that the rear fender liners are a fabric-type material, while the fronts are plastic.

Interior/Exterior Cleaning (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

Finally cleaned the interior of the R, it was dying for a vacuum and interior cleaning. Washed the leather surfaces with Meguairs Vinyl & Leather Cleaner and followed with a treatment of Meguairs Leather Conditioner.

When I washed the exterior I tried out this trick I learned from the guys at VW Vortex to use Quick Detailing spray during the drying phase. I wasn't exactly impressed with the results (there was supposed to be less water spots, but I noticed more the next day), but then again by the time I was drying the R, it was dark outside.

Completed the Cold Air Intake that I've been working on for almost the last month. Using 3" stainless steel tubing and an ITG 3" Cone filter, incorperating Siliconeintakes.com couplers. The butt dyno gives it the thumbs up!

New license plate (TR MkV, Owner: Chris Kennedy)

Finally got a new license plate for the R. I had been using my old one from the GTI, so it didn't exactly make sense... "FLYN-GTI."

Now it says "LVE2DRV." Not only does it fit, but when I eventually switch daily drivers (not for a long time), it'll still be appropriate.

I'm not even slightly tired of the R. I recently cleaned the leather with Einszett Leather Care cleaner/conditioner and it really, really maintains the finish and scent of the original leather. No shininess here! I highly recommend it.

Clear Side Markers (UG MkV, Owner: Frank Johnson-Suglia)

Installed the clear side markers and yellow bulbs today. Looks better than the stock yellow lenses. The install was easy. Left side can be removed from within the engine bay. The right side was a bit more difficult and required removal of two screws holding the well well fairings on.

Well it had to happen, my first fender bender. I wasn't even in the car. My friend's uncle backed up into the car. He dented the driver door and the left rear panel. It looks like She's going to need lots of bodywork. Not good.

Did the Flapper mod today. Very easy and the car sounds better. Next mod will be clear side markers and then possibly the Haldex unit. Looking forward to the end of the break in period. Currently at 550 miles.

Marring (TR MkV, Owner: Chris Kennedy)

So I took the car in to the dealer last Friday (the 9th) to have it detailed. They offered it for free, so why not?

Yeah, I guess their idea of a detailing team is to give some yutz a buffer and say "have fun." My paint is seriously marred. I don't trust them to fix it, so I'll be doing it myself.

In case you're wondering what "marring" is, it's the spider web-looking "scratches" in the paint you can only see when the light's directly on it. It's a result of bad polishing/waxing.

Hopefully one of these days will be somewhat warmer and I can go out there and take care of it.

HPA CVP Install (almost), 8,100 miles (TR MkV, Owner: Neil C)

This weekend we started (friend Charles and me) the install of HPA's CVP which arrived Tuesday. The CVP requires that the fuel rail be replaced in order for the CVP to fit (the intake for the fuel line points up and won't clear the CVP). Well it appears that we were sent the fuel rail for an '04 .:R32. Sent HPA an email and will see how they handle. HPA is not due back into the office until Tuesday.

After the CVP I foresee a cold air intake, followed by cams, then exhaust, finally software to tie them together. I am aggressively targeting 320 crank horsepower…think I’ll get there? Email me and let me know!

I saw today that HPA increased their turbo package prices-FT400 is $17,500 and FT450 is $21,000 (up from $ 13,500). I guess those HPA mods are gonna have to wait even a little longer--ridiculous.

Spacers...grrrrrgh (TR MkV, Owner: Chris Kennedy)

Found out yesterday that I still had the shipping spacers on my front springs, even after my dealer assured me they'd be removed for the PDI.

Used the widowmaker last night after getting home from work to lift the car, yanked off the spacers, and voila. Just gotta let the springs settle as they've been at an unnatural height for so long...over 1200 miles. Dammit!

I have searched several sites on the web re: upgrades, and thusfar I am leaning towards HPA. Hit 1000 miles today. Normally this'd be a milestone and essentially permission to let 'er rip, but I've already been doing that. Oops. There's conflicting "research" into both break-in "methods," with no one method being proven best...even though VW recommends waiting for the big 1K. Oh well.

