CycleCraft's New Supercross Pro Rachel Bracken

When it was announced that Team CycleCraft would be picking up Supercross racer Rachel Bracken they asked me to write a press release about this amazing athlete. However, the Supercross fans spent all of last year watching this girl compete at the highest level so I thought it would also be cool to give her a interview. Here we really get to know who she is and what she hopes to accomplish as the newest member of the team.

Rachel Bracken of Townsville, Australia is 21 years old and has been riding BMX for thirteen years. She took to the sport at an early age after watching her brother Luke ride at the local track. She quickly became addicted to racing and she excelled at it. She made the Australian Team several times, competed at the Australian Championships and the BMX World Championships. However, all of her early victories were merely a precursor of greater things to come.

Her commitment to BMX was fortified when it was added to the 2008 Olympic Games in Bejing, China.

"I've always wanted to go to the Olympics ever since BMX was added and I knew that the only way to get there was to race Supercross. So I had to face my fears and give it a go. I had a lot of support from my family and friends which helped my confidence too."

In no time at all she had graduated to the big track. In the last two years alone, Rachel has raced all over the world.

When I asked which races really made an impact on her she was modest in her answer, "At the 2010 World Titles at South Africa I didn't win, I got 6th but it is still a very memorable race for me. It was my first year as an Elite rider and I beat all my expectations by making the final. And I still remember 2007 National Titles I came from way behind in the last corner to take the win on the finish line."

While her successes on the track have been a blessing, she has also had her share of painful lessons, "I've been a bit unlucky with injuries lately. In August of last year I crashed at the London Olympic Test Event, tore 4 ligaments and done severe bone bruising. Before Christmas I had another crash which badly bruised my knee. I've also broken both elbows, had surgery on my elbow, broken my wrist and split my chin open."

As for her new team, Rachel is thrilled about the opportunity, "I'm very excited to be riding for CycleCraft this year! I haven't had a chance to ride a CycleCraft yet but I really like the color choices."

With the Olympics looming Rachel knows what kind of odds she is up against but she remains optimistic, "I definitely want to go to the Olympics this year but I still need to recover from my injuries and get back on my bike full time. I have a lot of competition in Australia and we're all desperate to get to the Olympics so it won't be easy."

We all wish Rachel a speedy recovery, good luck with her new team and hopes for a great start to the critical 2012 Season.

SSA Proposes USA BMX Summit Assistance

USA BMX is hosting their first BMX Summit February 23-25, 2012 in Louisville Kentucky. The Sunshine State BMX Association would like all the Florida Track Operators to attend so we are offering up to Two Hundred and Fifty dollar ($250.00) maximum reimbursement for travel, per track to attend.

Charlotte Multi-Point Weekend Results (Part 2 of 2)

The first USA BMX Florida State Qualifier of the season took place this Sunday as part of the Charlotte BMX Multi-Point Weekend. The numbers stayed steady as 200+ riders blasted out of the gate in 47 motos. A heavy practice trend in the morning was quickly followed by a well behaved parade lap and at 10:57am the racing began!

In the Opens we saw Expert rider Jackson Gentry of Oldsmar take the 7-8 year old class. In the mixed Open Justis Sisk landed a huge upset as he fought off favorite Shawn Lefrense and Jacksonville's Zane Headrick for the win.

The 15 Girls Class had a full gate. When they were barreling down the first straight it looked like there was twelve of them! At the front of the pack was hard working Rebecca McKenzie from Avon Park, on her heels was local rider Chealsea Adams and coming in third was the Atomic Phenom Madison Walter. Justis Sisk had an amazing day with a Win in the Opens!

The 10 year old Cruiser main had a moment of fright as Colby Loy soared over the first jump as one foot came unclipped. After a miraculous landing he clipped back in and tore down the second straight with a vengeance. Colby won the race by 8 lengths!

37 year old Mike Powers had his work cut out for him as he fended of two fierce 15 year olds in the Cruiser main. North Fort Myer's Ben Bryson and Miami's Preston Woods were setting fire to clay as they tried everything humanly possible to pass "Mr. Consistent." In the end Mike put them in their place with Woods taking second and Bryson third.