KW's are finally on (CW MkV, Owner: Jonathan Lee)

Got the KW's put on they ride awesome except for one thing. The 19"s will not fit with the suspension on the car, with no one in the car you can get a piece of paper between the fender and the wheel. Someone in the car and the wheel sits on the inside of the fender.

I finally completed my aluminum mirror caps that started life as a set of chrome mirror caps available from VW. I added a black stripe to the inside of the mirror to take away any glare at night or during very sunny days.

This week was an interesting one. DATR on Sunday, Jury duty all this past week. Delegating tires for the wheels during the course of the week between court proceeding sessions. I finally had the wheels installed on the car. They rub a little on hard bumps, but damn they look F'n HAWT!!

A good and yet disappointing day all together. Good from the standpoint of taking 3rd place in the watercooled drag category. Disappointing from the standpoint of the R32 doing a 16.4sec 1/4 mile time. By some coincidence someone video taped a segment where I ran the 1/4 mile in my R32.

Baby's first day out (CW MkV, Owner: Jonathan Lee)

Who da thunk the R32's first day out would put almost 100 miles on it. The day after the Daft Punk concert here in Denver (frickin awesome time!). I had intentionally taken the full day off after the concert to recoup, but instead was used to take the new born out for a drive with it's elder. Taking it to Estes Park, Colo and to the top of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National park.

The power loss at that high of an altitude just over 12,000' was very minimal

Very impressed with the day's work we returned to Denver for the day, but not before having lunch.

D-day (delivery day) (CW MkV, Owner: Jonathan Lee)

The Saturday before I had received a phone call from my area truck distributor that a load of R32's had arrived and a packing slip for my dealer was contained on it. I was ecstatic to know I'd be picking up my R32 that Monday. That morning at work it was as usual, checking in customers VW's for service then I see my roommate (also a technician at work) run past the door to the service drive. There was the truck with my car loaded on the very ass end of it. All I could say was "WOW". Covered very minimally in PDI tape. Immediately I had the car PDI'd and took it out for it's first drive. Afterward had the car detailed. Later in the day, had all the paper taken care of and drove it home. Leaving behind my 06 GLI to be traded in. Thus was the beginning the life of the "OFFSPRING"

R32 Manuals arrived (UG MkV, Owner: Craig Beyers)

Finally! The R32-specific manuals arrived Thursday via FedEx. As anticipated, they're GTI manuals with additional R32 supplements. They've been useful already in helping us understand the MFD and explaining the Climatronic options. I washed the car last weekend (Meguiar's products) and got most of the brake dust off the wheels. The VW manuals recommend a wheel wax and consensus seems to be that American [Racing Wheels] Wheel Wax is the best choice. We understand the nav system better, so it's a little easier and faster to use. The car has about 600 miles and I'm getting eager to punch it!

Even though I'm at fewer than 500 miles, I gave the launch control a good run-in yesterday. Very impressive. I'm anxious to give it a few more tries after the engine's had more time to break in.

I know I need to take a photo and put it up here, but I'd prefer to wait until I've given the car a good wash/polish/wax job. It looks great now, but I can't wait to see Tornado Red with a just-cured polish/wax job with my ROB.

Turns out the seat "lock" mechanisms weren't positioned correctly. Little silver bits in the floor rail needed to be slid fore while the seat was forward. That got 'em, so now I have memory again. Yay!

Sunroof Wind Deflector and Radar Detector Wires (TR MkV, Owner: Neil C)

Installed the sunroof wind deflector and hid the power wires leading to the radar detector.
The sun roof deflector went in easyish with NO HOLES to drill. The package from my VW Dealer ($88 w/tax) indicated it was for a Jetta four door and was too flat (no curve to follow the roof line). Included were two Phillips screws w/seats to protect the contact area between the Lexan like material of the deflector and the top of the Philips head, two metal brackets, plastic mounting clips that attached to the underside of the brackets, which were really just nipples to grip the bottom of the screw.
The brackets attached to the inside of the sunroof between the pop up deflector and the car. They hold to the roof using tension between the curving of the deflector and are attached by the Phillips screws. Total install time including clean up was 30 minutes.
Looks great! The Lexan, when bolted in, conformed to the curve of the roof. The door seal material, attached to the leading lip of the shield between the car and the shield, matches the rest of the car. While in motion the shield changes the interior of the car with the roof open and the windows down. The wind is now docile and doesn’t blast you with air (even at 100mph plus). Now it’s easier to have a conversation with the widows down at highway speeds.