15 X had a stacked moto full of Talent

Donald Navis of Lakeland, Florida must have figured out the tricks being used by Peyton "Shrek" Read because he wasn't falling for them on this day. Navis took possession of the top spot with well planned tactics and forced the big green monster into second place.

16 Novice seemed to be a clear cut race until the lead rider Brennan Sweeney slipped a pedal on the final straight. Cale Sparks of St. Augustine saw the fumble and started closing the gap. Brennan quickly regained his footing and took the win. Nice Save!

Last but not least we want to give a shout out to our new friends from Oldsmar. In particular was the family team NKRT (Nose Kase Racing Team) - Ryan Nenno 13x, Trey Curry 13 I, Ryder Curry 11 I, Aiden Hueholt 10x, Arthur Fishel 8 I and Tate Mucha 7x. This was their first time at Charlotte BMX. They wrote to me after returning home, "Thanks so much!! We had a great time!!! Loved your track!"

Overall it was a very successful weekend. Track president Amanda Carr was thrilled with the turnout and the hard work of so many people, "Big shout out to the whole Charlotte Bmx crew and all the volunteers!!! Everyone was so fun to work with and we put on a great show! Could not have done this without all of your help, hats off to you all! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

Charlotte Multi-Point Weekend Results (Part 1 of 2)

The first Redline Cup of the year for the state of Florida happened this weekend at Charlotte BMX. 217 riders gathered into 49 motos for some clean, fun racing action. Charlotte was especially happy to see so many riders from Oldsmar and Riverview, many were visiting this neck of the woods for the first time.

Everybody's favorite sponsors were on hand for parts, repairs, food and drinks. Thanks to Smoothie King, J&R Bicycles, Capt'n Bob's Pizza and the Punta Gorda Hot Dog lady. Plus we had the comical musings of the Amanda/Kelly show where Amanda Carr and Kelly Doan took turns on the mic calling the races. In addition the heat never passed 80 degrees and the mains took place in a nice settled shade.

What do riders do in comfortable weather?

They race harder!

Some girls are just unstoppable. If I remember correctly all of these girls posted wins only a week ago in Naples: Richelle and Esja Shriver, Campbell Lackey and Rebecca O'Connor.

Also, did my eyes deceive me or did I see Intense/Monster colors on Rebecca O'Connor and her brother Joey (Who also won his Main)?

16 Expert was the place for excitement. The men's main was lead by Kody Wong until Favio Mojica used his slickness to steal the win, the whole time we saw Shane Hall sitting on their heels and ultimately finishing third. The Girls main ended quickly as Kendra Stoddard came unclipped just after the first jump. Amanda Schaaf, who had a great gate, pulled way ahead to win the contest. But don't feel bad for Kendra, she aced the Girls Cruiser race with a solid victory.

Team MCS's 8 year old wonder boy Eric Clark was ready for action. Only a week a ago he took back to back victories at the Naples Qualifiers. Today at the Redline Cup he continued his winning streak on both 20" and Cruiser. The only rider able to give him a fight was Evan Schaefer of Peddlers Racing who took second.

Peyton "Shrek" Read made Charlotte BMX his adopted track and Saturday he got the chance to show that he knows all of Charlotte's tricks. Despite terrible gates in the first moto and main, Shrek cut tight in the first corner and passed all of his opponents on the second straight. After the big man got in the lead there was now way to pass him. Shrek took the win!

Team Atomic Racing brought a small squadron of riders bearing the colors of purple and gold. They made their presence known in many motos but most impressive were the wins posted by Madison Walters, Wesley Harnage and Tyler Harnage. Madison won on her 20" and took second on Cruiser. Tyler won against kids with nicknames like "The Beast" and the "The Hawk". Even more incredible was the 10 Intermediate class where Team Atomic BMX took the top three spots with Kade Moscatello in 1st, Wesley Harnage 2nd and Joe Bongiorno 3rd!

Winners to Watch For

With two hundred riders passing before our eyes it takes something special for a New Rider to snap into view. Having said that, these kids posted wins at the Redline Cup and all of them made the crowd take notice - Juan Vargas of Lehigh Acres, Logan Hair of Oldsmar and Jesse Zivkovic of Palm Harbor.

Local riders were able to use the Hometrack advantage with spectacular results, these included Shawn Lefresne, Logan Hill, Jada Webb, Dusty Hertenlehner and "The Buffalo" John Perez Dunn.

While Charlotte might have been hoping for a larger crowd, I was told that 49 motos is a huge gathering for a Florida Redline Cup (Last year there were only 33 motos). The race was well run with no major incidents, very few crashes and plenty of impressive finishes.

Morphine Industries Signs Ryan DeRoche

We spent some time adding a few select riders to the Morphine roster during the 2011 season. However, when the “after Grands” frenzy of rider shopping and team jumping started we couldn’t resist adding a cherry to the top. When the stars align you got to take the opportunity. …and the opportunity came in the way of ripper, 17-18x Ryan Deroche.

Ryan hails from the Atlanta area where Morphine has grabbed quite a few of its crew (DB100, Charlie, JRev). Ryan has been a podium contender at every race in 17-18x and in Jr.Men and finished NAG 6 in the NBL last season. With his skill, power and determination, we have no doubt that Ryan will shoot right to the top of his class in USA BMX's 17-18 Expert class.

We are stoked to have Ryan join the crew. He has already started to set himself apart by receiving an invite for the next training camp held in January at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. CycleCraft Reveals their Colors at the Naples Qualifiers

Allison Marchese swept Naples with 1st Place Finishes

Team Cyclecraft have revealed their new Jerseys and Plates for the 2012 season as their riders braved the Florida cold at the Naples Qualifiers. The Jersey's were made by Riderz Ready, a company that has surged to the top of the ladder as makers of custom apparel.

CycleCraft was looking for an almost retro design, this brilliant splash of colors including the well known CC symbol surrounded all of the team's sponsors with their respective logos. Riderz ready knew exactly how to handle the challenge. With experience and creativity they came up with the new design and the team proudly displayed them as they wowed the crowds at Naples BMX.

Top scorers included the 9 year old "Tiny Might" McKenzie Gayheart who won her 20" inch class on both days. She even took on some bigger girls in the cruiser class. McKenzie was clearly enjoying the weekend as she lead each race with that winning smile.

Thirteen year old Allison Marchese also doubled on the weekend but not without a fight. On some motos she was forced to pedal all the way to the line. These drag races brought the crowd to their feet but Allison came out on top.

Eleven year old Kinley Buelvas showed her grit in a solid field of girls which included the likes of Campbell Lackey and Michaela LaPlatte. Despite the tough competition she took second place on both days and made her team proud.

Another rider deep in the dust of battle was Joey Leto. On both cruiser and his 20" Joey was up against National Champions Kendal Wong and Ritchie Dey among others. Joey was steadfast in his riding and did his best to avoid the occasional carnage completing the weekend on 20" with a 2nd on Saturday and 6th on Sunday. On his Cruiser he scored 4th on Sat and 2nd on Sun.

Thomas Marchese might have got the short end of the stick in Naples. Not only was the 15x class lighting quick but they were also prone to nasty wipe outs. Thomas fought hard but came up one point short of the main on both days. We applaud his valiant efforts.

Shane Hall was the definitive weekend warrior. In the Cruiser class he was swapping elbows with Favio Mojica and Kody Wong creating some of the best matches of the Qualifier. Mojica got him the on the first day but Shane stole back the title winning a Gold Medal on day 2. The 20" Class was nearly the same story. Shane bore down on the top spot and made some bold moves to fight for the front. In the end he took 2nd on Saturday and won another Gold on Sunday. Great weekend for Shane!

Well known racer Bobby Owens was on his game in Naples. He took 2nd place on Saturday but it seemed like a mere warm-up for his big win on Sunday. Not an easy track on which to win but Bobby made it happen. Another Gold Medal for Team CycleCraft.