The radar detector cord for my new 9500i from Escort was another issue. The new location for the radar detector is just under the rear view mirror toward the driver’s side. The mute button was installed just above the “not an ashtray” (NAA) space. I got the install cord with the blue led and the color/location matches the interior just fine, but the led is way too bright (just like the last one I had). I will fix that later.
The dash is 80% screws and 20% snap clips. Only damage suffered while disassembling the dash was the top of the steering column, which is; the top part that spans from the turn signal stalk to the wiper stalk; the vinyl between the column; and the plastic piece at the bottom of the instruments, are all one piece. On the top piece, which has two posts with snap clips just below the instruments, I broke one of the posts off. Have to order/price that one at the dealer sometime. :(
The cord was routed from the radar, around the rear view mount a couple of times (in case the suctions cups give way the cord will keep the radar from crashing to the floor) and was literally stuffed between the roof line and the windshield until it reached the B pillar. At the B pillar I didn’t have to remove the fabric covered trim, but did have to be careful to route it around the air bag.
I disassembled the lower part of the dash, steering column, shifter trim piece that surrounds the shifter, and the NAA with ESP switch to route the cord to the center of the dash just above the NAA. There is a trim panel just above the NAA that is rarely seen (unless you look up from the floor board) but is easily removed. I allowed the cord to run from the between the back of the NAA and the panel above sandwiching the wire between the two. Velcro on the panel above the NAA was used to mount the switch. I am going to need a different solution because the Velcro sticky backing has failed once from the heat already.
Assembly was the reverse of installation. All the screws on the dash are the same except for the three screws for the steering wheel.
AVIC-D3 and associated hardware are planned for the next install. The CVP intake from HPA is still pre-ordered and I am told mid September before its released.
2,500 miles and counting!!! My cheeks are sore from smiling!!!

General update 7,600 miles (TR MkV, Owner: Neil C)

Its been a bit so I’ll give an update.

AVIC D3 is in with Bluetooth and XM NavTraffic. All work as expected even with the install I did myself.

First oil change occurred at 4,500 mile. Mobile One 0W40 and NAPA Gold filter. Supplies for two changes $76. Have to remove the plastic shield to do the change. No big surprises.

Sparky now has 7,600+ mile from a 3,000+ mile round trip to Phoenix and back. Seats were great even when the roads were not. She did the trip in two days (had a three year old with me) between 75 and 85 mph. MPG was 23-25 even with mountains. Navi was a life saver in Phoenix especially knowing where the wrecks were and how traffic was flowing. Only damage found was a nick to the windshield. Had to happen some time.

Still waiting on the intake.

Noticed that GIAC has their software available so its just time before that mod occurs.

So I had my first to-work commute today. And boy, was that nice. The car is so comfortable and quiet, and usable power all over the place. And that transmission!

One thing I'm disappointed in: No compass! What the hell? Also, my seats aren't working properly. They aren't remembering their fore-aft slide position when I pop them up to allow rear entry and exit.

Delivery (TR MkV, Owner: Chris Kennedy)

Took delivery of the .:R today. Was a long, arduous process that involved a lot of bargaining and bartering. Finally was able to trade in the old 06 GTI and ended up with a 19750 difference. I think I did pretty well with the price.

On a related note, the guys up at Greenbrier VW are great. My salesman, Charlie Roy, was a joy to work with, even if he did have a locked up knee. I called him "hopalong," but not to his face. I don't think he'd mind the nickname.

It'll be so nice to have a more-comfortable, GT-style car with a transmission that can shift itself for the commute. More info to come.