The toughest position in any race is the middle of the pack. Kody Garrett spent his time trying to break through the maze of pedals and bar ends in the Seventeen Expert Class. He fought the good fight and landed in 4th on Saturday and 6th on Sunday.

Last but not least was 46-50 Cruiser Patrick Deats. Patrick enjoyed a headwind most of the weekend as he split the air at the front of the pack. Day one put him up against Pat Sheridan who edged out a victory leaving Deats in second but on day two he stole the gold.

CycleCraft only brought a small contingent to Naples but they still managed to take third on both days in the Money team competition. In addition they collected six gold medals. Not a bad weekend. Next stop on the calendar is the Florida's first Redline Cup of the year held at Charlotte BMX on Jan 21st.

Florida's Five Racing Districts

Message from USA BMX

As a result of establishing a unified BMX sanctioning body in Florida, we have districts that are bursting at the seams with the number of riders. Therefore, we have chosen to create more districts in Florida to keep the riders excited about battling for that lower earned number each season.

USA BMX will take care of moving the riders into their appropriate district once the 2011 points are finalized. At that time, new USA BMX membership cards will be sent to the riders, and we will be sending another email with a current membership update that will reflect these changes.

The Naples Qualifiers (Part 2 of 2)

The sun found its way back to South Florida and boy did we need it. The day started at 30 degrees but the warming rays slowly brought us to 70 in the afternoon. That slow rise in heat provided perfect weather for day two of the SSA Qualifiers in Naples. The crowds returned as well with 489 riders in 89 motos of racing action.

The Pro races were far more difficult to predict on day 2. There were strong showings from Dennison, Caldwell, Riddell, CJ, Eli and even Larry Dardini. Mike Caldwell's win on day one made it seem like anything was possible so everyone was going for broke.

With anticipation at its height the crowd watched the riders on the gate when suddenly Mike Caldwell got off his bike. His tire was low. They held the gate as Jeff Hughes rushed to the hill with a pump. When they got underway it was a drag race to the first turn where Intense/Monster's returning Pro C.J. MaGuire kicked in the afterburners. CJ took the lead spot and never let it go. When he crossed the finish line it was more a statement of fact - CJ is Back!

Best Match of the Day

Kendal Wong vs Ritchie Dey

Boxing fans wonder what it would look like if Floyd Mayweather finally fought Manny Pacquiao. They are the two best, fastest, small men in their sport. It would be a match of epic proportions. This weekend we got to see the BMX version of this fight between Kendal Wong and Ritchie Dey.

The battle was especially poignant during the Mains on Sunday. In the cruiser race Kendal held the lead for the entire lap until the last corner where Ritchie slyly cut wide and drove Kendal up the wall and off his bike. Ritchie crossed the line without challenge. Kendal slowly got up from the crash and appeared livid as he rolled across the line in last place.

In the 20 inch race, Kendal was out for revenge. He took the lead again but this time he wasn't letting Ritchie get anywhere near him. When they reached the final corner Ritchie took another strong turn but this time he got wobbled by a different rider. Ritchie was thrown off his game. Kendal won and Ritchie rolled in at last place. These two are riveting to watch, they are friendly competitors and we will see more of their battles in the future.

Announcement of Good News

Caleb Minthorn has been with Profile Racing since he was 6 years old. He is sixteen now. That is ten years supporting the same team. At the Naples Qualifier Profile brought Caleb out before the crowd to thank him for his hard work and dedication to Profile Racing.

Announcement of Bad News

We also had to hear the news that longtime Team MCS BMX racer and champion Raul Gomez had been diagnosed with Cancer. Raul told everyone of his determination to beat this disease on Facebook the night before,

"WTF cancer/lymphoma, whatever your name is, who do you think you are coming into this body of mine! You're not welcome nor wanted here!! Don't even think about getting comfy, you are messing with the wrong mofo...in a couple of weeks me and my boy chemo are coming to kick your ass...believe that!!! You're just like another race that I will WIN and cross that finish line with a big ass smile :) As for my family, bmx family and friends I don't want to get any messages saying sorry to hear that ...all I'm asking is for lots of prayers and positive messages. I WILL WIN THIS RACE!!!"

The BMX community responded immediately by stating that plans are underway to start fundraising . Profile Racing is building a bike that will be raffled off with the proceeds going to help with Raul's oncoming medical expenses. We all love you Raul, you won't have to face this alone, we are all with you.

We all have to remember that no race is perfect, there were some odd calls made at Naples. There were some strange reactions by Officials and Parents alike but overall the weekend went pretty smooth. Terri and I had a fantastic time. We got to see all our friends and filmed many clips in an attempt to give you the most complete Highlight video that we could produce. We hope you enjoy it. The next stop on the SSA train is Okeeheelee, see you all there!

The Naples Qualifiers (Part 1 of 2)

It was a chilly day at the Wheels Skate and BMX facility as 500+ riders from around the state gathered for the second stop on the SSA calendar. Many were adjusting to the minimalist track but enjoyed the carnival atmosphere as a tent city had been built all around the outer gate. Sponsors row was filled with all your favorites - J&R Bicycles, Corsa Racewear, Peddlers Bike Shop, Smoothie King (Try the Rider Recovery), Capt'n Bob's Pizza (Their pizza is killer) and Profile who I heard pimped somebody's ride. That is like winning the BMX lottery. So anyway, on with the race action...

In the very first moto of Pro Racing action a battle card had been launched between two hungry lions - the returning CJ Maguire and the Reigning Dennison Smith. Big Daddy looked to establish the same kind of lead that he took in Jacksonville and he did all the way until the last turn where CJ Mcguire cut the corner and drove him to the top of the berm. Big Daddy went down and CJ took the win (See Video Here). The two of them battled to the line in the second moto. In the third moto we saw CJ pull off first but this time with Justin Riddell on his heels.

All eyes were on CJ and Dennison but the whispers were about another rider - Mike Caldwell. Mike had won a moto of his own displaying his ability to dominate the field. In the main Mike was a picture of perfect control. He took the lead and ignored the hard charging racers desperately reaching for the inches needed to catch him.
In the end he stole the show.

Team Intense/Monster showed up in their New Uniforms

On the Pro Girls side we saw Madison Pitts dominate every moto with ease and walk away with a perfect score for the day.

While the professionals managed to keep themselves upright for most of the races, the amateur ranks were replete with accidents. I started counting crashes but lost track after 25. While Naples is a low, flat track designed for Novice riders, it's angles can be dangerous and people underestimate them. However, some of the best stories can come from crazy crashes...

The absolute best story took place in the 13X main. The two lead racers were battling for position, almost pushing each other off the track when finally one of them went off the side of the rhythm section. Instead of falling down he rolled right into the path of his opponent who had come around the corner. As the two leaders hit the cement so did all of the bikes behind them, except for one.

Rusty Noel of West Palm Beach had been struggling in last place when he saw the mangled mess in the corner so Rusty rode high around the berm, passed the entire group and took the win! He went from last to first in one fell swoop. The audience was astonished. Congrats to Rusty Noel who proved that you should never give up no matter what position you are in.

Rebecca McKenzie takes the Perilous High Road

With the crashes we also saw our share of courage. Shannon Reichel is new to BMX. She is a Professional Surfer who decided to try racing because her son is into it. Shannon had a couple races at her local track and decided to try a Qualifier. Shannon is a gutsy rider but her speed exceeds her bike handling abilities and that made for a scary race day.

In her first moto she was holding second place but went high over the second corner causing her to flip through the air. She landed only inches from my feet, I had to dodge her incoming bike. In the second moto Shannon was bumped by another rider on first jump and they both crashed down the backside of it. You would think she'd be down and out with a swollen knee and groggy recollection but nope, not Shannon. She took third place in both the third moto and the main. It was a rough introduction to the sport but we appreciate her fighting spirit. Hopefully she heals up and sticks with it.