Car wash after big road trip (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

Finally got around to washing my dirty as hell car today, it was super dirty after the 4k mile road trip.

Whenever I wash the car, I put the wipers in service mode so they can be hinged away from the window, well my R outsmarted me this time because I popped the hood before attempting to put the wipers in service mode. After checking the wiper fuse (under the hood) and getting all freaked out because my wipers weren't working, I finally realized that the wipers will not operate if the hood is open. D'oh! I hate it when my car is smarter than me.

TX to CA Road Trip Complete (mileage: 7133) (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

I returned home from my 8-day road trip to Sacramento and back this morning (3am). I had a blast with the R32 the entire time, it proved to be an excellent road trip car. Seats were very comfortable even during long drives (800+ miles). Never had a single problem. MPG improved greatly after the first oil change. On the last day I drove nearly 1000 miles and my average for that duration was 27.3 MPG!

Cross Country Road Trip (mileage: 2,889) (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

I left Austin, TX on Wednesday October 10th 2007 with 2,889 miles on the odometer and headed for Sacramento, CA. Took smaller roads most of the way, up through north-west Texas into Alberquerque on Interstate 40. Headed north out of Flagstaff, AZ and into the Grand Canyon and onward to St. George, UT. From there I headed through Nevada on Hwy 50 (a very fun drive), and kept on 50 through South Lake Tahoe right down into Sacramento. 1,995 miles later I am now in Sacramento.

1st tank of gas! (UG MkV, Owner: Craig Beyers)

Filled up Saturday with the first tank of gas...271 miles, 12.082 gallons...works out to 22.4 mpg. Not bad for the first tank...but I'm taking it cool as it's still getting used to running. I can tell it's freeing up; it just sound looser and freer. I've got a better feel for how the inside mirror switches between daylight and night operation. It just isn't as dark as a manual mirror and switches back and forth at night when it's dark behind the car...interesting. I've noticed that all the wheels seem to have streaks on them...it appears to be brake dust...LOTS of it. If anyone reading this knows what's up, I'd appreciate a reply (I'll check VWVortex). We're also getting used to the nav system...actually making it do what we want ...a little playing around has helped. I'm really enjoying the car....and so are many of the folks in the office, who are enjoying its sound. One guy said "I knew it was different when I saw the two tailpipes". I almost had to stop him drooling .

Performed my oil change today, I'm using Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40 (also known as Mobil Delvac 1). Yes this oil is 100% fine for the R32 engine. I use this oil in my diesels and like it very much.

I know there are a lot of people that don't like window tint, and those who do, I fall in to the later category. Today I had 35% installed on the sides, and 20% on the back window. This is considered "legal" in WA state, so I went with that. I figure a bright blue R will do a good enough job attracting unwanted attention - no reason to give the Police more reasons to pull me over.

1st Night Drive (UG MkV, Owner: Craig Beyers)

First night drive tonight...not sure that the auto dimming mirror is working properly (but this care is my 1st time with this kind of mirror). The xenon's are awesome--almost as good as (from the old days!) my BMW 2002 with 7" 110-watt H4s and 7" Marchal driving lights with 110w H1 bulbs. Light color is "clean white" and the light spread is excellent across the road on low beams. On highs, the top of the light pattern opens up and there's plenty of light down the road. I drove from Centreville into Clifton, then from Clifton back toward southern Fairfax County on winding roads. As I told my wife, I drove at 4/10s to 5/10s, since I haven't seen these roads in 10 years and am still learning the car's capabilities. But...even staying in D (no paddles!) and taking it cool, this was easily the smoothest, not-quite-fast drive on these roads. The car's amazing...and the wife still likes the ride, the seats (which she says are "very comfortable"), and the Nav system. She even likes "Alice's" voice, Alice being, of course the nice lady in the Nav system.