You Never Forget Your First Time

Favio Mojica had never raced on a Cruiser - until this day. He figured, hey why not give it a try? The class he entered was small but strong including the likes of Kody Wong, Shane Hall and Dino Dellanoce. This turned out to be one of the best races of the day. Kody Wong is a ninja on any bike and Shane Hall blasts down a straight like he's got a rocket hidden under his seat.

Despite the natural torque of his competitors, Favio was tactically brilliant in the corners. He was able to squeeze through some tight motos surprising the audience with a definitive win. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of him in the Cruiser division.

The first day ended with cloud cover, heavy sweaters and plenty of skinned elbows. Many riders had gained a new respect for the track. Sparkling blue and gold trophies were handed out as volunteers began grooming the clay for the following day. We had only seen the beginning of what Naples had to offer.

For the first time in the history of BMX - track operators, volunteers, officials and riders alike from both the ABA and NBL will gather to celebrate the unification of the sport and combine the amazing experience of both organizations into one incredible educational event to be held in Louisville, Kentucky at the Marriott Downtown.

The USA BMX 2012 Bicycle Motocross Summit gathers anyone interested in the great sport of BMX to learn more about USA BMX and how to run an exciting and successful BMX program. Participants are treated to outstanding educational seminars and learn how to run USA BMX races, big and small, as well as learn all the ins and outs of BMX racing.

The Summit is the place to interact and share ideas with fellow passionate track operators, officials,

volunteers and BMXers from tracks across North America. There will be knowledgeable speakers on

hand, the USA BMX staff as well as special guest speakers that are sure to motivate all. Additionally,

attendees will be treated to a welcome reception Thursday evening, lunch on Friday and Saturday, and wrap things up with an exciting closing party at Louisville’s 4th Street Live, walking distance from the host hotel.

Oldsmar Prepares for the Gator National

Success often speaks for itself. It was only my second visit to Oldsmar BMX and already I was wishing that I lived a little closer to the track that currently sits at the epicenter of Florida racing. Serious BMX racers can be found on the Tampa Bay circuit on any given weekend, this includes Tampa BMX on Friday night, Riverview BMX on Saturday morning, Oldsmar BMX on Saturday evening and St. Pete BMX on Sunday. At the center of the circuit the biggest crowds are always reserved for Oldsmar BMX.

This visit was a special one for many in the crowd because the hard working Officials at Oldsmar had recently rebuilt the track for the upcoming Gator Nationals on February 10-12, 2012. The Gator Nationals are always a big race but with the collapse of the NBL and the absence of other Nationals in the state, this Gator National could be the biggest one ever! With this in mind Oldsmar went all out in augmenting their course to almost Supercross proportions.

The track is fascinating to behold, it looks absolutely huge. The doubles and the triple step have large rolling lips on them forcing fast riders to take to the air or risk scrubbing speed. Even the table tops are big and the rhythm section is deeper. Two unique features that fascinated the crowd were the Amateur S curve complete with angled rollers and the Pro Set which jumps the Amateur line. Watching the pro riders clear that awesome gap was a spectacle during pre-race practice.

The new build attracted a huge crowd with a hefty dose of former NBL riders. There were 32 motos worth of race action which included ABA Champions Bailey Brannen, Zachary VonBergen and Lori Mascia. I also enjoyed watching the Yokum sisters, Shane Hall, Trinity Ruggieri, Zack Frakes and Joey O'Connor. The practicing elites included Josh Meyers, Eli Weiss, Caleb Minthorn, Larry Dardini and Maliek Byndloss.

So the big question was, what do people think of the new build? 13 X Corsa Racer Robert Fisher gave me his opinion on first glance, "I didn't think they could make it any harder but it looks like they did." Robert suited up, rode the track and I spoke to him again afterwards where his opinion had changed, "Now I wish I had signed up to race."

As of Saturday night the Track Officials were still measuring jumps and gaps. Clearly they were keeping their eyes open for small changes. Track President and Ssquared owner John Sawyer was happy with the turnout but when I asked about the track he humbly said, "It's getting there." No matter what small tweaks are done in the following days, one thing remains clear - Oldsmar is not content with merely being the best rated track on the East Coast. They want to be Best in the Nation and it looks like nothing is going to stop them.

Team Atomic's Tampa Race Report

Team Atomic Race Report

January 6th, Tampa

Team Atomic had a large showing at Tampa on Friday, it had been quite awhile since many of us had been there. The weather was nice and the racing was great. Tampa did not use the transfer system and elected to use three motos and a main. In spite of this, Team Atomic had 22 riders present and took 15 podium spots!

In the 10/11 Girls, Katrina Connors stole the number #1 spot in the main despite not being on the Tampa track in over a year. She also won the side bet she had with her dad for taking the win and was taken out for ice cream the next day.

In 14/15 Girls, Madison Walter had some stiff competition racing against her this week, amongst the group of tuff competitors was last year’s NBL National Champion. Madison Rubbed elbows and bars throughout the motos and the main, ultimately taking #2 in the main.

In the Cruiser Class, Madison’s dad, Gordon Walter took first in all is moto’s. Gordon had a bobble in turn 3 in the main, but still took home the #2.

7 Intermediate, I will call him “Nature Boy” Tyler Harnage because it seems like he was born with a bmx bike attached to him. Tyler blew away the competition and took #1 in all moto’s and the main.

9 Novice and Tampa local, Dylan Brooks proved he knows every speck of dirt on the Tampa track by blowing out the competition and took #1 in all his motos and the main.

In the 9 Intermediate, Joe Bongiorno pushed his green machine into the #2 spot on spot on the podium.

In 10 Intermediate, Kade Moscatello and Wesley Harnage showed what the purple and gold team could do by taking 2nd and 3rd respectively from the locals.

In 10/11 Novice, Kara Borosch and Andrew Brooks raced 5 other novices and took 2 podium spots. Kara showed the boys they need work harder when racing her by taking the win with teammate Andrew right on her back tire for the #2.

11 Intermediate, Shawn Miller hit the track hard and took 3rd place from some very stiff and close competition.

In 11 Expert, Franky Trubia took the #3 by fighting it out with the locals and 2 factory riders.

14 Novice, turned out to be all Team Atomic race with Cris Koustis, Natalya Borosh, Alyssa Bongiorno having some friendly battles. Chris took the win with Natalya and Alyssa in tow for the 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In 14 Intermediate, Bradley Miller rubbed eblows and stole the 3rd place from the Tampa locals.

Great job to all the riders, you make the team and your parents proud. We all had a great time and look forward to the new year.

Fastest Lap Winner - Mario Lopez

Back in May of 2011 I had the opportunity to interview one of Florida's rising stars - Mario Lopez. This 14 year old Expert is steadily making his name known despite being in one of the toughest divisions in the sport. While other teenage boys are becoming distracted by the confusion of social life, Mario remains disciplined. You'll see him at the track practicing, you'll see him winning local races and no matter where he pops up, you'll always see his smile.

Why the constant smile? Because Mario is also one of the friendliest riders I've had the pleasure of meeting. On Sunday January 1st, 2012, Mario was in the right place with the fastest time as he won the Charlotte BMX Time Trials. This win gave us the opportunity to interview him again. We talked about what he has been up to, where he is going and what we should expect from him in the future.

Alex: First of all, Congratulations on winning the 2012 Charlotte BMX Time Trial. Let me ask you, were you surprised that you won?

Mario: Thanks again Alex. I was some what surprised that I won but I knew I could do it.

Alex: I interviewed you last year where we learned about your start in BMX so tell us what you have been up to since then?

Mario: I have been training hard and being healthy throughout that time. At Disney Cup I made it up to my Semis on Sunday, at Jacksonville I got fifth on Saturday and second on Sunday. I went to the National in Puerto Rico where I finished second on both days.

Alex: DS Racing is a very talent rich team, what do you think of the team and how did you get picked for it?