Took delivery today (UG MkV, Owner: Craig Beyers)

Last night, after driving a GTI--and attempting to drive an R32 (and failing) --we decided to trade in my 2000 2.SL0 Jetta on the R32. We took delivery of a United Gray R32 this morning--#541--from Stohlman VW in Tysons Corner, VA. Stohlman's has a Deep Blue Pearl R32, but it's too visible for me....same with Candy White and Tornado Red cars. The United Gray is just stealthy enough, I hope ! The hard part today was keeping out of the throttle and being just gentle enough for an easy break-in. I keep cars for a long time, so I can be patient.

Flapper Mod (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

Did the flapper mod today. I opted for the simple route, which involves a lengthy process of removing the vacuum line that feeds the flapper, plugging it with a screw and pushing the vacuum line back into the hole it comes out of so that the screw head just barely pokes out.

Never has a 1 minute job yields such a :D

2000 mi so far so good. The car is really fun to drive. only probs were with the blower moter, the plug was not connected correctly, down for 1 day with an o7 jetta as a loner. And the only other thing is that the back of this car gets filthy.... Ive probably washed it 20 times so far...

Limits (CW MkV, Owner: Greg Kendall)

The weather was so nice today 78 and sunny I had to take a drive! I drove a road that parallels the Blue Ridge Mountains on top of them. It’s mostly wooded and has some great curves on it. It hugged every turn at twice the posted limit and still had room to go faster. This car is so more then just a 0-60 car! I love this car the more I push its limits!

Beautiful fall day in Wisconsin (DBP MkV, Owner: Jim Hull)

The weather here has been absolutely fantastic the last few days. sunny, 75 degrees, not a cloud in the sky, the trees are turning gold, red and yellow. I'm gonna give the R a nice wash and take a spin in the country. Might head for the Mississippi river road. Its a fantastic road that follows the river up to Minneapolis. I won't go that far but maybe to the LaCrosse area. The ride to the river is great too. Once you get west of Madison Wis. it gets real hilly and twisty....

MPG Getting Better (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

After 2,500 miles of consistently getting 18.8 MPG, I've finally started to see that number go up. When I filled up this weekend I discovered that I averaged 21 MPG which equated to 270 miles out of a tank instead of the typical 225 I've been getting. That's pretty cool.

Picked up some Monster Mats today and promptly replaced my factory mats with these awesome mats. Set of four, uses the R logo as the primary grip pattern and my favorite thing is they don't look all "heavy-duty" style like all the other Monster Mats I've seen.

Driving Impresssions (UG MkV, Owner: Luke Asbury)

I put 360 miles on the car in 6 hours last Saturday - a lot of it on Highway 58 between Santa Margarita (off the 101) and Highway 33 (58 is good road, check it out but be sure you have a full tank of gas). I was comfortably doubling the posted corner speeds - 40MPH at 80-90 etc. I also managed to get it loose - finally! In a drift, it is neutral and is quite controllable, no surprises.

More info on launch delay (UG MkV, Owner: Luke Asbury)

It seems that the EMC puts the car in neutral when I come to a stop with my foot on the brake. When the light changes, I take my foot off the brake and gas it - producing a 1-2 second lag before accelerating, because the car is in neutral and the computer has to tell the transmission to engage the gears. (This is not noticable in "normal" driving in either standard or sport modes).

The way around this is to stop the same way, and when you have come to a stop, pull on the handbrake and take your foot OFF the brake pedal. When the light changes, release the handbrake and gas it - resulting in instant acceleration, no lag, just go.

When I drove little over 1000miles, I changed oil then I felt car got little smoother. And now R32 reaches 2500miles without any problem.

On the way to a friends house, following a truck, a rock kicked up and gashed the front bumper under the right headlight. Saw it as i ws changing out my clear sidemarkers for smoked ones.

Cracked windshield (DBP MkV, Owner: jerry carnes)

I had my r32 for 4 hours, and my windshield was hit by a rock, and a small crack appeared. Luckily its smaller than a quarter (barely) and i can have it fixed for 40 bucks. I was also wandering about the HPA generation 2 haldex controller. is it plug and play or is there more to it, i don't know much about tuning cars, so i was wandering if someone could post instructions on how to install one, maybe some photos too.

Got clear sidemarkers on the new R. Planned to do the flapper mod, but when I was under the car I saw that the tube was already out. Flapper mod complete!

Lag in Drive mode (DBP MkV, Owner: Jerry Pastore)

That doesn't sound right, Luke. I don't experience any lag whatsoever in Drive, Sport or DSG mode. When you bring it in for service, mention it to the dealer again if the problem doesn't go away.

I also have a chipped 2006 MKV GTi putting out about 260HP and 300TQ and the R32 feels so much better to drive. I can't wait for VF Engineering to come out with their new supercharger for the new R32. I'm going to be first in line for that item.

Throttle Response (UG MkV, Owner: Luke Asbury)

I checked with one of the Service Managers as Santa Monica VW and found that my throttle response problem was "operator error". In the standard "drive" mode the computer is looking for a gentle start; if this is not the case and I floor it, it gets "confused" and remaps the engine management computer which explains the lag. All I have to do is put it in the "sport" mode, which changes the engine management. When I hit the gas, it just goes - now. Starting from the
"drive" position and moving the shift lever to the right engages the Tiptronic mode which has the same mapping as the sport mode but requires that the driver use the paddles to shift. It's "all better" now that I know how it works!

as mentioned by another R32er, it is true that the audio system included with nav does NOT handle mp3 cd's. also my salesperson insisted that the non-nav system sounds better. it sounded awfully good to me. during our 650 mile road trip I made the acquaintance of satellite radio. I think it is great if you have a co-pilot to keep changing stations for you, but it could be a distraction if you are constantly channel surfing while driving. As for nav - - I have been using a portable system for quite a while . . why would anyone want it built in? it is just as brain dead as the former built-in cell phone systems that nobody buys anymore. I move my nav with me from car to car and take it on vacation with me. no need for "never lost" and its ilk. save the money and spend about $400~$700 on a great portable. you will never look back

sample photo is quite accurate. that could well be my car. we have logged San Francisco to Portland so far. What a pleasure! incredible braking, no fatigue. Unlike my previous 2005 TT 3.2/dsg you do not have to fight the steering wheel. Not a "boy racer", but a gentleman cruiser, and yes, a racer when you throw the pedal down. Which I am trying not to do in the first 1K miles so I don't create an oil burner. Right now only about 23.5 on the highway, but I suspect this will rise to about 28 which is what my TT 3.2 did after break in.

Nav System (DBP MkV, Owner: Jerry Pastore)

Just got my car with all-season tires and also managed to avoid getting the $1,800 nav system. Had VW put in a VW iPod adaptor in the glove box for $294 instead. For those of you who aren't aware of it, the nav system, in addition to having only one CD slot, is also incompatible with mp3 files. If you like to burn mp3 CDs, you will not be able to play them in the nav system. Also, the iPod adaptor in the center console that comes with the nav system also eliminates the port that could be used for an external CD changer, so you're stuck with only one CD slot forever. If you really don't need or want the nav, try to find a car without it and save the money for some mods.

Window, Halogen and Seatbelt Warning Mod (DBP MkV, Owner: Justin Perkins)

Yet another day of mods! Today I got the center halogens working when you use the "flash to pass" and high beam modes. Before that, those halogen beams on the inside of the headlights would never light up.

I also can open/close the windows with the remote!

And no more annoying seatbelt warning bell!!!

Driving Impresssions (UG MkV, Owner: Luke Asbury)

The car is SOLID - no body flex at all. It simply goes from point A to point B extremely quickly and without any fuss. In the 300+ miles I put on it this weekend, I could not get it loose in the twisties. It is that good. I am not happy with the lack of road feel through the steering (steer by wire) and there is a hesitation when starting off - poor throttle response. These are the only negative things I have found, everything else about the car is exceptional.

Just talked to my dealer to make sure that they don't drill any holes in my front bumper. He wasn't sure if it would come pre-drilled or not, but assured me that if it arrived with no holes in the bumper, I would get it with no holes in the front bumper.

Ordered a 2008 DBP R32 loaded with all (2)options. At this point it's only a twinkle in some German robots eye. The gestation period for this model is approx. 6 months and should arrive in my driveway in late August.