Mario: I think the team is a great team. I was picked up because I went to a summer camp that DS was holding and he (Dennison Smith) saw that I put a lot of interest into the sport.

Alex: I understand that you will racing outside of Florida this year, where will you be going?

Mario: I will probably be heading to Bolivia, California, and if I keep training really hard I probably may head to the worlds this year.

Alex: Now that USA BMX is the National Governing body for the sport, do you see more opportunities for yourself in the coming years?

Mario: It's going to be a little bit harder now that ABA and NBL are put together but I know if work hard and believe in myself I can make it anywhere.

Alex: What are your BMX goals for 2012?

Mario: My goals for 2012 are to be State #1 again and to work as hard as I can to go to the Worlds and make my main in the Grands!

Alex: Do you have anyone you want to thank?

Mario: I would like to thank my parents for everything, DS racing, and the Federation of Puerto Rico .

The Fastest Track in Florida

When a track calls itself the fastest in Florida that's a pretty bold statement. One might suggest they are overreaching a bit. However, it wasn't the track officials who said it, it was the riders. Riverview BMX was originally built on a downhill trajectory. Each straight is set a little higher than the following. It was already a fast track but it wasn't quite perfect. I'm happy to say, they have fixed that problem.

The recent rebuild lifted up a triple step at the end of the first straight, deepened the rhythm section and added a Monster step-up on the second straight. These changes had the effect of sending even slow riders soaring into the first corner then up to the top of 'Kong' the Monster step up which sends you flying down the second and third. If you have ever wanted to reach top speed on a BMX bike, Riverview is now designed to give you that opportunity.

Track Director Jeff Chevalier said he wanted Riverview to be a unique destination that might be especially appealing to Expert and Professional riders. The angles of the track and size of the hills along with a flattening of the lips on the doubles allows riders to reach maximum speed with an incredible flow. In other words, who needs a Pro-set when you got bold curves. The downside is that the fierce acceleration might make lesser skilled riders (Like myself) a little nervous come race time.

The upside of a speedy track is that it quickly turns new riders into good riders and that's never a bad thing. In addition to the upgrades on the clay, Riverview Officials were also very happy to tell me that the facility is now debt free and ready for the 2012 season. Their first act of their financial freedom was to hire me to build and manage their new website. I created it over the weekend along with this intro video for your viewing pleasure - enjoy!

We at the Bog Dogs Race Report are happy to announce that our first year as a BMX Racing News website was a success. We have you, our readers, to thank for it. You have made a blogging hobby into a thriving business.

During 2011 we visited 11 of Florida's 18 tracks. We wrote over 200 stories (Including 26 Interviews) and took 10,000 photos. Our website picked up over 82,000 hits (Plus an additional 115,000 hits on Youtube) with recent numbers reaching 10,000 hits per month.

Cape Coral Riders Appear on Fox News

Several riders braved the cold weather (44 degrees is cold for Florida) and arrived at the Cape Coral BMX track at 3:45 in the morning in order to be part of a news piece about our sport for FOX News.

Reporter Pooja Lodhia interviewed a number of riders and their families in several segments. She learned about the history of the track, how several riders got started in the sport and about how BMXers are all one big happy family.

Morphine Industries End of Year Wrap

Ok, First things first. Everybody raise their hand that did not get sicker than a dog after the Grands. Raise them high. Not a hand to be seen.

The anticipation of the Grands and what affect the consolidation of the sanction might have definitely throw a new twist on the event. It proved to be a positive twist by making this race the biggest on record with 603 motos.

The Morphine Crew saddled up from all corners – Ft Lauderdale, Atlanta, Rockford, Dayton, Pittsburgh and Charlotte and headed to the land of BMX greatness. After many hours of beef jerky, energy drinks, coffee, pork rinds and many unexpected mouthfuls of dark brown rubber, we all arrived in Tulsa. Thank God…

When the dust cleared , bikes packed and bellies where full of pressed turkey loaf and dehydrated mash potatoes, the ABA results for the year were as follows:
